Dr. Don Colbert – Would you like to improve the condition of your skin? Would you like to transform your skin despite the upcoming dry winter weather? A more healthy and youthful appearance? Collagen can help. However, many popular collagen products are little more than a waste of money. They either do not contain the right type of collagen or the right amount. There is a collagen catch. Transform Your Skin? The Collagen Catch Did you know that most studies that show a significant transformation in skin appearance use 5 to 10, and sometimes even 12+ grams of collagen per day? What’s more, there are over 30 different types of collagen. The type that can transform your skin is Type I. But, if you’d like more benefit from your collagen powder, you can choose a collagen that has 3-4 different types that support ligament, joint, digestion, and immune health. How to Get the Right Amount and Type of Collagen for Skin How do you get Type I Collagen? Type I Collagen is most abundant from bovine and marine sources. However, some experts have concerns regarding bovine (cow) allergies and disease from cows. Many believe the “cleanest” and best Type I collagen comes from marine sources like fish (1). In addition, it’s important to get enough. Since most human studies show benefits when participants consume 5-10 grams of collagen per day, powders are the best form. Unfortunately, gummies, pills, and collagen-fortified foods often contain 0.5-1 grams collagen. Lastly, for best results, choose collagen in the form of hydrolyzed collagen powder. Hydrolyzed collagen is the form that is most efficiently absorbed and distributed throughout the body and skin. In the skin, hydrolyzed collagen has been shown to 1) provide building blocks for skin collagen and elastin fibers, and 2) stimulate the creation and growth of new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid (2). How Does the Right Amount of Type I Hydrolyzed Collagen Transform Your Skin? The Research 1. HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN SUPPORTS SKIN ELASTICITY A 2014 study of 46 women, ages 35-55, showed that eight weeks of collagen powder supplementation improved skin elasticity within just 4 weeks (3). When skin’s elasticity is improved it can stretch and rebound better, without sagging. This increases a youthful appearance. 2. COLLAGEN MAY REDUCE THE APPEARANCE OF WRINKLES Another 2014 study concluded that collagen supplementation reduced wrinkles after just 8 weeks of use (4). What’s more, a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology concluded that collagen supplementation not only improved skin moisture but also produced younger-looking, less-fragmented skin (5). 3. THE STRUCTURE OF SKIN IS AFFECTED BY COLLAGEN INTAKE In a 2017 lab study, researchers found that 6 months of oral consumption of collagen increased the collagen content in the skin. It also improved the skin structure and improved the density of different types of collagen (type I and type III). This resulted in improved color and luster of the skin and fur. While this was a study on mice, it is promising for human skin and hair as well (6). 4. COLLAGEN CAN INCREASE SKIN HYDRATION The same study that showed increased skin elasticity showed a measurable decrease in transepidermal water loss and dryness of skin. What’s more, another study of 20 Japanese women concluded that 10 grams of Hydrolyzed Collagen per day improved the water absorption capacity of the skin compared to the placebo group (7). 5. GET MORE SKIN ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY WITH COLLAGEN Our skin is constantly under assault from oxidative stress from our environment (smoke, pollution, UV rays, etc.). By increasing the antioxidant activity in the skin, we increase our chances of fighting these assaults and reducing age-related results (8). 6. BETTER WOUND HEALING WITH COLLAGEN In a 2009 lab study, researchers found that collagen supplementation produced quicker wound closure and better tissue regeneration at the wound site. What’s more, the treated mice also formed thicker and better-organized collagen fibers (10). 7. COLLAGEN HELPS THE BODY ABSORB MORE NUTRIENTS We depend on our digestive tract to absorb the nutrients our cells, tissues, and organs need to thrive. Collagen can help improve digestion, thereby increasing the beneficial nutrients, fats and amino acids that reach the skin. What Else Can Collagen Do? Again, there are over 30 types of naturally-occurring collagen. Many types support human health. First, Type II collagen supports your immune function and encourages recovery when you are sick. It also supports joint, ligament, cartilage and digestive health. Type II is a major part of our gut lining, and it acts as a barrier between the substances we consume and our bloodstream. This helps both digestion and immune function. It is found in chicken- and bovine-sourced collagen. Next, Type III Collagen promotes cardiovascular health. Remarkably, it helps form arterial walls. Type III collagen is often sourced from bovine and other animals. While 80-90% of human collagen is types I, II, and III, there are other types. Two other important types are V and X. These are important for cell membranes, placenta health during pregnancy, bone formation, and more. When you get chicken or bovine sources collagen, you are usually getting at least a small amount of these types as well. Get the Best Hydrolyzed Collagen to Transform Your Skin & More!

