					<description><![CDATA[<p>Michael Greger M.D. FACLM via Nutrition Facts &#8211; Spending time in a forest, or even anticipating it, significantly lowers levels of cortisol (a stress hormone), more so than being in an urban area. Natural killer cells are one of the ways our body fights off cancer, and visiting a forest can induce a significant increase in both their numbers and their activity. I’ve previously shown how exposure to nature can have self-reported psychological benefits, but there was a dearth of data on changes in objective measurements, so I was excited to see this paper on the effects of forest bathing, “a traditional practice characterized by visiting a forest and breathing its air,” on levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the participants’ saliva. The level of cortisol in our saliva is considered an indicator of our stress level, and study participants’ salivary cortisol levels were significantly lower after walking in a forest or even just hanging out in one (“forest watching”), compared to walking or just being in a city, as you can see at 0:49 in my video Boosting Anticancer Immunity with Forest Bathing. However, the same effect was found before they went to the forest, too. Indeed, “forest bathing, in particular forest watching, was associated with significantly lower cortisol levels both before and after this practice if compared with visiting an urban area.” Therefore, it appears that just the thought of spending time in a forest relieves stress. So, “when comparing the effects of forest bathing versus urban visiting, the anticipated placebo effect…may play a more important role in influencing cortisol [stress] levels than the actual experience” of being in the forest. I was ready to dismiss this as just another nebulous psychological effect until I read this: “Studies on the effects of ‘Shinrin-yoku’ [forest bathing] on the immune function showed that visiting a forest can induce a significant increase in the number and activity of natural killer (NK) cells,” one of the ways our body fights off cancer. That got my attention. It all started with this study: Twelve men were taken on a long weekend trip to walk in the forest, and nearly all of them (11 out of 12) showed higher natural killer cell activity afterward. It wasn’t just a little increase either; they had about a 50 percent increase in NK cell activity after the trip compared to before they went to the forest, as you can see at 2:00 in my video. Now, exercise alone can affect immune function, but “there were no significant differences in walking steps before and during the trip.” The study participants were just walking in a forest instead. However, they were taken on a trip somewhere, which introduced other variables, so what about randomizing them to go on a city trip versus a forest trip? If there were some special forest effect, how long would it last? Do you have to walk in the forest every day? Before jumping into all that, let’s first see if it works in women, too. This study had the same kind of set-up, and the same kind of results: a significant boost in natural killer cell activity from walking in the woods. What’s more, this time, the participants were retested a week later, and their natural killer cell activity was still up. When they were retested a month after the trip their levels were back to baseline, as you can see at 2:45 in my video. So, walking in the woods once a week should do it, but the study involved a multi-day trip. Who can go to the forest all weekend, every weekend? How about just a day trip? The title gives it all away: “A Day Trip to a Forest Park Increases Human Natural Killer Activity and the Expression of Anti-Cancer Proteins in Male Subjects.” The same results and the same big jump measured the day after the trip compared to before and with the same staying power, as you can see at 3:08 in my video. And, natural killer cell activity was still boosted a week later. “This suggests that if people visit a suburban forest park once a week on a day trip, they may be able to maintain increased NK activity” and a boost in anticancer immune function. I’m still not convinced, though. How can you attribute the benefit to the forest itself, when all you have are before and after data? To make the case that nature had anything to do with it, you’d need a control group of study participants who took the same kind of trip but went somewhere else instead. And here we go. Again, the study title says it all: “Visiting a Forest, but Not a City, Increases Human Natural Killer Activity and Expression of Anti-Cancer Proteins.” By the end of the forest trip, the participants experienced a boost of 80 percent in NK activity after forest bathing, compared to only a 10 percent bump for the city walkers, as shown below and at 3:58 in my video. Both trips were matched for physical activity, alcohol, and sleep, too— other factors and behaviors that can affect immune function. So, we’ve got confirmation