Al Sears, MD, CNS – I want to share a shocking statistic with you… Around 80% of all the pharmaceuticals sold in America — both prescription and over-the-counter — are manufactured in China. Elsie has been a patient at the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging for years. So when she called me in tears, I told her to come in right away… Elsie was leaving on her dream vacation to Africa in less than a week. But she could barely stand up. Her lower back pain was so severe she didn’t even think she could handle the 19-hour flight from Miami to Kenya. Let alone the six-hour drive from the capital city of Nairobi to the Maasai Mara Reserve, where she was going on a week-long safari. Elsie was desperate for relief but didn’t want to manage the pain with prescription or over-the-counter muscle relaxants or painkillers. She was worried that the side effects of these drugs would ruin her trip. When she walked through the front door of the clinic, Elsie was hunched over and clutching her lower back. I brought her into the exam room, where we had our laser therapy set up. I’m a big believer in non-invasive low-level laser therapy. It works for both acute and chronic pain. It combats pain by stimulating cells to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. And studies back it up. In one study, 30 patients with chronic lower back pain were randomly divided into a red light laser group and a laser placebo group. Both groups underwent treatment three times a week for four weeks.1 The patients were evaluated throughout the study with both pain questionnaires and thermography. By the end of the study, the researchers wrote that the “scores of the Pain Disability Index and maximum pain intensity during day and night significantly reduced” in the patients who received laser therapy. Two additional studies of 151 people found that the relapse rate in patients who had laser therapy compared to a control group was significantly lower after a six-month follow-up evaluation.2 At the Sears Institute, I use different colored lasers to treat different issues. Here’s a quick look at what red, blue, and green lasers can treat… Red Reduces pain Strengthens immune system Increases mitochondria energy Stimulates blood flow Regenerates damaged tissue Improves circulation Reduces inflammation Blue Anti-inflammatory Speeds wound healing Relieves pain Boosts immune system Activates telomerase Releases nitric oxide Green Increases nitric oxide Improves blood flow Increases oxygen Reduces blood pressure Reduces pain/inflammation Boosts sexual function I get a lot of questions about how this therapy works. Here’s what I tell patients like Elsie… During the procedure, different wavelengths and outputs of low-level light are applied directly to the targeted area. The body tissue then absorbs the light. The red and near-infrared light causes a reaction, and the damaged cells respond with a physiological reaction that promotes regeneration. You will feel the laser when it touches your skin. However, the entire procedure is painless and noninvasive. You won’t feel any vibration or heat. Each treatment usually takes just a few minutes. I talked to Elsie once she came back from her trip. It was her dream vacation in every way – and the entire trip was pain-free. Stretch Away Pain Every Day While laser light therapy helped Elsie recover in time for her trip, I also gave her some simple stretches to do in order to keep herself loose and limber. You see, as we age, our flexibility decreases. Certain muscles shorten, and your ligaments get weaker, causing you to lose your range of motion. This can cause a host of back problems. One of the first things you should do is to make stretching a part of your daily routine. This stretch is one you can do before you even get out of bed: Sit up with your legs straight out. Slowly try bending forward to touch your toes. Hold for about 5 seconds and repeat 10 times. While still sitting up, turn your torso to the left and then to the right. Repeat 10 times. Lay back down. While lying flat on your back, bend your right knee, grab it with both hands and try bringing it up to your chest. Hold for a few seconds, and then release. Repeat with your left leg 10 times.

