Karen Sanders via NaturalHealth365 – By now, most people know we should treat antibiotics with caution. In addition to harming your gut – which relies on friendly bacteria to process food, regulate the immune system, and much more – there is also the danger of creating antibiotic-resistant superbugs that could have devastating consequences for the health of the human race. Unfortunately, treating newborns with antibiotics – often as early as the first seven days after birth – is de rigeur in the world of Western medical science. But new studies have linked this practice with lasting decreases in health and digestive function for babies. When Is it Appropriate to Treat Newborns With Antibiotics? The newborn constitution is a delicate one. It is not necessarily an overreaction to treat suspected infections in small babies, as they can become life-threatening in a relatively short period and with little warning. Neither should we assume that any antibiotic application is acceptable simply because it reduces the chances of a pathology for which doctors don’t have proof. Today – explains the study – broad-spectrum antibiotics are prescribed to between 4 and 10 percent of all newborns for suspected infections. The “broad-spectrum” is key here. That means a battery of the most common antibiotics to be sure to knock it out. Too often, however, antibiotics are prescribed in cases they are not needed. And their overuse comes at a high cost. The study included 147 infants with suspected sepsis and 80 with no suspected infections. The babies with suspected infections were prescribed one of three standard courses of antibiotics. Afterward, researchers collected a rectal or fecal sample from each baby at 1, 4, and 12 months. Here is what the study found. Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics Used in Newborns May Cause Unintended Harm The study found several adverse outcomes for babies treated with antibiotics at such an early age. Antibiotics increase the baby’s antimicrobial resistance, meaning that if they were to need antibiotics later for a life-threatening condition, those antibiotics might not work as well. Newborns who received antibiotics demonstrated lower levels of the good bacteria (in this case, Bifidobacterium species) that make up the microbiome. Babies treated with antibiotics in the first week of life were less able to digest breastmilk from their mothers, which reduces the natural microbial protection it offers. This is alarming, considering how important our microbiomes are to us throughout our lives. In fact, the colony of bacteria that makes up our microbiome contains 100 trillion microbes with 200 times as many genes as we have ourselves. Together, the microbiome can weigh up to 5 pounds, more than the brain, the heart, the liver, or a pair of lungs. Protect the Microbiome by Taking a More Cautious Approach This isn’t to say we should abandon antibiotics for newborns. Instead, we need to take a more careful approach than the standard ready-aim-fire used in hospitals today. Experts quoted in the study affirm the wisdom of using fewer and better medicines. The least detrimental treatment protocol from the study was a combination of penicillin and gentamicin and is therefore preferable for future prescription. As adults, we should continue to protect our microbiomes by avoiding antibiotics wherever possible and adopting natural antimicrobial measures. this way, we will maintain healthy bodies and ensure that, where truly needed, antibiotics continue to have lifesaving effects well in the future.

