University of South Florida via News-Medical – About 40 million adults in the United States regularly take statins to lower their cholesterol levels and reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke, according to American Heart Association data from 2020. However, many of them don’t stand to benefit from these drugs based on new research from David Diamond, a neuroscientist and cardiovascular disease researcher in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Florida. Diamond and his co-authors reviewed literature from medical trials involving patients taking either a statin or placebo. They then narrowed their review to look at study participants with elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL), the so-called “bad cholesterol,” which can be reduced with a statin. Some individuals with high LDL also had high triglycerides (fat in the blood) and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the “good cholesterol,” which put them at the highest risk of having a heart attack. But others with high LDL were very different. They had low triglycerides and high HDL, which meant they were healthier. People with optimal triglycerides and HDL levels typically exercise, have low blood pressure and low blood sugar, and are at a low risk of a heart attack. Diamond and his co-authors asked two questions: If people are at a low risk of a heart attack based on having optimal triglycerides and HDL, but they also have high LDL, does that raise their risk? Further, would these people benefit from lowering their LDL with a statin? Their findings, published in the journal Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity, showed LDL alone has “a very weak association” with heart disease and stroke. Their review went further, showing that when people with high LDL and optimal triglycerides and HDL were given a statin, there was no benefit. Diamond put the findings into a diet and lifestyle context. “People who are not overweight, have low blood sugar, exercise and are on a low-carb diet typically have optimal triglycerides and HDL, and sometimes they have high LDL. Our findings show that the people who have this healthy combination of diet and lifestyle, as well as high LDL, showed no benefit from taking a statin.” David Diamond, neuroscientist and cardiovascular disease researcher, Department of Psychology, University of South Florida The authors say their review also challenges the long-held contention that low-carb diets, which are often high in saturated (animal) fat, contribute to heart disease. That contention has persisted for nearly 50 years, dating to when cardiologist Robert Atkins was challenged about the potential dangers of his high-fat Atkins diet before a U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Nutrition and Human Needs in 1973. “High blood pressure, obesity, smoking and high blood sugar are the primary drivers of heart disease,” Diamond said. “Cholesterol is an innocent bystander, and saturated fat in the diet has been undeservedly demonized.” Diamond acknowledges that his research is controversial and has resulted in strong support, along with criticism from some within the medical community who have challenged his views on LDL and statins. He cautions that it is intended to raise awareness and should not be considered medical advice. Diamond’s interest in the association between LDL cholesterol and the risk of heart disease and stroke is personal. About 25 years ago, he was overweight and diagnosed with high triglycerides and low HDL, a potentially lethal combination. His doctor told him he was at high risk of developing heart disease and prescribed a statin to lower his LDL cholesterol. Instead of taking the medication, Diamond began his study of diet and heart disease. “I learned my problem was that I ate too many carbs – bread, potatoes and sugar,” Diamond said. “I’ve been able to get my weight under control and reduce my risk of heart disease with a low-carb diet. In the process, I’ve become aware of the obsession with linking cholesterol to heart disease.” Diamond has since published more than a dozen papers on flaws in the consensus that cholesterol causes heart disease. His latest paper included a review of the medical literature linking statins to numerous adverse effects, including the development of diabetes, damage to muscles and kidneys and impaired brain functioning. “Certain statins have been linked to cognitive impairment because they interfere with the brain’s ability to produce cholesterol, which is essential for the creation of new brain connections and to form memories,” Diamond said. According to Diamond, people who are overweight and have diabetes may benefit from taking a statin because, in addition to lowering LDL, the drugs block excess clotting and inflammation, two known risk factors of heart disease. However, for those who prefer to take medication rather than make diet and lifestyle changes, Diamond has a message: “People who take a statin might not appreciate that they’re a little less likely to have a heart attack or stroke, but the adverse effects of the statin may cause them harm.” Co-authors for the study were Brigham Young University Professor Ben Bikman and Paul Mason, a physician in New South Wales, Australia.