Dena Schmidt via NaturalHealth365 – Beets may not be high on your list of favorite foods, but word about their health benefits and nutrition is spreading. For instance, a new study published in the European Respiratory Journal found that drinking beetroot juice can significantly lower blood pressure in COPD patients. Another study published in the Hypertension Journal showed that beet juice is as effective as medications for lowering blood pressure and (best of all) without negative side effects. In fact, drinking beet juice – as part of a nitrate-rich diet – has also been linked with increased blood flow to the brain and better cognitive performance, according to a study published in the journal Nitric Oxide. Why beets should be part of your diet From disease prevention to sports performance, the benefits of beets are more than you can imagine. Here are 9 of the most compelling benefits of beet nutrition: 1. Rich in fiber and key nutrients Fiber is linked with gut health and a feeling of satiety that lasts. Beets’ nutrition also includes vitamin C, potassium, folate, and manganese. And, because of their nutrient content – beets can help to support organ, nerve and bone health as well as the immune system. 2. Increased energy and stamina Beets are loaded with healthy carbohydrates for energy. Studies have shown that drinking beet juice prior to a workout can extend an exercise session by 16 percent. As nitrates are turned into nitric oxide, the body’s oxygen “cost” is reduced during physical activity. 3. Regulates blood pressure Beet juice is a potent and effective natural way to lower blood pressure. Just one glass of beet juice drops systolic blood pressure by around 4 to 5 points. This is likely due to its nitric oxide content – which naturally relaxes and dilates the blood vessels, improving the flow of blood and lowering pressure. 4. Reduces inflammation The nutrient betaine in beets is known for protecting proteins, enzymes, and cells from environmental stress. This, in turn, helps to reduce inflammation, improve vascular risk factors, protect internal organs, and enhance internal performance. Of course, reduced inflammation will also provide greater protection against many chronic illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders and dementia. 5. Detoxification Beets contain betalin pigments, which aid in detoxification. Broken-down toxins essentially bind to the molecules and can then be excreted. In this way, beets purify both the blood and the liver. 6. Improved cardiovascular health The high fiber content of beets helps balance cholesterol levels by lowering triglycerides and LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol. This clears out the arteries and may help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis, and other heart issues. 7. Reduced cancer risk The phytonutrients that give beets and other produce their deep color are associated with antioxidant and anticancer benefits. In fact, research has shown that beetroot extract blocks tumor formation in numerous cancer types. 8. Respiratory issues The high content of vitamin C in beets also makes it effective in combating respiratory problems. It reduces the symptoms of asthma and also reduces the chances of lung issues, including cancer. 9. Eye health The beta-carotene, or vitamin A, in beets, also gives them a protective effect on the eyes. Eating beets lowers your risk of macular degeneration, eye strain, cataracts, and other eye diseases. Clearly, this unassuming root vegetable backs an incredible punch for good health. In addition to eating organic sliced beets and beet greens on salads and on sandwiches, consider also drinking beet juice regularly and mixing concentrated beet powder into smoothies.

Dr. Don Colbert – By now, you’ve surely heard that many human health ailments begin in the digestive tract. They can stem from digestive issues, and they can become more inflamed due to digestive inflammation. But, there is good news. The digestive tract, which holds the majority of the body’s immune components, can also fight these ailments if it’s healthy. In fact, you can fortify your digestive tract to fight better each day by taking probiotics. The Issue With Taking Probiotics Ready to start taking probiotics? Not so fast. There are also major issues with many probiotics supplements. In fact, some probiotics do not live through digestion, do not remain viable in the small intestine, do not adhere to the mucosa, and do not become an established working part of the native microbiota. They often contain little proven bacterial strains for human health. What a waste of time and money! It’s vital to know which probiotic strains actually help human health, and which formulations work best to deliver the probiotics into the gut while they are still viable. Amazing Probiotic Strains for Human Health Again, not all strains of probiotic bacteria are equal. Some bacteria strains can cause damage, some are neutral, and some are amazing allies to digestive health and whole body health. A few great probiotic strains you’ve maybe never heard of include: BACILLUS COAGULANS Bacillus Coagulans are naturally-occurring fermented bacteria found in sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt. Amazingly, studies have found that bacillus coagulans significantly improve symptoms of digestive ailments, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal distention, and constipation in those who suffer from them (1, 2). They also affect joints. One study analyzed B. coagulans‘ effect on inflammation in the joints of participants with arthritic symptoms. The researchers found that participants who took B. coagulans