Sara Middleton via NaturalHealth365 – In a reversal few saw coming but most understand, officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) has finally condemned the global economic shutdowns. Far from saving people’s lives, these shutdowns have in their estimation caused “irreparable damage” to citizens of the world – especially the most vulnerable among us – and have sparked a concerning upward trend of poverty and mental health issues. The concern is so widespread and severe that epidemiologists from Stanford University, Oxford University, and Harvard University have put together a petition calling to finally end the unethical madness of COVID lockdowns. WHO ADMITS: COVID lockdowns made “poor people an awful lot poorer” and may double the rates of malnutrition In an interview with British media outlet The Spectator, Dr. David Nabarro of the WHO admitted that “we…do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of [the novel coronavirus pandemic].” Are you surprised, Governor Newsom and Governor Cuomo?! According to Dr. Nabarro, an unavoidable consequence of the lockdown has been “making poor people an awful lot poorer….It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.” He cites economic devastation in regions like the Caribbean as examples of the profound mess lockdowns and travel restrictions have caused. Mental health consequences of these ill-advised and protracted shutdowns cannot be ignored, either. For example, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in August that there were “considerably elevated adverse mental health conditions associated with COVID-19,” with fully 40% of American adults struggling with worsening mental health, increased thoughts of suicide, and increased use of drugs and alcohol. “The only time we believe a lockdown is justified,” Dr. Nabarro continued in The Spectator, “is to buy you time to reorganise, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.” And as battered as the WHO’s reputation may be, their concerns are fully supported by a growing collection of international experts from the fields of epidemiology, finance, public health, psychiatry, and more. “The Great Barrington Declaration” makes these key points about ending the economic shutdowns … can we call on our local and national leaders to pay attention? Spearheaded by Ivy league professors, a petition called the Great Barrington Declaration is making its rounds and currently features over 40,000 signatures. It calls to end the current lockdown policies which “are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health.” Here are a few key points from the petition: The lockdowns are contributing to “worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health,” among other issues – the effects of which will be felt for years to come COVID-19 is less dangerous for children than the seasonal flu (which the CDC isn’t even surveilling right now, according to their website); it follows that keeping kids out of school is considered a “grave injustice” Indeed, continuing the lockdown for everyone is unconscionable – extracurricular activities, schools, restaurants, and businesses should be open and “those who are not vulnerable” (that is, anyone who is not old or chronically ill) should be “immediately” allowed to “resume life as normal“ Lastly, say what you will about “herd immunity,” but an important point should not be lost here: this cohort of the world’s leading epidemiologists and physicians admit that building of coronavirus immunity throughout the population is “notdependent” on a vaccine. Therefore, holding the world hostage until a vaccine is available is simply not the way to minimize deaths and social harm. Time will tell when world leaders will finally pay attention and heed these dire warnings.

News Staff via CBN News – Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has paused a late-stage study for a potential COVID-19 vaccine while the company investigates whether an “unexplained illness” with one of the study’s participants is related to the shot. The company said in a statement that illnesses, accidents, and other so-called adverse events “are an expected part of any clinical study, especially large studies.” Additionally, physicians and a safety monitoring panel are working to determine what could have caused the illness. The pause encompasses all trials, including a large phase-3 trial that launched in September and focused on recruiting 60,000 people in the US and several other countries. J&J Chief Financial Officer Joseph Wolk said on Tuesday the company remains optimistic the delay will conclude after a few days, but the illness is “still under investigation, and we’re going to let that process play out.” Wolk added, “Right now it’s in the hands of the independent drug-safety monitoring board.” CBN News previously reported on another COVID-19 vaccine that was placed on hold last month after a volunteer came down with an unexplained illness. AstraZeneca, the company developing the vaccine with Oxford University in the United Kingdom, instructed researchers to pause the vaccine trial as a precautionary measure. J&J’s CFO explained the potential for obstacles and setbacks to arise during these types of trials. “This is the largest vaccine study that’s out there,” Wolk said. “It’s endeavoring to study 60,000 patients. When you have a study of that size, it’s not uncommon to see unexpected illnesses within the population. That’s for any drug across any therapeutic area. This is something that’s not foreign in the development process.” WHO Warns Against Lockdowns Meanwhile, World Health Organization (WHO) officials are now warning against lockdowns as a way to try to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the organization’s health emergencies program explained the significance of preventing another widespread lockdown. “What we want to try and avoid, and sometimes it’s unavoidable – we accept that – but what we want to try and avoid are these massive lockdowns that are so punishing to communities, to society and to everything else,” he said. “So, we don’t want to flip from no cases, everything’s open, a few cases, everything shuts down again, because that’s exactly the sort of scenario that we want to try and avoid.” Ryan added that instead of lockdowns, countries should focus on surveillance, tracking, education, and other measures.

Brian Blum via Israel21c – As many countries confront a resurgence of Covid-19 infection, Israel has chosen the lockdown direction. Parts of Australia – Melbourne in particular – have been under coronavirus restrictions since the beginning of August. Regions of France, Spain and the UK have reintroduced partial lockdowns, as well. New research from Tel Aviv University based on mobility data collected from iPhone users and published this week in preprint form on the website medRxiv argues that rigorous lockdowns may not save lives. The authors say the most important factor for decreasing mortality (number of deaths) –as opposed to morbidity, the number of infections — is how quickly social-distancing measures are implemented. They found no statistical correlation between the severity of a lockdown and the number of Covid-19 fatalities in the country. “We would have expected to see fewer Covid-19 fatalities in countries with a tighter lockdown, but the data reveals that this is not the case,” the researchers explain. “Mobility data indicates that a hermetic lockdown, in which everyone must stay at home, is unnecessary,” said Prof. Tal Pupko, head of the Shmunis School of Biomedicine and Cancer Research, and Prof. Itay Mayrose of TAU’s Faculty of Life Sciences. “What we need is fast implementation of social distancing.” Pupko and Mayrose looked at iPhone data showing the extent of mobility — the average number of citizens traveling by vehicle –on a specific day in each of the OECD countries studied. They then adjusted that data to the size of the population and typical mobility patterns in that country. There was an all-around decrease in mobility starting in March. However, what was important was the date on which a country implemented social-distancing measures. For example, mobility data indicates that the time it took to respond to the pandemic and the severity of the lockdown were similar in Israel and the Czech Republic. However, even though Israel’s lockdown was longer than that in Czechia, the two countries’mortality rates remained similar. Another example: The lockdown in Spain was longer and tighter than the French closure, but when both ended, mortality rates in the two countries were about the same, since both started social distancing at around the same time. A delay of 7.49 days in introducing social-distancing measures doubled mortality, the researchers discovered. “Israel could have reached the same mortality rate with a lockdown that was less economically and socially lethal – in the first round and probably in the present outbreak as well,” the scientists say. “Countries that responded quickly with social-distancing measures – not necessarily with a tight lockdown – ultimately emerged from the first outbreak with better results. Even in Sweden, a country that never imposed a lockdown, we can see that the early decrease in mobility, starting in March, was manifested in the mortality rate.” The researchers note that their study “is based purely on observations and does not relate to the premises of any existing epidemiological model.” Gil Loewenthal, Shiran Abadi, Oren Avram, Keren Halabi, Noa Ecker and Nathan Nagar of TAU’s Faculty of Life Sciences also participated in the research. The paper has been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine. To read the original article click here. For more articles from Israel21c click here.
