Castor oil is a non-volatile fatty oil that is derived from the seeds of the castor bean (Ricinus communis) plant, aka castor seeds. The castor oil plant belongs to the flowering spurge family called Euphorbiaceae and is mainly cultivated in Africa, South America and India (India accounts for over 90% of castor oil exports globally). It’s very thick with a color that ranges from clear to amber or somewhat green. It’s both used topically on the skin and taken by mouth (it has a mild scent and taste). Studies suggest that many of castor oil’s benefits come down to its chemical composition. It’s classified as a type of triglyceride fatty acid, and almost 90 percent of its fatty acid content is a specific and rare compound called ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is not found in many other plants or substances, making the castor plant unique since it’s a concentrated source. Aside from its primary constituent, ricinoleic acid, castor oil also contains other beneficial salts and esters that mainly act as skin-conditioning agents. Compounds found in castor can help stabilize the texture and consistency of products, which is why castor oil is used in so many cosmetics, hair and skincare treatments. Indeed, research studies have found that castor oil contains therapeutic components including fatty acids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, amino acids, terpenoids and phytosterols. These various compounds give the oil the following properties and potential health benefits: Anti-diabetic Anti-inflammatory Antimicrobial Antioxidant Hepatoprotective (ability to prevent damage to the liver) Free radical scavenging Wound-healing Types Castor oil can be used in several ways: orally (taken by mouth), applied topically on the skin, applied to the hair, or massaged into the skin in the form of a castor oil pack. Remember, any oil you ingest or consume (and even the kinds you apply directly to your skin) should be of the highest quality to ensure safety and effectiveness. Where can you buy castor oil products? Ideally look for a reputable brand of cold-pressed, pure, organic castor oil at your local health food store, or online if you can’t find it in stores. Here are some of the most common types of castor oils you may find in stores: Cold-pressed castor oil — This type is produced by cold-pressing the castor bean seeds to extract their natural oil content. This results in a high quality product that is recommended for internal use. You may also want to check that the oil is pesticide-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free and free of artificial color or fragrances. Yellow castor oil — This type is made from the castor bean, usually through pressing with no heat involved, although some manufacturers use chemicals in their processing. Generally speaking, the lighter color the oil is, the “purer” the product is. Jamaican black castor oil — This oil is developed by first roasting the castor beans, which results in a dark color (and burnt smell). This is the method that is traditionally used in Jamaica. Ash found in this type results in a higher pH (alkaline) product that is believed to have more clarifying properties that may help open pores. Benefits 1. Acts as a laxative and relieve constipation Studies indicate that castor oil works like a natural, mild stimulant laxative when taken orally. It can provide constipation relief, reduce straining during defecation and enhance the feeling of complete evacuation after a bowel movement. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved castor oil for use as a laxative. Its active ingredient, ricinoleic acid, gets released into the intestine, where it helps with the process of digestion, nutrient absorption and cleansing the system. It increases movement of the muscles that push material through the intestines, helping to pass a bowel movement. One study looked at the effects of castor oil packs on elderly people experiencing constipation. The study participants were monitored for a week before, three days during and four days after the oil pack administration. Eighty percent of the individuals studied had been experiencing constipation for 10 years or longer. The researchers found that the oil packs were able to decrease constipation symptoms, most specifically straining during defecation. Consult your healthcare professional before using long-term, as castor oil may lead to complications. Also be aware that side effects of ingesting castor oil may include diarrhea and abdominal cramping. 2. Moisturizes skin Castor oil is completely natural and free of synthetic chemicals (as long as you use pure 100 percent pure oil, of course), yet it’s rich in skin-boosting ingredients like fatty acids. In particular, its main monounsaturated fatty acid is ricinoleic acid, which possesses moisturizing properties. Applying this oil to dry or irritated skin can help to discourage dryness and keep it well moisturized, since it prevents water loss. It can also be combined with select carrier oils to avoid any potential allergic reactions. Regardless, it’s a good idea to do a small skin patch test first. 3. May boost wound healing Studies indicate that castor oil can boost wound and pressure ulcer healing thanks to its moisturizing as well as antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. In particular, its main component ricinoleic acid appears to help lower skin inflammation and support skin healing. It mixes well with other ingredients like almond, olive and coconut oil, all of which have unique benefits for skin. Lab studies have shown that castor oil is effective against many types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Out of all the staphylococcal bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus is considered the most dangerous and can cause mild to serious skin infections and other concerning staph infection symptoms. 