Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – Chai or chai tea is a popular drink in India, where this delicious hot beverage is often made by boiling tea leaves with milk and adding sugar and spices. My chai tea recipe is a bit of a twist because instead of whole cow’s milk, I use coconut milk. In addition, instead of refined white sugar, I use honey or maple syrup, and instead of including tea, I keep this chai caffeine-free. (Yet it’s ready for the addition of tea if you’d like. Traditionally, chai includes black tea.) This chai tea recipe is so tasty. Rather than being filled with toxic chemicals and artificial sweeteners and flavors, this drink is loaded with chai tea benefits thanks to its antioxidants, real spices and zero refined sugars. It’s easy to make and extremely delicious. So, go on, give this hot, creamy, fragrant beverage a try. What Is Chai? Chai tea, chai latte, chai tea latte — no matter what you call it, chai is a popular beverage these days. Tea lattes are a variation on caffè lattes. Like caffè lattes, they are typically made with steamed milk, but instead of including coffee or espresso, a tea latte is made with tea. However, this chai tea latte recipe is caffeine-free so you don’t have to worry at all about an unpleasant caffeine overdose. So what is chai? “Chai” is the Hindi word for “tea,” which was derived from “cha.” Cha is the Chinese word for “tea.” So what is chai tea? It’s essentially “tea tea” that is made customarily in India, where it’s commonly called masala chai. The spices that go into chai can vary from region to region or even household to household, just like garam masala. Some of the spices most commonly included in a chai include cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and black peppercorn. So wait, does chai tea have caffeine, and how much caffeine does chai tea have? Chai tea only has caffeine if a caffeine source is included in its making. Typically, it does include caffeinated black tea, but it doesn’t have to. As I said, this chai recipe is completely free of caffeine, which makes it a great choice for kids as well as adults! The benefits of chai tea comes from its many health-boosting ingredients. For example, all of the spices are loaded with antioxidants, which are known to play an important role in the prevention of so many chronic diseases. How to Make This Chai Tea Recipe How to make chai tea is really quick and simple. Basically, all you have to do is heat up the milk and then combine all of the ingredients in a blender. The same goes for chai lattes that include black tea. Simply steep the tea and add to the blender. The first step in this recipe is to put the coconut milk into a small pot and warm it up over medium heat. Add the warmed coconut milk to a high-powered blender. Add the honey or maple syrup. Add the date and spices to the blender. Blend on high until well-combined. Pour and enjoy. Your chai is complete! Frothy Chai Tea Latte Recipe Chai tea is a popular drink in India and is often made by boiling tea leaves with milk and adding sugar and spices. Try my chai tea recipe! INGREDIENTS 2 cups coconut milk 1 date, pitted ½–1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup ½ teaspoon cinnamon ⅛ teaspoon ginger ⅛ teaspoon cardamom ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves INSTRUCTIONS In a small pot, over medium heat, warm the coconut milk. Add the warmed coconut milk to a high-powered blender. Add the remaining ingredients to the blender and blend on high until well-combined. Pour and enjoy! To read the original article click here.

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – Crispy treats: they sound so cute and friendly and yummy. It’s unfortunate that they’re essentially made of rice, sugar, butter and marshmallows — lots of it. But what if I told you there was a way to enjoy the dessert guilt-free? Goodbye, rice krispies, hello Quinoa Crispy Treats! This healthified version replaces the rice with protein-rich quinoa and sweetens things up the natural way thanks to healing raw honey. And instead of using gobs of butter, the quinoa crispy bars are held together with almond and sunflower seed butters. Yum! Not only is this quinoa bar tasty, it’s also the perfect energy bar. It delivers 235 calories per serving, with 24 grams of healthy carbs, 14 grams of healthy fats and 6 grams of protein. Try this new take on an old treat tonight. How to Make Quinoa Crispy Bars Start by lining an 8×8 baking dish with parchment paper. In a small pot over very low heat (honey should never be heated up much at all), melt add the coconut oil, honey, almond butter and sunflower seed butter. Remove the pot from heat once the mixture has melted and sprinkle with the sea salt and cinnamon. Then pour it all into the waiting baking dish. Stir the puffed quinoa through the almond butter mixture, making sure all the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated. With a spatula, even out the quinoa crispy mix so it’s all level. Then place the baking pan in the freezer, letting the crispy bar set for 20 minutes or so. When you’re ready to serve, remove the quinoa crispy bars from the freezer and cut immediately. Serve while still frozen. These are healthy quinoa bars are delicious and so easy to make. Kids love to help make them — and eat them, of course!

