Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 – Parasites consume nutrients from the food we eat – and can also feed on blood, resulting in a lack of vital iron and protein. In addition, they can cause malabsorption of nutrients, leading to deficiencies. Parasites lurking deep within the human body may be hidden from sight – but their effects can be far-reaching and serious. Ranging in size from tiny microorganisms to ten-foot-long segmented worms, intestinal parasites can cause inflammation in the brain, muscles, esophagus, and skin and are associated with leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, acid reflux, joint pain, seasonal and food allergies – and a host of other health problems. The good news is that these noxious pests are vulnerable to certain foods and natural herbal remedies. Read on to discover what these substances are and how you can use them to rid your body of a parasitic infection. Intestinal parasites can wreak havoc on our health Parasites consume nutrients from the food we eat – and can also feed on blood, resulting in a lack of vital iron and protein. In addition, they can cause malabsorption of nutrients, leading to deficiencies. Intestinal parasites can enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body, where they can penetrate body tissues such as the liver, lungs, and stomach – with serious consequences. For example, parasites lodged in the liver can cause cirrhosis and abscesses. There are many routes through which parasites can enter the body, including contaminated food – particularly pork, shellfish, and scavenger fish – and water. Some can also be transmitted through the bite of a mosquito or flea, through intimate contact, or even through the nose and mouth after a contaminated surface has been touched. Although anyone can get parasites, having low immunity, poor diet, and poor hygiene can all raise the risk of infection. Protozoa and helminths: A pair of health threats There are two major classes of intestinal parasites. Protozoa are single-celled microscopic organisms. Examples of infectious parasitical protozoa include Giardia intestinalis and Cryptosporidium. Because these microorganisms can reproduce inside humans, infections can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms of protozoan disease include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, dehydration, fatigue and joint pain. Helminths Helminths are multicellular worms and include roundworms, flatworms, pinworms – the most common form of helminth in the United States – tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Helminths differ from protozoa in that although they can live in your lower intestine, they can’t reproduce there. However, they can still cause serious health problems. Before treating for parasites, make sure you undergo comprehensive tests, including microbiology. After you know which parasites you are fighting, you can try one or more of the following foods and herbs to eliminate them. Pumpkin seeds are an anti-parasitical snack Pumpkin seeds are tasty, crunchy, and nutritious. They also can paralyze helminths, allowing them to be easily flushed from the body, and have been traditionally used as a remedy for parasites. Some natural health experts advise blending a cup of raw pumpkin seeds with half a cup of coconut milk and half a cup of water, then eating the resultant paste – following up with a glass of water. Although pumpkin seeds can be very effective, results may not be immediate – you may need to repeat the treatment several times. Garlic: A one-two punch against parasites Garlic is packed with sulfur-containing amino acids, which help to combat parasites. A compound in garlic known as allicin also helps to kill and expel worms – but the garlic must be sliced, diced, or chopped to fully release it. The more finely garlic is chopped, the more allicin it releases. After mincing or dicing garlic, let it sit for a few minutes to allow this chemical process to occur. Alternatively, you can chew it for at least a minute. Papaya: A tropical fruit that fights parasites Along with amino acids, digestive enzymes such as papain (found in papayas) and bromelain (found in pineapples) can create an unfriendly environment for protozoa and helminths alike. The value of this traditional natural remedy for intestinal parasites was confirmed in a placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Medicinal Foods. Sixty children were treated with a mixture of air-dried Carica papaya seeds and honey, resulting in parasite clearance rates that ranged between 71.4 percent and 100 percent. Researchers praised papaya seeds as an effective, cheap, and safe way to treat human intestinal parasites. In addition to foods such as pumpkin seeds, garlic, and papaya seeds, some common herbs have parasite-destroying properties. Just one word of caution: Always consult a holistic physician or trusted herbal medicine expert before starting a detoxification program to avoid harming the body. Let’s not forget: Oil of oregano Highly antimicrobial, oil of oregano – made from Oreganum vulgare – can be very effective against intestinal parasites. In a study published in Phytotherapy Research, adults infected with three different types of parasites were given 600 mg of oregano oil a day. After six weeks, parasites were eradicated in 72 percent of the participants; 23 percent greatly decreased their parasite load. Because researchers think that oil of oregano gets its anti-parasitical powers from carvacrol, be sure to use oil standardized to at least 65 percent carvacrol. Neem: An ancient remedy for parasites Antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral neem has been used in India for thousands of years to reliably kill internal and external parasites. The neem tree, scientifically known as Azadirachta indica, is native to India, where it serves so many medicinal purposes that it is often referred to as “the village pharmacy.” One of neem’s assets is that it not only kills parasites but also removes the toxins they leave behind as they are dying. This detoxifying property of neem also makes it a boon to the liver, which is often compromised by parasitic infection. Wormwood, black walnut, and cloves: a potent combination Scientifically known as Artemisia annua and also called annual mugwort and sweet Annie, Wormwood has pronounced anti-protozoan effects and is particularly effective at killing parasitic larvae. In addition, it stimulates macrophages, which are key in the immune system’s defense against parasitic infestation. Wormwood is often combined with black walnut, or Juglans negra, and the essential oil of cloves. The juglone in black walnut helps to kill parasites, while the antimicrobial oil of cloves can destroy virtually all parasite eggs in the intestinal tract. Combining these three substances can interrupt the parasitic life cycle, terminating these pests for good. How diet can help you to avoid parasites,/h5> Remember: Organic acids and enzymes help to kill parasites. Eating foods rich in these substances can create a body environment that discourages parasitic infection. As a preventative, natural health experts recommend eating six tablespoons of raw, extra-virgin coconut oil, a whole clove of garlic, and one large red onion. High-quality multi-strain probiotics can help destroy parasites in both the upper and lower gastrointestinal systems. Drinking fermented beverages – such as kefir and apple cider vinegar – and eating fermented probiotic-rich foods such as miso soup, sauerkraut, and kimchi can encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and help to ward off infection. Finally, it is essential to sharply reduce and eliminate sugar, grains – which break down to sugar in the body – and alcohol.