reported less disability, an improved ability to participate in daily activities like long walks, and reduced C-reactive protein (CRP, a marker of inflammation) (3). Lastly, B. coagulans may also support immune function. One small study found increased T cell production (immune cells) in participants responding to influenza A and adenovirus when taking B. coagulans. This displays an upregulation in immune system effectiveness (4). BACILLUS SUBTILIS Like B. coagulans, Bacillus subtilis strains may significantly decrease inflammation in the body. In fact, under inflammatory conditions, B. subtilis has significantly reduced the inflammatory protein production in the intestines in research. Data supports Bacillus-based probiotics, like B. Subtilis strains, can improve digestive health by strengthening intestinal barrier and limiting inflammatory responses (5). LACTOBACILLUS PLANTARUM (N13) Another amazing and effective probiotic strain is Lactobacillus plantarum. It is a widespread species of lactic acid bacteria, and it is commonly found in fermented plant products such as sauerkraut, pickles, brined olives, and Korean kimchi. Specifically, L. plantarum is an antioxidant probiotic that fights cell overgrowth, inflammatory responses, fat gain, and unhealthy glucose levels (6). What’s more, L. plantarum is able to produce B-group vitamins including riboflavin and folate in the human body (7). It also supports digestion by increasing absorption of minerals including iron and calcium (8, 9, 10). Lastly, L. plantarum has been found to improve diarrhea, including traveler’s diarrhea and antibiotic-associated diarrhea (11, 12). But L. plantarum doesn’t stop there. It can actually affect skin health and aging skin. In clinical trials, L. plantarum significantly increased the skin water content in the face and hands, and participants experienced a significant reduction in wrinkle depth and appearance in 12 weeks. What’s more, skin elasticity in the probiotic participants improved by 13.17% after 4 weeks and by 21.73% after 12 weeks (13). How? When taken as a probiotic, L. plantarum improves skin hydration, has anti-photoaging (sun) effects, and inhibits the degradation of collagen in human skin (14, 15, 16). Lastly, it improves skin appearance by alleviating symptoms of skin inflammation in humans (17). As if that wasn’t enough, many studies show that L. plantarum supports healthy cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and blood sugars. In one study, supplementation with it reduced total cholesterol by 13.6% after 12 weeks (18)! BIFIDOBACTERIUM BREVE (BBR60) Bifidobacterium breve is a beneficial bacteria found in human breast milk and the gastrointestinal tracts of infant and adult humans. As an individual ages, however, the total population of B. breve in their gut decreases (19). When taken as a supplement, B. breve can affect skin health by increasing skin hydration (20, 21) and reducing the appearance of skin damage from UV exposure (22, 23, 24). Next, B. breve may reduce eczema symptoms, skin inflammation (25), and allergic rhinitis by reducing the inflammatory response to allergens (26). Then, B. breve supports digestive health by promoting the viability of Bifidobacteria and the formation of normal intestinal flora, reducing severity of diarrhea, and alleviating abdominal pain and constipation, as shown in human and animal studies (27, 28, 29). BIFIDOBACTERIUM LACTIS Bifidobacterium Lactis is another probiotic found in the large intestine of humans and other mammals. This one’s likely on your radar; in fact, Bifidobacterium Lactis is one of the world’s most documented probiotics. B. lactis is extremely versatile and beneficial. In fact, it supports: Gut mucosa health Reduced pathogens Intestinal barrier function Immune function Researchers have found that B. Lactis can decrease gastrointestinal discomfort (30), improve oral health(31), support healthy weights (32), decrease antibiotic-related diarrhea (33), and improve immune response (34). More to Consider When Taking Probiotics Now you know. There’s more to it than just picking up a generic probiotic supplement at your grocer. Some strains really promote human health. What’s more, some probiotics formulations go beyond the strains of bacteria. They: Have been extensively studied to remain viable, incorporate into the microbiota, proliferate, and impact health in humans. Functionally improve the structure, communication, and health of gut cells. Support brain health by reducing inflammation and encouraging healthy brain-gut axis communication and interaction. Thrive in the intestines partly because they also contain prebiotic fiber such as Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and Glactoogosaccharides (GOS). Fight pathogens from spoiled foods, viruses and bacteria to promote year-round health. Ready to Start Taking Probiotics? As with all Divine Health supplements, Dr. Colbert has gone through the painstaking process of developing a probiotic supplement he believes will help people the most. It contains each of these bacteria strains, remains viable through digestion, and impacts human health throughout the body. Now, you can try it for yourself and buy Divine Health Biotics! If you are looking to support your gut health, skin health, brain health, and heart health, this is a great option for you. Bottom Line Don’t waste your time and money. If you are already taking probiotics, make sure they are up to par. If you are looking for one, check out the new Divine Health Biotics. It can make a huge difference in your health, from your gut to your brain to everywhere else, starting today! To read the original article click here.

