					<description><![CDATA[<p>Michael Greger M.D. FACLM via Nutrition Facts &#8211; Acne can be triggered in one in ten people who get vitamin B12 injections. “Acne is a disease unique to humans.” Why do we even get it? Well, think about the distribution of those greasy sebaceous glands. They’re “on the face, chest and back; these are exactly the same structures that pose the greatest obstruction during childbirth…Having extra lubrication at these sites would help make the baby more slippery for birth conferring a selective advantage to successful delivery.” Perhaps, but what triggers them to become inflamed into pimples later in life? “In westernized societies, acne vulgaris is a nearly universal skin disease afflicting 79% to 95%” of teens. Not even a single case could be found in some populations where more “traditional” diets are eaten (i.e., minimally processed, high-carb, low-fat diets). “Nutrition counseling” has been suggested “as a first-line or adjunctive therapy…for individuals with mild to moderate acne.” It looks like high glycemic foods and dairy products are “exacerbating factors,” so we’re talking about sugar, soda, refined junky carbohydrates, white flour, breakfast cereal, and dairy products, like milk, cheese, yogurt, and whey, as well as saturated and trans fats, which are concentrated in meat, dairy, junk, and fast food. You can see a table detailing this below and at 1:21 in my video Do Vitamin B12 Supplements Cause Acne?. “Acne patients should be encouraged to discontinue any whey protein supplements they might be taking,” for example. “The relationship between milk and acne severity may be explained by the presence in dairy of normal reproductive [sex] steroid hormones or the enhanced production of polypeptide [growth] hormones such as IGF-1…” What if you gave up dairy a month ago and there’s still no change? “It should be noted that changes in acne due to any pharmaceutical treatment or dietary changes are likely to take at least 10 to 12 weeks,” so you have to stick with it. “Acne patients,” not surprisingly, “were more than twice as likely to have a non-vegan diet compared with controls,” but the difference did not reach statistical significance. Were the vegans eating a lot of vegan junk? Maybe, but what about the paper entitled, “Vitamin B-12 Induced Acne”? Mammalian herbivores, including nonhuman primates like gorillas, and our fellow great apes, get all the B12 they need by practicing coprophagy, the eating of feces, but my preference would be to take B12 supplements. And you don’t have to worry about getting too much because it’s been reported that “there are no reports of adverse effects associated with excess B12 intake”—but that’s not true. First described back in the 1950s, acne erupts in about one in ten people within days or even hours of getting an injection of vitamin B12, which then disappears rapidly when injection “treatment is discontinued.” At the time, we had no idea what the mechanism might be, and the problem remained unsolved until just a few years ago when we finally figured it out: Vitamin B12 modulates the gene expression of the skin bacteria that cause acne. Researchers swabbed the skin of ten people before and after being injected with vitamin B12. As you can see below and at 3:20 in my video, it turns out that the level of B12 on our skin is proportional to the level in our blood, so, after a B12 injection, the bacteria on our skin have to make less of their own B12. As a result, the acne bacteria could concentrate instead on using their cellular machinery to churn out more compounds to attack our face and “induce inflammation in acne.” Indeed, as you can see here and at 3:53 in my video, without excess B12 on the skin (with B12 shown in green), the bacteria have to make most of it on their own at the expense of porphyrins (shown in red), which can trigger acne inflammation. When there is a lot of B12 floating around, the bacteria don’t have to waste resources and, instead, can focus on trying to pimple you up. So, what do you do? We know that individuals on plant-based diets have to take supplemental B12, but we don’t have to get injections. Vitamin B12-related acne tends to occur only “in dosages in excess of 5 to 10 mg per week.” That’s 5,000 to 10,000 micrograms a week, which is well in excess of the 50 micrograms a day or, alternately, the 2,000-microgram single weekly dose that I recommend. The only time you should be taking 5,000 to 10,000 micrograms a week is if you are treating B12 deficiency. If you remember from my previous video, B12 deficiency is treated with 1,000 micrograms a day for a month or more, as shown below and at 4:35 in my video, and that could potentially trigger acne. For example, a vegan woman who hadn’t been taking B12 developed a deficiency and had to be treated with such high doses of the vitamin that her face erupted in acne, as you can see at 4:49 in my video. All the more reason not to become B12-deficient in the first place. But, even if you do get B12 injections, the likelihood of it triggering acne may only be about one in ten. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Stephanie Woods via NaturalHealth365 &#8211; As the COVID-19 virus swept the globe, people got sick, then they got better, and then … they started losing their hair.  That was a delayed aftereffect that no one saw coming.  Stress levels were already running high with the lockdowns, illness, crazy mandates, medications, rushed vaxxes, and unrelenting controversy surrounding the pandemic.  Add to that, the stress on the body from the virus itself, and you have a recipe for serious stress-related responses. A study published in the Irish Journal of Medical Science in late August 2021 found a distinct link between acute telogen effluvium – a form of temporary hair loss – and COVID-19.  Researchers wanted to examine the virus’s possible effects on the human hair growth cycle and establish a relationship between this condition and COVID. Post COVID-19 Infection Associated with Excessive Hair Loss, According to New Study The insanity of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken over our lives.  Reports of overcrowded hospitals, deaths, job losses, closed businesses, and resource shortages have stressed the already fearful masses.  Mainstream media did a fantastic job keeping the fear-mongering going, scaring people with news about newer variants, the ever-increasing death toll, etc. So, when reports started coming in about people losing their hair months after having COVID, it was a symptom that no one saw coming. Authors Confirm Relationship Between COVID-19 Infection and Telogen Effluvium Researchers assembled 39 patients ranging from 22 to 67 years old.  All of the patients had been diagnosed with COVID.  Most only had mild and moderate symptoms, and none required hospitalization during their illness. Two to three months after the illness, all patients in the trial began to experience excessive hair loss.  In the study, the authors confirmed the link between COVID-19 infection and acute telogen effluvium.  Furthermore, the drugs used to treat the virus were excluded as a cause of hair loss. Therefore, the researchers believe it is specifically due to the so-called virus itself.  But, now, let’s shift our focus to helping those in need. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Sally Robertson, B.Sc. via News-Medical &#8211; Researchers in the UK and Spain have used a novel drug screening approach to identify compounds that could serve as effective antivirals against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) – the agent that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The team used a quantum-inspired device in combination with a more traditional fingerprinting method to search for drugs that are similar to remdesivir, the only antiviral against SARS-CoV-2 that is currently approved for human use. “The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need to identify new therapeutics at pace, including through drug repurposing,” says the team from Fujitsu Technology Solutions in Madrid and King’s College Hospital in London. While both models predicted the antiviral drug GS-6620 as the top compound, the quantum-based model predicted the antiviral BMS-986094 as second best. Both of these compounds were initially developed to treat the hepatitis C virus. The more traditional Tanimoto model also predicted different forms of vitamin B12 as potential antiviral candidates. In vitro analyses revealed that BMS-986094 and the different types of B12 were effective at inhibiting the replication of SARS-CoV-2 variants. “While BMS-986094 can cause secondary effects in humans as established by phase II trials, these findings suggest that vitamin B12 deserves consideration as a SARS-CoV-2 antiviral, particularly given its extended use and lack of toxicity in humans, and its availability and affordability,” writes Rocio Martinez-Nunez and colleagues. “Our data illustrate the power of employing quantum-inspired computing for drug repurposing,” they add. A pre-print version of the research paper is available on the bioRxiv* server while the article undergoes peer review. Treatments That Can Be Rapidly Deployed Are Urgently Required Since the COVID-19 outbreak first began in late December 2019, intense research and development efforts have led to the emergency use authorization and mass roll-out of several effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. “However, the ongoing emergence of new variants, different immunization rates, supply chain issues, as well as the presence of smaller or larger outbreaks underlie the requirement for urgent treatments that can be rapidly deployed,” says Martinez-Nunez and colleagues. Drug repurposing refers to the process by which approved drugs are used to treat a