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DMN, CNS – Wondering about major sources of collagen? Fish collagen definitely tops the list. While there are benefits associated with all animal collagen sources, fish collagen peptides are known to have the best absorption and bioavailability due to their smaller particle sizes compared to other animal collagens, making them antioxidant powerhouses. Bioavailability is highly important since it largely determines the efficacy of any nutrient you ingest. Fish collagen is absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently into the body and has superior bioavailability over bovine or porcine collagens. Since it’s absorbed more efficiently and enters the bloodstream more quickly, it’s considered the best collagen source for medicinal purposes. Fish collagen’s ability to be more easily absorbed by our bodies is thanks to its lower molecular weight and size, which allow the collagen to be absorbed at a higher level through the intestinal barrier into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body. This leads to collagen synthesis in the joint tissues, bones, skin dermis and many other essential body systems. Since we don’t tend to eat the parts of the fish containing collagen (mainly skin and scales), making homemade fish stock or supplementing with collagen is the next best thing. What Is Fish Collagen? Fish collagen is a complex structural protein that helps maintain the strength and flexibility of: skin ligaments joints bones muscles tendons blood vessels gums eyes nails hair It’s a type I collagen, which is the most abundant collagen in the human body. Type I is best known for providing the foundation for beautiful skin, strong connective tissues and sturdy bones. Fish collagen peptides have very specific amino acid compositions with a high concentration of glycine, hydroxyproline and proline. When fish collagen is ingested, hydroxyproline peptides are not completely digested to free amino acids and can be detected in the blood. These hydroxyproline peptides stimulate cells in the skin, joints and bones, and they lead to collagen synthesis through cell activation and growth. The scales, skin, bones and fins of fresh or saltwater fish are used for the creation of fish collagen supplements. Since these parts are considered waste products during fish processing, using them to create other products helps reduce environmental pollution. Health Benefits 1. Anti-Aging Since fish collagen is a type I collagen and type I collagen is what our skin consists of, it’s not surprising that it can benefit the skin. It helps prevent and improve any signs of skin aging, making it a great anti-aging food. Possible skin benefits of consuming this collagen include improved smoothness, better moisture retention, increased suppleness and prevention of deep wrinkle formation. Hydrolyzed fish collagen is composed of small, low molecular weight peptides, which are easily digested, absorbed and distributed by the human body. Research published in 2015 in the Open Nutraceuticals Journal states how numerous clinical trials have now been performed showing the efficacy and benefits of collagen peptides on skin properties, including hydration, elasticity and reduction of wrinkles. Researchers conclude that hydrolyzed collagen is a smart weapon in the everyday fight against the undesirable yet visible signs of aging. 2. Bone Healing and Regeneration Fish collagen has shown its ability to increase the body’s own natural collagen production. In the past, studies have demonstrated that collagen peptides from fish skin might have a positive effect on bone health by increasing bone mineral density and exerting anti-inflammatory activity on osteoarthritis. The goal of one 2013 study was to determine effects of fish collagen peptides on collagen synthesis, quality and mineralization. Findings of the study show that the fish collagen has a positive effect on collagen synthesis and collagen quality. Researchers also found that the fish collagen was helpful in the matrix mineralization of bone-synthesizing cells in vitro. While this study did not involve human subjects, it does show how fish collagen is biomaterial that can aid bone healing and regeneration. Furthermore, researchers from the NC Oral Health Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Dentistry examined the effects of fish collagen peptides in an osteoblastic cell culture system. They found that fish collagen peptide supplementation “exerts a positive effect on osteoblastic cells in terms of collagen synthesis, quality and mineralization, thereby suggesting the potential utility of FCP for bone tissue engineering.” 