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – With autumn in full swing, you might have noticed fruit butters appearing at your local farmers market. Have you tried them before? They are a delightful spread to dip fruits and veggies in or slather onto toast. And one of my favorite types of fruit butters — especially this time of year — is slow cooker apple butter made from nutrition-rich apples. Apple Butter vs. Apple Jam Now, you might confuse apple butter with jam, but they aren’t the same. See, jams are made from crushed or chopped fruit that are combined with sugar, pectin to thicken the mix and sometimes lemon juice. It’s all puréed together to eliminate any chunks of fruit. Fruit butters combine the entire fruit, including the peel, with spices and sugar. Because there is no pectin, the fruit takes longer to cook down. But the added amount of time actually works to your benefit; it’s what puts the “butter” in “apple butter,” as it becomes super spreadable. Yum! Why Use A Slow Cooker? That’s why the slow cooker comes in handy for this Crockpot Apple Butter recipe. Instead of having to remain vigilant over a pot on the stove, you can add all the ingredients into the slow cooker and go. And trust me, the smell that will be coming from your slow cooker is better than any scented candle you could burn! Key Ingredients So what makes a great homemade apple butter? And what are the best apples for a crockpot apple butter? Like most recipes with few ingredients, the quality of apple is important here. When possible, opt for local, organic varieties. Often a mix a few different kinds provides the best flavor. Softer varieties of apples such as Fuji, Golden Delicious, Jonathan or Jonagold can work well because they cook down faster. One of the underrated parts of apple butter is the fact that it uses cinnamon and apple cider vinegar, two ingredients that come with a ton of benefits. The health benefits of cinnamon are impressive. The spice is packed with antioxidants, which help reduce free radical damage and can slow down aging. Cinnamon also contains powerful anti-inflammatory effects, protects heart health and fights infections and viruses. As little as 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon can really make a difference in your body. Apple cider vinegar is another natural ingredient that’s beneficial to our bodies. When ingested, apple cider vinegar detoxes your body by balancing pH levels, stimulating the cardiovascular system, bowel mobility and lymphatic drainage. It’s also an effective treatment for acid reflux and heartburn while killing off excess yeast. That means this apple butter isn’t just tasty, it’s great for your body, too. How to Make Apple Butter It’s time to get this slow cooker apple butter going! Start by adding all the ingredients into the slow cooker and let the apple butter recipe cook for the next six hours. Stir every two hours. Once the slow cooker apple butter is ready, use an immersion blender to blend the apples. No immersion blender? Then blend in batches in a high-powered blender. Then do a taste test. Add a little maple sugar to sweeten to your liking and stir in. (I prefer mine without any added maple sugar). Then store the apple butter recipe in a mason jar. This slow cooker apple butter will keep for up to three months in the refrigerator, but I doubt it will last that long! Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe With autumn in full swing, you might have noticed fruit butters appearing at your local farmers market. Have you tried making one yourself? It’s surprisingly easy and this apple butter recipe will delight. INGREDIENTS 10 apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1 cup organic apple juice ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon cinnamon ½ tablespoon ground clove 2–3 cinnamon sticks maple sugar, optional INSTRUCTIONS Place all ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on medium heat for 6 hours. Stir every couple of hours. Turn off the slow cooker and using an immersion blender, blend the apple mixture until smooth. If you don’t have an immersion blender, blend in two batches in a high-powered blender. Optionally sweeten with maple sugar, to taste. Store in a mason jar in the fridge for up to 3 months.

