Understanding the cause of acid reflux Acid reflux is caused by the incomplete closure of the sphincter valve – located between the stomach and the esophagus. When this occurs, harsh stomach contents can splash back up across the delicate lining of the esophagus and the throat, nose, and other vulnerable tissues. Most commonly, acid reflux can cause pain in the center of the chest and, at times, an acidic taste in the mouth. While uncomfortable, the true concern is that – left untreated – symptoms of acid reflux will lead to esophageal cancer and other related changes down the road. The 2024-25 Protein Powder Category Report provides vital data regarding some concerning ingredients and potential contaminants that consumers should know before taking them. The results are eye-opening. An alarming 47% of the products tested exceeded the toxic metal safety threshold set forth by California Proposition 65. In simple terms, most of the protein supplements tested were potentially unsafe. Understanding proposition 65: Context for the findings To put the findings in context, you have to understand Proposition 65. This California law has a list of chemicals maintained by the state. These chemicals are believed to cause reproductive harm or cancer in humans. Businesses must place warning labels on foods containing these chemicals at levels that exceed the “safe” levels set forth by the law. The Proposition 65 list contains many synthetic and natural chemicals commonly found as ingredients or additives in solvents, dyes, household products, pesticides, drugs, and food. These chemicals may be used in manufacturing or as a byproduct of a chemical process, such as fumes or exhaust. Key findings from the study The study tested 160 products from 70 popular brands for 258 heavy metals and chemicals, focusing on heavy metals and bisphenols. The analysis yielded a total of 35,863 findings. 47% of all tested products exceeded state or federal safety regulations, including Proposition 65. 21% of all products contained more than double the acceptable levels of lead as defined by Proposition 65. Organic protein powders: 79% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. 41% contained over twice the acceptable levels of lead. Plant-based protein powders: 77% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. Whey protein powders: 28% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. Collagen protein powders: 26% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. Chocolate protein powders: 65% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. 29% contained over twice the acceptable levels of lead. These findings highlight significant safety concerns regarding heavy metal contamination in protein powders, particularly in organic, plant-based, and chocolate varieties. What should you look for in a protein powder? The analysis revealed that plant-based protein powders had the highest levels of contaminants, while whey-based protein powders showed the lowest levels. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>University of Arizona Health Sciences via News-Medical &#8211; A researcher at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson received a $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue his research into uncovering the mysteries of copper – specifically, how it can be harnessed to kill harmful bacteria and other microorganisms. &#8220;We started using copper tens of thousands of years ago to cut down on bacterial infections. People used to store their food in copper pots, which helped cut down on spoilage. Copper doorknobs have been shown to cut down on hospital-acquired infections. We&#8217;re still finding more things it can do.&#8221; -Michael D.L. Johnson, PhD, associate professor of immunobiology Johnson said he hopes one of these potential new uses could form the backbone of a next-generation antibiotic; however, to build a solid foundation for the pharmaceutical research, his lab aims to learn more about what makes copper toxic to bacteria in the first place. The research is being made possible by an R35 grant, which is reserved for scientists with outstanding research records and the potential to make major contributions to their fields. Using Streptococcus pneumoniae as a model organism, Johnson and his team will attempt to learn what makes bacterial cells vulnerable to copper. &#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty prominent pathogen. More than a million people die per year because of these bacteria,&#8221; he said, referring to the bacteria that can cause infections in the lungs, brain, nose and blood. &#8220;Our laboratory is interested in trying to figure out how it ticks. Our way of doing that is to understand how it gets its nutrition.&#8221; The human body uses minerals such as iron and calcium, which we get from our diets, to keep bodily processes running. Bacteria are no different in that they need minerals to function, but copper, which is essential in the human diet, can be toxic to bacteria. &#8220;There are certain minerals that bacteria don&#8217;t want in excess, and that&#8217;s where copper comes into play,&#8221; said Johnson, who is a member of the BIO5 Institute. &#8220;There are a lot of ways we can weaponize copper. We&#8217;re trying to study how our body uses copper as a mechanism to kill pathogens.