Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 – Perhaps you’ve heard people joke about having “senior moments,” those temporary lapses of memory that can leave you searching for a word — or a lost set of car keys. Perhaps you’ve even had a few yourself. Is this a sign of poor brain health? Unless they occur so frequently that they interfere with daily life, these little lapses are probably just a sign of normal age-related memory loss – and of the inevitable fact that your brain is getting smaller every year. Loss of brain mass can threaten cognition, memory, mood – even life itself Brain shrinkage, or loss of volume in the brain, is a normal part of aging. However, abnormally pronounced brain shrinkage puts you at risk for cognitive and movement disorders – and even stroke or premature death. Research shows that people with smaller brain volumes have a 96 percent increase in their risk of stroke – as well as a 58 percent increase in risk of death from all causes. Cardiovascular disease can be a major contributor to brain shrinkage. In one study, patients with coronary artery disease were found to have significantly smaller amounts of gray matter – with worse performances on cognitive tests. Diabetes, sleep disorders, stress, and obesity can all accelerate brain shrinkage as well. Lifestyle factors, such as a toxic diet, a lack of physical activity, smoking, and excessive drinking, can also speed the process. Neuroscientists say brain shrinkage can be slowed significantly with lifestyle changes. In addition to following a healthy diet and getting active, you can protect your brain by supplementing with the following four nutrients. Combine three different B-complex vitamins for brain health B-complex vitamins help to regulate homocysteine, an amino acid associated with heart disease. High levels of homocysteine cause brain shrinkage and dementia – especially when the body is deficient in B vitamins. Doctors say it’s important for aging people to maintain optimal B vitamin levels, especially those with high homocysteine levels. Three of the B-complex vitamins – vitamin B-12, vitamin B-9, and vitamin B-6 – are especially helpful in retaining brain volume. Vitamin B-12, or cobalamin, is found in fish, meat, and dairy. It is needed by the body to metabolize fatty acids, an important component of brain cells. People with B-12 deficiencies experience shrinkage at a rate that is 5 times faster than that of people with higher levels. Vitamin B-9, known as folate, occurs naturally in leafy vegetables, legumes, fruits, and organ meats such as beef liver. In one study, people with higher folate levels experienced slower rates of brain atrophy – as well as a longer period of time progressing from mild cognitive impairment to full-blown dementia. Vitamin B-6, or pyridoxine, is important in the production of neurotransmitters and the absorption of vitamin B-12. It occurs naturally in meat, fish, dairy, lentils, and brown rice. In a controlled trial published in the scientific journal PLoS One, adults over 70 with mild cognitive impairment were given 800 mcg of folate, 500 mcg of vitamin B-12, and 20 mg of vitamin B-6 daily for two years and experienced brain shrinkage at a rate of 30 percent slower than the control group. For participants with elevated homocysteine at the beginning of the study, results were even more dramatic — they slowed their brain shrinkage rate by 53 percent. Are high-fat diets bad for the brain? Healthy fats – such as the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils and nut oils – are a major part of brain cell membranes, and optimal levels can play a key role in protecting your brain. Higher levels of the omega-3 components known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are associated with larger brain volumes. When DHA and EPA levels drop, age-related cognitive deficits worsen. Major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder are both associated with abnormal distributions in the brain of fatty acids. People with Alzheimer’s disease also show low levels of fatty acids. Omega-3s protect against over-excitation – a primary cause of age-related brain cell damage – while decreasing inflammation and protecting against damage from stress. Pomegranate juice sharpens memory and improves cognition Pomegranates are rich in anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective plant-based compounds called polyphenols. This flavorful juice can help reduce overall fat content in obese people, help regulate blood sugar, and fight inflammation – “win/win” scenarios in the fight against brain shrinkage. And researchers have found that a mere 8 ounces of pomegranate juice a day can improve cognition and memory. Compound from grapes and berries may enlarge memory center Resveratrol is a phenol in red grapes, red wine, and darkly pigmented fruits such as blueberries. Studies showed that resveratrol increased volume in the hippocampus – the part of the brain associated with memory. It also helped protect against oxidative damage that leads to brain cell death and reduced injury to brain endothelial cells with high-fat diets. In a 2014 study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, adults who were overweight but otherwise healthy were given 200 mg of resveratrol daily for 26 weeks. Researchers found that resveratrol improved connections between the hippocampus and frontal sections of the brain and served to increase memory performance. They noted resveratrol’s potential as a novel strategy to maintain brain health during aging. As baby boomers round the corner into advanced age, avoiding loss of brain volume becomes a must for optimal health. Never underestimate the power of good (organic) nutrition and healthy lifestyle changes.