of boosted immunity, but only on the forest trip, “indicating that forest bathing does indeed enhance human NK activity.” Moreover, the researchers found that “the increased NK activity and numbers of NK cells induced by a forest bathing trip lasted more than 7 days, even 30 days, after the trip.” As you can see below and at 4:26 in my video, NK activity was still up a week later and even a bit up a month later. “This suggests that if people visit a forest once a month, they may be able to maintain increased NK activity. This may be important in health promotion and preventive medicine.” Now that we know that forest bathing induces a real effect, the next question is, Why? What is it about forests that give us the boost? (You can imagine Big Pharma wondering if it can be made into a pill.) We’ll find out next. Milk thistle, scientifically known as Silybum marianum, is prized by natural healers for its ability to eliminate liver ailments, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which is currently reaching epidemic proportions in the United States. But supporting liver health is not milk thistle’s only gift. Discover how this extraordinary herb can help you. Milk thistle protects against toxic effects from cancer treatment, arrests tumors The active ingredient in milk thistle, an antioxidant flavonoid called silymarin, reduces the inflammation and oxidative damage that can trigger cancer. It also helps preserve glutathione, the body’s premier inflammation-fighting antioxidant. Scientists have known for some time that milk thistle may act against cancer. In a review conducted at the University of Minnesota, researchers cited “strong evidence” for silymarin’s liver-protective and anti-cancer effects. Significantly, they credited silymarin with combating cancer by inhibiting the binding of toxins to cell membrane receptors. In a new study published in The International Journal of Oncology, researchers found that silibinin, a form of silymarin, suppressed chemoresistance, the condition in which cancer fails to respond to the effects of drugs. The team noted that silibinin also prevented further malignancy, protected against potentially cancer-causing DNA mutations, and inhibited tumor growth. In other research, researchers found that silymarin also helps prevent liver damage from chemotherapy and protects the skin and mucosal lining from damage from radiation therapy. Milk thistle is a potent antifungal agent Overgrowth of Candida albicans, a common fungus, can cause symptoms of fatigue, “brain fog,” digestive problems, and skin rashes. And, a growing problem of drug resistance in pharmaceutical antifungals – which parallels the current epidemic of antibiotic resistance – can make Candida difficult to treat. Researchers have found that silymarin can penetrate the cell membrane of the Candida microbe, stopping the pathogen’s growth and spread and helping to clear the overgrowth. In one recent study, a 90-day course of a combination of milk thistle, boswellia, and nettles slashed hemoglobin A1c levels – a measure of blood sugar over several months – by a substantial 19 percent. The herbal combination also drastically reduced blood sugar levels – from an average of 150 to 180 mg/dL to an average of 124 mg/dL – and triglyceride levels. Research has supported milk thistle’s beneficial effects on liver disease, with one study showing that hepatitis patients treated with silymarin returned to work sooner and experienced less depression and anxiety than those in the control group. In addition, milk thistle helps detoxify the liver and protect against injury from heavy metals and drugs. In a review published in Phytotherapy Research, the team credited silymarin with reducing liver injury caused by a variety of toxins, drugs, and heavy metals, including acetaminophen, carbon tetrachloride, radiation, alcohol, iron overload, and Amanita phalloides, a type of poisonous mushroom. As an added bonus: milk thistle’s protective effects also extend to the stomach. The herb has been shown to suppress gastric inflammation and protect against ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Surprising fact: Milk thistle has antidepressant properties Yet another surprising benefit of milk thistle is its ability to function as a natural mood elevator. Animal studies support its ability to reduce anxiety and depression caused by traumatic brain injury, which it appears to do by reducing the activity of microglial cells caused by a disturbance in the neural circuits between the limbic system and the cortex of the brain. In one study, silymarin performed as well as the pharmaceutical drugs fluoxetine (Prozac) and diazepam (Valium) in supporting mood. Researchers noted that silymarin reversed stress-induced changes to the hippocampus and cerebral cortex while boosting levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. Because of silymarin’s ability to reduce inflammation and neurodegeneration, researchers are even