					<description><![CDATA[<p>Al Sears, MD, CNS &#8211; I enjoy drinking a nice glass of red wine with my grass-fed steak dinner. And the health benefits are an added bonus! But, it turns out the seeds from red grapes have even more health benefits than wine. These seeds – the same ones my brothers, sister, and I used to spit out at each other whenever we ate grapes – contain disease fighters so potent I call them super-antioxidants. In fact, a recent study from the National Institutes of Health backs up what I’ve been telling my patients for years… Grape seed extract’s antioxidant capacity can reduce the inflammatory process at the root of today’s chronic diseases. But, its regenerative benefits go even further… A breakthrough study published in the journal Nature Metabolism recently revealed grape seed extract successfully prolonged the lifespan of old mice by 9%.1 Researchers focused on a phenomenon known as cellular senescence – the process during which your cells lose function as your body ages. Specialized compounds called senolytics destroy these rogue cells, allowing the body to repair the damage. In the breakthrough study, researchers discovered a previously unidentified senolytic derived from a compound in grape seed extract called procyanidin C1, or PCC1. This newly discovered senolytic induces a type of programmed cell death called apoptosis in senescent cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. In the new study, the mice were exposed to doses of radiation that caused them to develop abnormal features such as significant amounts of gray hair. They also lost muscle mass and suffered damage to their kidneys, livers, and lungs. But once the compound in the grape seed extract was introduced, this damage was reversed. According to the study authors, there’s no reason to believe that this compound can’t do the same for human beings. It’s just one more advantage to add to a growing list of benefits we get from these seeds. To date, they’ve been proven to: Dramatically reduce the risk of prostate cancer2 Improve blood sugar and insulin sensitivity3 Slow brain aging and increase cognitive function4 Boost HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure5 Restore cardiovascular health6 Fight infections and kill germs7 Make Grape Seed Extract Part of Your Life There are two distinct ways to add the seeds of grapes to your diet. Grapeseed extract comes from the small seeds (and occasionally the skins) of red grapes – the same kind that is pressed to make wine. Grapeseed oil comes from the same seeds – but after the juice is pressed. Supplement With Grape Seed Extract: I recommend taking 250 mg of grape seed extract twice per day. It’s available in capsules, tablets, or in liquid form. Look for products that are standardized to 40 to 80% proanthocyanidin polyphenols. Cook with Grapeseed oil: Grapeseed oil is a joy to cook with. It smokes at a much higher temperature than olive oil – which means you can sauté and pan-sear your favorite meats, fish, and vegetables without burning anything. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 &#8211; The list of advantages of consuming foods rich in antioxidants continues to grow.  But scientists have evidence that one of these antioxidant-rich foods – pomegranate – may reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease and reverse plaque buildup in the arterial walls. This is critical news not only for consumers but for scientists whose previous study findings suggested that antioxidants could only reduce plaque buildup, not actually reverse the damage. Pomegranate Juice Improves Carotid Artery Health and Lowers Blood Pressure Results of an Israeli study show that pomegranate very likely reduces existing plaque buildup in the arteries and doesn’t just slow its development. Israeli scientists studied patients known to exhibit narrowing of their carotid arteries due to atherosclerosis.  The research focused on the carotid artery, found in the neck because it is behind approximately 80 percent of the body’s blood flow to the brain. When a portion of these patients was provided with pomegranate juice over a year, the incidence of atherosclerotic lesions in the common carotid artery was reduced in size by 35 percent.  This is in stark contrast to patients in the control group, whose atherosclerotic lesions increased by 9 percent. Blood analysis on the group receiving the pomegranate juice showed an increase in antioxidant activity of 130 percent compared with levels before the study’s start.  These patients also saw an average drop in systolic blood pressure of 21 percent following one year of the fruit’s juice consumption. Pomegranate also safeguards low-density lipoprotein from harmful oxidation and has been shown to lower blood pressure.  The researchers concluded that supplementing with just 2 ounces of pomegranate juice every day reduced blood pressure because the activity of the angiotensin-converting enzyme was reduced. By the way, many medications used to treat high blood pressure work in much the same way, raising the strong possibility that supplementing a diet with pomegranate juice consistently could help patients maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Could This Fruit Help Prevent Cancer? In addition to its remarkable ability to protect your heart, pomegranate also appears to combat several of the more common forms of cancer, including prostate cancer.  