3. Wound Healing Fish collagen might help your next scrape, scratch or more serious wound to heal better and faster. The ability of a wound to heal is ultimately based on collagen, which is essential to wound healing because it helps the body form new tissue. Type I collagen is the most abundant structural component of the dermal matrix so it makes perfect sense that having more type I collagen in your body might help wounds to heal faster. It was previously believed that collagens were just structural supports. Now we know that collagen and collagen-derived fragments control many cellular functions, including cell shape and differentiation, cell migration, as well as the synthesis of a number of important proteins. Collagen also plays a critical role in all phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. 4. Increased Protein Intake By consuming fish collagen, you don’t just get collagen — you get everything that collagen contains. Fish collagen is over 97 percent protein with no fat, sugars or carbohydrates, making it one of the absolute best protein foods on the planet. It also has a very distinctive amino acid profile. Amino acids are organic compounds that combine to form proteins. They, along with proteins, are the building blocks of our bodies. By increasing your protein intake through consuming collagen, you can improve your workouts, avoid muscle loss (and prevent sarcopenia) and have a better recovery post-workout. More collagen protein in your diet also always helps with weight management. 5. Antibacterial Abilities Research out of Canada published in 2016 found that fish collagen has yet another impressive component: collagencin, which is an antibacterial peptide from fish collagen. This study found that collagencin completely inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, more commonly known as staph or staph infection. Staph is a very serious, highly contagious infection caused by bacteria commonly found on the skin or in the nose. For the future, marine collagens look like a promising source of antimicrobial peptides, which could improve both human health as well as food safety. Nutrition The exact nutritional content of fish collagens varies. Here’s an example of a 10-gram serving of hydrolyzed fish collagen, which contains about: (9) 45 calories 9.4 grams protein 0.07 milligrams potassium 0.05 milligrams calcium 0.04 milligrams iron Fish Collagen vs. Other Types Bovine (cow or beef) collagen: Bovine collagen comes from cows, specifically from their skin, bones and muscles. It’s made of mostly types 1 and 3 collagen, which is a good fit considering these are the most abundant types created and found in the human body. It’s a rich supply of glycine and proline and therefore useful for creatine production, building muscle and also helping the body make its own collagen. Chicken collagen: The type of collagen most abundant in chicken collagen is type 2, which is best for building cartilage. This makes it beneficial for joint health, especially since this source also provides chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate — both of which have anti-aging effects. Most supplements containing collagen usually use chicken collagen and provide type 2. Fish collagen: Collagen derived from fish has been found to be easily absorbed and provide mostly type 1 collagen, with the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. Because type 1 can be found throughout the entire body, consuming more fish collagen has been associated with benefits for the joints, skin, vital organs, blood vessels, digestion and bones. Hydroxyproline is an important component of the collagen triple helix, and lower levels have been associated with joint degradation and therefore symptoms/signs of aging. Hydroxyproline is needed for collagen stability and is created by modifying normal proline amino acids after the collagen chain is built. This reaction also requires vitamin C (to assist in the addition of oxygen), which is why vitamin C deficiency can cause abnormalities in collagen levels. Egg shell membrane