Karen Sanders via NaturalHealth365 – Many believe that sleep has always been critically important to humans, both as a resource and a pure enjoyment source. Today, the gold standard for sleep is 8 hours per night. That, the scientific community assures us, is enough to feel rested and stave off various diseases. Clinical studies have shown that ensuring you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night keeps the immune system strong. However, new research shows that the kind of sleep you get might be more important than how much. The Amount of Sleep People Need Depends On Genetics, Scientists Claim Rarely does quantity win out over quality, and the same is true for sleep. Researchers at UC San Francisco have discovered genes that regulate “elite sleep” in a lucky few humans. This allows them to get the rest they need in only 4 to 6 hours, where the majority of us need closer to 8. Researchers have discovered the role of genetics and identified five genes that contribute to this elite sleeping ability, though they predict there are many more. They also stress that such people aren’t just surviving on reduced hours … it’s a true, healthy preference. And it comes down to what happens while they’re sleeping. Here Is Why Some People Only Need 4 Hours, While Others 8 Hours of Sleep Every Night Most of us think of sleep as something that takes place in an inviolable window. Over the course of eight hours, our bodies go from tired and unfueled to recharged and ready to go. Yet thinking of sleep like this misses the point, researchers say. It’s not about how long you’re there. It’s about what happens while you’re asleep. In this sense, sleep is more like a checklist, in which the body: Heals cardiovascular tissue and blood vessels Removes toxic waste from the brain Reorganizes neural pathways Restores energy for use the next day Repairs damaged tissue Releases hormones It’s the checklist of tasks that must occur during sleep that matters, not the length of the sleep window. Can You Become an “Elite Sleeper”? For people who can get it all done in 4 hours, so much the better. Especially considering the rest of us – without favorable genetics – face health consequences for getting less than 6 hours of shuteye a night. The secret lies in the genetic puzzle elite sleepers comprise. Scientists know that sleep is regulated by tons of genes. It is also regulated by many areas of the brain. That means when one area of the brain is injured or diseased, it is likely to affect sleep. This is the reason scientists hope to figure out why some people sleep so well, and by pinpointing the genes responsible, they hope to simulate that effect in people who need it. What Does This Mean for You? Although this research is certainly promising, it may only have a significant bearing on you later in life when Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia become more likely. For now, though, it’s simply important to keep getting those ZZZs. Chances are you could stand to improve your sleep quality (and for most of us, quantity). If so, you can try herbs to help you relax, reduce sugar in your diet, and try to go to bed at the same time every night. In addition, eliminate your exposure to artificial light (from T.V., computers, or mobile devices) that inhibits your ability to produce melatonin, needed for sleep. Simply put, a good night’s sleep will help you to detoxify the body, regenerate damaged tissue and protect your overall wellbeing. Make it a top priority, starting tonight.

Maayan Jaffe-Hoffman via The Jerusalem Post – Scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology say they have found a way to rejuvenate the aging process of the body’s immune system. Prof. Doron Melamed and doctoral student Reem Dowery sought to understand why the elderly population is more susceptible to severe cases of COVID-19 and why the vaccines seem to be less effective and wane faster among this population. The results of their work were published this month in the peer-reviewed, online medical journal Blood. The secret begins with B cells, also known as B lymphocytes. These are the cells that produce antibodies against any pathogen that enters the body. They play a key role in protecting people from viruses and diseases. B cells are produced in bone marrow and then travel through the blood to lymph nodes and the spleen, where they wait for pathogens to enter and then attack them. “When you are young, you have young cells, and young cells have a very diverse ability to recognize anything [pathogenic] that comes into your body,” Melamed told The Jerusalem Post. B cells do not live long, but they are constantly being replenished by new ones sent from the bone marrow, creating what Melamed calls “homeostasis,” a state in which the total number of B cells in the bone marrow and outside remains constant. However, B cells do not just disappear. They turn into “memory” B cells so that if the body is exposed to a previous pathogen, the individual will not get sick. That is because the immune response will be fast and robust, and it will eliminate the pathogen, often without the individual knowing he or she had been exposed to it. Unlike B cells, memory cells are long-lived. “Imagine you are growing into adulthood, and you become an adult and then an older person,” Melamed said. “You accumulate in your body many memory cells. You are exposed all the time to pathogens, and hence you make more and more memory cells. Because these are so long-lived, there is no room left for new B cells.” What happens when a new pathogen, such as the coronavirus, comes along? There are no young B cells that can recognize it. That is one of the reasons why older people are more susceptible to severe COVID-19 and many other diseases. As noted, this happens because of the body’s need for homeostasis, something