Dr. Don Colbert – If you’re looking to support your immune system and stick to a low-carb diet, you’re in luck. There are many low-carb Keto Zone® foods that support your immune system. In fact, while refined starches and sugar actually inhibit immune function, many healthy low-carbohydrate fats, proteins, and vegetables support it. Here is our Top 15 List! 15 Simple Superfoods That Support Your Immune System 1. Anti-Inflammatory Spices i.e. Ginger and Turmeric Looking for a strong anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting punch? Ginger and Turmeric are potent spices with anti-inflammatory components. In fact, the main compound in turmeric, curcumin, can normalize inflammation, joint pain, and provide a plethora of health benefits. What’s more, ginger does many of the same things. It promotes whole-body health, supports the immune system, reducing inflammatory and pain responses with its strong antioxidants. Why is reducing inflammatory responses important in supporting your immune system? Inflammation directly affects the immune system by changing the course of hormones and impacting the immune response (1). 2. Fish Oils and Omega-3 Sources Like anti-inflammatory spices, omega-3 fats from fish and seafood are foods that support your immune system. In fact, they are some of the most potent compounds to reduce inflammatory hormone production. It’s vital to have a good ratio of dietary omega-3 fats compared to omega-6 fats. Both are needed for human health, but modern diets are far too high in omega-6 foods (mostly due to processed foods), and too low in omega-3s from fish and seafood, seeds, nuts, and more. Great choices for omega3 fatsare salmon, halibut, and tuna. 3. MCT Oil Powder While it works differently than omega3 fats, the medium-chain triglycerides in MCT Oil Powder also reduce inflammatory reactions. In fact, studies have shown that MCT oil directly reduces the response of C-reactive protein (a marker for inflammation) (2). 4. High Antioxidants Fruits and Vegetables Antioxidants are also vital compounds in foods that support your immune system. Antioxidants fight free radicals that damage all cells and systems, including the immune system, reduce inflammation, and support cellular detoxification. For example, two high-antioxidant superfoods found in Divine Health Fermented Green Supremefood® and Organic Red Supremefood® that support the immune system in this way are beets, spirulina, and wheatgrass (3, 4, 5, 6). Great choices include berries, asparagus, greens, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and more. 5. Oleocanthal Oleocanthal is a special compound isolated from high-quality Greek olive oils. While it’s not easy to find it in most commercial olive oils, it can be consumed in Dr. Colbert’s Oleocanthal (Powerful Antioxidant Concentrated from High-Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil). In fact, it contains disease-fighting antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and compounds that support heart health. Oleocanthal is so strong it reduces inflammation in similar strength to some medications, like ibuprofen (4). Additionally, it provides both antibacterial and antiviral action (5). Oleocanthal is a compound that absolutely supports your immune system. 6. Avocados Avocados are another anti-inflammatory food. It has fats called phytosterols. They are known to combat the inflammation associated with arthritis. Avocados also contain polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFAs), which are also potent anti-inflammatories. Lastly, avocado’s oleic acid supports digestive tract health to directly boost the immune system. 7. Proteins from Eggs, Meats and More While many people consume more protein than they need, it is still a vital macronutrient for the immune system. In fact, when people suffer from protein malnutrition, they are typically unable to fight diseases from bacteria or viruses. The immune system, hormones, cellular growth and repair, and other systems all rely on adequate protein. 8. Collagen and Bone Broth If you’ve been told to eat chicken noodle soup when you’re sick, it’s mostly for the bone broth. The collagen in bone broth and Keto Zone Collagen Powder support the immune system by: Providing amino acids and proteins Fortifying the cells in the digestive tract Reducing inflammation 9. Natural and Supplemental Probiotics One very important step to support your immune system is to support your gut. The cells in the digestive tract and the healthy bacteria that live there are vital to the immune system and nourishment of the whole body. There are many ways to get probiotics, or healthy bacteria, in low-carbs foods. These include probiotics found in Keto Zone Collagen Powder, Organic Green and Red Supremefood®, Keto Zone Living Milled Chia with Probiotics, plain yogurt, kimchi, kombucha and more. By adding healthy bacteria to your diet, you can support your immune system (8). 10. Garlic and Onions Garlic is a wonderful food to support your immune system. Garlic’s compounds fight viruses and bacterias while supporting cellular detox. Studies show that garlic may be effective in supporting natural immune functions against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria (9) and strong viruses. Additionally, onions support your immune system with antioxidants, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer compounds. 11. Lemons and Lemon Juice Vitamin C is one of our most-studied and well-known antioxidants. Lemons contain vitamin C plus antibacterial components effective throughout the mouth and intestines. 12. Black Pepper, Cinnamon, and Cloves Setting in your spice cupboard are incredibly strong foods that support your immune system (in addition to turmeric and ginger). These include: Black peppercorns support your immune system with potent antioxidants like piperine and anti-inflammatory compounds (10. Cinnamon is not only known for being anti-inflammatory, but it’s cinnamaldehyde can also fight infections directly. It inhibits Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, and Helicobacter pylori. What’s more, it can fight tooth decay and supports the immune response to infection. Cloves, like cinnamon, are a spice that supports immune health, fights bacteria, and fights free radicals. 13. Cauliflower and Broccoli Cauliflower and broccoli are amazing vegetables. In addition to antioxidants that fight oxidative stress, their nutrients specifically support cellular detoxification to keep cells healthy and thriving. This includes both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of cellular detoxification. 14. Apple Cider Vinegar Organic apple cider vinegar is an ingredient in many folk medicine cures. It is known to fight both bacterial and viral infections, yeasts, and more. Importantly, you should never drink it straight. Always dilute to just 1-2 tablespoons per 8 ounces liquid to protect your esophagus. 15. Water, Green Tea, and Black Tea Green and black tea are packed full of antioxidants that fight free radicals, fight bacteria, and support your immune system. In fact, their specific nutrients fight microbes in the mouth. And water? Not only is it necessary for life, but it’s also necessary for the immune system. Especially during times of viral outbreak, it’s important to stay hydrated and keep your mouths and airways moist. Bonus: Introducing DR. COLBERT’S IMMUNE SUPPORT!