&#8221; Johnson believes that by flooding bacteria&#8217;s environment with excess copper, researchers may be able to trick them into building essential proteins with the wrong materials. We&#8217;re trying to study how our body uses copper as a mechanism to kill pathogens &#8220;Copper can displace iron, manganese or other metals and inactivate the protein,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It would be like me trying to start my wife&#8217;s car with my key. It doesn&#8217;t work.&#8221; Johnson will build on his previous studies investigating how S. pneumoniae reacts to copper and complement parallel studies performed in his lab to learn more about copper as an antimicrobial. He said his goal is to untangle exactly what makes copper toxic to S. pneumoniae and use that information to draw conclusions about similar bacteria. &#8220;All bacteria are different, but there are some mission-critical systems that are the same from bacteria to bacteria. How they process some of these metals is almost identical,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What I&#8217;m studying can be applied to other bacteria, but first we need to understand the basic mechanism of how these things work.&#8221; Johnson said that while new antibiotics are slow to be developed and approved, antibiotic resistance is on the rise among pathogens, meaning that infections that were once easily cured with medicine could someday be deadly again. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers antibiotic resistance a danger to public health, with drug-resistant S. pneumoniae classified as a &#8220;serious threat.&#8221; &#8220;Bacteria are quite crafty. They will mutate to overcome antibiotics,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Our bodies have evolved to use copper to kill bacteria, and to this day, copper is still toxic. Postnatal vitamins are used to ensure that new moms get the vitamins and minerals they need after giving birth. While eating a healthy, balanced diet is key or maintaining proper macronutrients and micronutrient levels, supplementing with the most important vitamins and minerals can support breastfeeding and recovery after giving birth. What Are Postnatal Vitamins? Postnatal vitamins provide the nutrients that women need during the postpartum period, after giving birth. While it’s important for women to maintain healthy levels of all macro- and micronutrients during this period, some vitamins and minerals play an important role in hormone balance, breast milk supply and healthy energy levels. Typically, a prenatal vitamin can be continued during the months after birth as well. Those nutrients are also needed during breastfeeding and the recovery phase. In essence, these vitamins are beneficial for women during their reproductive years. Best Postnatal Vitamins to Take The nutrients that are most important during pregnancy are also needed after delivery, especially for women who are breastfeeding. Here’s a breakdown of the most important vitamins and minerals for the postnatal period: 1. Iron Iron is an important nutrient during pregnancy and after birth. It helps prevent anemia, which can be exacerbated when a woman loses blood during delivery. If you have low iron levels and you’re taking a pre- or postnatal multivitamin, make sure it includes iron. If not, you can take a separate iron supplement for six to eight weeks after delivery or until your health care provider recommends stopping. The daily recommended intake of iron for women is 18–27 milligrams. 2. Calcium Calcium is needed for mom’s and baby’s bones, so getting enough while breastfeeding is important. Calcium is also needed for the circulatory, muscular and nervous systems to function properly. The recommended daily intake of calcium for pregnant and breastfeeding women is 1,000 milligrams. 3. Vitamin D Research indicates that efforts should be made to optimize vitamin D status in mothers during and after pregnancy to support healthy levels in the infant and mom. Not only do infants need vitamin D for healthy bones and teeth, but the nutrient also impacts women’s brain function, immunity, hormones and mood. Breastfeeding women should get about 600 international units (or 15 micrograms) of vitamin D per day. 4. Choline Choline is a nutrient that plays a role in nerve function, muscle movement, metabolism, energy and several other important body processes. The recommended daily intake for women who are breastfeeding is 550 milligrams of choline. 5. DHA Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an essential fatty acid that needs to be consumed in food or supplement form to maintain healthy levels. It supports infant development, and studies suggest that there are long-term benefits for infants with higher levels of DHA, including faster development of behavioral functions. Deficits in DHA may lead to learning impairments among infants. Babies get DHA through breast milk, so mothers need to make sure they get enough of the fat in food or supplement form. Breastfeeding women need between 300–900 milligrams of combined DHA and EPA (another omega-3 fats acid) per day. How to Take/Dosage Postnatal vitamins are taken after birth, typically for as long as you’re breastfeeding and your body is recovering from pregnancy. Speak to your doctor or midwife for usage and dosage recommendations for your body and lifestyle specifically. Postnatal multivitamins are available online and at health food stores. You can find them in capsule, gummy and powder forms. Look for a reputable brand, ideally with a USDA Certified Organic label and a full list of ingredients and dosage. If you’re going for a multivitamin, make sure to choose one that includes DHA. When you no longer need postnatal vitamins, you can switch over to a standard multivitamin to ensure that you maintain healthy levels of micronutrients, especially if your diet is lacking in certain areas. Food Sources The best way to maintain healthy levels of vitamins and minerals is by eating a diet rich in colorful, fresh foods, just like the pregnancy diet. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Benedette Cuffari, M.Sc. via News-Medical &#8211; As one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide, coffee is largely consumed for its stimulating effects due to its caffeine concentration. Although previous studies touted coffee as a potential source of health problems, recent studies have found that coffee elicits a wide range of benefits to human health, particularly on the immune system. What Is the Chemical Composition of Coffee? When prepared as a beverage, coffee consists of volatile and non-volatile compounds, including carbohydrates, nitrogenous compounds, lipids, vitamins, minerals, phenolic compounds, and alkaloids. Notably, the concentration of certain compounds within coffee depends upon the amount of grounded coffee used to prepare the drink, the roasting and brewing methods, the quality of water used, and the incorporation of other ingredients into the final product. Caffeine One of the most notable chemicals in coffee is caffeine, which is chemically known as 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine. This alkaloid, naturally found in coffee beans, stimulates the central nervous system and has also been shown to elicit positive effects on long-term memory. Within a single cup of coffee, the caffeine content can range from 30 milligrams (mg) to as high as 350 mg. Like any other component of coffee, the caffeine concentration within a single cup of coffee depends upon the type of coffee beans used to prepare the drink, as well as both the brewing and roasting methods. Aside from its ability to improve focus, memory, and clarity upon consumption, the caffeine within coffee is also associated with several beneficial effects on the immune system. For example, mouse models have shown caffeine to reduce the levels of various inflammatory cytokines including interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-3, IL-13, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Similar effects have been observed in obese rats consuming caffeine, which was found to suppress the release of tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), IL-6, and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1). Chlorogenic Acid Black coffee and, to a greater extent, green coffee are rich in chlorogenic acid (CGA), a polyphenol that plays a primary role in the antioxidant activity of coffee. More specifically, CGA and its isomers capture superoxide anions of hydroxyl radicals, thereby reducing the extent and subsequent impact of damaging oxidative processes. By preventing oxidation and supporting any antioxidant deficiencies within the body, CGA also supports the immune system against the dangerous effective of ROS and other reactive chemicals. Within a single cup of coffee, the concentration of CGA can range from 70 to 350 mg. The concentration of CGA within a cup of coffee is also primarily dependent upon the method used to roast the coffee beans, as well as the amount of coffee consumed. Probiotic Delivery By definition, probiotics are live microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host when consumed in adequate amounts. Some of the primary health benefits associated with the consumption of probiotic species include enhanced immune and gut functions. One of the most common dietary sources of probiotics is dairy products; however, numerous efforts have been made to develop non-dairy sources of probiotic foods. Recently, researchers have looked towards coffee brews as a delivery source of probiotics. In particular, non-fermented probiotic coffee formulations have been successfully curated, all the while maintaining the viability of the probiotics against high temperatures normally encountered during the coffee brewing process. Comparatively, fermented probiotic coffees offer a much more significant health benefit than non-fermented products. In fact, researchers have hypothesized that a successfully fermented probiotic coffee could increase the bioavailability of various endogenous coffee components, including melanoidins and phenolic compounds. Protection Against Autoimmune Diseases In addition to caffeine and CGA, some of the other notable components of coffee that elicit various benefits to the immune system include kahweol, cafestol, and arabinogalactans. Within the innate immune system, these compounds allow coffee to contribute to the cytotoxicity of natural killer cells through their action on C-reactive proteins and toll-like receptors. By enhancing the activity of natural killer cells, coffee may also prevent their degeneration, thereby protecting coffee consumers against various autoimmune diseases. Comparatively, within the acquired immune system, the caffeine content within coffee potentially suppresses the proliferation of Th1 and Th2 cells. As a result, coffee can reduce the damage caused by the release of cytokines due to overactive