Michelle Marks via NaturalHealth365 – Did you know that there are organic spices for diabetics that can help manage your blood sugar better? It is easy to add to any recipe and gives plenty of nutrients and specific health benefits. Many studies suggest that merely half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day can significantly reduce excess blood sugar levels. But before you run to the health food store to buy cinnamon, don’t forget to add fenugreek, coriander, and clove seeds. These spices give you that extra kick of flavor while, at the same time, helping to stabilize your energy level. Multiple Studies Confirm Fenugreek’s Ability to Regulate Blood Sugar Levels Fenugreek seeds contain many natural compounds, but research has identified that the phytonutrient galactomannan and amino acid 4 – hydroxyisoleucine are responsible for its glucose-lowering effect. Many lab studies have confirmed the beneficial effects of fenugreek in lowering blood sugar in type-2 diabetics. In a study on human subjects with mild type-2 diabetes, consumption of fenugreek extract for two months decreased the blood sugar levels and was less insulin resistant than the placebo group. In another study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 50 grams of fenugreek seed powder consumed twice daily decreased the fasting blood sugar level, improved glucose tolerance, and reduced the urinary glucose output by 54% in type-1 diabetics. In addition to this – it also decreased the total cholesterol, signs indicating its usefulness in managing diabetes and treating its complications. There is no recommended amount of fenugreek, however, clinical studies have used 5 grams of seeds or a gram of the powder per day. Spices for Diabetics Can Improve Insulin Sensitivity and Digestion Although coriander and cilantro belong to the same family, coriander leaves and seeds offer more significant benefits than cilantro. Coriander seeds contain two volatile oils – linalool and geranyl acetate – potent antioxidants that work at a cellular level. Lab studies have shown that coriander seed extracts decreased plasma glucose, improved insulin sensitivity, and improved serum lipid levels in animal models. Another study showed that 200 mg/kg of coriander seed extracts significantly increased the activity of insulin-secreting beta cells compared to the diabetic control animals. In a human study reported in Digestive Diseases and Sciences, researchers observed that coriander (seed) powder decreased the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, a chronic digestive complaint. Study participants reported a greater absence of bloating, pain, and constipation compared to the placebo group. Lower Blood Glucose and Cholesterol Levels with Cloves Cloves are rich in antioxidants anthocyanins and quercetin plus high in an active component called eugenol and is also an excellent source of manganese, a good source of omega-3 fats, vitamins C, K, fiber and minerals calcium, magnesium. In addition, this spice is a natural antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic. In one study, 30 type-2 diabetics were given capsules containing 0, 1, 2, or 3 grams of cloves each day – for a month – to observe the serum glucose levels. Study authors found that serum glucose dropped from 225 to 150 mg/dl, significantly dropping triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL levels. Therefore, researchers suggested that consuming 1 to 3 grams of cloves per day is beneficial for people with type-2 diabetes to better manage their glucose and total cholesterol levels. It is always best not to focus on one spice alone; adding a variety of spices to season your food doubles its medicinal value. Naturally, for best results, always work with an experienced healthcare provider or health coach about the best nutritional advice for you – especially if you have diabetes.