exploring its potential to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease. How should I take milk thistle? Experts recommend temporary short-term amounts of 150 mg, taken one to three times a day, for detoxification. A holistic healthcare provider may recommend 50 to 150 mg a day for liver support, maintenance, and longer-term use. Use a formulation standardized to 70 to 80 percent silymarin for best results. As always, consult your holistic doctor to determine if milk thistle is right for you and to determine the proper amount. Although it is generally considered safe and well tolerated, high amounts can cause mild digestive upset. Frankincense, meaning “true incense” is a resin that comes from any tree species that belongs to the genus Boswellia. Spreading their branches through the Middle East, Africa, and India, this tree’s roots run deep in ancient usage and text. While all Boswellia species can produce frankincense, Boswellia serrata is the supernal species that is adorned in traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda and Unani for producing exceptional extracts. Currently, there are 30 clinical studies on pubmed.gov, and 28 of those studies used B. serrata (the other 2 studies did not list a specific Boswellia species in their abstract). With a strong modern-day scientific backing, coupled with traditional use, Boswellia is a bright beacon pushing contemporary usage of natural medicines onward and upward. A few of its best-known therapeutic roles today include treating chronic health conditions like asthma, arthritis, cancer, and gastrointestinal issues. It has also been shown to reduce edema (swelling) from brain tumors after patients underwent radiotherapy [Kirste, 2011]. “RESULTS: Compared with baseline and if measured immediately after the end of radiotherapy and BS/placebo treatment, a reduction of cerebral edema of >75% was found in 60% of patients receiving BS and in 26% of patients receiving placebo (P = .023). These findings may be based on an additional antitumor effect. There were no severe adverse events in either group.” [Kirste, 2011] According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology in just 8 years (from 2001-2009), the prevalence of asthma jumped from 20 million people to 25 million people. That trend only seems to be increasing and if we extrapolate the data to 2017 there will be 30 million people with asthma, which is almost 10% of the population. Commonly used drugs, like inhaled corticosteroids or oral steroids may be effective, but at what cost? Serious long-term health consequences such as osteoporosis, cataracts, behavioral and mood changes, plus immunosuppression, are just to name a few [Dahl, 2006]. One of the reasons asthma is difficult to treat is because it involves an inflammatory enzyme pathway called the 5-LOX (arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase). Through a series of biochemical reactions, this enzyme produces substances called leukotrienes from the oxidation of lipid substrates, predominantly from arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid [Safayhi, 2000]]. When leukotrienes are overly expressed, our immune system is excessively activated, and we enter a state of chronic inflammation, which can manifest as chronic diseases like asthma. One of the beautiful mechanisms by which Boswellia exhibits its benefits is through the prevention of degradation and oxidation to these fatty acids, thus reducing the inflammatory changes in the first place. Boswellia has also proven to be efficacious in other chronic illnesses like inflammatory bowel diseases. Collagenous colitis, which falls under the IBD umbrella, is characterized by chronic diarrhea and is typically treated with a polypharmacy approach. In a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical study, B. serrata extract (BSE) was found to be superior in remission rates (63.6%) versus placebo (26.7%) after a six-week treatment [Madisch, 2007]. In a clinical study on chronic colitis, the remission rates were thirty percent higher in the Boswellia group (14 out of 20 patients) versus the anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical drug sulfasalazine (4 out of 10 patients) [Gupta, 2001]. In a clinical study on breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, a Boswellia cream was found to significantly reduce the skin-damaging side effects [Togni, 2015]. Radiotherapy can cause extreme irritation, inflammation, itching, pain, and redness, which can severely alter a patient’s quality of life [Shaitelman, 2015]. Managing these disruptive side effects is typically done with steroids to reduce the immune response, but why risk the consequences when Boswellia is a much safer alternative? While Boswellia extract may be a formidable force, so too are the volatile oils (essential oils) derived from the gummy resin. There are four main species of Boswellia There are four main species of Boswellia from which high-quality