T- and B-cells. The association between coffee consumption and the prevention of autoimmune diseases has been investigated in various types of studies. To this end, these studies have found that coffee intake can reduce the risk of Rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune thyroid disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, autoimmune liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Conclusions Over the past several years, various studies have demonstrated that the consumption of coffee has positive effects on the immune system. According to the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation, a shocking one out of every two women aged 50 and older (and one in four men in that age group) will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture at some point in their lives.  In fact, people with osteoporosis can experience broken bones from such seemingly innocuous activities as walking, standing, or sneezing.  To reduce your odds of a devastating fracture, experts advise consuming a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.  In addition, four nutrients, in particular, are believed to help strengthen bones.  To discover these important nutrients – and what each “brings to the table” – read on. Curcumin From Turmeric for Bone Health and Protect Against Fracture For over 4,000 years, turmeric has been prized by natural healers for its ability to reduce inflammation and fight infections.  Botanically known as Curcuma longa, turmeric owes much of its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties to its active constituent, curcumin.  In addition to its other health benefits, curcumin is believed to help improve low bone density. While clinical studies are lacking, promising early research conducted by investigators at the University of Arizona found that a turmeric extract helped to prevent the development of osteoclasts – specialized cells that facilitate the breakdown of bone – while protecting trabecular bone, the type of spine, and hip bone most susceptible to fracture in postmenopausal women. Turmeric is available in powdered, tincture, liquid, and capsule forms.  Look for a turmeric formulation standardized to contain at least 94 percent curcuminoids, which was found to be more effective than lower concentrations.  Before supplementing with turmeric, however, consult your integrative doctor. Thyme Helps to Manage Calcium Levels, Supporting Bone Health While many know this piquant herb only as a seasoning, thyme has been used by natural healers for centuries to treat a variety of ills.  Botanically known as Thymus vulgaris, thyme contains micronutrients that promote bone health – including calcium, vitamin K, magnesium, zinc, and manganese. In addition, thyme’s active constituent, thymol, is believed to inhibit the formation of osteoclasts.  One compelling study published in the International Journal of PharmTech Research suggested that 1,000 mg of thyme a day for six months improved bone mineral density in postmenopausal women more effectively than a calcium/vitamin D supplement.  The researchers noted that thyme helped to regulate calcium homeostasis, allowing it to have a protective effect on bone. By the way, studies have shown that thyme is even more effective in supporting bone mineral density when it is used with its close “cousins” sage and rosemary.  In other words, the classic folk ballad “Scarborough Fair,” with its reference to “parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme,” contains a recipe for better bone health … who knew?! Thyme can be used fresh or dried – and is also available in liquid extract and capsule form.  While amounts found in food are generally recognized as safe, check with your integrative doctor before supplementing. Don’t Despise the Dandelion!  Greens Provide a Jackpot of Bone-Strengthening Nutrition While homeowners and landscapers dread it for its ability to invade lawns, the humble dandelion – botanically known as Taraxacum officinale – is an overlooked and underrated source of both nutrition and health benefits.  Nutritionists at the famed Cleveland Clinic praise dandelion leaves as “probably the most nutritionally dense green you can eat, superior to even spinach and kale.” (And that’s saying a lot!) While dandelion greens are rich in bone-building vitamin K, calcium, and potassium, their real “superpower” is their high content of silicon, which has been found to improve bone matrix quality and facilitate bone mineralization. You can use tangy-tasting dandelion greens in mixed salads and sandwiches.  For a milder taste, soak them in cold, salted water for ten minutes, then boil until tender (about five minutes) and season with olive oil, garlic, and Parmesan cheese.  Dandelion supplements are also available, but get the “go-ahead” from your doctor before taking them. Over Half of All Americans Fail to Get Enough Magnesium, Which Supports Bone Health Multiple studies suggest that this essential mineral contributes to increased bone density and helps prevent the development of osteoporosis.  But unfortunately, most Americans don’t get enough of it in their diets.  According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, only 48 percent of Americans ingest enough magnesium from food to meet the estimated average requirement. You can increase your dietary intake of magnesium with green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.  