Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN via Dr. Axe – Do you know about astragalus? If not, you should, because astragalus root is one of the most powerful immune-building plants on the planet. This adaptogen herb helps beat stress while fighting disease at the same time. How effective can it be? Turns out, plenty. In addition to pumping up your immune system, studies show it’s vital for cardiovascular health and can even help fight off tumors and alleviate symptoms of chemotherapy. Believe it or not, that’s not all, either. There are more astragalus benefits that are simply unbelievable, which is why it’s one of the essential herbs — like ashwagandha — to add to your wellness regimen. What Is Astragalus? Astragalus is a plant within the Leguminosae (beans or legumes) family, with a very long history as an immune system booster and disease fighter. Its roots are in Traditional Chinese Medicine, in which it’s been used as an adaptogen for thousands of years — meaning it helps the body fight off stress and disease. Today, astragalus medicinal healing and treatment uses span many different illnesses and diseases. The perennial flowering plant, also called milkvetch root and Huang qi, grows from 16 to 36 inches tall and is native to the north and eastern regions of China. It’s also been traced back to Mongolia and Korea. Astragalus roots are harvested from 4-year-old plants and are the only part of the plant that’s used medicinally. Only two of the over 2,000 species of astragalus, astragalus membranaceus and astragalus mongholicus, are used medicinally. Astragalus contains three components that allow the plant to have such a positive impact on human health: saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides, which are all active compounds contained in certain plants, including some fruits and vegetables. Saponins are known for their ability to help lower cholesterol, improve the immune system and prevent cancer. Flavonoids, also found in astragalus, provide health benefits through cell signaling. They show antioxidative qualities, control and scavenge of free radicals, and can help prevent heart disease, cancer and immunodeficiency viruses. Polysaccharides are known to have antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory capabilities, among other health benefits. Benefits In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the herb was hailed as a protector against stresses, both mental and physical. Astragalus provides health benefits to a number of body systems and ailments. Although more studies in humans are needed to solidify its effectiveness, success in rats, mice and other animals have prompted progressive research on the herb. Because of the tremendous success of so many research studies and trials, new information about astragalus is coming to light all the time. In general, its greatest strength is preventing and protecting cells against cell death and other harmful elements, such as free radicals and oxidation. According to continuing research, astragalus health benefits include: 1. Acts as an Anti-Inflammatory From arthritis to heart disease, inflammation is often the culprit of the damage. Many studies show that thanks to its saponins and polysaccharides, astragalus can reduce inflammatory response in connection to a number of illnesses and conditions, from helping to heal wounds and lesions to reducing inflammation in diabetic kidney disease. 2. Boosts the Immune System In terms of reputation, boosting the immune system is astragalus’ claim to fame. It’s been used in this capacity for thousands of years. A study out of Beijing displayed its ability to control T-helper cells 1 and 2, essentially regulating the body’s immune responses. It’s also been shown to enhance immune response in mice, and in a randomized controlled trial, members of the Polish rowing team had their immunological balance restored “through a stabilization of NK and Treg cells with a positive trend in Tδγ towards Th1 response during restitution by cytokine IL2 modulation” when taking astragalus root. 3. Helps Slow or Prevent the Growth of Tumors Many recent screenings have shown the success of astragalus saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides in decreasing or eliminating tumors. In instances of chemoresistance treating liver cancer, astragalus has shown potential in reversing multidrug resistance and as an addition to conventional chemotherapy, according to a study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. The root’s anti-tumor effects have been studied extensively, showcasing promise to slow or prevent tumor growth. 4. Protects the Cardiovascular System The flavonoids present in astragalus are antioxidants that help prevent plaque buildup in arteries and narrowing of vessel walls by protecting the inner wall of the vessel. A 2014 study published in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine suggests injection of astragalus, combined with conventional treatment for viral myocarditis (inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall), makes treatment more successful in heart conditions. Other animal studies have shown its ability to reduce blood pressure, and can help control triglycerides. High levels of triglycerides put individuals at risk for many forms of heart disease, such as stroke, heart attack and hardening of artery walls. During a heart attack, heart muscle damage occurs when there is a lack of blood supply and oxygen. At that time, calcium overload creates secondary damage. Astragalus may prevent additional heart muscle damage by regulating calcium homeostasis in the heart. 