Al Sears, MD, CNS – Heart disease continues to be the biggest killer in America for one simple reason: The health advice we’re told to follow is just plain wrong. Giving up meat and fat, jogging, and taking a handful of medications will not cure your heart disease. But there is a cutting-edge, FDA-approved natural therapy that I call a game-changer for your heart… I’m talking about enhanced external counter pulsation, or EECP. Most cardiologists continue to ignore this treatment because it doesn’t fit the traditional image of what they do. They consider heart disease a “plumbing” problem. And the solution is to simply fix the blockages. But if that were true, why do heart attacks happen after these blockages have been cleared or bypassed? The real causes of heart disease are damaged blood vessels that inhibit blood flow and inflammation. That’s where this life-saving therapy comes in. Multiple studies reveal that EECP is the safest and most effective reliever of angina chest pain available. It has been shown to have huge benefits for patients with coronary artery disease and heart failure. It increases blood flow to the heart, strengthens circulation, and provides a proven way to treat heart disease with fewer drugs and without bypass surgeries, angioplasty procedures, or stents. And in many cases, it works better than the Big Pharma meds and risky, expensive surgeries that cardiologists continue to push. Although EECP was invented in the U.S. in the 1950s, it was left undeveloped as cardiology went down the more lucrative path of drugs and invasive surgeries. Instead, doctors overseas took up the challenge. They spent 20 years developing counter pulsation as a non-surgical way to treat coronary heart disease, by getting the timing of these devices just right. Counter pulsation means pumping blood during the heart’s rest phase. When the heart is at rest, the cuffs inflate. When the heart pumps, the cuffs deflate. The cuffs compress the blood vessels in your lower limbs and push blood toward the heart. Each wave of increased blood flow is timed to arrive at your heart the moment the organ relaxes. When your heart pumps again, pressure is released. This essentially acts as a passive form of vigorous exercise, boosting blood flow, and pushing oxygen-rich blood throughout your body more strongly than normal. More than 100 studies along with multiple clinical trials prove the effectiveness of EECP. In one large study, researchers followed more than 5,000 patients worldwide. They discovered that 83% of patients had vastly improved blood flow after EECP and 73% reported a significant reduction in the severity of angina symptoms.1 Yet in America, almost all coronary artery disease patients are prescribed Big Pharma meds instead. Regrow Brand-New Blood Vessels Perhaps the most remarkable benefit of EECP is its ability to strengthen and repair damaged blood vessels and regrow new ones, creating new pathways in and around the heart – without any surgical grafting. That is why EECP is hailed as a “natural bypass.”2 Blocked Coronary Arteries You see, when coronary arteries become blocked with plaque, obstructing blood flow, it causes chest pain and possibly a heart attack. Some people can naturally form new blood vessels that serve to bypass these obstructions. Unfortunately, not everyone can. And despite the conventional opinion that nothing can be done, EECP has worked wonders for these patients. Study involving 1,400 patients In a study involving 1,400 patients with refractory angina, 75% had half as many angina attacks after EECP. And in a three-year follow-up, 16% had no angina at all.3 Other studies show that EECP triggers the production of an important hormone called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This allows blood to bypass the blocked arteries by creating new ones.4 The effects of EECP last about five years.5 If you are interested in trying EECP to increase blood flow and protect your heart, please call the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine at 561-784-7852. 2 More Ways To Protect Your Arteries EECP is a miracle cure for unclogging arteries. But if you can’t get to my clinic, there are nutrients you can supplement with at home. Here are a couple to try today: 1. Use the B vitamin that’s proven to protect your heart. You probably know vitamin B9 better than folate or folic acid. Folate is the nutrient found in food, while folic acid is the supplement form.Folic acid lowers levels of toxic substances that irritate the heart’s lining. This relaxes your blood vessels and keeps them flexible. Fewer irritations equate to normalized pulse pressure and a reduction in stroke and heart attack. Simply put… When folate is high your risk of heart attack drops by up to 50%.6 Natural sources of folate are dark