Michelle Marks via NaturalHealth365 – Most of us are aware that antibiotics are powerful drugs that fight bacteria-related infections with harmful side effects. Unfortunately, in today’s society of pill taking, we use too many antibiotics with the increasing danger of antibiotic resistance. The problem is further compounded with antibiotics found in factory foods like dairy and meat products. According to the CDDEP (The Center of Disease Dynamics, Economics, & Policy), the United States is one of the highest users of antibiotics – ranking fifth in the world. How the Wrong Diet Makes Antibiotics Useless Heavy prescription abuse and unintentional ingestion of antibiotic-based foods are the primary cause of resistance to antibiotics. Unfortunately, this is emerging as one of the most serious public health problems of our time. Although antibiotics can eliminate infectious conditions, their continuous use builds resistance to the antibiotic drug. The harmful bacteria in the body get accustomed to the therapeutic levels of antibiotic drugs and stop responding to the drug. In other words, an antibiotic drug, even at its highest potency, cannot stop bacterial growth and becomes incapable of treating an underlying infection. In fact, researchers suggest that almost every kind of bacterium has adapted itself to show resistance to antibiotic drug treatment. What Are the Potential Dangers of Antibiotic Resistance? Destroys healthy bacteria: The population of healthy bacteria in the gut is decreased to a smaller number creating an imbalance in the gut ecosystem resulting in frequent illness, indigestion, and poor nutrient absorption. Makes infections spread faster: Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can spread like wildfire to others in the family or neighborhood, threatening an entire community with a new strain of infection. Complicates treatment: Because the strain is more virulent, the patient does not respond to heavy doses of drugs. As a result, the treatment becomes more difficult and expensive. Death due to infection: The underlying infection remains untreated, posing a severe threat to other organs and, in some cases, leads to death. What Actions Can We Take to Avoid Antibiotic Resistance? 1. Avoid the spread of infection in the first place by washing your hands thoroughly. 2. Consume organically grown produce, avoid consuming animal and animal-based products that are fed antibiotics. 3. Choose natural antibiotics like garlic, herbs, and vitamin C that have bactericidal properties. What Are Natural Antibiotics? Nature has an effective yet safe answer to bacterial infections through various phytochemicals from different plant parts. These have been used for many centuries in traditional medicine systems to treat a variety of conditions. Natural antibiotics act in a unique mechanism – in addition to their bactericidal action. They stimulate the immune system, exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties that inhibit the growth of bacteria, and scavenge them. What Are Some of My Options? Vitamin C: This water-soluble vitamin is a potent antioxidant and anti-infective agent. Abundant in all fresh fruits, especially the citrus variety, vitamin C can be consumed liberally in the diet in its natural state. If considering a vitamin C supplement, the recommended amount is 1-3 grams per day for healthy individuals. But, if you’re suffering from a troubling health issue – much more vitamin C may be required for a short period of time. Oregano oil: The oil of oregano leaves is a powerful anti-infective agent and natural antibiotic. It has been shown to be effective against harmful bacteria, yeast, and viruses. Most of the oregano oils in the market are usually a blend of other oils. The common recommendation is 2 – 3 drops 3 – 4 times daily. If consuming capsules, an amount of 100 – 150 mg per capsule per day is recommended. Olive leaves: Olive leaves are known for their anti-microbial properties and analgesic effects. The active ingredient oleuropein is responsible for its therapeutic effects. Olive leaves are low in toxicity, and the recommended safe amount for an adult is 25 mg per day twice daily for maintaining health. Ginger: The active components in ginger gingerols, zingerone, and shogaol are linked to its anti-bacterial effects. It is also a potent anti-inflammatory agent and is used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine as a pain reliever. Thus, ginger is a fantastic therapeutic food that can be included in the daily diet as part of a menu. As little as 2 – 3” of ginger added to a shredded, crushed, or cooked dish will take care of daily needs. Turmeric: This is a culinary staple in Indian cuisine and can be consumed safely at 1 to 2 teaspoons per day added to a recipe. Turmeric is known for its remarkable bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, anti-infective, and anti-carcinogenic effects. If considering a supplement, 500 grams consumed in a fat-soluble base facilitates its absorption. Garlic: There are plenty of studies that demonstrate the powerful antibacterial effect of garlic. One study showed that natural spices of garlic exhibited a potent antibacterial effect. According to the researchers of this study, garlic showed an effect on multi-drug pathogens and can be used for treating drug-resistant microbial diseases. Garlic needs to be crushed, exposed to air for a few minutes, and consumed raw for effective antibiotic effects. If using a supplement, consume garlic extract with at least 1.3% alliin at 600 – 1,200 mg per day. What’s the bottom line? With antibiotic resistance on the rise at an alarming rate, it seems wise to turn to natural and healthier alternatives to fight bacterial infections. It is also important to remember that we need to consume organic, natural, and antibiotic-free products for improving overall health and make a conscious effort to avoid unnecessary ingestion of antibiotics – which can damage our digestive system and immune function.