News Staff via CBN News – The coronavirus pandemic has created a desire among many of us to kill all germs everywhere. However, leading scientists say that’s going too far and that over-sanitizing our environment can lead to a number of health problems. CBN Medical Reporter Lorie Johnson interviewed Dr. Jack Gilbert, author of the book “Dirt is Good.” Dr. Gilbert said the world around us is filled with all kinds of helpful microbes that actually strengthen our immune system. “The wonderful thing about microbes is they’ve been here for a long period of time and they’ve adapted to every environment on earth,” he explained. “In the last 100 years since we’ve moved in moved indoors and live in our sealed homes, the microbes that have inhabited our bodies have taken up residence in our homes. The bacteria that live on our skin, in our mouth, and in your gut find their way into the homes we live in. They play an active role in our health.” And there can be serious, harmful health consequences if we mismanage microbes, particularly for children. “The environment in which a child grows up shapes their immune system especially in the first six weeks to six months of life. When a child is putting things in their mouth, those exposures and experiences shapes how their immune system develops and that can shape how our brains develop. For children with autism or allergic diseases, those early life exposures can be fundamental in helping them live a healthy life.” Dr. Gilbert pointed out that growing up around animals and in an environment that isn’t totally sterile can help a child’s immune system. “When we look at asthma which is a major disease, it affects approximately nine to 10 percent of the U.S. population,” Gilbert said. “It’s huge, right? Children that grow up living with a dog, physically interacting with a dog can have a 13 percent reduction in the likelihood of developing asthma overall. Children that grow up on a farm and interact with farm animals have a 50 percent reduction in the likelihood of developing asthma.” “We can use our information about the exposures those children get to try and understand how to train children’s immune systems that grow up in inner cities and urban environments where their immune systems are not being trained appropriately as you might expect.” Additionally, he explained that too much disinfecting with antibacterial products can be harmful to a child’s body. “Early life-straining of the immune system, sensing the bacteria in dirt or the microbes in the hair of a dog play an active role in helping the child’s immune system to learn how to cope with the environment in which it finds itself,” he said. “That will stop allergic diseases such as asthma, food allergy, maybe even help the development of the brain and endocrine system to allow the body to live a healthy and productive life without chronic diseases.” Dr. Gilbert even gave advice on how to get enough good germs while still protecting against the coronavirus. “There’s a simple solution to allow our children to survive the pandemic without chronic consequences. Allow them to physically interact with a dog or a pet on a regular basis. Allow the child to play with dirt and plants. Allow the child outside. Those simple solutions will expose your child to the right kind of microbial environments.” Finally, Dr. Gilbert encouraged everyone to continue washing their hands with warm water and soap, because viruses are still something to be avoided.