that Melamed’s lab discovered a decade ago. BUT THIS year, they took the discovery another step and figured out a mechanism to override the system. “We found specific hormonal signals produced by the old B cells, the memory cells, that inhibit the bone marrow from producing new B cells,” Melamed said. “This is a huge discovery. It is like finding a needle in a haystack.” It also means that, over time, specific drugs or treatments can be found to inhibit one of the hormones in the signaling pathway and get the bone marrow to produce new B cells. To validate their theory, Melamed’s lab collaborated with the departments of hematology and rheumatology at Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv and Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa. As part of treatment for some medical conditions, such as lupus, lymphoma and multiple sclerosis, patients undergo B cell depletion, meaning a significant amount of memory B cells is removed from their bodies. Examining older patients who underwent this procedure, the group found that their immune systems rejuvenated, and their bodies could produce new B cells again. An effect similar to B cell depletion can be produced by inhibiting one of the hormones in the signaling pathway that suppresses the production of new B cells. “Now we understand that there is some kind of conversation between compartments in the body, between how B cells are produced and what controls that,” Melamed said. In the interim, he recommended that doctors use this knowledge to protect the elderly better, such as by instituting a vaccination program targeted just for the adult population that preempts variants with an additional shot. “Even every three or four months, vaccinate them again and again to ensure they maintain high antibodies,” Melamed said. He also suggested mixing vaccines, such as combining a shot of a Pfizer mRNA vaccine with an AstraZeneca booster given several months later, “which may generate better stimulation of the elderly immune system.” At the same time, clinical trials would be needed to determine how to safely inhibit the hormones to find a longer-term solution, hopefully before the next pandemic, Melamed said.

Lorie Johnson via CBN News – In the last decade, health experts touted the benefits of having plenty of good bacteria in the gut. They say having a diverse gut microbiome strengthens the immune system. As it turns out, a diverse microbiome in our environment operates the same way. In other words, there are plenty of good bugs all around us that can help us fight off disease. However, during the COVID pandemic more than ever before, many of the good bugs in our environment are being wiped out with high-powered cleansers like antibacterial agents and bleach. While health experts stress the importance of fighting COVID by washing hands and surfaces with mild cleansers, such as old-fashioned soap and water, they say disinfecting may literally be overkill. When New York City shut down the subways for four hours each day for disinfecting it deprived untold residents of much-needed transportation. Many of these travelers worked at hospitals and other health care facilities treating COVID patients, the last people who needed additional hardship during the pandemic. To make matters worse, some scientists declared the subway shutdown a colossal waste of time and money. “It looks a bit to me like ‘cleaning theatre,'” Dr. Jack Gilbert, microbiome researcher, University of California San Diego professor and author of Dirt Is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System told CBN News, adding the purpose of the disinfecting project may actually have been “to make people feel more comfortable about using those environments. Bleaching the surfaces will have very, very little impact upon the spread of the disease.” That’s because science tells us COVID-19 is spread mainly through personal contact. Furthermore, Dr. Gilbert points out the fact that once a surface is sanitized, it doesn’t stay that way for long. “If you sterilize a surface, in a few minutes after sterilization the microbes from our body are re-colonizing that surface.” During this pandemic, welcoming some of the germs living all around us may seem scary, but it’s generally better than killing them all. “The negative consequences of bleaching the environment, especially if you have very young children in the environment, can actually lead to chronic consequences which may be worse,” Dr. Gilbert said, adding the good bugs we encounter, especially as youngsters, can help prevent food allergies, skin problems like eczema and even issues associated with autism. “Those experiences that those children are getting shape how their immune system develops. And that can shape how our brains develop,” he said. Growing Up With Dirt Think about all the germs surrounding barnyard animals or even household pets. Turns out, those bugs are good for us. Growing up with animals can reduce the lifetime risk of a number of ailments. For example, asthma strikes about one in ten Americans. Children who grow up with a dog, however, are 13-percent less likely to develop this serious lung disease. Kids on farms do even better, enjoying a 50-percent reduction. In the age of COVID, doctors say it’s never been more important to wash our hands. However, we can go overboard. Mayo Clinic researcher Dr. Heidi Nelson told CBN News that exposure to certain microorganisms can help fight disease. “Keeping clean is good, but there probably is such a thing as too clean,” she said, adding that exposure to a diverse array of microorganisms in the environment can help fight disease. “We all grew up playing in the dirt and it didn’t hurt us and it probably kept us healthy and having a strong immune system,” she said. In his book, Eat Dirt: Why Leaky Gut May Be the