green vegetables as well as beef, lamb, chicken liver, and eggs. But your body only absorbs half the folate you get from food. I recommend supplementing with 800 mcg a day. 2. Try heart-saving vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 scrubs your arteries clear of the plaque that clogs blood vessels. In a landmark, Dutch trial researchers followed 4,800 people. Results revealed that high levels of vitamin K2 lowered the risk of coronary artery disease by 57%. It lowered calcium buildup in the arteries by 52%. And it slashed the risk of death from any cause by 26%.7 You can get vitamin K2 directly from foods. Our ancestors got plenty from eating organ meats like liver. Other rich sources are meat, full-fat milk, cottage cheese, butter, and cheese. But these foods MUST come from grass-fed animals. You can also supplement. Look for vitamin K2 in the form of “menaquinone-7.” It’s much more bioactive than other forms. Take 45 to 90 mcg a day with a meal to improve absorption.

Aarhus University via EurekAlert! – A new study reveals the link between gut bacteria and the effectiveness of vitamin B1 treatment for chronic disease in patients with intestinal inflammation. Fatigue is a common and often debilitating companion for people with inflammatory bowel conditions. Now, a new Danish study provides insight into why vitamin B1 – also known as thiamine – helps some patients regain their energy, while others do not experience the same effect. The study shows, among other things, that patients’ response to vitamin B1 depends on gut bacteria, with researchers focusing particularly on a specific “good bug” that seems to play a crucial role. “We know that about half of the fatigued patients benefit from treatment with vitamin B1, but we haven’t been able to find anything that distinguishes those who had an effect from those who did not. Now we know that it’s especially the bacterium Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (FP) that is the key,” says Professor and Consultant Christian Lodberg Hvas, who is the lead author of the study. Surprising findings FP is a bacterium that many studies have identified as having beneficial properties or at least being frequently found in people with a healthy gut. The researchers were surprised to find that the presence of a single key bacterium determines whether patients with chronic fatigue experience a good effect from thiamine treatment. “We thought we were looking for a ‘fatigue microbiome,’ a composition of gut bacteria that is particularly seen in patients with chronic fatigue. But we didn’t find that. Instead, we found that the microbiome of the fatigued largely resembles the microbiome of those who are not fatigued,” explains Christian Lodberg Hvas. Still a mystery The study involved 40 patients with inflammatory bowel disease and chronic fatigue. Each patient received both vitamin B1 and a placebo in two periods of four weeks with a break in between. This allowed the researchers to see if the vitamin treatment had an effect on fatigue. At the same time, the researchers examined the patients’ gut bacteria to see if there was a correlation between specific bacteria and the effect of the treatment. Although the researchers found a clear connection between FP and the patients’ response to the treatment, it remains a mystery why this is the case. “The bacterium is largely present in people with good health and only present in low numbers in people with chronic diseases. We don’t know if it’s just a marker for health or if it’s part of the reason why healthy people are indeed healthy,” explains Christian Lodberg Hvas. “But the more studies that point to a beneficial effect of FP, the more it suggests that the bacterium is involved as a cause of health and not just as a bystander,” he adds. A cure for many with unexplained fatigue For some patients, fatigue can be explained by a lack of iron, vitamin D, or low thyroid function. These are all conditions that are easy to treat. But a large group of patients with inflammatory bowel disease remains with unexplained fatigue. “We really want to help them, and although we don’t have an explanation, we now have a cure – for those who have many FP in their gut,” says Christian Lodberg Hvas. “Therefore, we now recommend high-dose vitamin B1 treatment to all our patients where we don’t find any obvious explanation for chronic fatigue. We know that it only works for half, but it’s still a good chance, and a month’s treatment is cheap,” he adds. The clear recommendation also comes because the treatment has proven to be completely free of side effects. “However, one must accept that thiamine smells and tastes peculiar – so your hands, urine, and sweat will smell like vitamin pills with the very high dose you’re taking,” says Christian Lodberg Hvas.