Christine Ruggeri, CHHC via Dr. Axe – Artemisinin, a major active command in the Artemisia annua plant species, is one of the most commonly prescribed therapy in traditional Chinese medicine. It was first developed as a drug to treat malaria and has since become the standard treatment for the disease worldwide. Today, researchers are exploring its use as an alternative therapy for cancer treatments. Because it reacts with iron-rich cancer cells to produce free radicals, artemisinin works to attack specific cancer cells, while leaving normal cells unharmed. Although more research on the therapeutic is needed, the reports to date are promising. What Is Artemisinin? Artemisinin is a drug derived from Artemisia annua, an Asian plant also known as: sweet wormwood sweet Annie annual mugwort annual absinthe qing hao qinghaosu The plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for 2,000 years to threat fevers, headaches, bleeding and malaria. Today, it’s used to make therapeutic capsules, teas, pressed juice, extracts and powders. A. annua is grown in Asia, India, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in temperate regions of America, Australia, Africa and tropical regions. Artemisinin is the active constituent of A. annua, and it’s used as a drug to treat malaria and has been researched for its efficacy against other conditions, including osteoarthritis, Chagas disease and cancer. Cancer Research Research on artemisinin for cancer suggests that the constituent may work as an alternative therapy, but more clinical studies are still needed. What’s known so far is that artemisinin may help create cancer-killing free radicals in the body. It works similarly to fight cancer to how it fights malaria, by reacting with iron-rich cancer cells to produce free radicals that go on the attack. Some research even indicates that artemisinin is much more specific in targeting and killing certain cancer cells than other cancer treatments, which means that normal cells can survive with this method. Artemisinin derivatives, such as dimers, trimers and hybrids, are currently being researched and used as a potential therapeutic alternative to current chemotherapies to combat cancers such as leukemia. Recent studies show that its derivatives possess both in-vitro and in-vivo activities against various types of cancer. Its anti-cancer effects come from its ability to initiate apoptotic cell death, inhibit cancer proliferation, reduce metastatic growth and promote the formulation of new blood vessels. Research published in 2021 notes that artemisinin has shown therapeutic activity against leukemia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma cells. Artemisinin drugs have also exhibited good tolerance and few side effects when used in combination with standard chemotherapies. The “synergism” of flavonoids and artemisinin in cancer treatment has also been reported. Flavonoids have been shown to enhance the anti-cancer effects of artemisinins by increasing their bioavailability and half life values. These benefits have been reported in several cancer cell models, including on pancreatic, breast, colon and prostate cancers. Other Benefits In addition to the plant extract’s potential benefits for cancer treatment, it’s been used for thousands of years for other health conditions, including the following: 1. Used to Treat Malaria Artemisinin has proven to exert antimalarial effects, which are due to its free radical scavenging properties. The herbal drug reacts with the high levels of iron in the parasite and produces free radicals, which destroys the cell walls of the malaria. It has even proven to be effective against highly drug-resistant strains of the disease. 2. Reduces Inflammation The use of artemisinin against inflammatory-driver respiratory disorders has been investigated, and reports show that they attenuate inflammation by regulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. There’s evidence highlighting artemisinin’s effects against inflammatory conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease and osteoarthritis. 