Dr. Don Colbert – Do you suffer from bloating after meals? With 74% of Americans reporting experiencing digestive discomfort, bloating has become an epidemic in our society! Not only is bloating an uncomfortable experience but it can be embarrassing in social situations when you have excessive gas or need to urgently run to the bathroom. Causes of Bloating Although most people consider bloating a rather minor health issue, it can often be a sign of a serious underlying problem in the digestive system. The sensation of bloating is often caused by a buildup of gas in the digestive tract. This gas comes from either air that has been swallowed or from the bacteria in the gut. Anxiety Swallowed air is usually a result of anxiety. When the nervous system is in “fight or flight” mode the breathing becomes short and shallow and can lead to excess air being swallowed. In fact, anxiety attacks are frequently accompanied by bouts of burping up of air that has been swallowed due to improper breathing. Effective anxiety reduction techniques include prayer, meditation, nature immersion, and relaxed time spent with loved ones. There are other reasons for swallowed air such as eating too quickly, using straws, chewing gum, or sucking on hard candy. Gut Dysbiosis The other common cause of air in the digestive tract is from the fermentation of sugars and fiber by the bacteria in the gut. Trillions of bacteria live in our gastrointestinal systems and the collection of these bacteria is referred to as the “microbiome.” Some bacteria are good, some are bad, and some are neutral. The good bacteria help us break down and assimilate our food, modulate our immune systems, and protect our bodies from foreign invaders. Unfortunately, due to our modern lifestyles, the ratio of bacteria can become imbalanced and the bad bacteria can take over and even migrate to parts of the digestive system they are not meant to be in. This is referred to as “intestinal dysbiosis.” Bacteria and Bloating In those with dysbiosis, foods that contain certain types of sugar and fiber will feed the excess bacteria who then produce gas as a byproduct of digestion. The buildup of this gas is often the cause of bloating. In order to ease the symptoms of bloating it is essential to balance the microbiome. This can be done by eliminating foods that feed the bad bacteria and consuming more good bacteria (probiotics) and food for the good bacteria (prebiotics). FODMAPs Sadly, many otherwise healthy vegetables can potentially contribute to bloating in certain extreme cases. This is because vegetables like onions, garlic, and leeks contain specific carbohydrates called FODMAPs. These carbohydrates are readily fermented by bacteria in the bowel and can feed an overgrowth of bad bacteria. Beat the Bloat! In order to reduce the incidence of bloating it is important to pay attention to the lifestyle factors that contribute to this phenomenon. There is no one cause of bloating universal to everybody. It is important to listen to your body so you can figure out what foods and factors are major contributors for you. To make it easier for you, here is a list of foods that likely contribute to bloating and foods that will likely help prevent it. Foods to Avoid Sugar Difficult to digest grains such as wheat, corn, brown rice, barley, rye, and oats. High FODMAP veggies such as cabbage, brussels sprouts, onions, garlic, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower Pasteurized dairy Foods to Add Probiotics Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, raw yogurt or kefir, kombucha, and Fermented Green Supremefood Water rich and low sugar fruit and veggies such as leafy greens, cucumbers, berries, and celery Feel the Fermented Difference Dr. Colbert developed Fermented Green Supremefood as an easily digested alternative to conventional greens powders. By fermenting the vegetables before consumption, the chances of bloating are dramatically decreased. The result is a delicious and nutrient dense formula that provides a substantial dose of probiotics! More and more, science is proving that a healthy digestive system is the key to a healthy brain and body—and the power to keep your gut healthy lies directly with you! Get Dr. Colbert’s Healthy Gut Zone book today to help you understand the connection between your gut and your health. You will learn that whatever inflames your gut will eventually inflame your brain and the rest of your body. Making the right food choices will become the medicine in which you will walk and live in divine health.

Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 – According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease, affecting over 18 million Americans. CAD is a condition in which arteries leading to the heart become constricted and narrowed by cholesterol-laden plaque (atherosclerosis). A complete blockage in an artery can cause blood clot formation, leading to a potentially life-threatening heart attack or stroke. Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Chinese healers turned to garlic to treat a variety of ills. Now, research shows that extracts from these pungent little cloves can play a role in modern-day therapies to combat heart disease. In study after study, aged garlic extract is impressing researchers with its ability to vanquish atherosclerotic plaque. Let’s take a look at some of the evidence. Is it Possible to Reverse Heart Disease? Study Makes Bold Claim About Aged Garlic Extract Garlic, botanically known as Allium sativum, gets its therapeutic powers from its supply of allicin – an enzyme formed when garlic is chopped, crushed, or chewed. Allicin’s powers are further unleashed when it breaks down into disease-fighting organosulfur compounds known as L-cysteine sulfoxides. (In fact, cysteine is a “building block” of glutathione, the body’s most indispensable antioxidant). In a placebo-controlled study published in 2016 in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers examined the effect of garlic extracts on patients with metabolic syndrome or MS. Metabolic syndrome – a linked cluster of unhealthy conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol, and obesity – creates a sort of “perfect storm” for heart disease to develop. The remarkable results showed that garlic not only reduced cholesterol and lowered blood pressure but reduced plaque in coronary arteries. And, it excelled at dissolving a particular type of deposit known as “soft plaque.” Some experts believe that this softer, more waxy plaque is more likely to rupture – and cause a life-threatening blood clot – than the denser variety. Significantly, the researchers found the results so compelling that they used the “R” word (reverse) to describe the effects. “Aged garlic extract can help slow the progression of atherosclerosis and reverse the early stages of heart disease,” the team unequivocally stated. The scientists added that “safe, highly tolerable” aged garlic extract could be used as either a stand-alone therapy or as an adjunct to standard medical treatment. Aged Garlic Extract Offers Help for High Blood Pressure, Outperforms Prescription Drug High blood pressure, which occurs in roughly 25 percent of the adult population in developed nations, poses a particular risk to heart health. Also known as hypertension, high blood pressure makes blood vessels more prone to rupture and more prone to the accumulation of artery-clogging cholesterol. Once again, garlic can come to the rescue. In a 2019 review of studies published in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine, the authors reported that aged garlic extract had a favorable effect on blood pressure, dropping it by 7 to 16 mmHg in the systolic and 5 to 9 mmHg in the diastolic. In one study, researchers noted that garlic supplementation even outperformed atenolol, a popular pharmaceutical blood pressure medication. In addition to lowering blood pressure, garlic extract caused mild to moderate decreases in total cholesterol and reduced arterial stiffness and the “stickiness” of blood platelets – meaning the tendency of blood to form into clots. The investigators pointed out that blood pressure reduction, along with other interventions, has been shown to slash the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke by a stunning 40 percent. More Good News: Garlic Influences the Ratio of Healthy to Unhealthy Fats, Supports Friendly Bacteria in the Gut When it comes to reducing risk factors for heart disease, it turns out that garlic extracts can provide valuable “pieces” of the interlocking puzzle. As researchers have learned, adipose (fat) tissue of overweight individuals acts almost like a separate organ of the body, capable of influencing rates of inflammation and driving the progression of atherosclerosis. But, not all fats are created equal. “Brown” fat is linked to a lower risk of heart disease (and doesn’t promote the development of atherosclerosis), while “white” fat is much more problematic. In a recent study published in the International Journal of Cardiology, researchers found 250 mg of aged garlic extract a day improved brown-to-white adipose tissue ratio – definitely good news for those battling obesity and heart disease. Another “plus” for garlic is that it is a prebiotic food, meaning that it provides nourishment for the community of bacteria in the gut. In this way, garlic improves the richness and diversity of the gut microbiome, which is linked with anti-obesity effects, immune system health – even mood and cognition. In one study, three months of garlic supplementation increased the number of beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria in the intestines. Get More Garlic in Your Life Garlic – whether raw, sauteed, or roasted – is such a beloved part of many cuisines that it’s hard to imagine certain dishes without it. Of course, shrimp scampi, garlic bread, pizza, and pasta are all foods enhanced by using garlic. But, healthier ways to use garlic include: hummus, mashed sweet potatoes, or “intensified” marinades and dressings. Some garlic lovers advise nibbling on mint leaves, sucking on cloves, or chewing fennel seeds after a meal to reduce objectionable garlic breath. Others swear by diluted apple cider vinegar. Or, you can bypass the problem by using aged garlic extract, an odor-free alternative. (Another advantage of aged garlic extract is that it reduces the chances of gastrointestinal upset that can accompany garlic supplementation). Natural health experts typically advise 300 mg to 1,000 mg of aged garlic extract a day but check first with your integrative doctor before supplementing. Research continues to demonstrate that aged garlic extract can benefit heart health. When you consider that garlic also boosts immune system function, reduces the risk of infection, and helps to remove heavy metals from the body, it’s clear that the humble garlic clove deserves a place of honor in your health regimen.