Sara Middleton via NaturalHealth365 – While certain types of mushrooms can be toxic or even deadly, the mushrooms you’ll find in the grocery store are safe and healthy to eat. In fact, the health benefits of mushrooms appear to impact everything from cognition to gut health. Mushrooms are even known as one of the few plant sources of vitamin D, a critical nutrient that about 1 billion people worldwide are estimated to be deficient in. In other words: these versatile fungi could be a great addition to your weekly meal plan if you don’t eat them yet. Eating Just 2 Servings of Mushrooms Per Week Could Do Wonders for Brain Function Most varieties of mushrooms contain a range of nutrients, including vitamin D, vitamin B, copper, potassium, selenium, and phosphorus. We’re still learning about why they boost health, but human studies have so far revealed some promising effects. According to Harvard Medical School, one 2019 study found that consuming just two servings of mushrooms per week (1 serving is about 3/4 cup cooked) was associated with a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment in older adults compared to eating fewer than 1 serving per week. Scientists attribute their excellent brain-protective benefits to their antioxidant capacity. Additional research has found that mushrooms, which contain natural prebiotic compounds, may stimulate the growth of healthy gut bacteria and potentially support healthy digestion. Another great thing about mushrooms is that you generally have a wide variety to choose! Popular types of mushrooms include: Shiitake Portobello Crimini Button Oyster Beech Maitake Enoki Read this Important Note About Mushrooms as a Vitamin D Source We mentioned earlier that mushrooms are one of the only plant sources of vitamin D, which (in addition to sunshine) makes them a popular choice for vegans or anyone interested in non-animal sources of this important vitamin. And while this is true, there are a few important things to keep in mind so you can ensure you’re getting the most out of this nutritious fungi: According to the United States Department of Agriculture, mushrooms technically contain a compound called ergosterol that is a precursor to vitamin D. This means that it gets broken down in the body and converted into vitamin D2. But, vitamin “D2” is not the ideal form for humans. Especially if you’re deficient in vitamin D … you’ll want to get vitamin “D3.” Many conventionally grown fungi are actually grown in dark environments, which dramatically lowers their vitamin D content (unfortunately). Some more health-conscious producers are now exposing their mushroom crops to ultraviolet light as a way to improve the fungi’s nutritional profile. Look for these higher-quality varieties in health food stores or online. According to Harvard Medical School, dried mushrooms stored in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months contain about 600 IU of vitamin D2 per 3.5-ounce serving. Bottom line: If you’re deficient in vitamin D (with a blood test score of below 30) … then, you’ll most likely need to supplement with vitamin D3 to the tune of 5,000 to 8,000 IU or more until your levels reach between 50 and 80 ng/ml. In addition, you may want to consider taking your vitamin D3 with cofactors like, vitamin K2, magnesium, zinc and boron to help with proper absorption. Before You Eat Mushrooms … Here Are Two Final Tips: Don’t wash or clean mushrooms until you’re prepared to use them (ideally within a week of purchasing), and try storing them in a fridge in an open brown paper bag to help absorb excess moisture and prevent spoilage.