frankincense oils are extracted: B. sacra, B. carteri, B. frereana, and B. serrata. While the chemical constituents may vary by species, in general, frankincense oil contains beneficial terpene compounds (limonene, alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, camphene, myrcene) [Woolley, 2012]. Human data may currently be limited on essential oil applications, but animal and cellular studies have elucidated some of the mechanisms responsible for these anti-cancer properties. Frankincense oil has demonstrated cytotoxic, apoptotic, and anti-proliferative properties against various cancer cell lines, including pancreatic cancer (which generally has an overall survival rate in humans of less than five years) [Ni, 2012]. But what else can this natural plant compound do?  Claims for the health-promoting benefits of resveratrol have been coming thick and fast, with researchers crediting it with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anticancer effects.  In fact, in a study published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation, scientists noted that resveratrol could protect brain cells in an unexpected way – by stimulating the destruction of specific proteins. Let’s explore the scientific research on this intriguing polyphenol. Benefits of Resveratrol May Include Hope for Treating Alzheimer’s Disease Resveratrol is classified as a phytoalexin, a sort of natural antibiotic that protects plants from fungal infection, blight, and ultraviolet radiation.  Not unreasonably, scientists hope that resveratrol can extend its same protective benefits to human health. What is known is that resveratrol has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity that can cause it to reduce oxidative stress.  But, this is not the only gift to health in resveratrol’s “bag of tricks.” According to David Sinclair, AO, PhD, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, resveratrol induces autophagy – a type of cellular defense that targets old, damaged proteins for destruction and recycling.  The study referenced by Dr. Sinclair, revealingly titled “Resveratrol regulates neuro-inflammation and induces adaptive immunity in Alzheimer’s disease,” also shows that resveratrol supplementation reduced cognitive and functional decline in Alzheimer’s patients. Earlier research supports these encouraging findings.  In a 2018 study published in Biomedicine, researchers credited resveratrol with neuroprotective effects that could cause it to potentially act against Alzheimer’s, Huntingdon’s, and Parkinson’s diseases. The team reported that resveratrol promotes the clearance of beta-amyloid peptides – meaning that it may help reduce the deposit of harmful beta-amyloid plaques in the brain.  It also reduces neuronal apoptosis – in other words, it prevents the death of brain cells.  Resveratrol also offers neuroprotection to healthy individuals, so “topping up” on this beneficial compound may help protect cognitive function into old age. Resveratrol Supports Joint Health and Reduces Arthritic Inflammation Scientists have long been intrigued by the potential of resveratrol to ease inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA).  While preliminary animal studies showed that resveratrol could suppress arthritic inflammation, human trials were clearly needed.  In 2018, one took place. In a controlled study published in Clinical Rheumatology, researchers set out to study the therapeutic benefits of resveratrol for patients suffering from varying degrees of RA.  One group received one gram of supplemental resveratrol – along with conventional treatment – a day for three months, while another group received only conventional treatment.  The investigators found that the resveratrol group experienced less swelling and tenderness in joints and also had lowered levels of pro-inflammatory substances, including the “usual suspects” such as C-reactive protein, matrix metalloproteinase-3, necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-6. Boost Dietary Resveratrol With Tasty, Succulent Grapes and Berries You can ramp up your levels of dietary resveratrol by eating healthy amounts of grapes, blueberries, and pomegranates.  Of course, opt for organic produce whenever possible. While red grapes are commonly believed to contain more resveratrol than green grapes, the American Institute for Cancer Research reports that the amount of resveratrol in grapes (which, by the way, is found mainly in the skins) is more dependent on growing conditions than on the color or type of grape.  (When it comes to wine made from grapes, however, red wine contains more than white wine – as grape skins are used in making it). While red wine is an excellent source of resveratrol, health experts point out that alcohol can increase the risk of several common cancers – so its consumption should be sharply limited.  Grapes and berries, on the other hand, are a safe non-alcoholic source of resveratrol.  