Christine Ruggeri, CHHC via Dr. Axe – Honey and cinnamon have been used since ancient times to support human health and wellness. Honey has a rich history dating back to ancient Greek, Roman, Vedic and Egyptian texts, while cinnamon has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic folk medicine for over 2,000 years. We know that, individually, both cinnamon and honey possess powerful therapeutic properties. What about when you use them together? If one is good by itself, does that mean that the two combined can be even more beneficial? Here’s what you need to know about the combination of honey and cinnamon. Benefits of Cinnamon 1. Rich in Antioxidants A major benefit of cinnamon is its antioxidant content. This helps reduce free radical damage and slow the aging process. Researchers have identified at least 41 different compounds in cinnamon with health-promoting capabilities. 2. Has Antimicrobial Properties Because cinnamon has antimicrobial properties, it can be used to optimize oral hygiene, fight infections and support skin health. Research suggests that it helps improve bad breath and tooth decay, ease respiratory issues like the common cold and sore throat, and soothe skin irritation, redness and swelling. 3. Relieves Inflammation The flavonoids in cinnamon have been proven to help alleviate inflammation, reduce swelling, ease muscle soreness and lessen the severity of allergic reactions. 4. Protects Heart Health Research shows that cinnamon may reduce several of the most common risk factors for heart disease, including high cholesterol levels, high triglyceride levels and high blood pressure. It may be a helpful blood coagulant that helps the body form blood clots and promotes circulation. 5. Stabilizes Blood Sugar Studies indicate that cinnamon has anti-diabetic effects and can lower blood sugar levels and improve sensitivity to the hormone insulin. This is what makes it one of the best foods for diabetics. 6. Supports Brain Function Antioxidants in cinnamon have been found to help defend against the development of neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Benefits of Honey 1. Helps Fight Allergies The bee pollen in honey helps boost immunity and can improve allergy symptoms with a concept called immunotherapy. Studies indicate that consuming local pollen reduces a person’s sensitivity over time, thereby reducing allergy symptoms. 2. Provides Antioxidants A daily dose of honey provides health-promoting antioxidants that help block free radicals in the body and prevent a number of diseases. Research shows that consuming honey increases levels of disease-fighting polyphenols in the blood and other antioxidants that support enzyme activity. 3. Supports Sleep Honey helps promote restorative sleep. It helps restock the liver’s glycogen supply and prevents the brain from searching for fuel, which can keep you up at night. Eating honey also promotes the release of melatonin in the brain by stimulating the release tryptophan. 4. Relieves Cough Research suggests that a single dose of honey can reduce mucus secretion and coughs. One study found that honey was just as effective as diphenhydramine and dextromethorphan, two ingredients that are commonly used in over-the-counter cough medicines. 5. Aids Wound Healing Studies show that honey is an antibacterial agent that aids wound healing and creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria. It can be used for the treatment of wounds, burns and skin ulcers. How Honey and Cinnamon Work Together Honey and cinnamon both possess powerful antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This is why they’ve been used in ancient medicine to relieve a slew of health conditions. The reasons these two superfoods create such a powerful effect on the body vary but generally center on their ability to control inflammation, combat free radicals and boost immune function. When used together, cinnamon powder and honey offer a range health benefits, improving cholesterol and immune system health, while aiding weight loss and fighting heart disease. The compounds found in both foods come together to have the best effects, making them a perfect addition to tea, recipes or even a glass of water. Here’s a rundown of their combined health benefits for weight, heart health and more: 1. Combat Allergies Cinnamon and honey both help fight allergies and allergy symptoms. A perfect example of how cinnamon can help with allergies can be seen in a study that evaluated its ability to control the powerful allergen house mites. This allergen has become a global problem, and researchers from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment found that at least 45 percent of young people with asthma are allergic to house dust mites. Researchers from Egypt tested the effect that various essential oils had in killing the highly allergic house mite and found that cinnamon was the most potent agent. This is due to cinnamon’s component cinnamaldehyde. Note: Cinnamon oil is toxic to cats and shouldn’t be used in cat households. Honey also serves as a natural therapeutic agent for fighting allergies. Ingesting just a teaspoon of local raw honey every day can boost your immune system and fight allergies by helping build a tolerance to local pollen. The International Archives of Allergy and Immunology published an article that analyzed this theory and discovered that preseasonal use of birch pollen honey helped people with birch pollen allergies by lowering total symptoms by 60 percent. Those treated with honey experienced twice as many asymptomatic days, had 70 percent fewer days with severe symptoms and used 50 percent less antihistamines compared to the group that took conventional medications for allergies. 