					<description><![CDATA[<p>Edit Lang via NaturalHealth365 &#8211; According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), approximately 4.6 percent of the U.S. population over  12 years old lives with hypothyroidism, with women far more likely to develop the condition than men.  Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, occurs when your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones.  This diminished thyroid function can potentially lead to devastating health consequences, such as weight gain, muscle weakness, pain, depression, plus much more. Although thyroid medications are the gold standard for managing hypothyroidism symptoms, they are certainly not the only way to nudge your thyroid gland to release more of its vital hormones.  A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition put two nutrients to the test to see if they can help improve thyroid function. Study Questions Effectiveness of Medications Used to Treat Underactive Thyroid If you live with low thyroid, you know how the condition progresses over time and symptoms worsen. Upon diagnosis, most doctors recommend patients to begin taking one of the many thyroid medications on the market, likely for the rest of their life.  This approach might sound reasonable if we did not consider the long list of possible side effects and severe long-term health consequences, such as breast cancer associated with thyroid medications.  In addition, scientists also raised questions about medication efficacy, as a whopping 40 percent of patients on thyroid medications continue to have abnormal TSH levels, according to the Colorado thyroid disease prevalence study. Such dismal results with commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals may partially explain why researchers looked at nutrients to boost thyroid hormone levels naturally. Supplementing with These Two Nutrients Can Increase Thyroid Hormone Levels In this 12-week study, researchers divided 68 obese women with underactive thyroid into four groups. Group 1 received 30 milligrams of zinc (as zinc gluconate) and 200 micrograms of selenium (as selenium yeast) Group 2 received 30 mg of zinc Group 3 received 200 micrograms of selenium Group 4 received a placebo At the end of the study period, researchers noted significant improvements in several areas.  First, participants in the zinc-selenium group saw a 9.2 percent increase in Free T3 hormone levels.  The zinc only group had an even more remarkable, 27 percent increase.  Second, Free T4 levels also went up by 12.4 percent among patients taking both zinc and selenium.  Finally, the ratio between Free T3 and Free T4 also improved by 23.8 percent. Researchers concluded that yes, indeed, supplementing with zinc or zinc and selenium has a beneficial effect on thyroid function. Discover the Various Ways Zinc and Selenium Affect Your Thyroid To better appreciate the above findings, let’s take a closer look at the connection between thyroid and zinc.  One of the most important functions of zinc is its role in the T4 to T3 conversion.  This process is also called the peripheral thyroid conversion, by which your body converts the inactive thyroid hormone T4 into the active hormone T3. Although zinc is not the only nutrient playing a role in this conversion, it is undeniably the most important of all.  Zinc deficiency impairs your body’s ability to convert T4 to T3 and may lead to low thyroid development. On the contrary, maintaining adequate zinc levels can help optimize your health in multiple ways. Selenium, an essential micronutrient for thyroid function, also boosts T4 to T3 conversion, protects the gland against damage, and plays a vital role in thyroid hormone synthesis.  Of all the organs, your thyroid contains the highest concentration of selenium in your body. Know This Before Supplementing With Zinc or Selenium Although avoiding deficiency in zinc and selenium is essential for optimum health, you should always consult with your healthcare professional before starting a new supplement regiment.  Taking high amounts (especially over 40 mg) of zinc for long periods can deplete copper stores in your body. If you have celiac disease or other digestive disorders, you may not be able to absorb zinc at all. Selenium requires similar precautions as it can be toxic at high amounts.  Experts have set the daily upper limits of selenium at 400 mcg.  