3. Has Antimicrobial and Antiviral Effects The secondary metabolites in Artemisia annua, including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and phenolic compounds, exhibit antimicrobial effects. There’s also recent research suggesting that A. annua extracts inhibit viral infections and can serve as a cost-effective therapeutic for fighting viruses. Although more research is needed, there are reports indicating that artemisinin may have the following benefits as well: Reduces cholesterol Controls seizures Fights obesity Fights diabetes Risks and Side Effects Research suggests that artemisinin is generally well-tolerated, but some people may experience side effects, including: nausea vomiting skin rash vertigo ringing in the ears digestive complaints tremors liver damage It should not be combined with certain medications. People with gastrointestinal disorders or ulcers should not take artemisinin or use products derived from A. annua. It should not be taken with anti-seizure medications, either. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use sweet wormwood unless doing so under the care of a health care provider. Supplements and Dosage Artemisinin supplements are available in many forms and can be used orally, intravenously or rectally. The sweet wormwood plant is also used to make teas, juices and extracts, which is used traditionally to treat malaria and reduce inflammation. The People’s Republic of China lists the daily dose of Artemisia annua for fever and malaria as 4.5 to nine grams of dried herb prepared as an infusion. This is the preparation that’s been used for clinical trials. For readymade supplements, doses vary depending on what it’s being used for. A specific dosage for optimal efficacy has not yet been established, but taking 400–800 milligrams daily is often recommended for reducing inflammation, fighting fever and malaria, and combating infections. This dose range has shown to be safe for six to 12 months, with no apparent artemisinin side effects. Conclusion Artemisia annua is a plant that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years for the treatment of fever, inflammation and infections. Artemisinin, one of the main constituents in the plant, is used in combination therapies for the treatment of malaria, and recent research indicates that it’s a useful tool for cancer treatment as well. Artemisinin supplements can be taken orally, intravenously and rectally in a clinical setting, under the care of a doctor. It’s known to be well-tolerated, but artemisinin side effects are possible and can include nausea, dizziness, skin rash, digestive issues and tremors. To read the original article click here.

Al Sears, MD, CNS – The biotech world is abuzz these days over proposed drugs to help you live longer. It sounds great… except for the drug part. After circumnavigating the globe seeking ancient natural cures, I’ve developed several ways to prolong your “health span”… the amount of time you can live a long, rich life free from chronic disease. And you don’t have to become a guinea pig for Big Pharma’s experimental drugs either. Increasingly, there’s a natural “longevity superfood” in the spotlight. People call it a plant but it’s really a fungus. I’m talking about health-boosting, medicinal mushrooms. Only when you assemble all the pieces of the mushroom longevity puzzle can you see the complete picture. And it’s stunning…. Live Long and Prosper With Medicinal Mushrooms Researchers are finally waking up to something I’ve been talking about for years — the far-reaching longevity benefits of mushrooms, including: Brain health – One study of 663 subjects in Singapore compared mushroom intake with the risk of developing cognitive impairment. Participants consuming mushrooms three or more times a week were 43% less likely to develop dementia.1 That’s because mushrooms are neurotropic, promoting the health of neurons.2 Inflammation – As my regular readers know, inflammation is an express train ride to accelerated aging. Mushrooms are packed with powerful anti-inflammatory compounds, including polysaccharides, phenolic and indolic compounds, mycosteroids, fatty acids, and carotenoids.3 They help you tamp down inflammation before it can spiral out of control. Anti-Mutagenic – Their cancer-fighting properties are legendary. My regular readers know I’m quite impressed with the cordyceps sinensis variety445445 in this regard. It’s shown a powerful ability to inhibit cancer growth in lung, colon, skin, and liver cells.4 One recent study found that eating just a tablespoon and a half of mushrooms led to a 45% reduction in cancer risk.5 That’s quite significant considering 4 in every 10 Americans develop cancer at some point during their lives.6 Mitochondria – Each cell in your body relies on minuscule power plants to provide energy called mitochondria. As you