2. Improve Diabetes Symptoms Cinnamon and honey together can be beneficial for healthy blood sugar management. Research published in the journal Nutrition Research suggests that up to 1,500 milligrams of cinnamon supplementation benefits the lipid profile, liver enzymes, insulin resistance and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in diabetics and people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients. According to a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, honey has been observed to cause a lower elevation of plasma glucose levels in diabetics compared to dextrose and sucrose. Some suggest that the insulin-boosting power of cinnamon can counteract this glucose elevation in honey, which would make your honey and cinnamon mixture a low glycemic indexfood. 3. Fight Acne and Skin Infections Because of the combination’s antimicrobial capacity, cinnamon oil mixed with honey is used all over the world to treat skin conditions, such as acne and skin issues. Researchers from Iran even discovered that the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of honey are actually more potent in treating wounds and burns and result in less skin problems than conventional medicine. A 2017 study published in Phytotherapy Research found that cinnamon essential oil significantly inhibited the production of several inflammatory biomarkers that are involved in skin inflammation and tissue remodeling. It works as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that can help soothe some skin conditions and improve the immune response. 4. Relieve Common Cold and Other Respiratory Issues The cinnamon-honey combination helps relieve common cold and respiratory symptoms, like sore throat, by fighting infections, boosting immunity and providing antioxidants. In a study published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, cinnamon essential oil was found to be highly effective in slowing the growth of a number of bacteria and fungi. The study showed that cinnamon oil inhibits the growth of E. coli, candida and staph aureus — all microorganisms that can cause a number of diseases, including the common cold. Research shows that honey is better than no treatment in reducing the frequency of cough and may even be more effective than diphenhydramine, an antihistamine. Plus, there’s evidence that honey is loaded with protective antioxidants that help fight respiratory conditions and many other health issues. Regularly combining cinnamon’s antimicrobial properties with immune-boosting raw honey boosts the body’s immunity and ability to fight off respiratory infections like the common cold. If you happen to get some kind of respiratory condition, consuming cinnamon and honey may help shorten your recovery time. 5. Fight UTIs Cinnamomum zeylanicum works as a powerful antibacterial agent, and research shows that it effectively inhibits the growth of gram-negative bacteria like E. coli, the main cause of urinary tract infections. A lab study conducted in Algeria found that when honey was tested against 11 multi-drug-resistant bacterial strains that were isolated from urinary tract infections of pregnant women, it exhibited potent antibacterial activity. Ingesting a combination of cinnamon powder and honey not only helps destroy the bacteria within the urinary tract, but it may also inhibit the growth of germs living in the bladder, thereby working as a potential preventative measure against bladder infections. 6. Soothe Digestive Issues Honey and cinnamon have become quite popular in managing digestive issues, such as constipation, nausea and ulcers. This makes sense, as these superfoods have been used as natural remedies for digestive ailments by our ancestors. Honey has proved to be a predigested nectar, so it is easy for the body to break it down. That can soothe an aggravated system. Cinnamon has antimicrobial characteristics that have helped countless people with bacterial overload in their digestive systems. This is especially true for people suffering from an E. coli infection, like a UTI. 7. Boost Energy Cinnamon and honey feature beneficial compounds that help boost energy. Chinese folk medicine has used cinnamon to promote healthy energy flow for centuries, and because of its insulin-boosting property, cinnamon has been known to give people energy as it stabilizes your blood sugar and improves insulin action in the brain. Honey is packed with micronutrients and antioxidants that help boost energy levels, fight inflammation and reduce signs of aging. When you take a teaspoon mixture of the two, you get a low-glycemic boost to help fuel your body, whether you just need a pick-me-up or you’re trying to get through a workout. 