Rich in beneficial dietary fiber, these fruits also contain anthocyanins, natural plant pigments with the ability to promote overall health. By the way, other benefits of resveratrol include protecting the heart and supporting pulmonary function.  It has also been shown in cell studies to target cancer cells and act against tumors – without harming healthy cells. How Much Resveratrol Is Right for Me? Multiple clinical trials have used resveratrol up to 5 grams a day with no toxic side effects.  However, in some studies, amounts of over 2.5 grams a day caused side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.  There has also been a paradoxical finding concerning resveratrol, with some studies suggesting that resveratrol can sometimes behave more like a pro-oxidant than an antioxidant – even causing DNA damage and oxidative stress. Researchers speculated that this phenomenon seems related to the amount consumed – and perhaps to the individual’s age – with more research clearly needed.  Before supplementing with resveratrol, consult your integrative doctor to find the safest and most beneficial amount for you. Let’s see what the research reveals. Capsaicin in Chili Peppers Linked to Lower Risk of Heart Disease, Cancer, and Death From All Causes The scientific review, which involved 570,000 people in four different countries and three different continents, was conducted by researchers at the renowned Cleveland Clinic.  The team found that people who regularly ate capsaicin-rich chili peppers enjoyed a significant 23 percent lower risk of dying from cancer. Dietary intake of chili peppers also lowered the risk of heart disease by an eye-opening 26 percent – and was associated with a 25 percent reduction in risk of dying from any cause.  The findings appeared to startle the scientists.  “We were surprised to find that … regular consumption of chili pepper was associated with an overall risk reduction of all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and cancer mortality,” reported lead author Bo Xu, M.D., a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute.  Dr. Xu called for further research to confirm these promising preliminary findings. Researchers already credit chili peppers with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antiobesity, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic effects.  Natural healers have long endorsed these spicy delicacies for their impressive list of benefits, which may include easing migraines, inhibiting fungal infections, fighting viruses, improving cognitive function, reducingjoint pain, improving vision, and alleviating ulcers. Lung Cancer Cell Study: Capsaicin Stopped Cancer Cells in Their Tracks Other preliminary research has been encouraging as well.  A new test-tube study shows that capsaicin interferes with lung cancer metastasis (the ability of cancer to spread).  This is welcome news to oncological researchers – as one of the reasons lung cancer is so difficult to treat is that it moves to secondary locations such as the brain, liver, and bones. When scientists tested capsaicin in human non-small cell lung cancer cells, they discovered that the compound stopped cancer cell invasion, the first stage of metastasis.  The team reported that capsaicin blocks a specific protein needed to regulate the proliferation survival and mobility of cancer cells. In addition, the scientists found that mice fed a capsaicin-enriched diet displayed far lower amounts of metastatic cancer cells in their lungs (after being fed a cancer-promoting diet) than mice that had not received capsaicin. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Liji Thomas, MD via News-Medical &#8211; With new variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerging, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is far from over. While the global vaccine rollout has moved at an impressive speed, the search for new safe, effective, and targeted therapies is still on. Now, a new study in Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy reviews the potential for curcumin, a natural alkaloid derived from turmeric, and nanosystems to treat COVID-19. The Need for Therapeutics Though vaccines have been approved for emergency use, their efficacy against some of the new variants has been questioned. Moreover, vaccination coverage of at least 70% of the population in all the countries of the world is likely to take a long time, considering the current pace of vaccination, the shortfall in vaccine production, and logistical challenges. The world will still need effective and safe drugs, therefore, to intervene in serious illness caused by this virus. The current review focuses on the individual and synergistic activity of curcumin and nanostructures against the virus. Curcumin Curcumin is a polyphenolic compound isolated from the rhizome of the turmeric plant, Curcuma longa. It makes up the major curcuminoid in this plant, at 77% of the total, while the minor compound curcumin II makes up 17%, and