age, their production declines due to oxidative damage. Mushrooms provide the No. 1 most concentrated food source of a unique amino acid that functions as an antioxidant. Called ergothioneine, it scavenges free radicals with a vengeance to boost your mitochondrial energy production.7 Mushrooms are also impressive immune boosters… the only “vegetable” that contains vitamin D. No wonder they’re on the menu of anyone serious about keeping their golden years free of chronic disease. The only question is how best to get them, and that can be a bit tricky. Here’s why… An Ounce of Mushrooms Worth a Pound of Cure The surfaces of mushrooms are quite porous. They readily absorb any pollutants they’re exposed to during processing. So if it’s an extract, capsule, or powder, you have to be careful. My recommendation: Stay safe by making your own supply. It’s surprisingly easy, and my simple drying method boosts levels of vitamin D and other nutrients: First, find a reliable, local source of fresh mushrooms – shiitake, reishi, maitake, lion’s mane, and oyster are all good varieties. I buy from my local produce stand. Just spread the mushrooms out in the sun on some parchment paper or flat pieces of wood (I don’t recommend aluminum trays). Let them sit in the sun. Before nightfall, cover them. This prevents getting dew on them. Re-expose them to sun, and repeat the drying process the next day. You can also put them in a food dehydrator to ensure they’re thoroughly dried. Once they’re a bit crispy, use a blender or food processor to make your powder. You may need a fine mesh strainer to collect leftover chunks. Just give them a second run through your processor. Store your powder in an air-tight glass container. Keep it away from heat and light. Once a day, just toss a couple tablespoons in your coffee, smoothie, soups, or yogurt. Properly dried mushrooms will last for up to a year. So enjoy the taste, the convenience… and the longevity benefits.

Pennington Biomedical Research Center via Newswise – BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – While no medically recognized treatment exists for Long COVID, exercise may break the vicious cycle of inflammation that can lead to developing diabetes and depression months after a person recovers from the virus. “We know that Long COVID causes depression, and we know that it can increase blood glucose levels to the point where people develop diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition common among people with type 1 diabetes,” said Candida Rebello, Ph.D., a research scientist at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. “Exercise can help. Exercise takes care of the inflammation that leads to elevated blood glucose and the development and progression of diabetes and clinical depression.” It’s unclear how many people suffer from Long COVID. But estimates range from 15 percent to 80 percent of the people infected. Based on those figures, it’s possible that as many as 1 million of Louisiana’s residents suffer from Long COVID. Long COVID causes what the Centers for Disease Control describes as “a constellation of other debilitating symptoms” including brain fog, muscle pain, and fatigue that can last for months after a person recovers from the initial infection. “For example, a person may not get very sick from COVID-19, but six months later, long after the cough or fever is gone, they develop diabetes,’ Dr. Rebello said. One solution is exercise. Dr. Rebello and her co-authors describe their hypothesis in “Exercise as a Moderator of Persistent Neuroendocrine Symptoms of COVID-19,” published in the journal Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews. “You don’t have to run a mile or even walk a mile at a brisk pace,” Dr. Rebello said. “Walking slowly is also exercising. Ideally, you would do a 30-minute session of exercise. But if you can only do 15 minutes at a time, try to do two 15-minute sessions. If you can only walk 15 minutes once a day, do that. The important thing is to try. It doesn’t matter where you begin. You can gradually build up to the recommended level of exercise.” “We know that physical activity is a key component to a healthy life. This research shows that exercise can be used to break the chain reaction of inflammation that leads to high blood sugar levels, and then to the development or progression of type 2 diabetes,” said Pennington Biomedical Executive Director John Kirwan, Ph.D., who is also a co-author of the paper.