8. Treat Gingivitis The past few years, several studies have come out showing that Manuka honey can help treat gingivitis and periodontal disease. Due to its superior antimicrobial properties, researchers from the School of Dentistry at the University of Otago in New Zealand discovered that chewing or sucking on a Manuka honey product not only caused a 35 percent decrease in plaque, but it led to a 35 percent reduction in bleeding sites in people suffering from gingivitis. When combined with the powerful antimicrobial cinnamon, regular use of the amazing mixture can do wonders to your choppers. Honey and cinnamon benefits are proving to be a winning combination when it comes to dental health. How to Use One of the easiest ways to use honey and cinnamon to boost your health is to simply combine a half teaspoon of powdered cinnamon with a teaspoon of organic raw honey and ingest the mixture once daily. You can add this combination to water or use it to make an energizing and immune-boosting drink. This secret detox drink, for example, is also made with cinnamon and honey, along with other detoxifying ingredients like apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper and lemon juice. Of course, there are many other ways to use cinnamon and honey in your cooking and add it to your diet. They can be added to your smoothie, used to make herbal tea and added to your homemade baked goods. This delicious gluten-free coffee cake is made with both cinnamon and honey. You can also apply cinnamon powder (or one to two drops of cinnamon oil) and honey to your skin to fight acne and skin issues. Simply create a paste by combining the two ingredients. Then apply it onto the area of concern before bed so it can sit for several hours. However, before using honey and cinnamon topically, do a patch test to make sure that your skin won’t have any adverse reactions. Risks and Side Effects Cinnamon and honey are safe for internal and topical use, but like all foods, some people may react adversely. If you experience skin irritation, stomach pain, sweating, diarrhea or nausea after using cinnamon or honey, stop taking right away. If you use cinnamon essential oil, remember that a small amount (one to two drops) goes a long way. Perform a patch test on your skin before...

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DMN, CNS – Strawberries are one of the most universally loved fruits with good reason. Beyond just looking (can anyone actually resist that juicy red color) and tasting delicious, they’re extremely versatile. You can make strawberry lemonade, throw them in a smoothie or even use them as a teeth whitener! But one of my favorite ways to use strawberries is baking them into a loaf of strawberry bread. If you’ve never tried strawberry bread, prepare to be dazzled. This recipe creates a fresh loaf of the stuff that’s full of heart-healthy coconut oil, crunchy pecan nuts for a dose of healthy fats and cinnamon, one of the healthiest herbs. Because it uses gluten-free flour, it’s appropriate for those following a gluten-free diet and is vegetarian friendly, too. It does double duty as a sweet breakfast — combine it with yogurt for more protein — or a dessert. And because this strawberry bread recipe requires only 15 minutes of hands-on time, it’s the perfect recipe to make when company unexpectedly arrives. Let’s get started, shall we? How to Make Strawberry Bread Choose the freshest, juiciest strawberries you can get your hands on and slice ‘em up. Throw them in a bowl and then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of coconut sugar, reserving the rest. Steal a few sugary berries from the bowl and nibble. I won’t tell. In a separate bowl, combine flour, the rest of your coconut sugar, cinnamon, salt and baking soda and stir to combine. Back to the berry bowl! Add coconut oil and eggs into the bowl and then add in the bowl of dry ingredients. Don’t mix these up too much; we want to stir these together until all the ingredients are just combined. Add in pecans (or another nut of your preference — even chocolate chips would be delicious!) and transfer the whole heaping mixture to a standard-sized greased loaf pan. Bake for 50 minutes or until done. Tip: stick a toothpick in the loaf. When the toothpick comes out clean, the loaf is ready. Let the loaf cool and enjoy! If you’re serving this as a dessert, a heaping scoop of ice cream makes a delicious accompaniment to this strawberry bread recipe. Enjoy! Strawberry Bread Recipe DESCRIPTION One of my favorite ways to use strawberries is baking them into a loaf of strawberry bread. If you’ve never tried strawberry bread, prepare to be dazzled. INGREDIENTS 1 cup fresh strawberries ½ cup coconut oil 2 eggs, beaten 1½ cups gluten-free flour 1 cup coconut sugar 1½ teaspoons cinnamon ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon sea salt ½ cup pecans, chopped INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Slice strawberries and place in a small bowl. Sprinkle lightly with coconut sugar. In a big mixing bowl, mix coconut oil and eggs together. Add flour, rest of coconut sugar, cinnamon, salt and baking soda. Stir in the strawberries and pecans. Transfer mixture to greased (with coconut oil) loaf pan. Bake for 50 minutes or until cooked through. To read the original article click here. For more articles from Dr. Axe click here.