disease they were not initially designed to treat. Virtual screening has become essential in the early stages of drug discovery, but the process is typically time-consuming since it generally relies on measuring chemical similarities between molecules. Accordingly, most well-known methods use 2D molecular fingerprints to include structural information about molecules. However, these methods do not consider aspects of molecular structures such as 3D folding. Where Does Quantum-Inspired Computing Come in? The 3D information obtained from a given molecule can be encoded as a graph, say Martinez-Nunez and colleagues. “In order to calculate the similarity between molecules, a new graph that contains information regarding the two molecules is required, allowing for better and faster comparisons to solve an optimization problem known as the Maximum Independent Set (MIS) that extracts the similar parts of those two graphs,” explains the team. By employing quantum-inspired computing, mathematical models are able to manage this kind of information while shortening execution times by up to 60-fold. The Problem with Remdesivir Remdesivir is currently the only antiviral drug approved for use against SARS-CoV-2, while another compound called molnupiravir is also emerging as a potential candidate. However, both of these compounds are associated with multiple side effects, including nausea and hepatic impairment. They are also costly and therefore unaffordable in many countries and settings. “There is, therefore, an urgent need to identify novel antiviral compounds that exhibit low to no side effects and that are readily and economically available,” write the researchers. What Did the Researchers Do? The researchers employed a Quadratic Unbounded Binary Optimization (QUBO) model that runs on a quantum-inspired device to search for compounds similar to remdesivir. They modeled remdesivir as a graph and then screened the DrugBank database for compounds already approved for human use. The optimal parameters in the algorithm were established, and the MIS problem was resolved within the conflict graph generated. The team also employed a more traditional fingerprint method – the Tanimoto index – that runs on a regular laptop. What Did the Study Find? Both methods predicted several compounds that exhibited similarity to remdesivir, with GS-6620 predicted as the top compound by both models. The QUBO model predicted BMS-986094 as the second-best candidate and Tanimoto predicted several forms of cobamamide, also known as vitamin B12. Next, the team performed cultured cell assays to determine the SARS-CoV-2 inhibitory capabilities of the compounds. This revealed that BMS-986094, cobamamide, hydroxocobalamin, and methylcobalamin all proved effective at concentrations lying within ranges suitable for human use. Finally, the researchers showed that these compounds were effective at inhibiting the replication of a number of SARS-CoV-2 variants, including B.1.1.7 (also called Alpha), B.1.351 (Beta), and B.1.617.2 (Delta). What Did the Authors Conclude? Martinez-Nunez and colleagues say the data revealed novel compounds that could inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication, based on the QUBO model and the more traditional Tanimoto fingerprint. “BMS warrants further investigation, while vitamin B12 is readily available from multiple sources. It is affordable, can be self-administered by patients, is available worldwide, and displays low-to-no toxicity at high doses,” they write. “Our screening method can be employed in future searches for novel pharmacologic inhibitors, thus providing an approach for accelerating drug deployment,” concludes the team. *Important Notice bioRxiv publishes preliminary scientific reports that are not peer-reviewed and, therefore, should not be regarded as conclusive, guide clinical practice/health-related behavior, or treated as established information. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Damon Hines via NaturalHealth365 &#8211; Why is it that most of the world’s anchovies aren’t destined for the dinner plate but processed into fishmeal and oil for use in animal feeds, food additives, and fertilizers?  At best, anchovies have a mixed reputation in the U.S., where most consumers rather eat a tender filet of salmon, cod, or haddock, even if – as is the case with salmon – four-fifths of the fish consumed in the U.S. is farm-raised.  But here’s the thing about anchovies: the small, bite-sized fish are a superfood that can greatly impact human health and cognitive development. According to Shakuntala Thilsted, winner of the 2021 World Food Prize, anchovies can fight malnutrition, prevent stunting, and promote cognitive development in children.  They are good for pregnant women, as small fish have a shorter lifespan than large fish and have less chance of concentrating heavy metal contaminants.  