Chulalongkorn University via Newswise – Chula doctors advise people to gain a better understanding of the “high-fat content Keto weight loss diet” to find out the good effects, and the side effects. The emphasis should be on weight loss to combat diseases and long-term health benefits with a balanced and moderate diet. Weight loss isn’t only about maintaining the desired figure and physical beauty. It is also a way to fight certain diseases and achieve good health. Nowadays there are several methods of dieting to achieve weight loss, most of them emphasizing the importance of consuming vegetables and fish while avoiding fatty food. There is, however, another method known as the Ketogenic diet which emphasizes “fat” as the mainstay in all meals consumed. According to Assistant Professor Patchaya Boonchaya-anant, M.D. Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the Thai Red Cross Society, “The key to a Ketogenic diet is weight reduction which plays a part in health care and treatment of such diseases as obesity and certain types of diabetes which require patients to have their weight under control.” She also provides advice on how to follow the Keto diet correctly to achieve positive results both in terms of health and bodyweight reduction. What is the Keto diet? Keto or the Ketogenic is a low carbohydrate and sugar diet and focuses instead on the consumption of “fat” and protein. Asst. Prof. Dr. Patchaya explains the premises of the Keto diet saying that “Carbohydrate foods like wheat and rice are digested and become glucose which is the main source of energy for the body. When we consume fewer carbs, the body will turn to the stored fat as its primary fuel and turn that into Ketone Bodies – hence the name Keto.” How to follow the Keto diet for effective weight loss The Keto diet for weight loss places emphasis mainly on fat and protein intake and reduces the proportion of carbohydrate consumption such as wheat, rice, and sugar to only 5% or 20-50 grams per day or not having any carbs at all in a meal. This leads to Ketosis which is when the body consumes body fat as its main source of energy. According to Dr. Pitchaya, carbs and proteins make you feel full for a longer period while Ketone Bodies reduce the appetite for food and help to control the level of calories being consumed which plays an important part in reducing body weight. What are the healthy fats in the Keto diet? Dr. Patchaya explains that even if the principles of the Keto diet are based on fat consumption, not all types of fats are healthy. “Even if the Keto diet is about eating fats, this doesn’t mean one can eat fatty or fried food like bacon that is full of large quantities of fat. If you choose to follow the Keto diet, it is important to choose healthy fats too” she cautions us. Fats in food can be classified into two types: Unsaturated fats or healthy fats Unsaturated fats or healthy fats are mostly found in vegetables and fatty fish like sea fish or salmon, avocado, olive oil, sunflower oil, soybeans, or sesame oil. Saturated fats Saturated fats contain fats that are both healthy and unhealthy and are mostly found in meat, lard, chicken, yogurt, butter, cheese, coconut milk, coconut oil, and palm oil, for example. Both types of fat are necessary and beneficial for the body but if one consumes too many saturated fats it can be harmful leading to high cholesterol levels, the danger of blood clots, strokes, and heart disease. Aside from the choice of fat consumption, Keto diet followers must also take caution in the types of fruits and vegetables they consume and void those with high carb and sugar levels or using sugar in their food which could lead to the body not achieving Ketosis. In such cases, weight loss can instead be replaced by weight and fat gain. What are some of the side effects of the Keto diet? A Keto diet for health and weight loss may not be suitable for everyone, Dr. Patchaya cautions. “If you are healthy, do not suffer from congenital diseases, and are not pregnant you can follow the Keto diet. If you do have health concerns, you need to consult your doctor first since certain diseases or medications you are taking can be harmful when you go on the Keto diet.” The Keto diet involves a very specific way of eating. It isn’t varied and reduces certain types of nutrients. If you do not pay close attention, it can cause several types of side effects such as Keto Flu: When the body achieves Ketosis you might experience flu-like symptoms with fever, head and body aches, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue. Most of the time, these symptoms will gradually disappear but if they persist for more than two weeks