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DMN, CNS – Not a cookie or muffin, not quite a bread or a cake — yes, the scone is in a category of its own, and my easy chocolate chip scones recipe is perhaps the best scone recipe I make. What are scones? A staple in Britain for years, scones are most similar to biscuits. They’re wonderful served alongside tea, as after-dinner dessert or when you want to knock the socks off guests without slaving away in the kitchen. We love scones in my house, and these healthy chocolate chip scones are always a favorite. As far as working with dough goes, this chocolate chip scones recipe is pretty straightforward and easy to make. Even if you’re a baking novice, you shouldn’t have trouble with these scones. I love the hint of sweetness from the chocolate chips, but you could also add in your favorite dried fruits along with them. For example, dried cherries would complement the dark chocolate well! Key Ingredients What is the secret to making good scones? Healthy, fresh ingredients, of course! Some scones recipes load up on sugar or artificial sweeteners, but my chocolate chip scone recipe uses coconut sugar as a healthier alternative. Here are the other key players in this recipe: Dark chocolate chips: Chocolate gets a bad rap, but if you opt for dark chocolate, in moderation of course, it can be a very healthy addition to the diet. That’s why we opt for dark chocolate chips, which is loaded with cancer-fighting and immune-boosting antioxidants that support skin, eye, heart and brain health. Cinnamon: High in manganese, calcium, iron and vitamin K, cinnamon can help relieve inflammation, stabilize blood sugar and even combat candida. Kefir: A probiotics powerhouse, kefir provides an array of vitamins and supports gut health. That’s not all. Kefir benefits immune, bone and skin health too. Ready to put on your apron and make the best chocolate chip scones with wholesome ingredients? Let’s get started with this easy scone recipe! How to Make Chocolate Chip Scones How do you make chocolate chip scones from scratch? Begin by preheating the oven and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper. You’ll be thankful for this step later, as the paper will prevent the scones from sticking to your pan. Mix up your gluten-free flour (yep, those avoiding gluten can enjoy this recipe, too!), coconut sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and sea salt. Grate the cold butter into the flour mixture until the whole mix is coarse and your butter is the size of peas. Separately, mix probiotic-loaded kefir with protein-rich eggs and vanilla. Take this wet mix of ingredients, and slowly pour it over your flour mixture, making sure all the ingredients are just moistened. Now we’re getting to the good stuff: Add in your dark chocolate chips. I suggest using one cup, but a few extra wouldn’t hurt either! Be careful not to overwork the dough here, or you’ll wind up with dry scones. Instead, just gently fold in the chocolate chips, making sure they’re evenly dispersed throughout the dough. Next, turn your dough out onto the countertop, and press it into a large disc shape. If you’re crafty, you can try a different shape. For the rest of us, the disc shape will work just fine. Transfer the dough-disc to a baking sheet, and using a knife or a pizza cutter, cut the disc into equal-sized wedges. It’s action time! Slide your baking sheet into the oven, and bake for about 20 to 25 minutes, until your scones are cooked through and golden on top. Let them cool and serve. You’re going to love digging in to these! Similar Recipes Here a few other recipes to satisfy your sweet tooth: Gluten-Free Lemon Ginger Scone Recipe Gluten-Free Lemon Bars with Cranberries Recipe Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cookies Recipe Chocolate Chip Scones Recipe DESCRIPTION We love scones in my house, and this healthy chocolate chip scones recipe is always a favorite. This one is straightforward and easy to make. INGREDIENTS 2 cups gluten-free flour ½ cup coconut sugar 2½ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon sea salt 8 tablespoons cold butter ½ cup kefir 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup dark chocolate chips INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl, mix flour, coconut sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Grate the butter and toss into flour mixture until mixture is coarse and the butter is the size of peas. In a separate bowl, mix kefir, egg and vanilla. Pour slowly over flour mixture and toss the mixture together until everything is just moistened. Fold in chocolate chips, being careful not to overwork the dough. Press into a disc shape and cut into equal wedges. Place on baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes until cooked through and golden. NOTES You can add dried fruit to extra flavor, such as dried cherries. Make sure you use grass-fed butter. To read the original article click here. For more articles from Dr. Axe click here.