Lori Clarkson via NaturalHealth365 – A cold shower is often a first-world annoyance in western societies. Now, many are voluntarily turning their taps as cold as they can in the name of “wellness.” There are a few crazy fads out there, many with no-scientific backing, but cold water immersion isn’t one of them. Cold showers are proven to have a wealth of evidence-backed benefits. The Leading Research That Put Cold Showers on the Map in the Natural Health Community Nutrition, movement, and quality sleep are the pillars of health. How does the discomfort of an ice-cold shower fit into that? Cold water immersion has gained popularity because of the incredible research undertaken on “The Iceman.” Wim Hof (well-known as “The Iceman”) is the king of ice-baths, breathing techniques, climbing up mountains shirtless, and swimming under ice-sheets in the arctic. Now, he teaches other people how to build resiliency in both cold water and life circumstances. He claims that his method will increase immunity, reduce stress, increase your willpower, and lose weight. But how much of this is embedded in science? No doubt, some of the stuff he has done appears “crazy.” Scott Carney, an investigative journalist who debunks “gurus” similar Hof, attended one of Wim’s retreats in Poland. He turned from cynical reporter to raving fan. In fact, he ended up climbing Kilimanjaro with Hof, wearing just a bathing suit, within two days. A feat that would usually kill you from hypoxia. The Benefits of Cold Water Immersion Backed by Science The science behind Hof is quite remarkable. He wanted to prove to the world that you can control your autonomic nervous system through breath and cold water immersion. The researchers injected Hof with endotoxin, dead bacterias designed to invoke a flu-like immune response. Medical experts were expecting Hof to experience fever, chills, and headaches. He experienced none of these flu-like symptoms. Could he be superhuman, or can anyone control their immune system? Conventional methods are not working. So, researchers are now looking at natural health methods for chronic diseases. One of the natural health methods being studied is cold-water immersion. In a clinical trial where participants had 2 to 3 cold showers for 5 minutes each session, there was an increase in endorphin levels. In America, depression affects at least 10% of the population (reported, but there are likely many more). It’s clear that antidepressants aren’t working for everyone, we need to make it clear to more people that these natural remedies will help. Are you feeling sluggish in the morning? It’s no surprise that a cold shower will wake you up quickly. Your stress hormone, cortisol, should start kicking in as the sun rises and wake you up. If you’re a slow-starter, get your hormones working for you faster. A cold shower will increase your alertness, blood pressure, and respiratory rate. It’ll also increase your immunity. In a study of over 3,000 people, cold showers of 30-90 seconds resulted in a 29% reduction in sick days. Athletes have been utilizing the benefits of cold exposure for years. Ice baths reduce pain and recovery time for active people. Wim Hof’s results are inspirational, but you don’t need to take it to the extreme to gain the benefits that the cold will provide. Just five minutes in a cold shower a few times per week will reduce depression, increase focus, and increase your immunity. And it doesn’t take any more time in your busy schedule to get started. How to Get Started for Those Who Like it Hot Most of us aren’t committed to spending hours in the snow barefoot. It can be dangerous and downright crazy for beginners. Luckily most of the research undertaken proves that all you need is a few five minute cold showers per week to reap these benefits. Five minutes is a long time in the cold shower if you’re new to this. Here’s the best way to get started for beginners. Ease into it. Jumping straight into a cold shower is a shock to your system. Start on a lukewarm temperature, then slowly get colder. Don’t put your head under the water for too long. If you’ve sipped on your green smoothie too quickly, you will have experienced brain freeze. Cold showers can be a shock to your brain also. In fact, losing consciousness in the shower can have fatal consequences. Duck your head under the water occasionally at a rate that is achievable for you. And, do not forget to breathe. Most people hold their breath when engaging in a challenging activity. Conscious breathing will give you more oxygen, which your cells need to function. That’s why your personal trainer instructs you to exhale on the concentric phase of your exercises. That same is true for your cold shower. When you breathe into it, you’ll energize your body, and the cold will become easier to manage. The surprising benefits of cold showers are undeniable. We are almost always in our “comfort zones,” which is not always contributing to a healthier and happier community. Enjoy the undeniable benefits of cold water immersion by stepping into the short-term discomfort of a cold shower today.