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DMN, CNS – What is it about sweet and spicy flavors that make them go so well together? It’s like a kick in the butt for your taste buds. Sweet and spicy chicken is a popular takeout order at my local Chinese restaurant, but I prefer making my own version at home — and now you can, too. This is my favorite recipe when I can’t decide if I’m craving something sweet or just some heat; it’s got the best of both worlds! To really make these flavors pop, I like using boneless, skinless and organic chicken thighs. If you normally cook with only chicken breasts, prepare to have your mind blown. Chicken thighs, even with no skin or bones, stay super juicy while cooking, so there’s no fear of dry, rubbery chicken. With just a handful of ingredients, we’re going to prepare some of the zestiest chicken around with this Sweet & Spicy Baked Chicken Thighs recipe. How to Make Sweet & Spicy Baked Chicken Thighs We’ll begin by heating up the oven to 400 F and greasing a baking dish with coconut oil. Pat the thighs with a paper towel, removing any extra moisture, and place them in the baking dish. Sprinkle the 5-spice powder on them generously, flipping them to get both sides. While the chicken waits for your next move, in a medium bowl, let’s mix together the sweet part of this dish. Combine the diced and nutrition-rich apple, sweet potatoes, raisins, garlic and orange juice and zest. I don’t bother peeling the potatoes beforehand. They’re full of nutritional benefits, increase the fiber content and it makes life easier; just scrub and chop. Spread the mix over the chicken; as it all cooks, the juices will release onto the thighs, infusing them with flavor. Cover the baking dish with aluminum and bake the chicken for 35 minutes. When the timer goes off, uncover the dish, sprinkle on more 5-spice powder and return to the oven for another 5 minutes. That way, we’ll get a nice, crispy coating on the chicken. When time’s up, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes, so all the juices resettle, before serving. This dish is great because it basically cooks itself along with a side dish; who can turn down those sweet potatoes, after all? Serve with a side salad and your entire dinner is ready! If you want to turn up the heat even more, add some crushed red pepper flakes along with the 5-spice powder. Most apples will work well with this baked chicken thighs recipe, but I’m partial to organic Pink Lady, Braeburn and Jonathan varieties. Just like the potatoes, keep the skins on. Why complicate things? Sweet & Spicy Baked Chicken Thighs Recipe DESCRIPTION Sweet and spicy chicken is a popular takeout order at my local Chinese restaurant, but I prefer making my own version at home — and now you can, too. INGREDIENTS 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs 2 tablespoons Chinese 5-spice powder 1 sweet-tart apple, diced 1 sweet potato, diced ¼ cup raisins 3 cloves garlic, pressed or minced zest and juice of one orange 2 tablespoons rum (optional) INSTRUCTIONS Heat the oven to 400 F. Grease a glass 13 x 9 baking dish with coconut oil. Pat the chicken thighs dry with paper towel. Place the chicken thighs in the baking dish and sprinkle both sides generously with the 5-spice powder. In a medium bowl, mix the apple, sweet potato, raisins, garlic and orange zest together. Spread this mixture over the top of the chicken. In a small bowl, mix together the orange juice and optional rum. Pour this mixture over the top of the chicken dish. Cover the dish and bake for 35 minutes, or until the chicken thighs have an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Uncover, sprinkle on more 5-spice powder and return to the oven, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. NOTES Most apples will work well with this baked chicken thighs recipe, but I’m partial to organic Pink Lady, Braeburn and Jonathan varieties. Just like the potatoes, keep the skins on.

Edit Lang via NaturalHealth365 – According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates, in the U.S. alone, over 34 million people live with diabetes, and another 88 million with prediabetes. Add the two numbers together, and you end up with a “public health crisis.” It’s not a coincidence that the medical community often refers to diabetes as the “silent killer.” Interestingly, the disease takes years to develop with the majority missing the early warning signs. Tragically, when diagnosed, most people are shocked to learn they have the disease. Late diagnosis can lead to a host of unwanted complications like, heart disease, stroke, kidney and nerve disorders, vision loss, and other health issues. While medications are the primary way to reduce diabetes-related complications, research suggests that adding garlic to your prescription protocol offers additional benefits against diabetes-related adverse health effects. Of course, whenever possible, the best case scenario would be to work with a qualified (integrative) healthcare provider that can help you to eliminate the need for toxic medications. Garlic Lowers Blood Glucose Levels, Studies Show In a clinical study, researchers put garlic extract to the test to see how effective it was in improving blood sugar control. They also assessed its cholesterol-lowering ability in type 2 diabetic patients. While the trial was smaller-scale and only included 60 patients, the findings were notable. The trial included patients with Fasting blood glucose (FBG) of at least 126 mg/dL A1C over 6.5% Once enrolled, the study authors divided patients into two groups: Group 1 received: metformin only (two or three times a day) Group 2 received: metformin (two or three times a day) plus 250 mg garlic extract twice daily At the end of 12 weeks, the group taking the garlic extract saw a more significant FBG reduction than the group taking metformin alone. A meta-analysis of seven other trials with 513 patients also confirmed garlic’s favorable effect on fasting blood sugar. Improved fasting blood sugar was not the only benefit of adding garlic to metformin. The metformin plus garlic powder group also experienced a greater reduction in postprandial glucose (PPG) levels. Garlic REDUCES Cholesterol Levels and Slows Down the Progression of Heart Disease in People With Diabetes Having to face the increased risk of severe adverse health effects is one of the most challenging aspects of living with diabetes. To reduce the risk of heart disease, people with diabetes should pay close attention to maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Once again, garlic demonstrated its cholesterol-lowering effect in the same 12-week study. Adding garlic to metformin yielded: greater reduction of total cholesterol, triglyceride level, and LDL (bad cholesterol) more substantial increase in HDL (good cholesterol) Dozens of studies on garlic confirm similarly impressive results. Evidence also shows that garlic can slow and stall heart disease. One study compared garlic powder tablets to placebo for three months. Interestingly, while the placebo group got worse, heart disease progression slowed in the garlic group. But Wait, That’s Not All! Garlic Reduces Inflammation and Lowers Blood Pressure Sadly, garlic rarely gets credit for all the goodness it offers. It improves our health in countless ways and guards against various diseases. Most people do not know that garlic has medicinal properties and is a rich source of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C, vitamin B6, and minerals such as selenium, iron, and calcium are all part of this medicinal plant. Likely the most remarkable compound of the plant is allicin that is produced when you crush or chop garlic. Allicin is the major biologically active component of garlic that reduces inflammation and offers antioxidant benefits. Researchers also believe that garlic’s ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure is also due to its allicin content. As a side note: wouldn’t it be wonderful if we saw more researchers comparing the results generated from groups of people only taking natural substances compared to their “medication groups?” I guess the pharmaceutical industry wouldn’t be too happy about that kind of work. Super Simple Ways to Reap Garlic’s Benefits for Diabetes If you enjoy the intense taste of raw garlic, eat 1 to 2 cloves daily to get its health benefits. You can enjoy garlic in various ways. But, for maximum benefit, it’s best to eat it raw and fresh. You can mince or press garlic and sprinkle it on top of your salads or veggie dishes. Try flavoring your rice and quinoa dishes with garlic to make it a regular part of your daily diet. While raw garlic is best, garlic can also offer benefits when cooked. Add it to soups, steamed, and stir-fried recipes. There are several other simple ways to consume garlic. One is by blending it into your favorite salad dressing or mixing it into your hummus and salsa recipes. However, if garlic’s strong flavor does not appeal to you, consider odor-free garlic capsules as an alternative.