Root Cause of Your Health Problems and 5 Surprising Steps to Cure It, Dr. Josh Axe, who has the number one natural health website, told CBN News that a preoccupation with disinfecting everything in sight puts us at risk for chronic illnesses. “What a lot of people don’t realize is by using excessive sanitizers and bleaches they’re actually weakening their immune system.” The Natural Approach Dr. Axe says some cleansers contain harsh chemicals that can harm the skin and gut. He recommends a more natural approach. “If we use things like essential oils that are referenced in the Bible we’re not going to have those same side effects, yet it’s going to help sanitize us and keep us healthy,” he said. He recommends this recipe for a general household cleanser. HOMEMADE HOUSEHOLD CLEANSER INGREDIENTS: 8 Ounces Water 4 Ounces Distilled White Vinegar 15 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil 15 Drops Lemon Essential Oil DIRECTIONS: Fill a spray bottle with ingredients. Close bottle and shake to mix. Shake bottle before each spray. In addition to gentle cleansers that kill bad germs while still allowing our immune system to flourish, Dr. Axe points to other COVID-fighting strategies. “I recommend getting zinc, around 30 milligrams a day, Vitamin D at 5,000 IUs a day and Vitamin C at 1,000 milligrams a day,” he said, continuing, “I really like echinacea because of how it strengthens the lungs, elderberry because of how it fights viruses and astragalus for its immune-boosting properties.” So while health experts advise washing hands and surfaces often with plain, old soap and water or another type of mild cleanser, they warn that super-sanitizing with antibacterial soap or bleach may literally be overkill.

Dr. Don Colbert – Since World War II, we’ve been in a battle with an enemy that’s growing in strength each year. Devastatingly, approximately 700,000 people die from antibiotic-resistant bacteria infections, or superbugs, every year worldwide. This includes 35,000 Americans (1). It’s an astounding number. Unfortunately, the current trend suggests it will only get worse especially if we continue to weaken our immune defenses on a personal basis and allow these infectious superbugs to spread throughout communities. What can be done? We can each invest in the health of our bodies and support our immune systems. Here’s how superbugs came to be, why their threat is growing, and what you can do specifically to bolster your immune defenses. The Story of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and Superbugs Soon after antibiotics became available and throughout World War II, scientists began to realize that antibiotic resistance could become a problem. Both British and American troops were given penicillin to fight infections during the war. To meet the demand, pharmaceutical companies ramped up production. About a year after the war ended, many experts began warning that penicillin could become useless if it continued to be over-used. Alexander Fleming, the physician-scientist who was recognized for discovering penicillin (2), warned that using non-lethal amounts of penicillin may allow bacteria to become resistant to it. In other words, bacteria may become stronger and adapt to antibiotics. If a low dose is taken, the antibiotics kill the weak bacteria, leaving only the strongest as survivors. Over time, new types of resistant bacteria could emerge and multiply. Once these bacteria infect a host, newer, different, and/or stronger antibiotics would be needed. Why It’s Still a Modern Global Threat At the time, scientists did not worry too much about the resistant bacteria. New strains of antibiotics were being produced, and they were optimistic they would be able to kill any bacterial threat with a different antibiotic. Unfortunately, Flemming’s warning was not heeded. Even now, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are not talked about much outside scientific circles. And, our lifestyles continue to enable the emergence of new strains and threats. Our overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial products allows the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In addition, our consumption of foods from livestock in which antibiotics have been used further destroys our own immune defenses and allows antibiotic-resistant bacteria to proliferate. Now, the World Health Organization projects as many as 10 million people per year may die from antibiotic-resistant by 2050 if current trends are sustained (3). The Threat to Your Immune Defenses In your own life, it may seem like your immune defenses are under attack from all sides. We have viruses, bacteria, and intolerances to contend with, and this is nothing new. Mankind has dealt with threats throughout human history. The difference with superbugs is that we may not have medications to fight them, and unlike many viruses, they don’t always just run their course. What can you do? It’s essential to stay as healthy as possible with lifestyle choices and habits. This can put your body in a position to fight microbes. How to Support a Healthy Immune Function There are 3 primary ways you can support your immune function. You can: 1. AVOID DETRIMENTAL LIFESTYLE HABITS, OVERUSE OF MEDICATION, AND TOXINS THAT HARM YOUR IMMUNE FUNCTION. Do you know what harms your immune system? Specific foods such as sugars, refined carbohydrates, modern gluten, those that cause intolerance and inflammation, processed fats, and more can harm your immune system. Sedentary lifestyles can reduce your immune response. Inadequate sleep and high levels of stress are detrimental to immune function. And, as described above, any overuse of antibiotics can harm your immune defenses and reduce your own healthy bacteria’s ability to fight for you. 2. DO YOUR VERY BEST TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT, NORMALIZED BLOOD SUGARS, AND HEALTHY CARDIOVASCULAR FUNCTION. Unfortunately, overweight individuals are at a higher risk of abnormal blood sugars and cardiovascular issues. Both of these situations can increase the risk of infection and decrease the strength of immune defenses. It’s crucial to make lifestyle choices to support a healthy weight including reinforcing for the health of your digestive tract, cutting down on carbohydrates and sugars, and engaging in regular exercise. 