Karen Sanders via NaturalHealth365 – We all know that we are what we eat; it’s knowing what to eat that can prove difficult. Your diet is a critical factor in your long-term health, and the overwhelming number of options by which we’re surrounded makes it hard to know how to choose. Around every corner is another diet craze, another food to avoid, another one to add. It’s all pretty dizzying. Luckily, there is a simple solution to greater health and longevity. In fact, this one simple diet change can increase your lifespan by as much to 10 years, a recent study says. So what have you got to lose? Ditching the Western Diet Could Add 10 Years to Your Lifespan Definitions for the Western diet vary. Authors studying microbiota and immune response defined the Western diet as “high dietary intake of saturated fats and sucrose and low intake of fiber.” The last hundred years have drastically increased the amount of processed wheat, sugar, dairy, and meat worldwide. At the same time, fresh fruits and vegetables – especially of an organic nature – are harder to come by. As a result, in some places, food deserts prevail, making it difficult for families to pursue a healthy diet. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, of course. The first step is a simple substitution that anyone can do, such as: Tea and herbal drinks for soda and fruit juice Apples and bananas (available almost everywhere year-round) for snacks or treats Whole grains for processed ones Red and processed meat for fish or plant-based foods Spices and herbs for processed table salt Not Sure Where to Start? Here Is What to Add to Your Diet Immediately According to the authors of the diet and longevity study, it takes more than simply getting rid of bad foods. The next step is to add in better ones. Many people, for example, do not have a high ratio of nuts and seeds in their diets. Boosting your nut intake increases antioxidants to fight cancer-causing free radicals, ups anti-inflammatory compounds in your body, and adds loads of protein and good fats. Legumes are similarly beneficial, full of protein and collagen as well as antioxidants and fiber. This keeps your digestive tract moving, slows digestion (which leads to fewer cravings), and increases nutrient absorption. Lower Inflammation by Eating Foods Containing THESE Unique Plant Compounds Polyphenols are especially important to longevity. They fight cancer, raise antioxidant levels and reduce inflammation. The good news is, they’re hiding in plain sight. Researchers have identified more than 8,000 phenolic compounds in a wide variety of plants. Found in nuts, legumes, cereal, coffee, and tea, you can accrue more simply by subbing plant-based whole ingredients in traditional Western ones. Making Healthy Food Choices Does Not Have to Be Difficult You don’t necessarily have to get rid of everything you love. We all enjoy a slice of birthday cake now and again, after all. However, it’s important to minimize that “pick your poison” mentality, If you treat everything as for your health vs. for your enjoyment, you will continue to struggle with food choices. Instead of axing the Western diet as a whole, consider instituting rules regarding when you’ll eat those traditionally Western foods and stick to them. Making better choices will take you far in life, quite literally, for years to come.

Stephanie Woods via NaturalHealth365 – There was a time when humans were one with nature. We spent time outdoors, lived off the land, and played in the grass, under the broad, blue sky, running barefoot. But technology has steadily moved into our lives, removing us from the earth that once nourished us. Life is supposedly easier, but is it really? We go to the grocery store instead of growing our own food. We flip a light switch instead of kindling a fire. We stay at home and access the internet instead of going to the library and searching for real books we can hold in our hands. Yes, life is easier, but what have we lost? Henry David Thoreau asked the same question, and today we are even farther removed from nature. Grounding – also known as earthing – just might be the answer. What Exactly Is Grounding? In one sense, grounding means a return to basics. In another, it is the exposure to nature – the practice of making direct contact with bare feet or hands to the earth’s surface. Of course, a grounding system can also be used, but purists tend to favor the skin-to-earth contact that traditional earthing is known for. What is truly remarkable about the practice of grounding is that its benefits have been touted by people worldwide. It is a global practice recognized all over the world for its health benefits and the boost it gives to a person’s mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. What Does Science Say About Grounding? At this time, earthing is a very under-researched practice. The valid, substantive scientific studies on the benefits of grounding are somewhat sparse, but the research that is out there is mostly positive and shows it as a viable solution to support heart health, relieve chronic pain, reduce inflammation, ease muscle aches, and stabilize mood. A 2015 study by James L Oschman, Gaétan Chevalier, and Richard Brown found that earthing has an immediate and direct effect on the living matrix that is the central connector for living cells. The electrical conductivity is an integral part of the matrix and functions as a defense mechanism for the immune system, much like antioxidants do. The researchers conclude that grounding restores the body’s natural defenses. Another study published in 2013 explored