you should see your doctor. Nutrient deficiency: A Keto diet requires you to reduce the quantities of certain types of food and this might cause the body to receive inadequate amounts of certain nutrients such as fibers or vitamins that could be a cause of some other subsequent health problems. Constipation, dehydration, and mineral deficiency: The body expunges Ketone bodies along with urination leading to the loss of fluids putting you at risk of dehydration and mineral deficiency. Low levels of carbohydrate consumption will result in the body receiving inadequate fiber causing constipation. Constant thirst: is often found since the body expunges fluids and this causes Keto diet followers to feel constantly thirsty. Frequent sips of water are essential. Brain fatigue: brain fatigue, shortness of memory, and lack of concentration are found, though infrequently. Oily skin and acne: Consumption of certain types of fats can lead to skin irritation which might cause acne. Yoyo effect when the Keto diet is halted The Keto diet brings about rapid weight loss with less withdrawal symptoms than other types of diets. However, once the Keto diet is halted and the person resumes their previous way of life or consumes meals that are not a full Keto diet they might experience weight gain known as the Yoyo effect. The Keto diet is a fast and effective way to achieve weight loss but one might encounter some of the side effects mentioned. As of now, we still don’t have any clear data as to the impacts of the keto diet on one’s health in the long run. For this reason, when the desired weight loss is achieved one should resume a more varied and balanced diet for the long-term benefits of our health. Dr. Patchaya ended by telling us that “consuming the five groups of food in adequate quantities for the body may be a slower way to lose weight but should certainly yield positive effects in the long run.” To read the original article click here.

Dr. Don Colbert – If you’re looking to support your immune system and stick to a low-carb diet, you’re in luck. There are many low-carb Keto Zone® foods that support your immune system. In fact, while refined starches and sugar actually inhibit immune function, many healthy low-carbohydrate fats, proteins, and vegetables support it. Here is our Top 15 List! 15 Simple Superfoods That Support Your Immune System 1. Anti-Inflammatory Spices i.e. Ginger and Turmeric Looking for a strong anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting punch? Ginger and Turmeric are potent spices with anti-inflammatory components. In fact, the main compound in turmeric, curcumin, can normalize inflammation, joint pain, and provide a plethora of health benefits. What’s more, ginger does many of the same things. It promotes whole-body health, supports the immune system, reducing inflammatory and pain responses with its strong antioxidants. Why is reducing inflammatory responses important in supporting your immune system? Inflammation directly affects the immune system by changing the course of hormones and impacting the immune response (1). 2. Fish Oils and Omega-3 Sources Like anti-inflammatory spices, omega-3 fats from fish and seafood are foods that support your immune system. In fact, they are some of the most potent compounds to reduce inflammatory hormone production. It’s vital to have a good ratio of dietary omega-3 fats compared to omega-6 fats. Both are needed for human health, but modern diets are far too high in omega-6 foods (mostly due to processed foods), and too low in omega-3s from fish and seafood, seeds, nuts, and more. Great choices for omega3 fatsare salmon, halibut, and tuna. 3. MCT Oil Powder While it works differently than omega3 fats, the medium-chain triglycerides in MCT Oil Powder also reduce inflammatory reactions. In fact, studies have shown that MCT oil directly reduces the response of C-reactive protein (a marker for inflammation) (2). 4. High Antioxidants Fruits and Vegetables Antioxidants are also vital compounds in foods that support your immune system. Antioxidants fight free radicals that damage all cells and systems, including the immune system, reduce inflammation, and support cellular detoxification. For example, two high-antioxidant superfoods found in Divine Health Fermented Green Supremefood® and Organic Red Supremefood® that support the immune system in this way are beets, spirulina, and wheatgrass (3, 4, 5, 6). Great choices include berries, asparagus, greens, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and more. 5. Oleocanthal Oleocanthal is a special compound isolated from high-quality Greek olive oils. While it’s not easy to find it in most commercial olive oils, it can be consumed in Dr. Colbert’s Oleocanthal (Powerful Antioxidant Concentrated from High-Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil). In fact, it contains disease-fighting antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and compounds that support heart health. Oleocanthal is so strong it reduces inflammation in similar strength to some medications, like ibuprofen (4). Additionally, it provides both antibacterial and antiviral action (5). Oleocanthal is a compound that absolutely supports your immune system. 