Joy Jensen via NaturalHealth365 – There’s a reason you need to get your daily servings of veggies. They’re packed with nutrients essential to your health, and every vegetable has its own unique properties and benefits. For example, onions – which are in the same family as chives, garlic, and shallots – are well-known for making you cry when you chop them. But, there’s a lot more to these flavorful, and sometimes tear-inducing, veggies. A closer look at this superfood finds that the nutrients in onions offer essential immune-boosting, inflammation-fighting, and antiviral properties. For centuries, people have used onions for their medicinal properties, and studies continue to back up the powerful health benefits of this superfood. Why Onions Can Improve Heart Health and Help You Avoid Cancer Cell Growth Onions pack in more than 25 different antioxidants, which help to inhibit oxidation – a process that can damage cells and contribute to many diseases. It’s all the different antioxidants in onions that enable them to fight against heart disease and cancer. When it comes to heart health, studies show that onions address multiple factors associated with improved heart health. Anthocyanins found in red onions have been proven to reduce the risk of a heart attack. Other studies show that regularly consuming onion lowers some of the risk factors for heart disease, such as high triglycerides and inflammation. The key compounds and chemicals found in onions can also help to prevent cancer, specifically liver and colon cancers. One meta-analysis concluded that individuals with a high intake of onions reduced their risk of colorectal cancer. Researchers discovered that the bitter, pungent onions seem to have the most potent anticancer benefits, helping to prevent cancer and, in some cases, even slow the spread of the disease. Additional health benefits of eating onions include: Improved bone density: Eating onions may help reduce bone loss and boost bone density in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Studies show women who eat onions more frequently had a lower risk of bone fractures. Blood sugar control: Especially helpful for individuals with prediabetes or diabetes, eating onions regularly helps control blood sugar levels. Boosts digestive health: Onions offer an excellent source of prebiotics and fiber, and both are essential for good gut health. Eating foods that contain prebiotics helps increase the probiotics present in your digestive system, giving your digestive health a boost. Easy Ways to Get More of This POWERFUL Superfood Into Your Diet Onions don’t just have a powerful nutritional punch; they add plenty of flavor to many of your favorite dishes, too. Get more onions in your diet, and you’ll boost your intake of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. A few easy ways you can eat more onions to reap the health benefits include: Adding cooked onions to other veggies for delicious side dishes Use raw (chopped) onions in guacamole Add raw onions to salads Sauté onions and top your favorite protein with them Use onions along with garlic as a base for your soups and stocks Top your Mexican dishes like tacos with raw onions Toss onions into your favorite stir fry dish Sources for this article include: LifeExtension.com, Healthline.com, NaturalHealth365.com To read the original article click here.

Karen Sanders via NaturalHealth365 – By the end of 2020, there will be 1.8 million new cancer cases expected and over 600,000 cancer deaths, in the United States alone. Yet, even conventionally-trained scientists (and doctors) admit that lifestyle changes can help us to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Simply put, there is a lot we can do to avoid cancer! To be clear: Of all the factors believed to contribute to the development of this deadly disease – among them smoking, excessive sun exposure, genetics, alcohol use and the overexposure to environmental toxins – diet is among the most significant. How to Stop the Growth of Cancer Cells Naturally Scientific research confirms that a diet laden with processed foods, sugar, additives and pesticides can set the stage for the development of cancer, while a daily menu rich in fresh, organic fruits and vegetables can provide life-prolonging benefits – including the detoxification of carcinogens and the reduced risk of oxidative stress. Although antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, broccoli and grapefruit seem to get the lion’s share of scientific credit for their disease-fighting effects, the vegetable drawer is not the only source of beneficial nutrients. For additional chemopreventive “superfoods,” you need look no further than your kitchen spice rack. Curcumin Reduces Inflammation and Can Target Cancer Cells Scientifically known as curcuma longa, bright yellow turmeric powder gets its healing properties from its content of a polyphenol known as curcumin. Over 3,000 scientific studies have been conducted to date on curcumin – which has potent antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Curcumin is also a powerful antiproliferative agent that has been shown in laboratory studies to keep cancer cells from spreading. In a study of patients with advanced colorectal cancer, a daily dose of 3.6 grams of curcumin caused a dramatic 62 percent decrease in pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2 production. In another influential clinical trial, curcumin inhibited the activation of inflammatory COX-2 in multiple myeloma patients. In yet another clinical study, 8,000 milligrams of curcumin taken for 3 months caused significant improvement of precancerous lesions in patients with uterine cervical neoplasm. What Does Science Say About Curcumin? In a review published in 2008 in Cancer Letters, the authors noted that curcumin interferes with multiple cell signaling pathways, and is active against gastrointestinal, breast, lung and ovarian cancers, along with squamous cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. The authors of a 2011 review published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics noted that curcumin, by interfering with growth factor receptors and cell adhesion molecules responsible for tumor growth and metastasis, works at the molecular level to slow the