5. Regulates and Helps Prevent Diabetes and Illnesses Related to Diabetes Astragalus has been studied progressively as an antidiabetic. Several animal studies show its ability to relieve insulin resistance and help manage diabetes naturally. The herb’s saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides all are effective in treating and regulating type 1 and 2 diabetes. They’re able to increase insulin sensitivity, protect pancreatic beta cells (the cells in the pancreas that produce and release insulin) and also act as anti-inflammatories in areas related to diabetes symptoms. Kidney disease in diabetics is also a common problem, and astragalus has been used to treat kidney illness for many years. More recent studies in humans and animals have shown astragalus can slow the progress of kidney problems in diabetics and protect the renal system. 6. Contains Antioxidative and Anti-Aging Capabilities Oxidation due to free radical damage is the main component in disease and aging, and many elements found in astragalus fight free radical damage and prevent of oxidative stress. The herb’s polysaccharides have positive effects on the immune system and improvement of the function of the brain, both of which could lengthen life span. 7. Aids in Wound Healing and Helps Minimize Scarring Because of its anti-inflammatory qualities, astragalus has a long history of treating wounds. Radix astragali, another name for the dried root of astragalus, has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the repair and regeneration of injured organs and tissues. In a 2012 study by the Institute of Pharmaceutics at Zhejiang University, wounds treated with astragaloside IV (the active ingredient in dried astragalus root) showed recovery rates increase two- to threefold over 48–96 hours. It was concluded that astragalus is a promising natural product for anti-scarring and healing in wounds. 8. Helps Alleviate Symptoms of Chemotherapy Astragalus has been shown to help patients receiving chemotherapy to recover more quickly and extend their life spans. In cases of severe chemotherapy symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and bone marrow suppression, astragalus has been given intravenously and in combination with other Chinese herbal mixtures. Early research suggests it has the ability to reduce these symptoms and increase the efficacy of the chemotherapy treatments. 9. Can Treat Colds and Flu Because of astragalus’ antiviral capabilities, it has long been used to treat common colds and the flu. It’s commonly combined with other herbs, like ginseng, angelica and licorice root. As with many other natural cold remedies, it seems to work better when used when healthy individuals use the supplement regularly in order to prevent the illness before it happens. A regimen of astragalus before the colder months of winter may help prevent or decrease the number of colds and upper respiratory illnesses individuals will have throughout the season. 10. Provides Supplemental Therapy for Chronic Asthma Astragalus has been used to treat chronic asthma and determined to be a successful supplemental therapy and asthma natural remedy. After being treated, hypersensitivity in airways decreased substantially and mucus production and inflammation were reduced in studies. By preventing or reducing asthma attacks, individuals could be relieved of chronic asthma issues. There is also evidence to suggest astragalus can potentially: prevent collagen degradation help heal lung tissue affected by bronchopulmonary dysplasia in newborns inhibit herpes simplex virus 1 prevent the replication of viruses like Coxsackie B-3, a virus that triggers illnesses ranging from mild stomach issues to major heart complications treat inflammation in allergic dermatitis (an allergic reaction of the skin) help treat hepatitis by inhibiting hepatitis B virus cells in the liver treat HIV by protecting T-helper cells fight the virus for much longer be used as a mild diuretic Uses and Recipes There are a number of ways to use astragalus root medicinally. Astragalus is currently used as an addition to conventional treatments and should not be used as a replacement for medications unless suggested by a doctor. Astragalus is available at most Chinese markets or health food stores in these forms: Tincture (liquid alcohol extract) Capsules and tablets Injectable forms for use in hospital or clinical settings in Asian countries Topically for the skin Dried and used in tea There is not a standardized dosage for astragalus, but you can work with a doctor or specialist to determine how much you should take and how often. There are differences in doses depending on age, health and medical history. Wondering how to incorporate this antiviral herb into your diet? Here are a couple recipes to try: Herbal Immune System Soup with Astragalus Astragalus Butter (Peanut Butter Substitute) Risk and Side Effects