Michael Greger M.D. FACLM via Nutrition Facts – Researchers have documented correlations between higher vitamin D levels and all sorts of positive outcomes like decreases in cardiovascular disease, weight gain, infectious diseases, and declining cognitive function… In 1822, a Polish physician was the first to publish that sunlight could cure the vitamin D deficiency disease rickets. His work was ignored by mainstream medicine for a century, not coming into widespread use until the 20th century, when wire cages were actually affixed to tenement buildings so babies could benefit from the sun. In my video Will You Live Longer If You Take Vitamin D Supplements?, I explore whether we’re in a similar situation now, where the medical profession has just not caught up with the science. Researchers have documented correlations between higher vitamin D levels and all sorts of positive outcomes like decreases in cardiovascular disease, weight gain, infectious diseases, and declining cognitive function, and even tested whether vitamin D supplementation might reduce the adverse effects of earthquakes. It seems to help with everything else, so why not? It’s actually not as silly as it sounds because traumatic events like natural disasters can have a significant psychological impact that might be affected by vitamin D status. But when researchers put supplements to the test, the purported links often didn’t pan out. This lack of effect may exist in part because low vitamin D levels may just be a marker for things like aging, obesity, smoking, and inactivity. Or, maybe low vitamin D didn’t lead to disease, but disease led to low vitamin D, because inflammation can drop D levels within the body. So, just because low D levels and disease seem to be correlated, it doesn’t mean that vitamin D deficiency is the cause. While the majority of observational studies may show a link, where you simply measure vitamin D levels and disease rates, in only a handful of conditions have interventional studies—where you give people D supplements or placebos then see what happens—proven vitamin D to be effective. One of the conditions for which vitamin D supplements appear to genuinely work, however, is helping to prevent premature death. Fifty-six randomized clinical trials involving nearly 100,000 people (mostly women) between the ages of 18 and 107 were randomized to four years of vitamin D supplements or sugar pills. Putting all the studies together showed those given vitamin D supplements lived longer and specifically had a lower risk of dying from cancer. This effect appeared limited to vitamin D3, though, which is the type derived from plants and animals, not vitamin D2, which is the type derived from yeast and mushrooms. How large an effect was it? It would take 150 people taking vitamin D supplements for five years to save one life. If we were talking about a drug, we’d need to weigh that against the cost and side effects of dosing so many people. But when we’re talking about something as safe and cheap as vitamin D supplements, it seems like a bargain to me. A similar analysis pegged the benefit at 11 percent in terms of reduction of total mortality, which is pretty substantial, potentially offering a life extension benefit on par with exercise. Though, no, it does not seem to reduce the adverse impacts of earthquakes. The only concern is that it may give people license to order an extra doughnut or something. We still have to eat healthfully because any longevity benefit from vitamin D would just be a small adjunct to a healthy lifestyle. But, for those of us who want all the help we can get, the question then becomes how much should we take? I address that in my videos How Much Vitamin D Should You Take? and The Optimal Dose of Vitamin D Based on Natural Levels. This article has been modified. To read the original article click here.