collagen: Egg collagen, found in the shells and whites of eggs, contains mostly type 1 collagen. It also has type 3, 4 and 10, but by far the most type 1, just like the human body (approximately 100 times more type 1 than type 4). It provides glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid and various amino acids that have benefits for building connective tissue, wound healing, building muscle mass and reducing pain/stiffness. History The first time chemists extracted collagen from fish skin appears to be 1985. Fish collagen is sometimes called marine collagen, but marine collagen products are sometimes sourced from shellfish and jellyfish, which I don’t recommend. Fish collagen is sourced from the scales, skin, bones and fins of fresh or saltwater fish. Historically, full use of the fish body can be seen in many dishes, including the heads and eyes. In Chile and other parts of South America, fish heads are used in a dish called caldillo de congrio, in which the fish heads are boiled together with vegetables and herbs to make a nutrient-dense, collagen-rich stock. This is used as the base for the soup. Fish collagen is high in essential and non-essential amino acids. How to Use You can find a fish collagen supplement at your local health store or online. It’s available as a pill, liquid or powder. You should choose one that comes from a reputable company and is non-GMO and gluten-free. Also, makes sure it has no fillers, sugar, artificial flavors or artificial preservatives. You might find hyaluronic acid and vitamin C included in your marine collagen supplement because they aid the absorption of collagen. Beware of collagen supplements made in countries with loose manufacturing controls and standards. When collagen is hydrolyzed, the protein molecules are broken into smaller molecules. Hydrolyzed fish collagen supplements are more easily digested and absorbed by your body. Fish collagen is different from marine collagen. Many marine collagen products are sourced from shellfish and jellyfish, which I don’t recommend. Always store collagen products in a cool, dry place. You might be scared to buy and use fish collagen products because you think they’ll smell and/or taste like fish. Not to worry — there are many fish collagen products on the market today that are tasteless and odorless or have a neutral, non-fishy taste. You can easily mix powdered collagen with smoothies, coffee, tea or a cup of hot water. You can even add it to soups or sauces. Want to get your dose of fish collagen first thing in the morning? Try adding fish collagen powder to my Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal Recipe — it’s sure to start your day right! Homemade fish stock is another great way to obtain the collagen benefits of fish. Try a Homemade Fishstock Recipe (wine optional) loaded with collagen and other health-promoting nutrients, along with other fish bone brothrecipes. In addition to adding a fish collagen product to your diet, you can also get this tremendous protein through collagen supplementation, such as collagen hydrolysates. Collagen hydrolysate supplements are easy to find at most health food stores or pharmacies. Risks and Side Effects There are no commonly reported side effects of fish collagen. If you’re allergic to fish, then you might need to avoid these collagen products. However, many producers of collagen products derived from fish remove the water-soluble allergens from the skin and significantly reduce the possibility of an allergic reaction. If you consume fish collagen and have a mild allergic reaction, discontinue use. If you have a serious allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately. Speak with your doctor before taking it if you take any other medications or have any ongoing health concerns. Final Thoughts Fish collagen peptides are known to have the best absorption and bioavailability due to their smaller particle sizes compared to other animal collagens. They’re absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently into the body. Fish collagen is considered the best collagen source for medicinal purposes and great for most diets, including the Paleo diet. It’s a type I collagen, which is the most abundant collagen in the human body. Type I is best known for providing the foundation for beautiful skin, strong connective tissues and sturdy bones. This collagen is...