6. Avocados Avocados are another anti-inflammatory food. It has fats called phytosterols. They are known to combat the inflammation associated with arthritis. Avocados also contain polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFAs), which are also potent anti-inflammatories. Lastly, avocado’s oleic acid supports digestive tract health to directly boost the immune system. 7. Proteins from Eggs, Meats and More While many people consume more protein than they need, it is still a vital macronutrient for the immune system. In fact, when people suffer from protein malnutrition, they are typically unable to fight diseases from bacteria or viruses. The immune system, hormones, cellular growth and repair, and other systems all rely on adequate protein. 8. Collagen and Bone Broth If you’ve been told to eat chicken noodle soup when you’re sick, it’s mostly for the bone broth. The collagen in bone broth and Keto Zone Collagen Powder support the immune system by: Providing amino acids and proteins Fortifying the cells in the digestive tract Reducing inflammation 9. Natural and Supplemental Probiotics One very important step to support your immune system is to support your gut. The cells in the digestive tract and the healthy bacteria that live there are vital to the immune system and nourishment of the whole body. There are many ways to get probiotics, or healthy bacteria, in low-carbs foods. These include probiotics found in Keto Zone Collagen Powder, Organic Green and Red Supremefood®, Keto Zone Living Milled Chia with Probiotics, plain yogurt, kimchi, kombucha and more. By adding healthy bacteria to your diet, you can support your immune system (8). 10. Garlic and Onions Garlic is a wonderful food to support your immune system. Garlic’s compounds fight viruses and bacterias while supporting cellular detox. Studies show that garlic may be effective in supporting natural immune functions against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria (9) and strong viruses. Additionally, onions support your immune system with antioxidants, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer compounds. 11. Lemons and Lemon Juice Vitamin C is one of our most-studied and well-known antioxidants. Lemons contain vitamin C plus antibacterial components effective throughout the mouth and intestines. 12. Black Pepper, Cinnamon, and Cloves Setting in your spice cupboard are incredibly strong foods that support your immune system (in addition to turmeric and ginger). These include: Black peppercorns support your immune system with potent antioxidants like piperine and anti-inflammatory compounds (10. Cinnamon is not only known for being anti-inflammatory, but it’s cinnamaldehyde can also fight infections directly. It inhibits Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, and Helicobacter pylori. What’s more, it can fight tooth decay and supports the immune response to infection. Cloves, like cinnamon, are a spice that supports immune health, fights bacteria, and fights free radicals. 13. Cauliflower and Broccoli Cauliflower and broccoli are amazing vegetables. In addition to antioxidants that fight oxidative stress, their nutrients specifically support cellular detoxification to keep cells healthy and thriving. This includes both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of cellular detoxification. 14. Apple Cider Vinegar Organic apple cider vinegar is an ingredient in many folk medicine cures. It is known to fight both bacterial and viral infections, yeasts, and more. Importantly, you should never drink it straight. Always dilute to just 1-2 tablespoons per 8 ounces liquid to protect your esophagus. 15. Water, Green Tea, and Black Tea Green and black tea are packed full of antioxidants that fight free radicals, fight bacteria, and support your immune system. In fact, their specific nutrients fight microbes in the mouth. And water? Not only is it necessary for life, but it’s also necessary for the immune system. Especially during times of viral outbreak, it’s important to stay hydrated and keep your mouths and airways moist. Bonus: Introducing DR. COLBERT’S IMMUNE SUPPORT!