the connection between heart health and grounding. Ten healthy participants used patches on the soles of their feet and palms of their hands to the ground. The researchers took blood measurements before the participants grounded and after to see how red blood cell fluidity changed. This is an important factor in heart health. The results showed that after earthing, the participants had significantly fewer red blood cell clumping, which benefits cardiovascular health. There are many impressive health benefits of grounding, including: Decreased pain Improved sleep Decreased anxious feelings Improved cortisol rhythm Decreased sadness Reduced inflammation Improved wound healing Mood stability Increased heart rate variability Decreased stress response More efficient and effective relaxation Reduced blood viscosity Grounding’s whole body benefits make it an attractive drug-free approach to overall wellness. Here Is How to Start Benefiting From This Practice It is very easy to start grounding and begin reaping its many benefits. Go barefoot Take off your shoes and walk on the grass, in the mud, or the sand. Let your skin touch the natural surface of the ground to allow for maximum absorption of grounding energy. Lie on the ground Lying in the grass or on the sand – or anywhere that is a natural surface of the earth – can have remarkable regenerative properties. As long as your skin is making contact with the earth, you reap the benefits. Submerse in water Water is another good vehicle for grounding. As with natural physical earth, seek out a natural body of water like a lake, brook, or the ocean, and wade in it. Use grounding equipment If you cannot ground yourself by connecting with the natural earth, you have alternatives. One way to ground when direct grounding is not possible is to use a metal rod that reaches the natural ground outside and is connected to your body via a wire. If the rod and wire method is not possible, other types of equipment are available – including special socks, mats, bands, sheets, patches, and blankets – developed specifically for this practice. What makes grounding so attractive is that you can start right away without investing any money, purchasing any equipment, or joining a gym or group. Instead, you just walk outside and begin. If you do this, for at least 45 minutes or more, you will experience a positive effect immediately.

University at Buffalo via Newswise – BUFFALO, N.Y. – Light therapy may accelerate the healing of skin damage from radiation therapy by up to 50%, according to a recent University at Buffalo-led study. The research found that photobiomodulation – a form of low-dose light therapy –lowered the severity of skin damage from radionecrosis (the breakdown of body tissue after radiation therapy), reduced inflammation, improved blood flow and helped wounds heal up to 19 days faster. The findings, published on Dec. 28 in Photonics, follow prior reports on the effectiveness of light therapy in improving the healing of burn wounds and in relieving pain from oral mucositis caused by radiation and chemotherapy. The research was led by Rodrigo Mosca, PhD, visiting fellow from the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, both in Brazil. Carlos Zeituni, PhD, professor at IPEN and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, is a senior author. “To our knowledge, this is the first report on the successful use of photobiomodulation therapy for brachytherapy,” said senior author Praveen Arany, DDS, PhD, assistant professor of oral biology in the UB School of Dental Medicine. “The results from this study support the progression to controlled human clinical studies to utilize this innovative therapy in managing the side effects from radiation cancer treatments.” Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy where a radiation source is implanted within the cancer tissue, exposing surrounding healthy tissue to lower doses of radiation than through teletherapy, a form which fires a beam of radiation through the skin to reach the tumor. Although brachytherapy has improved the precision and safety of cancer care, skin damage is still an unfortunate side effect. Similar to burn wounds, radionecrosis may cause inflammation and scarring and hinder blood flow. Current treatments to manage radionecrosis include routine wound care, pain medication and, in some cases, surgery. Previous research conducted by Arany’s lab found that photobiomodulation promotes healing by activating TGF‐beta 1, a protein that controls cell growth and division by stimulating various cells involved in healing, including fibroblasts (the main connective tissue cells of the body that play an important role in tissue repair) and macrophages (immune cells that lower inflammation, clean cell debris and fight infection). The new study, completed in an animal model, examined the effectiveness of both near-infrared and red LED light at improving the healing of skin damage during radiation therapy. Without photobiomodulation, wounds took an average of 61 days to heal. Using near-infrared light therapy, healing occurred within an average of 49 days. Healing occurred the fastest when using red light therapy, at an average of 42 days. “For over 40 years, photobiomodulation has been known to accelerate the healing of acute and chronic wounds, triggering cellular processes that control inflammation, pain signaling, and tissue regeneration and repair,” said Mosca. Research suggests that the effects of photobiomodulation does not extend to tumor cells, likely due to their perturbed metabolic and regulatory signaling, adds Arany.