Astragalus is generally safe to use with no serious side effects. There are possible interactions with other herbal supplements, so start with smaller doses to prevent side effects. Women who are pregnant and who are nursing should not use astragalus, as some animal research indicates it may not be safe for pregnant moms. People with autoimmune diseases should speak with their doctors before starting astragalus because of its ability to stimulate the immune system. Individuals with diseases like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other immune system conditions could be especially sensitive to astragalus. Some specialists suggest only using a specific adaptogen for a few months and then moving on to another. The following drug interactions can occur with astragalus: Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar): This drug is used to suppress the immune system. Using astragalus can decrease the effectiveness of this drug. Lithium: Astragalus can affect how the body reduces lithium levels because of its diuretic qualities. Taking astragalus with lithium can lead to unsafe levels of lithium in the body. Speak with a medical professional before combining astragalus with lithium, as a dosage change might be required. Immunosuppressants: Drugs that suppress the immune system are commonly used to help prevent rejection in transplant patients and accept the new organ or tissue. Because of astragalus’ immune system boosting capabilities, it decreases the effectiveness of these drugs. Some of these drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids) and others. Final Thoughts Astragalus root is an adaptogen used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a remedy for a large number of conditions. The most extensively researched benefits of astragalus are: Acts as an anti-inflammatory Boosts the immune system Helps slow or prevent the growth of tumors Protects the cardiovascular system Regulates and prevents diabetes and illnesses related to diabetes Contains antioxidative and anti-aging capabilities Aids in wound healing and minimizes scarring Helps alleviate symptoms of chemotherapy Treats colds and flu Provides supplemental therapy for chronic asthma There are several ways to use it, from teas to supplements to topical creams. You can also incorporate it into various recipes. When using astragalus, be sure to consult with your physician, and be aware of possible interactions and side effects.

Dr. Don Colbert – For many people, supplements are a necessary addition to a healthy diet. They can deliver key nutrients, even in therapeutic amounts, to support whole-body and system-specific health. For example, most people have a very difficult time getting enough omega-3 fats for a healthy omega-6 to omega-3 ratio without supplements. But, this doesn’t mean you should blindly buy any supplement. Buyer beware: There are often dangerous ingredients in supplements. Sometimes, the dangerous ingredients are easy to spot. Other times, they are listed within words or other ingredients that make them difficult to identify. Or, they are hidden additives you’d never suspect. Luckily, you’ve got a trusted source of supplements in Divine Health. Divine Health supplements never contain these dangerous ingredients, are safe and effective, and are formulated to contain the most beneficial nutrients in highly absorbable forms without extra additives you don’t need. No matter what you’re buying, it’s vital to buy from a source you can trust, and always check the ingredient list. Here’s our guide, and a list of 10 dangerous ingredients in supplements you should avoid. Supplement Claims, Confusion, and Data Like most food packaging, supplements often have confusing labels. On the front, you’ll find marketing. Unless it’s a strict health claim, it’s not well regulated. As the consumer, it’s up to you to investigate beyond these claims. To start, follow the #1 rule for food packaging: Ignore everything you read on the front side of the packaging. It’s marketing. Some marketing is truthful. Some isn’t. Then, go to the ingredients list. Although there is still some ambiguity here, it’s your best place for finding dangerous ingredients in supplements since they are typically additives and thickening agents rather than nutrients. This is very important data. Next, look at the nutrition label. Nutrition labels on supplements can be a bit different than those on foods. On food labels, the nutrition label shows you the macro- and micro-nutrients in the foods, but not the ingredients themselves. However, on supplement nutrition labels, the nutrients are the ingredients. Therefore, you will often find both ingredients (listed as micronutrients) and their amounts, on the nutrition label. This is also important data. How Can Dangerous Ingredients in Supplements Cause Harm? There are a few ways dangerous ingredients can cause harm. These include: Ingredients that cause direct harm or inflammation to the digestive system. Here’s one example of a common over-the-counter medication that causes this type of harm. Ingredients that are suspected carcinogens. Some ingredients in supplements, medications, and manufactured foods are suspected to cause cellular changes, overgrowth, and potentially carcinogenic