Al Sears, MD, CNS – This new field of medicine is exciting and echoes what I’ve been telling my patients for years: keep your immune system strong. In the not-so-distant future, I see a world where all the chronic diseases that plague us today will be cured before they’ve even begun. That may sound like science fiction, but it’s not. In fact, it’s already happening with a revolutionary stem-cell treatment developed by oncologist and stem-cell pioneer Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj right here in South Florida. And that’s why I made Dr. Maharaj one of the key speakers at my Palm Beach Anti-Aging Summit at the historic Palm Beach icon Mara-a-Lago. You’ve probably heard about stem cells on the news and wondered if they can help you or a loved one with a chronic or autoimmune disease. The answer is YES. The problem is that most doctors won’t talk about stem cells. That’s because the latest breakthrough treatments – which have only recently become available to people who want to reverse or protect themselves from chronic disease – are considered “experimental.” Stem cells are the master cells from which all other human cells are made. They’re also the ultimate natural cure, because they let the body do what it does best: heal itself. Many stem cells have the power to morph into any kind of cell in your body, heart, brain, nerve, liver cells, you name it. That’s why scientists say that stem cells will be used someday to regenerate the damaged tissue of any organ. But stem cells in your bone marrow have a different purpose – they are destined to become vital components of your immune system. And that’s the key to this breakthrough treatment that has already reversed various cancers, diabetes, and a number of autoimmune disorders. It’s based on the answer to a simple but important question: Why do some people get chronic diseases and others don’t? Because when chronic disease strikes, it means your immune system has broken down. A study published by the American Society of Hematology found thriving immune systems in centenarians and healthy seniors, but those who were younger and had chronic diseases all had weakened immune systems. Specifically, those with chronic diseases had fewer special killer cells called Natural Killer (NK) cells, a type of white blood cell that targets cancer and infected cells. And only adult stem cells in your bone marrow can make NK cells. At the first sign of trouble, your NK cells flood into your blood stream to infiltrate tumors and infections, and attack them. It’s all about bulking up your immune system. Take cancer, for example. Cancer isn’t the mysterious illness your doctor and the rest of the medical establishment want you to believe. Like other chronic diseases, cancer is your body’s natural reaction to the inflammation caused by the toxic, modern environment around you. That’s why cancer cells are constantly forming inside you; we live in a toxic world. But if your immune system is strong, it will swat those cancer cells like flies, along with every other disease going. The problem is that inflammation destroys your immune system. In fact, your immune system has been under attack from inflammation-causing irritants for years and you’ve been unaware of it, because it’s been happening at the cellular level. These silent irritants are slowly killing you: • Environmental toxins and pollutants; • Poor diet; • Excess weight; • Cigarette smoke. But there is one irritant that is worse than all of the above… I’m talking about stress. Chronic stress has a devastating effect on your immune system, and has been linked to the inflammation that causes heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer. Here’s why: Your immune system responds to chronic stress with one, overriding reaction – and that’s inflammation. But here’s good news: The solution to repairing your broken immune system is found in the stem cells of your own bone marrow – no matter what your age or your state of health. This breakthrough therapy works by tapping the stem cells you already have in your own body, then freezing and storing them so you can use them against diseases you may get in the future. Storing your stem cells is perhaps also the ultimate in “bio-insurance.” But even if you already have a chronic disease, your immune system stem cells can still be “activated” with a special protein to produce more NK cells. This new field of medicine is exciting and echoes what I’ve been telling my patients for years: keep your immune system strong. It’s your best ally against disease – even cancer. So here are my top four immune-system boosters you can start with at home right away: 1. Watch your diet. Our modern diet has replaced nutritious, healthy protein and fats with “empty” calories like grains and starchy carbohydrates. Switch to a diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins to boost your immune system and your ability to fight off infections. You should also avoid high fructose corn syrup, which causes inflammation. 2. Get plenty of sleep. Your stem cells and immune system need sleep. This is when your body’s maintenance work takes place. When you’re deprived of sleep, your immune system suffers and your body becomes vulnerable. 3. Cut your stress. Stress creates a hormone called cortisol. A little cortisol can help you. But a steady stream of it is toxic to your immune system. You should clear the stress from your mind and your body for at least 10 minutes every day. Mediation or yoga can be great stress busters. And so is exercise. 4. Take cat’s claw. There are a number of immune-system boosting herbs you can take, and one of my favorites is cat’s claw. This herb stimulates T-cells to boost the immune system and fight infection. You can find it in health food stores. Look for a supplement made from the inner bark of the plant and take 500 mg. per day. To your good health, Al Sears, MD, CNS To read the original article click here.