4. May help induce labor While no approved by the FDA and considered an off-label use, castor oil may help induce labor in some women. For centuries, pregnant women at full term have taken it orally to help speed up uterus contractions. According to studies, the reason castor oil can work to induce labor is due to the fact that the ricinoleic acid in the oil can activate EP3 prostanoid receptors in the uterus. A 2018 observational case control study found that castor oil use produced a higher probability of labor within 24 hours after ingesting. It noted, “Castor oil can be considered a safe non-pharmacological method for labor induction.” In addition, the full-term women study subjects (between 40 and 41 weeks) who took castor oil had a lower incidence of Caesarean section. Regardless, the overall consensus is that castor oil needs to be researched further to prove that it is safe for pregnant mothers ready to give birth. In addition, it may cause nausea among these mothers, which is another reason why most hospitals do not approve its use. Of course, consult with your healthcare professional before considering to use castor oil before giving birth. 5. May lower symptoms of arthritis and joint pain Castor oil is often used as a natural treatment for arthritis pain, joint swelling and inflammation. It has natural anti-inflammatory properties that make it an ideal massage oil that can be applied to aching joints, muscles or tissue. Observational studies have shown that topical application of ricinoleic acid (the main component of castor oil), “exerts remarkable analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.” A randomized, double-blind, comparative clinical study looked at the effects of castor oil capsules on symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. Subjects were either given a castor oil capsule (0.9 milliliters) three times daily for four weeks or a capsule of diclofenac sodium (50 milligrams) for the same amount of time. Overall, they found that castor oil worked as well as conventional treatment and can be used as “an effective therapy in primary knee osteoarthritis.” Risks and side effects Reports show that this oil can be safely taken internally. When swallowed, it’s hydrolyzed in the small intestine by pancreatic enzymes, leading to the release of glycerol and ricinoleic acid, along with other beneficial metabolites. Castor oil is classified by the Food and Drug Administration as generally recognized as safe for both topical and internal use. However, drinking castor oil may still potentially cause side effects. Side effects can include abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, especially when used in large amounts. Some people experience nausea and signs of mild irritation in their gut lining when taking castor oil. That said, it’s very unlikely to cause severe reactions as long as someone is not allergic and doesn’t overdose. If you’re pregnant, you should not take castor oil to induce labor without speaking to your healthcare professional first. You should also avoid using it to relieve constipation during pregnancy. Allergic reactions to castor oil (used topically or internally) are possible, so seek emergency medical care if you believe you are having a serious allergic reaction. When using castor oil topically, it’s still best to start slowly and perform a skin patch test on a small area of your skin before applying larger amounts, and also keep it away from your eyes, inside of your nose, children and pets. If you’re currently taking medication or have any medical condition, always speak with your healthcare professional before using castor oil. Frequently asked questions How should one use castor oil as a laxative ? The dosage of castor oil taken internally depends on what you’re using it for, along with factors like your age, existing medical conditions and response to laxative-type treatments. If taking castor oil orally, a commonly recommended dose for adults (such as to relieve constipation) is 15–60 mL, taken in one single dose. This is equivalent to about one to four teaspoons once per day. Many people mix it with water or another beverage before drinking. Read package directions carefully before using castor oil or a castor oil pack kit. Be careful not to increase your dose above the recommended amount, start slowly and don’t take it for more than seven days consecutively, unless you’re told to do so by your healthcare professional. Be aware that castor oil can work for constipation relief quite fast so it’s not recommended to take it before bed. Wash your face first in warm water to open up the pores and then massage some of the oil into your face and leave it on overnight, rinsing the next morning. If leaving the oil on your face overnight causes greasiness, reduce the amount of time until you rinse it off. You can also mix one-quarter cup of castor oil and three-quarters cup virgin coconut oil (fractionated is best), then apply to your body and face. For oily skin, you may choose jojoba oil, grapeseed oil or olive oil instead. Castor oil’s anti-inflammatory properties may also soothe a sunburn. Apply castor oil mixed with coconut oil (in a 1:1 proportion) to the affected area, or try the same remedy as a natural lip balm to solve chapped or sunburnt lips. Does castor oil work for hair growth? Castor oil is a popular natural remedy for hair growth and overall hair health. These versatile mushrooms are also adaptogenic, meaning that they can help the body adjust to prolonged physical and psychological stress. The team pointed out reishi’s high levels of triterpenoids – which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to protect heart and liver health – and polysaccharides, such as beta-glucans, which can help maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. The authors declared that the most studied of all reishi benefits involve the fungus’ ability to stimulate the immune system. In a placebo-controlled study published in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, twelve weeks of supplementation with beta-glucans from reishi mushrooms increased the amounts of lymphocytes (immune system cells critical to the body’s defense) in children with immune deficiency. In addition to their gifts to the body, reishi mushrooms can also benefit the psyche. However, these pills may provide only partial relief and can feature unwanted side effects. Hence, there is an ongoing search for natural alternatives. In a 2020 trial involving women with fibromyalgia, volunteers were given either six grams of reishi extract or a placebo daily – with intriguing results. Although the reishi group didn’t see any statistically significant differences in body aches or other symptoms, they reported feeling substantially happier! The intervention reduced depression levels from 7.6 to 5.36 – which is near the cut-off level for a diagnosis of depression. The participants reported the reishi’s efficacy at between 2 and 3 on the Global Impression of Improvement Scale (GIIS), which means that they quantified improvements in the way they were feeling on a spectrum ranging from “slightly improved” to “greatly improved.” Meanwhile, the control group did not fare nearly as well, ranking their status between 3 and 4 on the GIIS. This signifies that they either noticed no change at all or were only minimally better. Clearly, these findings – brighter mood, increased happiness, and less perception of physical discomfort – call for further exploration. Breast cancer patients struggling with mood disturbances find relief Depression, fatigue, and anxiety can sap the strength and threaten the morale of those battling cancer. However, a four-week study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed that a reishi extract (Ganoderma lucidum spore powder) reduced cancer-related emotional upset, tiredness, and improved quality of life in women with breast cancer who were undergoing endocrine therapy. Incidentally, earlier studies have supported reishi’s calming effects. A study published in Cellular and Molecular Biology showed that lucidone D, a terpene from reishi mushrooms, helped to reduce body aches and promote sleep. In yet another study, reishi extracts improved quality of life and alleviated tiredness and physical discomfort in people with neurasthenia. Access the power of reishi through convenient supplements With their deep reddish-bronze color and glossy sheen, reishi mushrooms have a distinctive appearance – and a notoriously bitter taste to go along with it. Although perfectly edible, this harsh taste is why people rarely nibble reishi mushrooms “solo.” Fortunately, supplements are available in powders, tinctures, capsules, and teas. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Universite de Montreal via Newswise &#8211; Metformin, a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, could help deplete the viral reservoir and eliminate it entirely in people living with HIV who receive antiretroviral therapy, Canadian researchers say in a new study. In 2021, a team led by immunologist Petronela Ancuta of Université de Montréal’s affiliated hospital research centre, the CRCHUM, showed that metformin, when taken for three months, improved patients’ immunity and reduced the chronic inflammation usually associated with complications such as cardiovascular disease. One reason these benefits are so effective is that metformin inhibits the activity of the mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) molecule, which in turn slows down HIV replication in the cells of patients infected with the virus. In the journal iScience, Ancuta and her student Augustine Fert, the study’s first author and a recent Ph.D. holder, go further. They studied the molecular mechanisms of action of metformin on HIV replication in CD4 T lymphocytes, which are immune system cells that provide shelter for the virus. In these reservoirs, HIV keeps on replicating, which contributes to the chronic inflammation by constantly activating the immune system. “The results of our in vitro tests on cells from people living with HIV and treated with antiretroviral therapy caught us off guard at first,” said Ancuta. “They were a bit surprising. We discovered that metformin had both a proviral and an antiviral effect. The drug helped boost the number of HIV-infected cells, while also stopping the virus from escaping the cell.” Antibodies to the rescue Another benefit of metformin is that it overexpresses the BST2 protein, which acts as a kind of glue to keep virions clinging to the surface of HIV-infected cells. The immune system then spots them and can target them with antibodies. “Together with my colleague Andrés Finzi, we tested the ability of several broad-spectrum neutralizing anti-HIV antibodies to recognize viral reservoir cells after metformin exposure in vitro,” said Ancuta. “Some of them recognized the virus very well, suggesting their ability to attract and trigger the destruction of infected cells by NK cells through a process of cellular cytotoxicity.” These recent scientific advances mean that the “shock-and-kill” eradication strategy, often used in the fight against HIV, can be foreseen in a different way, she added. “In people living with HIV and treated with antiretroviral therapy, we could use metformin to reactivate the reservoir cells responsible for viral replication upon treatment interruption, in combination with antibodies that are already used clinically and well tolerated. These antibodies can then detect the rare infected cells and eliminate them.” In the next phase of her research, Ancuta plans to