production of tumors. By suppressing a host of inflammatory substances, including transcription factor NF-kappa B cells – which are gene-altering inflammatory markers linked with the development of cancer – COX-2, cyclin D1 and interleukin, curcumin also attacked the inflammatory process that spurs cancer proliferation. The authors pointed out that curcumin is non-toxic and features minimal side effects; they advised that it be utilized as an adjunct cancer therapy. Garlic Causes “Programmed Suicide” in Cancer Cells Garlic, or allium sativum, has long been credited with antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal and antiseptic effects. Now, it turns out that this hearty root vegetable is also a staunch cancer fighter. Researchers found that a garlic phytochemical known as diallydisulfide can cause apoptosis – programmed cell death – in human colon cancer cells. Like curcumin, garlic also inhibits inflammatory COX-2 and NF-kappa B. In addition, diallydisulfide reduces risk of inflammation and cancer by scavenging harmful free radicals and increasing levels of glutathione – a powerful antioxidant produced by the body. Finally, diallydisulfide pumps up the action of a pair of enzymes – glutathione S-transferase and catalase – responsible for preventing chromosomal damage. Other beneficial nutrients in garlic include the essential mineral selenium, a powerful antioxidant, and assorted cancer-fighting and antioxidant carotenoids, including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) cites several studies which demonstrated that people who regularly consumed raw or cooked garlic had a 30 percent reduction in their risk of colorectal cancer – a very significant decrease. To get the maximum chemopreventive benefits, select whole bulbs of fresh, organic garlic. Avoid garlic paste and powder, UMMC advises 2 to 4 grams a day of fresh, minced garlic. Can Fennel Rival the Effects of Pharmaceutical Cancer Therapies? Fennel, scientifically known as foeniculum vulgare, is closely related to parsley and dill, and features a pale, greenish bulb with frilly, feathery leaves. The piquant flavor of this refreshing herb is strongly reminiscent of licorice. Fennel is packed with antioxidant flavonoids such as quercetin and rutin. However, its primary active constituent is its volatile oil, which contains the phytochemical anethole. Like garlic and turmeric, fennel prevents the activation of NF-kappa B cells. Fennel’s plentiful content of fiber, which helps to filter out carcinogenic toxins from the digestive tract, helps to protect its aficionados against colon cancer. In a study of mice with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma, anethole had strong antitumor activity. It increased survival time, decreased tumors and directly killed cancer cells – causing improvements on a level with the pharmaceutical cancer drug cyclophosphamide. Other cell studies showed anethole acts against human breast cancer cells, and is potentially effective against lung cancer. For maximum health benefits, opt for fresh, organic fennel. The flavorful leaves may be used as salad greens. Of course, you shouldn’t try to treat cancer with turmeric, garlic or fennel unless you are being supervised by an experienced medical doctor. Especially when dealing with a serious health condition, always work with a qualified healthcare provider to design the best plan of action for your particular needs. Having said that, when it comes to detoxifying the body, reducing damage from free radicals, and warding off cancer, this trio of herbs really can “spice up your life” – in a good way.

Christine Ruggeri, CHHC via Dr. Axe – Anticoagulant medications have been implicated in serious adverse reactions, with countless case reports indicating the use of these drugs can lead to hospital admission from issues like excessive bleeding. Because of their potential for harm, being aware of natural blood thinners as potential alternatives is critical. Blood clots are among the most preventable types of blood conditions. That’s because they can be prevented with simple lifestyle and dietary changes. Adding natural blood thinners to your diet and wellness routine can have a tremendous impact, without the fear of adverse side effects. What Are Blood Thinners? Blood thinners are used to prevent the development of life-threatening blood clots that can cause serious health events, like heart attack and stroke. Although blood clots are necessary to prevent blood loss during injury and to allow for wound healing, clot formation in the bloodstream can lead to dangerous complications. Blood thinners are commonly prescribed to patients with certain cardiovascular conditions, like deep vein thrombosis, irregular heart rhythm and blood vessel disease. Some herbs serve as natural blood thinners because of their anticoagulant effects as well. Types/Varieties For people with certain blood or heart conditions, using blood thinners is necessary. For most Americans in these circumstances, anticoagulants are prescribed by doctors as a preventative measure. Anticoagulants or “blood thinners” are medications that are used to prevent your blood from clotting or allowing existing clots to grow. These drugs slow down the blood-clotting process. Some examples of anticoagulants include: warfarin heparin dabigitran apixaban rivoraxaban There are also antiplatelet drugs, like aspirin, that work by preventing blood cells (or platelets) from clumping together and creating a clot. Some of these medications are synthetic substances that are derived from chemicals found in natural blood thinners. Cayenne, cinnamon and ginger, for example, contain powerful compounds that are used to create anticoagulants. In some situations, using these herbs as a safer blood thinner is possible, but people with serious concerns of future heart conditions, like heart attack or stroke, must speak to their doctors before using a natural alternative to blood-thinner medications. Top 8 Natural Blood Thinners 1. Turmeric Turmeric acts as a natural anticoagulant, and it has anti-platelet effects. A study published in BMB Reports indicates that curcumin, the beneficial polyphenol in turmeric, inhibited thrombin, a protease that plays a role in blood coagulation. Researchers concluded that daily consumption of the curry spice may help maintain anticoagulant status. 