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DMN, CNS – If you are feeling weighed down and sluggish, it may be time for my secret detox drink, which can help cleanse your body and make you feel rejuvenated. For many years, I’ve added detox drinks to my health regime because as toxins leave my body, I feel clear-headed and energized. Plus, recipes like this one don’t require a blender or juicer, so they are simple and easily accessible. This is a simple beverage recipe that takes only minutes to prepare and includes key ingredients for natural detoxification, including lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, ginger, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. It’s both refreshing and energizing, so give it a try today for the little boost we all need from time to time. Why Drink the Secret Detox Drink? Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the everyday chemicals that threaten your health, especially when they’re hidden in our clothing, furniture, soaps and shampoos. On top of that, we are constantly exposed to environmental pollutants, and dangerous chemicals in our foods like heavy metals, pesticides and preservatives. In order to avoid toxic overload that will leave you feeling fatigued, moody, bloated and achey, it’s a great idea to use detox drinks to help cleanse and purify your body. Key Ingredients My secret detox drink contains some of the best ingredients for detoxification. Apple cider vinegar has shown to improve your metabolism and digestive function, while working to cleanse your liver and lymphatic system. Lemon juice has an alkaline effect on your body and helps to regulate your pH levels. Drinking lemon water, or adding it to your drinks and juices, can help to boost your energy levels, detoxify your body, keep skin glowing (thanks to vitamin C) and improve immune function. Cinnamon, cayenne pepper and ginger contain therapeutic compounds that help to reduce inflammation, aid digestion and boost your metabolism, which is a helpful step toward weight loss. That’s why drinking ginger tea, for example, is so popular. It contains valuable compounds that boost your health and promote detoxification. An optional ingredient for your detox drink is raw honey. I like to add raw honey to many of my health drinks and detox smoothie recipes because it’s a nutrient-dense natural sweetener. It adds a little sweetness to this drink while nourishing the body with antioxidants. Nutrition Facts One glass of my secret detox drink made using this recipe (with the honey) contains roughly the following: 48 calories 0.5 grams protein 0.4 grams fat 11 grams carbohydrates 1.2 grams fiber 6 grams sugar 0.8 milligrams manganese (47 percent DV) 753 IUs vitamin A (32 percent DV) 13.3 milligrams vitamin C (18 percent DV) 0.07 milligrams vitamin B6 (6 percent DV) 0.6 milligrams vitamin E (4 percent DV) 0.6 milligrams iron (4 percent DV) 0.3 milligrams vitamin B3 (3 percent DV) 10 milligrams magnesium (3 percent DV) 120 milligrams potassium (3 percent DV) 0.02 milligrams copper (3 percent DV) How to Make the Secret Detox Drink The first step in making my secret detox drink is to warm 12 to 16 ounces of water. Now all you have to do is add your ingredients. Start by adding 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your warm water. Then stir in ½ to 1 teaspoon of ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne pepper. The last two ingredients are 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of raw, local honey, which is optional, but will add a little sweetness to your drink. Stir it all together, and your detox drink is ready to enjoy. I like to have it when it’s still warm, but you can drink it at any temperature. For more intense detoxification, I recommend drinking this detox drink three times daily about 20 minutes before meals for two weeks to flush out toxins. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to cleanse your body and boost your energy, have this drink once a day before breakfast or lunch.