Brazil nuts are a popular way to ensure you meet the recommended daily intake of selenium. Unfortunately, many adults don’t consume enough iodine-rich foods and, thus, suffer from an iodine deficiency. Therefore, many suffer a range of negative health consequences as a result, known as iodine deficiency disorders. Iodine is present throughout the body in just about every organ and tissue, needed by almost every bodily system to keep us alive and energized. For this reason, iodine deficiency poses many risks — an alarming thought considering that some sources suggest around 50 percent or more of the adult population in Western developed nations are at least somewhat iodine-deficient. That’s why eating iodine-rich foods is so vital. What Is Iodine? Iodine is an essential mineral that enters the body through iodine-rich foods, including certain salts (“iodized salt”), eggs, sea vegetables, fish, beans and other foods. It’s found naturally in mineral-rich soils and also ocean water. Iodine present in foods and iodized salt contains several chemical forms of iodine, including sodium and potassium salts, inorganic iodine (I2), iodate, and iodide. Iodine usually occurs as a salt and is called iodide when it does (not iodine). We rely on iodine to create thyroxine (T4 hormone) and triiodothyronine (T3), two of the main hormones produced by the thyroid that control numerous important functions. Iodide is absorbed in the stomach and enters the bloodstream, circulating to the thyroid gland, where it uses appropriate amounts for thyroid hormone synthesis. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>European Society of Endocrinology via EurekAlert &#8211; Patients with autoimmune inflammation of their thyroid may be at greater risk of developing anxiety, according to a study being presented at e-ECE 2020. The study found that people with anxiety may also have inflammation in their thyroid gland that can be reduced by taking the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, ibuprofen. These findings suggest that thyroid function may play an important role in the development of anxiety disorders and that thyroid inflammation should be investigated as an underlying factor in psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety. At present, up to 35% of the young population (25-60 years) in developed countries have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety can have a severe impact of people&#8217;s quality of life and ability to work and socialise, and anti-anxiety medication does not always have a lasting effect. Current examinations for anxiety disorders usually focus on dysfunction of the nervous system and do not take into account the role of the endocrine system. The thyroid gland produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) that are essential for regulating heart, muscle and digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance. Autoimmune inflammation in the thyroid occurs when our bodies wrongly produce antibodies that attack the gland and causes damage. Recent studies indicate that anxiety disorders can be associated with the dysfunction of the thyroid gland. Therefore, it is important to understand how this may contribute to anxiety, so that patients can be treated more effectively. Dr Juliya Onofriichuk from Kyiv City Clinical Hospital investigated thyroid function in 29 men (average age 33.9) and 27 women (average age 31.7) with diagnosed anxiety, who were experiencing panic attacks. Ultrasounds of their thyroid glands assessed thyroid function and levels of thyroid hormones were measured. The patients with anxiety showed signs of inflammation of their thyroid glands but their function was not affected, with thyroid hormone levels all within the normal range, although slightly elevated. They also tested positive for antibodies directed against the thyroid. Treatment for 14 days with ibuprofen and thyroxine reduced thyroid inflammation, normalised thyroid hormone levels and reduced their anxiety scores. &#8220;These findings indicate that the endocrine system may play an important role in anxiety. Doctors should also consider the thyroid gland and the rest of the endocrine system, as well as the nervous system, when examining patients with anxiety,&#8221; Dr Onofriichuk explains. This knowledge could help patients with anxiety receive more effective treatment that improves thyroid function and could have a long-term positive effect on their mental health. However, sex and adrenal gland hormones were not taken in to account in this study, and these can also have a serious effect on anxiety. Dr Onofriichuk now plans to conduct further research that examines the levels of thyroid, sex and adrenal hormones (cortisol, progesterone, prolactin, oestrogen and testosterone) in patients with dysfunctional thyroid glands and anxiety disorders. It also protects the brain from degeneration and it works to improve anxiety symptoms by destroying free radicals that cause damage to the brain and body. Kava Root Research shows that kava root can be used to treat anxiety because it&#8217;s a nonaddictive and non-hypnotic anxiolytic. Kava is used to improve mood, ease anxiety and boost sociability. It works by stimulating dopamine