launch a clinical trial to validate her in vitro research results, in collaboration with Finzi and their CRCHUM colleague Nicolas Chomont, and Jean-Pierre Routy of the McGill University Health Centre Research Institute. Before she can move forward with this strategy, she will test it in preclinical models. About this study “Metformin facilitates viral reservoir reactivation and their recognition by anti-HIV-1 envelope antibodies,” by Augustine Fert under the supervision of Petronela Ancuta et al., was published online in iScience on Aug. 8, 2024. The study received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian Consortium for HIV Cure Research (CanCURE), the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR), the International AIDS Society (IAS), the Fonds de recherche du Québec and the Fondation du CHUM. The FDA and others warn that you can overdose on too much licorice – and for some individuals, this is absolutely true. According to the FDA: “…black licorice contains the compound glycyrrhizin, which is the sweetening compound derived from licorice root. Glycyrrhizin can cause potassium levels in the body to fall. When that happens, some people experience abnormal heart rhythms, as well as high blood pressure, edema (swelling), lethargy, and congestive heart failure.” Researchers at the University of Massachusetts add that too much licorice may have an effect on adrenal hormones and can lead to a condition called pseudoaldosteronism. For these reasons, most experts recommend that healthy individuals interested in using the vast healing power of licorice utilize deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL, where the glycyrrhizin has been removed (although glycyrrhizin itself is considered to be one of the healing substances in the root). Many also recommend not using any licorice product or supplement for more than four weeks at a time. Of course, if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, stop using it right away. I would add that if you are on any kind of cancer-healing protocol, stay away from the candy version. This is not a healthy way to utilize the healing effects of this powerful herb. The “candy” version often contains more sugar than the actual herbal extract, and science has confirmed that cancer feeds on sugar. In addition, many commercially processed licorice candies are created using ammonium chloride. Although no tests have been done as yet to determine this chemical’s carcinogenic effects, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control have found that chronic exposure to ammonium chloride can lead to acute respiratory problems. What are the powerful cancer-killing properties? Interestingly, the University of Massachusetts researchers and others in Western medicine recommend that individuals with hormone-sensitive cancers (such as breast, ovarian, uterine, and prostate cancer) avoid using licorice altogether. However, this advice is in direct contrast to recent studies that have found specific tumor-reducing, immune-boosting, and hormone-regulating factors within the root. Researchers at the University Sains School of Medical Sciences in Kelantan, Malaysia, discovered eight different bioactive immunomodulators within herbs such as licorice, curcumin, apricot, ginseng, and a host of others. Of these eight, four of them can be found in licorice, including: Ajoene, an anti-fungal Arctigenin, a lignan with anti-cancer effects β-carotene, a powerful anti-oxidant; and Glabridin acid can also prevents DNA damage caused by oxidation. Other studies have found similar connections between the properties of licorice and breast cancer healing and prevention: Researchers at Rutgers University were able to isolate a particular polyphenol molecule, ß-hydroxy-DHP (BHP), extracted from licorice root. This molecule has the ability to kill breast and prostate cancer tumor cells while leaving healthy cells unaffected. The Chinese have long used licorice root as a hormone balancer and for complications associated with menopause. A study conducted by Nanjing Medical University in Nanjing, China, looked specifically at the Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) content found in licorice root and its effect on estrogen-positive breast cancer. The researchers found that licorice extract had an effect on estrogen levels that was breast cancer-preventative in a dose-dependent manner: the DMSO stunted cancer cell proliferation in high doses yet had the opposite effect at low doses. Other studies have found that licorice root helps to positively balance testosterone metabolism, decrease serotonin re-uptake, and reduce cortisol levels, all three of which are important to breast cancer prevention and healing. Finally, licorice has proven to be a powerful immune system regulator. Isoliquiritigenin and Naringenin found in the root can promote T cell growth. Glycyrrhizin and other flavonoids found in licorice can help reduce inflammation in the body overall. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Brian Blum via Israel21c &#8211; Immunotherapy — activating the immune system to fight cancer — has been one of the most significant developments in the world of cancer treatment. But it still isn’t a cure-all, and scientists have been working to improve its delivery and efficacy. A recent breakthrough by Israeli and Portuguese scientists could result in cancer immunotherapy in a pill form that wouldn’t require a hospital stay or intravenous injection, would be less expensive, and may offer other benefits as well. Researchers at Tel Aviv University and the University of Lisbon, led in Israel by Prof. Ronit Satchi-Fainaro, head of the center for cancer biology research and the laboratory for cancer research and nanomedicine at TAU’s medical school, developed a synthetic molecule that is many magnitudes smaller than even the most advanced immunotherapy antibodies. The small size allows the molecule to penetrate and reach less accessible and less exposed areas of solid tumors. Moreover, unlike traditional immunotherapy antibodies, which have a hard time surviving the harsh acidity of the intestinal tract, the new molecules “have been designed especially to be resilient and not degrade in the gut, which opens up the exciting possibility of giving them orally,” explains Satchi-Fainaro. Most immunotherapy medications must travel through blood vessels to reach the tumor. The new tiny molecules can find their way to the target by diffusion without needing the “road” of blood vessels. The small synthetic molecules also would be much less expensive to produce at large scale than are today’s biological-based immunotherapy drugs, potentially enabling many more people to access immunotherapy. “We have already synthesized the small molecule with simple equipment, in a short time and at a fraction of the cost,” Satchi-Fainaro notes. Allowing patients to take the drug orally at home will also bring down the price by eliminating hospital costs. As described in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer, the team has tested the molecule in vitro as well as on a human tumor in a special lab model, but not yet with actual patients. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>American College of Cardiology (ACC) via Newswise &#8211; Older breast cancer survivors with cardiometabolic risk factors who restricted food intake to eight hours during the weekday, followed by 16 hours of fasting, lowered their risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) after a few weeks, according to a new research letter publishing today in JACC: CardioOncology. The study is a part of the upcoming mini-focus issue, “Physical Activity and Lifestyle Interventions in Cancer.” The authors looked at 22 individuals with a body mass index who were classified as overweight or obese (&#62;25kg/m2), had completed cardiotoxic treatment (anthracyclines, a commonly used chemotherapy drug) within the past one to six years, and were an average age of 66 years. For eight weeks participants were allowed to eat freely between 12-8 p.m. on weekdays and at any time on the weekends. Outside of those hours, participants were asked to consume only water, black coffee or black tea. Using the Canadian Cardiovascular Society scoring system to calculate the 10-year Framingham Risk Score, the authors found that CVD risk decreased from 10.9% to 8.6% at the end of the trial period. “This rigorously designed, well-executed single-arm feasibility study generates important hypotheses and questions about the role of time restricted eating relevant to cancer survivors,” said Bonnie Ky, MD, MSCE, editor-in-chief of JACC: CardioOncology. “For example, what is the basis of the inter-individual variation of the response to time restricted eating in the Framingham Risk Score, and will this help identify patients who are most likely to benefit from this strategy? Though parents have certainly been warned about subjecting their little ones to too much sun, the truth is the sun has its benefits.  Not to mention that slathering on commercial sunscreens with potentially harmful chemicals poses a danger, now there is even more reason to let kids, tweens, teens, and adults enjoy the sun without excessive worry. Sunlight May Reduce Risk of MS, Research Suggests MS, short for multiple sclerosis, might be less likely to develop in individuals subjected to sunlight in considerable amounts at a relatively young age.  The study referenced above indicates an association between heightened exposure to ultraviolet light and a reduction in the chances of developing MS.  However, it must also be noted that significant exposure to sunlight without protection has the potential to heighten the chances of skin cancer. The study pertained to slightly more than 330 individuals between the ages of 3 and 22.  The study participants had MS for an average period of seven months.  As revealed in the web-based issue of Neurology, the result of the study was officially made available to the public in December of 2021. Responses to study inquiries showed that about 20% spent less than half an hour outdoors one summer ago.  Only 6% of those without MS spent less than half an hour outside during the summer.  The study showed that those who averaged half an hour to a full hour outside had a 52% less risk for developing MS when compared to individuals who spent less than half an hour outdoors on summer days. Sun Exposure Is More Important Than Most Think The key takeaway from the study is that the sun has meaningful benefits.  Exposure to sunlight enhances vitamin levels, stimulates the skin’s immune cells that help protect against MS, and possibly even alters the functionality of immune cells to help guard against autoimmune diseases and maintain optimum health. It is interesting to note that some MS patients show symptoms during their childhood though the disease usually doesn’t fully manifest until the adult years of 20 to 50. Here Is Why Geography Is Important in the Context of MS The researchers also pointed out that those involved in the study who live in Florida were more than 20% less likely to develop MS than those living in New York state. The reduced chance of developing MS is likely the result of the heightened sunlight intensity in Florida. The study also revealed that exposure to the sun provides benefits dependent on the dose. In other words, the more time that one spends exposed to the sun, the lower the risk is for MS and other autoimmune disorders.  It is also interesting to note that the study reveals exposure to the sun’s rays in the initial year of life also played an important role in protecting against the development of MS.