2. Cayenne Pepper Cayenne contains salicylate, a natural blood-thinning agent that’s valued for its anti-thrombosis effects. On top of that, it also contains capsaicin, which is proven to possess lipid-lowering, antihypertensive, antidiabetic and anti-obesity properties in several studies. For these reasons, cayenne is often taken in capsule form to promote cardiovascular health and blood circulation. 3. Cinnamon Cinnamon, especially cassia cinnamon, is rich in coumarin, a powerful anticoagulant that’s actually used to make warfarin. That said, research suggests that using cinnamon supplements for an extended period of time can be problematic, possibly leading to liver issues from the increased coumarin consumption. Instead of using “true cinnamon” supplements, you’re better off consuming cinnamon in your normal diet by adding it to meals and beverages. 4. Ginger Like cayenne, ginger contains salicylate, a chemical that has been studied for its ability to prevent thrombosis. Studies indicate that salicylate induces moderate anticoagulation and may prevent venous thrombosis without causing bleeding complications. The use of ginger for its blood-thinning properties is gaining popularity, as people seek more natural approaches to conventional anticoagulants. There is research cautioning users who combine oral ginger supplements and warfarin, however. Although the data on this was deemed insufficient, be sure to discuss this with your health care professional before combining treatments. 5. Garlic Consuming garlic daily may be useful for preventing thrombosis. Studies suggest that garlic works as an anticoagulant. One study evaluated the safety of using garlic extract with warfarin, a commonly prescribed blood thinner. Researchers found that garlic extract is relatively safe and poses no serious risk for patients on warfarin or oral anticoagulation therapy, as long as they are being monitored by health care professional. 6. Vitamin E Vitamin E is a natural blood thinner because of its anticoagulant effects. Studies support that vitamin E has anti-clotting activity and works as a potent blood thinner. Supplementing with vitamin E and consuming vitamin E foods can help prevent diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Some of the best vitamin E-rich foods include avocado, almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, broccoli and mango. 7. Exercise Staying active helps prevent blood clots from forming, so it’s important to move your body and exercise regularly. It is widely accepted that daily physical activity is associated with improved cardiovascular health because of its positive effects on blood pressure, blood circulation, cholesterol and insulin sensitivity. Try to add at least 30 minutes of exercise per day into your schedule. This can include any type of movement that gets your heart pumping, including up-hill walking, yoga, weight lifting and biking. Be sure to drink plenty of water while exercising to stay hydrated as well. It’s also important to avoid sitting for an extended period of time. Be sure to get up, move around and stretch throughout the day to promote blood circulation. 8. Helichrysum Essential Oil Although research on humans is limited, studies on rats suggest that using helichrysum essential oil topically has vasorelaxant effects, which means that it relaxes vessels that carry blood and may help reduce high blood pressure. How to Add to Diet It’s easy to add these natural blood thinners to your diet. They can be included in meals to add flavor and nutritional benefits. Another way to consume these herbs and spices is with tea. Turmeric tea and ginger tea can be made at home and added to your daily health routine. These herbs are also available in capsule or extract forms, but if you’re going to supplement with higher doses like this, be sure to discuss it with your doctor beforehand. In addition to adding natural blood thinners to your diet to reduce the risk of blood clots, it’s important to eat a healthy, well-balanced and nutrient-rich diet. Maintaining a healthy weight and reducing inflammation are essential, as they promote healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you should eat to boost your overall health: colorful vegetables dark leafy greens fruits legumes whole grains omega-3 foods healthy fats In addition to bringing heart-healthy foods into your diet, it’s also essential to avoid foods that cause your body harm. This includes foods made with artificial sweetener, sugar and refined carbohydrates, diet sodas, baked goods made with trans fats, and excessive alcohol consumption. Risks and Side Effects Before using natural blood thinners to prevent blood clots, speak to your health care provider, and be sure that these foods and supplements do not interfere with any of your current medications. Is thin blood bad? Like all things related to health, you need a balance. Your blood can’t become so thin that it fails to form clots and you risk excessive bleeding. What vitamins or foods should be avoided when on blood thinners? This depends on what type of blood thinners you use, but it can be problematic to combine anticoagulant medications with natural blood thinners like turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, garlic and cayenne peppers. The issue is thinning the blood too much, so before supplementing with these herbs, speak to your doctor. Eating these herbs in normal food portions, however, should not be an issue. These natural options may not be as effective as blood-thinning medications, so if you’re relying on these to prevent an existing health concern, consult your doctor first to be sure it’s the right treatment method for your needs. Conclusion Natural blood thinners help prevent blood clots that can lead to serious health events like heart attack or stroke. Oftentimes, conventional anticoagulants are prescribed to prevent dangerous blood clotting, but many of these medications have adverse side effects. When it’s appropriate and advised by a health care professional, using natural blood thinners, such as cinnamon, ginger, cayenne pepper and garlic, has antithrombosis and anticoagulant effects, boosting cardiovascular health and overall wellness.