Dr. Don Colbert – Love or hate winter weather, one thing’s for sure, it can wreak havoc on your skin. Can Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder help? If so, what’s the best way to consume it? There are a lot of claims out there regarding collagen supplements. Here’s what the science says when it comes to collagen powder and dry, winter skin. Winter Weather and Your Skin There are many reasons why winter is hard on your skin. They include: Cold air and low humidity. Winter’s cold and dry air can be intensely drying for the skin, vastly reducing the amount of moisture retained. Heaters and indoor fires. Heated indoor air is often dry during the winter. Heaters, forced air, fans and indoor fires all reduce the humidity. Harsh winds. Winds are often stronger during the winter and spring, and this further dries out skin. Coffee and caffeinated teas. When it’s cold outside, many of us drink more warm drinks. If caffeinated, their diuretic effects, while safe, can dry skin from the inside out. Hot showers. A hot shower is actually more drying to the skin than a lukewarm one. If your winter routine includes hot showers, it’s important to keep them short. How can collagen help? 7 Science-Backed Results Showing Collagen Powder Can Improve Dry Winter Skin 1. COLLAGEN POWDER CAN IMPROVE THE ELASTICITY OF SKIN. A 2014 study of 46 women, ages 35-55, showed that eight weeks of collagen powder supplementation improved skin elasticity within just 4 weeks (1). When skin’s elasticity is improved it can stretch and rebound better, without sagging. This increases a youthful appearance. 2. IT CAN REDUCE THE APPEARANCE OF WRINKLES. Another 2014 study concluded that collagen supplementation reduced wrinkles after just 8 weeks of use (2). What’s more, a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology concluded that collagen supplementation not only improved skin moisture but also produced younger-looking, less-fragmented skin (3). 3. COLLAGEN POWDER CAN INCREASE SKIN COLLAGEN CONTENT AND IMPROVE THE STRUCTURE OF THE SKIN. In a 2017 lab study, researchers found that 6 months of oral consumption of collagen increased the collagen content in the skin. It also improved the skin structure and improved the density of different types of collagen (type I and type III). This resulted in improved color and luster of the skin and fur. While this was a study on mice, it is promising for human skin and hair as well (4). 4. IT CAN INCREASE WATER RETENTION IN SKIN. The same study that showed increased skin elasticity showed a measurable decrease in transepidermal water loss and dryness of skin. What’s more, another study of 20 Japanese women concluded that 10 grams of Hydrolyzed Collagenper day improved the water absorption capacity of the skin compared to the placebo group (5). 5. COLLAGEN POWDER CAN INCREASE ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY IN THE SKIN. Our skin is constantly under assault from oxidative stress from our environment (smoke, pollution, UV rays, etc.). By increasing the antioxidant activity in the skin, we increase our chances of fighting these assaults and reducing age-related results (6). 6. COLLAGEN POWDER CAN IMPROVE SKIN WOUND HEALING. In a 2009 lab study, researchers found that collagen supplementation produced quicker wound closure and better tissue regeneration at the wound site. What’s more, the treated mice also formed thicker and better-organized collagen fibers (7). 7. COLLAGEN CAN IMPROVE DIGESTIVE FUNCTION AND DELIVERY OF NUTRIENTS TO THE SKIN. We depend on our digestive tract to absorb the nutrients our cells, tissues, and organs need to thrive. Collagen can help improve digestion, thereby increasing the beneficial nutrients, fats and amino acids that reach the skin. There’s more. Collagen can improve the strength and healing of other connective tissues including ligaments and tendons, and reduce the symptoms of arthritis. What Collagen Is Best? Native vs. Hydrolyzed: The best option for collagen is hydrolyzed collagen powder. While native collagen may have the same amino acids, hydrolyzed is more efficiently absorbed and distributed throughout the body and skin. In the skin, hydrolyzed collagen has been shown to 1) provide building blocks for skin collagen and elastin fibers, and 2) stimulate the creation and growth of new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid (8). Pills vs. Powder: Most of the human studies show benefits when participants are taking 5-10 grams collagen per day. While this is an easy amount to get through a powder (just 1 scoop of this powder), it is quite difficult and expensive from pills. Most pills only contain 0.5-0.75 grams each, so you would need 10-20 pills per day to get enough! Bottom Line No matter the season, hydrolyzed collagen powder is a great, natural, healthful product that can improve your skin in appearance, structure, and integrity. Along with Keto Zone healthy fats and daily hydration, Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder can absolutely improve dry winter skin. To read the original article click here.