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – Have you heard about the keto diet? It’s possibly the best diet for weight loss, and it can even reverse insulin resistance and reduce cardiovascular risk factors, according to recent research. No wonder more and more people are starting to go “keto.” My keto smoothie is an easy way to get started. It includes protein foods and healthy fats, while being very low in carbohydrates. All of the ingredients in this smoothie are nutritious, heart healthy and keto-friendly — plus, they’re delicious! What Does “Going Keto” Mean? “Going keto” means putting your body into a state of ketosis, which is a metabolic state that occurs when most of the body’s energy comes from ketone bodies in the blood, rather than from glucose (or sugar). On the keto diet, you are tricking your body into thinking it’s fasting by eliminating glucose that is found in carbohydrate foods. Your body begins burning fat for energy rather than carbohydrates, so after going keto, most people lose excess body fat rapidly, even when consuming lots of fats and adequate calories through their diet. The ketogenic diet, like any other low-carb diet, works through the elimination of glucose. Our bodies normally run on glucose for energy, but once glucose is no longer available from food sources, we begin to burn stored fat for energy instead. This process will not only help you to shed those extra pounds, but it also helps to control the release of hormones like insulin, which plays a role in the development of diabetes and other health problems. Nutrition Facts One serving of this keto smoothie recipe using cacao powder and without toppings contains the following, including only 6.1 net carbs (total carb grams minus fiber grams): 394.5 calories 40.1 grams fat 11.64 grams carbohydrates 5.5 grams fiber 3.68 grams protein 2.52 grams sugar 22 milligrams sodium 189.5 milligrams magnesium (45.1 percent DV) 6.85 milligrams iron (38.1 percent DV) 328.5 milligrams phosphorus (26.3 percent DV) 2.45 milligrams vitamin E (16.3 percent DV) 2.49 milligrams niacin (15.5 percent DV) 0.17 milligrams thiamin (14.2 percent DV) 0.16 milligrams riboflavin (12.3 percent DV) 36 micrograms folate (9 percent DV) 96 milligrams calcium (7.4 percent DV) 0.73 milligrams zinc (6.6 percent DV) 229 milligrams potassium (4.9 percent DV) 0.073 milligrams vitamin B6 (4.3 percent DV) 2.5 milligrams vitamin C (2.8 percent DV) How to Make A Keto Smoothie A keto smoothie is made up of healthy fats and protein, all foods that are naturally low in carbohydrates. Using a high-powered blender, add in these heart-healthy, keto diet–friendly foods. My keto smoothie recipe starts with 1 to 1¼ cups of full-fat coconut milk as the base. Coconut milk contains a beneficial fat called lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that’s easily absorbed and used by the body for energy. It serves as a great keto diet food. Next add in 1 tablespoon of chia seeds (soaked in 3 tablespoons of water for 10 minutes), which contain essential fatty acids, plus vitamins A, B, E and D and minerals including iron, magnesium, niacin and thiamine. And then add 1 tablespoons of your favorite nut butter to the mix, whether it’s almond butter or even sunflower seed butter. (I recommend that you avoid peanut butter.) For the next ingredient for this keto smoothie, you have a choice of either 2 teaspoons of cacao nibs, cacao powder or cocoa powder, or 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder. Protein powder made from bone broth is packed with protein, low in carbs and low in sugar. You can get the benefits of bone broth easily by adding it to your keto smoothie. Cacao nibs or powder is also healthful and packed with nutrients that fuel the body. The last two ingredients for my keto smoothie are ½ frozen avocado and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Adding avocado to this smoothie will give it a delicious creamy texture and its an excellent source of healthy fats, which is especially important when you’re going keto. Now all you have to do is blend the ingredients until they are well-combined, adding water if necessary, and you’re done! If you want to add some bulk to the texture of your keto smoothie, or if you don’t have a frozen avocado on hand, add in some ice, too. Top your keto smoothie with cacao nibs and cinnamon, and enjoy!