Pumpkin seeds are the “high-ringers” in the seed world, with one ounce of roasted seeds contributing 156 mg.  And chia seeds, beans, potatoes, and fresh (raw) yogurt are also good sources.  The recommended daily dietary amount for magnesium for adults is 420 mg for men and 320 mg for women.  Magnesium supplements are also available – but check first with your integrative doctor. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Texas A&#38;M University via Newswise &#8211; Every species, from bacteria to humans, is capable of regeneration. Regeneration is mediated by the molecular processes that regulate gene expression to control tissue renewal, restoration and growth. A collaboration between researchers in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the College of Medicine at Texas A&#38;M University identifies the crucial role of minerals in regulating gene expression, thus controlling the number of proteins that a cell should make, thereby encouraging tissue regeneration and redefining cellular identity. This research paves the way for future studies to identify the role of specific minerals, as well as how they can be assembled to design the next generation of mineral medicine to heal damaged tissue. This study was recently published in Science Advances. Minerals are inorganic elements that play many vital roles, working interactively with vitamins, enzymes, hormones and other nutrient cofactors to regulate thousands of the body’s biological functions. Although several minerals have been shown to regulate gene expression and cellular activity, very little work has focused on understanding underlying molecular mechanisms. This engineering research group is led by Dr. Akhilesh Gaharwar, associate professor of biomedical engineering and Presidential Impact Fellow, in collaboration with Dr. Irtisha Singh, assistant professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Medicine at Texas A&#38;M and the co-corresponding author of the study where a new class of mineral-based nanoparticles has been introduced to direct human stem cells toward bone cells. These nanoparticles are known specifically as nanosilicates, and with them, the team is able to determine the role of minerals in regulating gene expression profiles to direct stem cell differentiation. These nanosilicates are disc-shaped mineral-nanoparticles 20-30 nanometers (nm) in diameter and 1-2 nm in thickness. These nanoparticles are highly biocompatible and are readily eaten up by cells. Once inside the cell body, these nanoparticles slowly dissolve into individual minerals such as silicon, magnesium and lithium. Nanosilicates dissociate into individual minerals inside the cells and turn “on” a set of key genes that result in information flow throughout the cells, known as signaling pathways. These signaling pathways are responsible for instructing the cells to take on specific functions, such as converting into another type of cells or starting the healing process by secreting tissue-specific proteins known as extracellular matrix. These extracellular matrices are composed of various proteins, including glycoproteins and proteoglycans that facilitate tissue healing and support tissue functions. Combining interdisciplinary techniques and biomedical engineering and genomics methods, the lead authors of this study, doctoral students Anna Brokesh and Lauren Cross, identify and characterize significant genes that are turned “on” and activated by different signaling pathways due to treatment with minerals. One of the major findings of this study is that minerals such as silicon, magnesium and lithium are involved in inducing endochondral ossification, a process by which stem cells are transformed into soft and hard tissues such as cartilage and bone in young humans. The Singh Laboratory, managed by Singh, leverages high-throughput functional assays and perturbations to dissect the functional regulatory programs in mammalian cells. In this study, they analyzed whole transcriptomic sequencing (RNA-seq) data to evaluate the effect of nanosilicates and ionic dissolution products on the gene expression profiles of stem cells. RNA-seq, a transcriptome-wide high throughput sequencing assay, provides an unbiased and holistic overview of the gene expression profiles to identify pathways that are perturbed by specific treatments. “There are a lot of people who want to understand how minerals impact the human body, but there is limited evidence to identify how they affect us on the cellular level,” Brokesh said. “Our study is one of the first studies to utilize unbiased transcriptome-wide sequencing to determine how mineral ions can direct stem cell fate.” The proposed approach addresses a long-standing challenge in current therapeutic approaches that utilize supraphysiological doses of growth factors to direct tissue research. Such a high dose of growth factors results in a range of complications, including uncontrolled tissue formation, inflammation and tumorigenesis, the production or formation of tumor cells. These adversely limit the usage of growth factors as a therapeutic agent in the field of regenerative medicine. Gaharwar said the impact of this work is far-reaching because understanding the effect of minerals to achieve desired regulation of cellular activity has a strong potential to open novel avenues for developing clinically relevant therapeutics for regenerative medicine, drug delivery and immunomodulation.