BioCell Technology via EurekAlert – New peer-reviewed, published research finds branded dietary matrix of hydrolyzed collagen type II, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid reduced the formation of wrinkles and helped maintain skin elasticity in a laboratory study within 14 weeks. Building on an extensive body of research on the efficacy of BioCell Collagen®, a new published laboratory study finds that daily supplementation with the branded matrix reduced common signs of UVB-induced photoaging compared to the group that did not receive the supplement. The study found that oral supplementation with BioCell Collagen, with controlled UVB exposure, resulted in reduced signs of photoaging, including significant decreases in wrinkles and transepidermal water loss, and significant increases in skin elasticity and hyaluronic acid (HA) content. The full findings of the peer-reviewed study were published in the May issue of Journal of Functional Foods and are available to view on ScienceDirect. UVB and Visible Changes to the Skin Photoaging – skin damage caused by exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light – is responsible for 90 percent of visible changes to the skin. UVB-induced photoaging, like that administered in the study, damages the outermost layers of the skin, and contributes to premature aging, like wrinkles, fine lines, loss of skin elasticity and hydration. “Nearly everyone is exposed to UVB-induced photoaging at some level and minimal research exists on options for reducing it through nutritional supplementation,” said Brooke Alpert, RD and a leading skin nutrition expert. “This laboratory research study, along with prior studies in humans demonstrates that BioCell Collagen’s unique matrix of hydrolyzed collagen type II peptides, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid may be used to address common, visible signs of photoaging, and is a promising step forward. These findings are incredibly encouraging for anyone desiring healthier-looking skin, especially for those seeking an effective, safe, non-invasive option for their skin routine.” BioCell Collagen is a clinically tested branded dietary ingredient with nearly two decades of research, that promotes youthful-looking skin, active joints, and healthy connective tissues. The Study Conducted by an independent research team, the study evaluated the use of BioCell Collagen in hairless mice, which have skin absorption levels comparable to human skin. There were 40 hairless mice in the study, equally divided into four groups: a group receiving no UVB exposure and no supplement, a group receiving UVB exposure with no supplement; and two active groups receiving UVB and different dosages of the supplement. Over the course of 14 weeks, the intervention groups supplemented once daily with BioCell Collagen at 200 mg/kg (human equivalence to 1g daily) or 600 mg/kg (human equivalence to 3g daily). For UV exposure, each animal was exposed to UVB radiation (290-320 nm) three times per week. The skin was measured and graded to determine the efficacy of BioCell Collagen on measurements of wrinkles, transepidermal water loss, skin elasticity and collagen levels. BioCell Collagen significantly impacted skin-related changes commonly associated with UVB-induced photoaging(compared with non-supplemented controls), with supplementation found to reduce the negative effects of UVB on: The formation of wrinkles, including the number, area, length, and depth of wrinkles Skin elasticity Skin hyaluronic acid content Two things commonly attributed to UVB-induced skin aging: transepidermal water loss and matrix metalloproteinases enzyme content. These findings follow numerous published studies on the efficacy of BioCell Collagen and show how the dietary supplement is a safe and effective option for healthy skin and joint aging. Once-daily administration over 14 weeks was well-tolerated, with no reported side effects. Healthy Addition to Your Skin Health Routine “These findings are consistent with prior research on the efficacy of BioCell Collagen as a safe and effective component to a skin health routine,” said Suhail Ishaq, president of BioCell Technology which sponsored the study. “Photoaging effects nearly everyone and is responsible for a vast majority of visible skin damage. While BioCell Collagen cannot replace your sunscreen, this study is further evidence that BioCell Collagen can serve as a safe, easy-to-take, non-invasive addition to a skin care regimen. Pairing daily oral supplementation of BioCell Collagen with a quality topical sunscreen to prevent damage can be the foundation of a good year-round skin care routine.” Alpert points to BioCell as an accessible solution for Americans who are facing both new and seasonal changes to their usual grooming and skincare routines. Look for Products Supported by Research “As we head deeper into spring and toward summer, the UVB-rays that cause photoaging will again become a challenge for our skin health making the use of a quality topical sunscreen imperative,” said Alpert. “Even as we stay inside, practicing social distancing, we are faced with additional skin stressors, including dryness due to HVAC systems and issues related to increased screen time. This is a viable time for those seeking more subtle ways to support their skin health to introduce BioCell Collagen supplementation into a skin care regimen, along with a topical sunscreen.” “When seeking skin health solutions, look for products supported by research,” said Alpert. “The unique bioavailable matrix of BioCell Collagen is conducive to good absorption in the body, which means that you can actually get the benefits shown by research.” This article has been modified.