Moreover, a 100g serving of anchovies can provide us with 19 grams of protein, 77 grams of calcium, 3 milligrams of iron, and plenty of omega-3s.  Anchovies are also a rich source of the B vitamins niacin, riboflavin, and vitamin B-12. Don’t Be Fishy About the Anchovy: It’s Time to Reconsider It as a Tiny Powerhouse of Nutrition Ask most Americans what they think of anchovies, and chances are they’ll wrinkle their noses.  Maybe … maybe they’ll consent to have some scattered on a Caesar Salad or atop a pizza.  Still, most hungry consumers have the same opinion as Ninja Turtle Michelangelo:  “Oh, and I want no anchovies.  And I mean, no anchovies.  You put anchovies on this thing, and you’re in big trouble, okay?!” Still, while the little fish are mostly maligned in the U.S., they’ve been happily devoured around the world for centuries.  The ancient Greeks prized the little fish, the Romans turned them into garum, and almost every Asian country has its own unique anchovy sauce. The Health Benefits Aren’t the Only Reason to Reconsider Anchovies Consuming less fish at the top of the food chain helps re-balance the marine ecosystem. According to a study by Villy Christensen of the University Of British Columbia’s Fisheries Center, populations of predator fish at the top of the food chain, such as cod, tuna, and groupers, have suffered huge declines, shrinking by around two-thirds in the past 100 years.  However, populations of “forage fish,” such as anchovy, sardines, and capelin, have more than doubled over the past century. Anchovy has a short life span and reproduces quickly and is, therefore, a more sustainable option than other fish. What’s the Most Nutritious Way to Eat Anchovies?  Cooking and eating the fish whole is the easiest way to prepare anchovies.  However, according to Shakuntala Thilsted, converting the fish into a fish powder with mortar and pestle is “extremely powerful because you are removing the moisture content and concentrating the nutrients by a factor of four.”  Making a fish chutney is also an option. Good anchovies are soft, creamy, sweet, and savory – a perfect expression of the fifth taste: unami.  It’s a small fish with big health benefits, and American consumers should reconsider adding it to their diet. Take an antibiotic. High cholesterol? Use a statin. In pain? Pop an opioid. Feeling blue? Try an antidepressant. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 74 percent of doctor’s visits end with a scribbled prescription. It’s so common, many of us never think to question modern healthcare’s singular focus on medication. As a result, these lab-created drugs have stealthily taken over our lives. The Kaiser Family Foundation recently reported that 50 percent of Americans ages 30 to 49 are currently taking prescription medication, as are 75 percent of those in their 50s, and nearly 90 percent of those age 65 and older. More shocking, a third of people in their 50s — and more than half of those 65 and older — take four or more prescription drugs regularly. Our culture has come to equate healing with drugs, so much so that many of us expect our doctors to give us medication, and we often feel disregarded or mistreated when we leave an appointment empty-handed. Antibiotics are a tragic example. If you’ve ever had a chronic cough, or your child has had an ear infection, chances are your doctor prescribed one of these bacteria-killing drugs — and you might have been grateful to receive it. But here’s the thing: We now know that these medications aren’t effective at treating chronic coughs, ear infections and many other common ailments for which they’re routinely prescribed. Worse, antibiotics can be far more dangerous than we’ve been led to believe. We’ve known for a long time that they wipe out billions of healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract — microbes that play a vital role in helping us digest food, fight inflammation, and maintain a healthy mood and strong immune system. But did you know that taking antibiotics repeatedly might actually increase your risk of cancer? An analysis of a large medical records database, published in the European Journal of Cancer, found that the more courses of antibiotics a patient took in the prior year, the greater their risk of esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, lung, prostate and breast cancers. Healthcare professionals in the United States write roughly 260 million prescriptions for antibiotics every year. Although the cancer risk from antibiotics is small, the drugs are jeopardizing millions of people’s health. As appalling, at least 30 percent of those millions of prescriptions are completely unnecessary, according to the CDC, because they’re prescribed for conditions that don’t respond to antibiotics. (I believe that closer to 90 percent are unnecessary, since our bodies are capable of fighting most bacterial infections on their own; and if you need extra help, a number