activity. Ingredients that are not listed, but can be contained within other ingredients, and potentially cause harm. For example, some natural substances contain very high levels of lead or mercury. It’s vital to buy your supplements from a trustworthy source that has been tested for toxins. Ingredients that do not contain as much of a nutrient as they claim, or more of a nutrient than they claim. While this doesn’t seem like a direct harm, if you believe you’re getting 2000 IU of Vitamin D, but are actually only getting 200 IU, or are getting 20,000 IU unknowingly, there is potential for harm. Furthermore, if the nutrient is in a form that’s not absorbable to the human body, you may think you’re getting a healthy supplement, but in reality you’re throwing money away. As you consider this, here are 10 dangerous ingredients in supplements to avoid. 10 Dangerous Ingredients in Supplements Soybean Oil: As we’ve discussed at length, soybean oil is a potent source of processed omega-6 fats. Omega-6 oils actually work against omega-3 oils, and are associated with declines in metabolic health, cardiovascular health, and increased inflammation (1, 2, 3). Aspartame and Saccharin: Man-made artificial sweeteners have been widely used in “diet foods” and “health foods.” Unfortunately, they can have negative effects on gut bacteria. In fact, animal and human studies have shown that aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and other artificial sweeteners can impair gut bacteria (4). In fact, there is documentation of (5): Saccharin reducing healthy bacteria growth by 40% Sucralose decreasing bacteria by more than 2-fold Aspartame increasing the number of harmful bacteria by 10% Other sugar substitutes, such as the sugar alcohol xylitol, does not seem to affect gut bacteria (6). A good supplement should promote health in your body, including your gut. Fake Flavorings and Colorings: Food dyes are not benign and have no place in a healthy supplement. Several studies have found that food dyes exacerbate hyperactivity in sensitive children (7). While you may be an adult, this finding confirms that food dyes make their way into our systems and can affect our bodies. What’s more, Red 3 is a dye that was banned in the 1990s, and then had the ban retracted. Lab studies have shown tumor concerns with Red 3, and many people anecdotal report intolerances for it (8,9). Titanium Dioxide: Titanium Dioxide is a toxic additive is a colorant used to make tablets and capsules bright white and is typically used in paint, cosmetics, paper, and sunscreen. This filler has no nutritional value and can actually cause inflammation in the respiratory, digestive, and immune systems (10). Sodium Benzoate: Sodium Benzoate is used to prolong the life of supplements. This preservative may become a carcinogen substance known as benzene when mixed with vitamin C (11). Ingesting foods or beverages containing that lead to high levels of systemic benzene can cause issues such as stomach irritation, tiredness, dizziness, and even vomiting and convulsions (12). Moreover, sodium benzoate itself has been linked with migraines (13), and it can increase oxidative stress in the body (14). Sodium Ascorbate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Cornstarch: Unless it says differently on the label, these ingredients are typically made from genetically modified (GMO) corn. GMO corn is heavily exposed to harmful pesticides which are linked tonegative impacts on human health (15,16,17). Potassium Sorbate: Potassium Sorbate is another additive used to preserve food and supplements. It may lead to migraines and allergic reactions in sensitive people. Sulfites: Sulfites can be especially harmful for those who suffer from asthma, causing an increase in symptoms. They may also cause migraines when consumed (18). Carrageenan: Carrageenan is a natural thickening agent found in many foods and supplements. Unfortunately, it has been linked to blood glucose issues (19), and harmful gastrointestinal effects (20). Added and Hidden Sugars: Supplements that are in a liquid, powdered, chewable, or gummy form often have added or hidden sugars. These sugars can cause blood glucose issues in some people, and if you’re in the Keto Zone, they can kick you right out. What’s more, many of these sugars will be in liquid or gel form, such as high fructose corn syrup, rice syrup, or cane sugar syrup, and travel through the digestive system and into the bloodstream quickly. High sugar intake is linked to poor health, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and more. It’s associated with brain aging, and may even be linked to degenerative diseases (21). Let’s keep sugar out of healthy supplements! Bottom Line It’s important to find supplements you can trust. If you haven’t already, take a look at Divine Health’s amazing line-up of supplements including Brain Zone, Nano-Particle Hemp Oil, Carb Assist, and more. And we invite you: Take a hard look at the ingredients. You won’t find harmful colorings, chemicals, additives, or fillers. You’ll only find what’s necessary and industry-best ingredients. You can always trust Divine Health supplements. Buyer beware: Always check for dangerous ingredients in your supplements! To read the original article click here.

Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365– Whether we call it exhaustion, burnout, tiredness, or fatigue, most of us experience low levels of energy from time to time. Many people turn to high-sugar, caffeine-laden foods and drinks to fight fatigue, but unpleasant side effects – such as the well-known “sugar crash” or jangled nerves from too much coffee – make these remedies far from ideal. Fortunately, studies suggest that certain herbs and nutrients can spur flagging concentration and boost energy. For instance, a recent review published in Frontiers in Pharmacology highlights the ability of Panax ginseng to increase fatigue resistance. The following natural solutions may help you restore mental sharpness and physical stamina – and turn your energy from “fizzling” to “sizzling.” Adaptogenic and Antioxidant Herbs Like Ginseng, Sage, & Goldenroot Can Improve Energy & Attention A time-honored herbal remedy for fatigue, ginseng contains antioxidant compounds called ginsenosides, which have been shown to improve exercise performance, boost mental alertness and lift mood. A 2020 scientific review showed that ginseng helped decrease fatigue and reduce malondialdehyde levels (a marker of oxidative stress) while increasing antioxidants such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase. The scientists concluded that ginseng could be recommended for “routine use” against fatigue. To bolster concentration, increase energy and brighten outlook, natural healers typically advise amounts from 200 mg to 1,000 mg of ginseng a day. Check with your integrative doctor before supplementing with ginseng. Botanically known as Salvia, sage is packed with potent antioxidants, including luteolin, rosmarinic acid, quercetin, and apigenin. This fragrant garden herb and cooking spice has long been associated with knowledge and learning. In fact, the word “sage” literally means “wise.” Studies have suggested that sage inhibits a compound known as acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine, a brain chemical important for healthy cognitive function. Researchers believe that this allows sage to help improve concentration, promote alertness and even enhance word recall. Natural health experts typically advise dried, powdered sage leaf in amounts of 300 to 600 mg a day – but get the thumbs-up from a physician before supplementing. Rhodiola rosea, also known as goldenroot and artic root, is classified as an adaptogen or substance acknowledged as helping the body adapt to physical and emotional stress. Native to Siberia, northern Europe, and Asia, rhodiola is treasured in herbal healing for its ability to improve physical stamina and improve alertness. In fact, it has traditionally been used by mountaineers in the Himalayas to enhance physical stamina and sharpen reflexes. Nowadays, rhodiola is believed to be particularly helpful against fatigue and “burnout” (emotional and/or physical exhaustion resulting from chronic occupational stress). In one study, 400 mg of rhodiola rosea a day significantly improved energy level, concentration, and mood. Consult with your integrative doctor before supplementing. Other herbs believed to have an energizing effect include gotu kola, maca, Siberian ginseng, and ashwagandha. Renew Energy with Essential Oils For many, the warm, spicy fragrance of peppermint is linked with a sense of increased well-being and renewed energy. Studies show that using this essential oil through aromatherapy can brighten mood, spark better athletic performance and increase alertness. A hybrid of spearmint – botanically known as Mentha spicata – and water mint, or Mentha aquatica, peppermint essential oil can be ingested by way of a diffuser. You can also use peppermint oil topically by mixing a few drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil, such as olive or coconut oil, and massaging it into the skin. Peppermint oil shouldn’t be taken internally and is not for use on children. Check with your doctor before using peppermint oil. (Pro tip: Other essential oils thought to boost energy include rosemary, lemon, cinnamon, and lavender). Boost Energy with Common-Sense Solutions Although it may seem counterintuitive, the truth is that sometimes you have to expend energy to boost energy. Taking a brisk stroll promotes healthy blood flow, which can help to restore a sense of vitality. In addition, an appropriate exercise program also supports a calm, stable mood, helping to reduce the anxiety that can drain energy. Restful sleep is also a “must.” The act of sleeping increases levels of ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, also known as the “energy” molecule. Between 7 and 9 hours of sleep, a night appears to be the sweet spot for optimal energy for most adults. Sleep hygiene experts advise sleeping in a totally darkened room, free of intrusive outdoor light and “blue” light from computer screens and cell phones. Being dehydrated can cause energy to plummet. Most authorities recommend that a 150-lb person consume about 75 ounces of water a day. Pure, filtered water flavored with lemon is a great choice for staying hydrated. Remember, liquid-rich fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, can also help you reach your fluid quotient for the day. Keep sweetened and caffeinated beverages to a minimum. Of course, maintaining a healthy blood sugar level is the key by eating nutritious, organic meals with good quality fats and protein. Stay away from processed sugars – especially if you suffer with blood sugar problems. If you need help, seek the advice of an experienced health coach. Hopefully, you can enlist these solutions to help you fight “the blahs,” banish brain fog – and refresh and restore your energy levels naturally.