3. SUPPORT HEALTHY IMMUNE FUNCTION DIRECTLY BY CARING FOR THE SPECIFIC ORGANS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. There are specific organs and systems responsible for healthy immune function. Your digestive tract is vitally important to immune function. Your kidneys, liver, lungs, and lymph system are crucial. How can you keep them healthy? You can give them the nutrients they need like fibers, probiotics and prebiotics, antioxidants, anti-inflammations, and more to stay strong. Then, cut out the foods and habits that harm them like drinking alcohol, eating inflammatory fats, overusing antibiotics, and more. One great step to supporting all your immune system organs is joining Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast. You can learn everything you need to remove the toxins that build up in our bodies and damage it while giving it the nutrients that support health. We Were Not Given a Spirit of Fear This is not intended to be a fear-inducing article, but timely information to encourage you to take charge of your health. We will have trouble in this world; we know that. There are many things that can attack us physically, spiritually, and mentally. However, we were not given a spirit of fear. We know we can meet challenges head-on, and that God has given us amazing bodies that can overcome the threats. He’s given us tools to keep our bodies healthy, and the desire to do so. You can do it. It’s time to work towards a healthy lifestyle, a healthy weight, and strong immune defenses. Bottom Line Superbugs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a real threat. They are nothing new, but with modern lifestyles they are becoming more powerful and more abundant. It’s vital to take control of your health and immune defenses. Join us in Dr. Colbert’s 21 Day Detox and Fast to learn what you can do to stay healthy, support immune health, and be ready for any microbial threat that comes your way.

News Staff via CBN News – New numbers from the CDC reveal 94 percent of Americans who have died from COVID-19 already had underlying health problems. This reinforces what doctors have been telling us all along, that the weakest among us are the ones who are most susceptible to the virus. CBN News Medical Reporter Lorie Johnson explains, “The data does not suggest that these people with underlying conditions would have died anyway from that condition if they had not been infected with coronavirus. It should not be interpreted to mean that the only ‘real’ coronavirus deaths are the ones where the patient had no underlying conditions.” Since God created us with immune systems to fight disease, Johnson points out we should work on improving our health to make us less vulnerable to serious complications from viruses like COVID. “We need to stay as healthy as possible, because that way our body is better able to fight off the virus if it enters our body,” she explained on CBN Newswatch. “Believe it or not, doctors recommend eating less sugar because new research shows too much sugar can blunt our body’s ability to fight off the virus.” Johnson spoke with Dr. Michael Goran, a sugar researcher at USC who said since COVID could be with us for a while, now is a good time to give up sugar. “Clearly a high sugar diet in the long term is going to contribute to longer-term increases in your blood glucose levels,” he began. “And what these studies are showing is that when you have a higher blood glucose level in general it contributes to this kind of broad, across-the-body, low-grade state of inflammation that comes along with that high blood glucose.” “And so what these studies are showing is that when you have that low-grade inflammation across the body, when you actually get an infection, like from COVID-19, the response becomes a little abnormal and the body responds to the low-grade inflammation throughout the body instead of just attacking the COVID. So it’s not a good thing to have broad-scale inflammation in the body when your immune system needs to fight COVID-19.” “The combination is not very good and you have a greater amount of complications to the infection because the thinking is that the immune system is attacking other parts of the body instead of the COVID 19,” he explained. Dr. Goran just wrote a book called Sugarproof that comes out on September 1, and it’s all about how sugar harms children. The book offers practical advice about how to get them off the sweet stuff and even includes recipes. Childhood obesity is a known problem in America, but even skinny kids often eat too much sugar which can adversely affect their development. It can cause attention problems, anxiety and inflammatory conditions such as asthma and acne. And beware that even if you’re buying organic cereal and goat milk yogurt don’t think they are low in sugar. Meanwhile, the head of the Food and Drug Administration says he’s open to fast-tracking a COVID-19 vaccine before clinic trials are completed. Dr. Stephen Hahn told the Financial Times that, under the right circumstances, an emergency authorization could be approved while stage three trials are still underway. Dr. Hahn said the drug company would have to request emergency authorization before the FDA makes the decision. He stressed that pressure from the White House would not influence the decision.