curcumin III comprises 3%. Curcumin has been characterized and studied thoroughly, as a natural molecule with medicinal properties. Its tolerability and safety have been well documented, with a maximum dose of 12 g/day. Its uses have been described as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant, as well as antiviral. Curcumin has been suggested as a molecule with the potential to heal pulmonary edema and other injurious processes that lead to lung fibrosis following COVID-19. Curcumin Inhibits Viral Enzymes This is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit the virus itself, as well as to modulate inflammatory pathways. It regulates viral transcription and regulation, binds with high potency to the viral main protease (Mpro) enzyme that is key to replication and inhibits viral attachment and entry into the host cell. It may also disrupt viral structures. Its range of antiviral targets includes the hepatitis C virus, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the Epstein-Barr virus and the influenza A virus. It has been reported to inhibit the 3C-like protease (3CLpro) more effectively than other natural products, including quercetin, or drugs like chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. This could allow the reduction of viral loads within the human cell much more rapidly than other less inhibitory drugs, and thus prevent disease progression to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It also inhibits papain-like protease (PLpro) with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 5.7 µM that surpasses quercetin and other natural products. Curcumin Inhibits Host Cell Receptor The virus attaches to the human host target cell receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Modeling studies have shown that curcumin inhibits this virus-receptor interaction in two ways, by inhibiting both the spike protein and the ACE2 receptor. However, curcumin has low bioavailability, because it does not dissolve well in water and is unstable in aqueous media, especially at higher pH. When orally administered, it undergoes rapid metabolism by the gut and the liver. This obstacle may be overcome by using nanosystems. Many different nanostructured carriers may be used for this purpose, such as nanoemulsions, microemulsions, nanogels, micelles, nanoparticles and liposomes. Such carriers prevent the metabolic breakdown of the curcumin, increases its solubility and help it move through biological membranes. Three or more nanostructure-based curcumin products are already commercially available, but few studies have examined their efficacy against COVID-19 in vivo. These showed the ability of the formulations to modulate immune responses and to reduce the symptoms of the disease, and perhaps hasten recovery. Nanoparticle Advantages Nanoparticles (NPs) are one category of nanostructures that can be functionalized with ease, and have a wide potential range of materials and structures. This could allow them to be designed for specific viral targets within and outside the host cell. The addition of functional groups on the surface of the nanoparticles, such as antibodies, heparin and sugars, can enlarge the range of activity of the nanoparticle. Independent NP Mechanisms of Antiviral Activity NPs act in many ways, such as inactivation of the viral particle, inhibition of viral attachment and entry, and preventing viral replication. Depending on the functional group and the type of NP used, they can alter the viral capsid structure and thus reduce the viral load. By interacting with the SARS-CoV-2 spike, they can inactivate the virus, as shown earlier with metallic NPs, both preventing spike-ACE2 binding, and viral internalization. The occurrence of electrostatic interactions between charged NPs and the virus abolishes the effective charge on the latter, causing viral aggregation. With viral particles within the cell, the NPs can engage the viral RNA and prevent replication, followed by viral propagation to neighboring cells. Combined Formulations Thus, curcumin may inhibit viral targets, while the NPs may enhance the blockade on virus entry or use other inactivation mechanisms, depending on the functional group. Earlier studies show that silver NPs loaded with curcumin led to increased antiviral activity compared to either curcumin or silver NPs in isolation, with reduction of cell-cell fusion and syncytium formation. Curcumin-carbon dots are another option found to be effective in inhibiting entry by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, again a coronavirus. Implications and Future Directions These findings indicate the potential for the investigation of both curcumin and nanosystems for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2. Further studies are needed to validate the anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of both these molecules, and their efficiency and synergism in vitro and in vivo, followed by clinical trials.