receptors and inducing euphoria. In fact, a randomized controlled trial conducted in Australia found that kava can be considered a first-line therapy for generalized anxiety disorder and it&#8217;s shown to be safe for people undergoing treatment. (14) And a meta-analysis reported by Cochrane, which involved 7 trials, suggests that there are significant effects from kava treatment for anxiety with few side effects, which are all considered mild. (15) Take kava under the guidance of your health care provider, as it can interact with certain medications. Symptoms of Hypothyroidism The opposite of an overactive thyroid is, logically, an underactive thyroid. It&#8217;s important to know a TSH test alone does not tell you why your TSH levels are too high or too low. The conventional treatment for hypothyroidism is levothyroxine sodium tablets, also known as Synthroid. This medication is taken as a synthetic hormone replacement to help regulate thyroid levels. Doctors typically recommend taking this medication daily for the rest of one&#8217;s life. The first step in natural treatment of hypothyroidism is to eliminate the causes of thyroid dysfunction, such as inflammation, overuse of medications, nutrient deficiencies and changes in hormones due to stress. In addition to these positive findings, researchers indicated that no serious side effects occurred in either group. In fact, most doctors don&#8217;t even recognize the problem in the first place especially when it comes to men. And that makes thyroid disease the most underdiagnosed condition in the country. You may be suffering from some of the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction. Typically these symptoms include feeling unusual fatigue for no reason, heart palpitations, depression, hypersensitivity to cold or excessive sweating, aching joints, trouble concentrating, brain fog and weight gain or weight loss for no reason. Although ignored by mainstream medicine, numerous studies prove beyond doubt that nasty industrial molecules like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and bisphenol A (BPA) disrupt thyroid function.1,2,3,4 Other research has discovered that people with higher blood concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)  a chemical used in non-stick cookware, as well as stain- and water-resistant coating for carpets and fabrics have higher rates of thyroid disease.5 And research on heavy metals â€” mercury, aluminum, cadmium, arsenic and lead found in seafood, dental amalgams, environmental pollution and vaccines are also among the worst offenders.6,7 When my patients at the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine come to me with thyroid issues, I take a completely different approach. Most doctors won&#8217;t do anything about thyroid dysfunction until it turns into a full-blown disease. Then they&#8217;ll most likely treat your symptoms with the Big Pharma drug, Synthroid. I never prescribe this synthetic hormone, because it only masks the problem. And it can also cause a lot of side effects including bone fractures, joint pain, irregular heartbeat, fatigue, muscle weakness, insomnia, temporary hair loss, irritability and vomiting. That&#8217;s why I treat thyroid dysfunction by getting to the real root of the problem. I recommend that my patients detox their bodies every six months. Once the toxins are gone, you&#8217;ll feel a million times better and your glands will start working once again with vigor. Support Your Thyroid Naturally at Home In addition to detoxing your body, I also recommend supporting your thyroid with natural thyroid boosters. 1. Pass the salt, please. You probably already know that iodine is your thyroid&#8217;s number one nutrient. The easiest way to get enough iodine is to season your food with iodized sea salt. You can also try eating edible marine plants, such as wakame and nori, which are high in iodine. Or you can take iodized oil capsules and supplements. I recommend getting 300 mcg of iodine daily for optimal thyroid health. 2. Then eat these two nuts. A deficiency in selenium is far more dangerous to your thyroid than low iodine levels. Low selenium causes an intolerance of iodine in your body. The best food source of selenium is Brazil nuts. I recommend 200 mcg of selenium a day and one Brazil nut contains around 100 mcg so you just need two per day. Or you can take a supplement. Most multivitamins contain a little selenium, but make sure you&#8217;re getting 200 mcg per day. 3. Don&#8217;t forget this Ayurvedic herb. Ashwagandha has been used for centuries by Ayurveda healers to normalize the amount of hormones secreted by your thyroid. This keeps your levels from going too high or dropping too low.8 I recommend 500 mg a day. You can buy it in capsule form. 4. Finally, take this before bed.