of herbs are effective antimicrobials, with few, if any, side effects.) Those needless rounds of medication not only harm the health of people who take them, but they also contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of lethal microbes. At least two million people in the U.S. are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria every year, and 23,000 die because the bacteria have learned to outwit even our most powerful medications. Antibiotic resistance is one of the most urgent public health threats facing the world today. If you have a life-threatening infection, taking antibiotics makes sense. In all other instances, I agree with the sentiment of Francis Bacon, an early champion of the scientific revolution, who noted in the 16th century, “Sometimes the remedy is worse than the disease.” Antibiotics are the tip of the iceberg — and few people understand the true scope or seriousness of synthetic pills’ risks. You probably don’t know, for instance, that long-term use of most medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, can cause serious nutrient deficiencies. Proton pump inhibitors, which are routinely prescribed for acid reflux, limit the body’s ability to absorb vitamins B12 and C as well as iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and beta-carotene. They also raise your risk of dying from heart disease, chronic kidney disease and gastrointestinal cancer. Likewise, some diuretic drugs for high blood pressure deplete your body of calcium, magnesium, thiamin, zinc, potassium, folate and iron. These nutrients are absolutely essential for the healthy functioning of your brain, heart and muscles. And those widely used types of drugs are just two examples, among dozens, of pharmaceuticals that can cause dire nutritional deficiencies. Check out this chart on commonly prescribed medications and the dangerous nutrient deficiencies they can cause. I took an oath when I became a doctor, as all physicians do. That oath was “First do no harm.” But how can any doctor be true to that oath if we rely exclusively on pharmaceuticals? As Sir William Osler, a revered Canadian physician in the 1800s, said, “The person who takes medicine must recover twice; once from the disease and once from the medicine.” What I’ve shared is just a glimpse of the vast pharmaceutical-fueled tragedy that’s quietly unfolding across the country. But there’s a deeper truth that makes our dependence on pharmaceuticals even worse: For years, Western medicine has disregarded, ignored, maligned, and sometimes intentionally buried information about safer ancient alternatives. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Al Sears, MD, CNS &#8211; Recently, the drug company Biogen pulled out of two clinical trials for potential Alzheimer’s drugs. In total, that’s more than 200 failed attempts [at finding a workable treatment]. Without drugs to prescribe, doctors feel helpless. But what if a simple, non-drug therapy could ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s? Today, I’ll show you how a unique “light wave” therapy shows promise for Alzheimer’s disease. The 3 Hallmarks of Alzheimer’s Scientists have known for years that beta-amyloid deposits are abundant in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease. These deposits build up over time, blocking communication between nerve cells, eventually gumming them up, causing more confusion and memory loss. Recently, MIT researchers examined the brain waves of normal mice and mice with Alzheimer’s. The brains of mice with Alzheimer’s had irregular or “disrupted” gamma waves and acted differently than mice with normal gamma waves.1 Gamma waves are the fastest of the brain waves and used by the neurons to pass information quickly and easily. This is what helps us to quickly recall old memories while making new ones. The mice with disrupted gamma waves had clear signs of beta-amyloid deposit buildup due to their slow movement and responsiveness. After observing the differences between the two groups, the researchers came up with an idea… What if they could restore the disrupted gamma waves? Researchers experimented by using a flickering light that mimicked the gamma wave frequency. “It’s a pretty striking result…” the lead researcher said “…they were able to reduce, in the mouse at least, all three hallmarks of Alzheimer’s pathology.”2 The light therapy restored normal gamma waves and reduced beta-amyloid deposits. While most doctors aren’t using this technology yet, I will keep you posted in future Doctor’s House Calls as this story unfolds. In the meantime, you have other options. But it’s hard to get what you need from today’s food. I recommend supplementing with at least 1,000 mcg of B12 a day. But avoid taking pills or capsules. Only a small fraction gets absorbed through your gut. Sprays are much more effective at getting the nutrient into your blood and circulatory system.