Al Sears, MD, CNS – This new field of medicine is exciting and echoes what I’ve been telling my patients for years: keep your immune system strong. In the not-so-distant future, I see a world where all the chronic diseases that plague us today will be cured before they’ve even begun. That may sound like science fiction, but it’s not. In fact, it’s already happening with a revolutionary stem-cell treatment developed by oncologist and stem-cell pioneer Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj right here in South Florida. And that’s why I made Dr. Maharaj one of the key speakers at my Palm Beach Anti-Aging Summit at the historic Palm Beach icon Mara-a-Lago. You’ve probably heard about stem cells on the news and wondered if they can help you or a loved one with a chronic or autoimmune disease. The answer is YES. The problem is that most doctors won’t talk about stem cells. That’s because the latest breakthrough treatments – which have only recently become available to people who want to reverse or protect themselves from chronic disease – are considered “experimental.” Stem cells are the master cells from which all other human cells are made. They’re also the ultimate natural cure, because they let the body do what it does best: heal itself. Many stem cells have the power to morph into any kind of cell in your body, heart, brain, nerve, liver cells, you name it. That’s why scientists say that stem cells will be used someday to regenerate the damaged tissue of any organ. But stem cells in your bone marrow have a different purpose – they are destined to become vital components of your immune system. And that’s the key to this breakthrough treatment that has already reversed various cancers, diabetes, and a number of autoimmune disorders. It’s based on the answer to a simple but important question: Why do some people get chronic diseases and others don’t? Because when chronic disease strikes, it means your immune system has broken down. A study published by the American Society of Hematology found thriving immune systems in centenarians and healthy seniors, but those who were younger and had chronic diseases all had weakened immune systems. Specifically, those with chronic diseases had fewer special killer cells called Natural Killer (NK) cells, a type of white blood cell that targets cancer and infected cells. And only adult stem cells in your bone marrow can make NK cells. At the first sign of trouble, your NK cells flood into your blood stream to infiltrate tumors and infections, and attack them. It’s all about bulking up your immune system. Take cancer, for example. Cancer isn’t the mysterious illness your doctor and the rest of the medical establishment want you to believe. Like other chronic diseases, cancer is your body’s natural reaction to the inflammation caused by the toxic, modern environment around you. That’s why cancer cells are constantly forming inside you; we live in a toxic world. But if your immune system is strong, it will swat those cancer cells like flies, along with every other disease going. The problem is that inflammation destroys your immune system. In fact, your immune system has been under attack from inflammation-causing irritants for years and you’ve been unaware of it, because it’s been happening at the cellular level. These silent irritants are slowly killing you: • Environmental toxins and pollutants; • Poor diet; • Excess weight; • Cigarette smoke. But there is one irritant that is worse than all of the above… I’m talking about stress. Chronic stress has a devastating effect on your immune system, and has been linked to the inflammation that causes heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer. Here’s why: Your immune system responds to chronic stress with one, overriding reaction – and that’s inflammation. But here’s good news: The solution to repairing your broken immune system is found in the stem cells of your own bone marrow – no matter what your age or your state of health. This breakthrough therapy works by tapping the stem cells you already have in your own body, then freezing and storing them so you can use them against diseases you may get in the future. Storing your stem cells is perhaps also the ultimate in “bio-insurance.” But even if you already have a chronic disease, your immune system stem cells can still be “activated” with a special protein to produce more NK cells. This new field of medicine is exciting and echoes what I’ve been telling my patients for years: keep your immune system strong. It’s your best ally against disease – even cancer. So here are my top four immune-system boosters you can start with at home right away: 1. Watch your diet. Our modern diet has replaced nutritious, healthy protein and fats with “empty” calories like grains and starchy carbohydrates. Switch to a diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins to boost your immune system and your ability to fight off infections. You should also avoid high fructose corn syrup, which causes inflammation. 2. Get plenty of sleep. Your stem cells and immune system need sleep. This is when your body’s maintenance work takes place. When you’re deprived of sleep, your immune system suffers and your body becomes vulnerable. 3. Cut your stress. Stress creates a hormone called cortisol. A little cortisol can help you. But a steady stream of it is toxic to your immune system. You should clear the stress from your mind and your body for at least 10 minutes every day. Mediation or yoga can be great stress busters. And so is exercise. 4. Take cat’s claw. There are a number of immune-system boosting herbs you can take, and one of my favorites is cat’s claw. This herb stimulates T-cells to boost the immune system and fight infection. You can find it in health food stores. Look for a supplement made from the inner bark of the plant and take 500 mg. per day. To your good health, Al Sears, MD, CNS To read the original article click here.