Dr. Don Colbert – Being a mom is a wonderful journey. From being a young mom with a young family to middle age and senior years, moms need energy, a clear head, good health, and convenient choices. They do a lot. Typically, their energy is spent on others. Keto Zone helps moms stay healthy throughout life, and focus on themselves. If you’re a mom or know one, you know moms deserve the best. Keto Zone is here for moms! Keto Zone Helps Moms Stay Healthy — Starting With Young If there’s one thing that summarizes a young mom’s life, it’s feeling busy. Having a baby, toddlers, small children and school-aged kids can feel overwhelming. Oftentimes, young moms put their own health, fitness, and well-being on the back burner while taking care of a young family. Thankfully, the Keto Zone Diet and Keto Zone Shakes contain great nutrients for overall health and a healthy weight, and they can be incredibly convenient for busy moms. Primarily, the Keto Zone is based on healthy fats. The Keto Zone diet and Keto Zone Shake contains MCT oil powder and avocado oil powder. Both are great for health and lasting energy. Keto Zone’s healthy fats and nutrients specifically: Promote weight loss while keeping you feeling full. In fact, a high-fat diet helps you stay satisfied and satiated even when losing weight (1). Target abdominal fat. Many moms struggle with losing stubborn abdominal fat. Keto Zone Shakes’ fats promote abdominal fat loss, especially compared to high-carbohydrate diets. It will improve whole-body health and can reduce the risk of chronic disease (2, 3). Provide the substrates for ketosis. If you are using Keto Zone as a diet and lifestyle, you need healthy fats to enter the Keto Zones. The fats in the Keto Zone Shake are perfect for ketosis and also work as brain fuel for clarity, focus, and improved brain health (4). Utilize fibers instead of refined carbohydrates. In fact, each serving of Keto Zone Shake include 8 grams of fiber! These fibers are derived from sweet potato fiber and chicory root, a fructooligosaccharide (FOS). Fructooligosaccharides are very important in the body and support healthy bacteria colonies in the gut, which play a role in whole-body health and immune function (5, 6, 7). Is high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. These compounds fight free radicals that damage and age our cells, and reduce inflammation associated with chronic disease. Contains moderate amounts of protein. Protein helps young moms rebuild and restore cells. It also promotes hormone balance and overall health. If you’re considering a healthy diet as a young mom, treat yourself to Keto Zone. The overall diet, which is detailed in the Keto Zone Diet Book, and Keto Zone Shakes, can make it easy to take care of your health each day. Keto Zone Helps Moms Stay Healthy Throughout Middle Age As a mom enters middle age, she may want to stay healthy, be full of energy, age beautifully, and feel completely clear-headed. Keto Zone helps moms stay healthy through middle age. In addition to providing all the nutrients and health benefits listed above for young mom, Keto Zone is: Anti-Aging: It’s high use of healthy oils and fats, such as olive oil, targets the challenges of aging. Incredibly, more than 200 different chemical compounds have been detected in olive oil such as sterols, carotenoids, triterpenic alcohols, and phenolic compounds. In addition to oleic acid, olive oil’s other minor nutrients, like vitamin E and polyphenols, can alter and improve gene expression, pathways, and more (8). This means beautiful healthy skin and young cells. Energizing: The Keto Zone Diet and Shakes provide amazing energy by utilizing ketones. This energy is not like the ups and downs associated with a high-carbohydrate diet, but steady, long-lasting energy. Clear and focused: One amazing aspect of ketones is that they help provide your brain with energy. Most Keto Zone dieters report feeling clear-headed, focused, and on-task. Ketones are amazingly beneficial to brain health. Keto Zone Helps Moms Stay Healthy Through Menopause and Senior Years One hallmark of menopause is a difficulty in maintaining a healthy weight. Unfortunately, many women report difficulty losing weight, and an increase in abdominal fat. One issue is that women experience a lesser ability to deal with carbohydrates. Blood sugars and insulin levels often increase. Keto Zone can help. Just like in younger years, Keto Zone promotes abdominal fat loss. Since it contains minimal carbohydrates, it can help moms sail through menopause without weight gain. What’s more, Keto Zone Hormone Zone and Thyroid Zone support a mom’s changing hormone levels. This can be a huge help as estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormones change throughout the lifecycle. Bottom Line It’s almost Mother’s Day. This year, treat yourself or another mom you know to Keto Zone. You can start with the Keto Zone Diet Book, Keto Zone Shakes, or the 21-Day Free Keto Zone Challenge. You’ll find health, energy, and focus. It’s one of the greatest gifts in life: health. Keto Zone helps moms stay healthy! To read the original article click here.