It works by hampering the progression of cancer cells due to ellagitannins – the very substances that give the fruit its color. Researchers found that pomegranate extract blocked the growth of human prostate cancer cells while also enhancing apoptosis or programmed cancer cell death.  The fruit appears to support the expression of a protein known to accelerate cancer cell death while hampering the expression of a different protein that gets in the way of cancer cell death.  In addition, in a 2021 clinical study published in The Prostate, researchers found that pomegranate fruit extract contains bioactive compounds capable of reducing oxidative stress. As you can see, pomegranate contains multiple compounds that help prevent cancer and support a healthy heart.  So whether you eat the whole fruit, drink pomegranate juice, or take pomegranate extract in supplement form, you have various ways to tap into its many health benefits. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Christine Ruggeri, CHHC via Dr. Axe &#8211; Almost half a million adults participated in a six-year study to determine the association between tea intake and mortality. The results suggest that drinking at least two cups of black tea daily may reduce your risk of death from common conditions like heart disease and stroke. Study Findings: Black Tea for Longevity A study published in September in Annals of Internal Medicine evaluated the associations of black tea consumption with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Researchers from the National Cancer Institute provided baseline questionnaires to 498,043 men and women from the U.K. Participants indicated their tea intake and then conducted follow-ups after a median period of 11.2 years. Results show that higher tea intake was modestly associated with lower all-cause mortality risk among adults who drank two or more cups of black tea daily. Tea consumption also reduced the risk of cause-specific mortality from cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease and stroke. Researchers also found that results of tea drinking were similar whether or not participants also consumed hot coffee, and genetic scores for caffeine metabolism did not impact the findings. What It Means This isn’t the first time that tea consumption has been evaluated for its effects on mortality, but usually researchers study green tea because of its antioxidant properties. Some studies suggest that the association between black tea consumption and mortality is weak, with no clear trends across categories of consumption. However, we know that black tea is also considered a high-antioxidant food, and evidence that black tea can lower mortality risk, as indicated in this recent study, is promising. This study suggests that drinking two cups of black tea daily can have a significant impact on your health, helping reduce your risk of death generally and when associated with common conditions like cardiovascular disease. Other Black Tea Benefits How does black tea lower mortality risk? It’s loaded in polyphenols and antioxidants that impact several aspects of human health. Black tea benefits include its ability to help: lower blood pressure improve cholesterol levels fight cancer reduce risk of diabetes improve blood sugar levels reduce risk of stroke relieve digestive issues fight bacterial infections reduce cortisol and other stress hormones improve mental alertness alleviate headache pain To experience the perks of drinking black tea, be sure to let the leaves (which are ideally organic and loose) steep for at least two minutes. This ensures that you get the beneficial compounds in your tea that fight oxidative stress and support longevity. Conclusion A study published in September in Annals of Internal Medicine found that black tea consumption was linked to a reduced risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Michael Greger M.D. FACLM via Nutrition Facts &#8211; Blueberries can significantly improve cognitive performance within hours of consumption. When you search the medical literature for studies on berries, papers like this pop up: “A 3-Week-Old With an Isolated ‘Blueberry Muffin’ Rash.” Or, you’ll see pictures of strawberry tongues or read about a way to describe the appearance of stool, though “stools truly resembling currant jelly” are not very common. What is it with pathologists’ love affair with food terminology? The grossest may be the way amoeba chest infections are described—“expectoration of ‘anchovy sauce-like’ pus,” which sounds gross even without the pus. There are actual studies on berry supplementation, such as how they can mitigate the negative effects of a high saturated fat diet on the brain and behavior, but that one in particular was in mice. Maybe a better way to mitigate would be not feeding your pet mouse a stick of butter in the first place. Then, there are studies of proprietary berry-based nutraceutical supplements, purported to improve cognitive performance. At 1:11 in my video Flashback Friday: Benefits of Blueberries for the Brain and below, you can see how the supplement group has a steeper rise in cognitive performance over the placebo group. Looks impressive, right? Ah, but old hats will instantly recognize this as the timeless trick featured in the 1950s classic, How to Lie with Statistics. If you look closely at the chart, you’ll notice the Y axis does not start at zero. That’s to inflate the appearance. When you correct the graph and start that axis at zero, you can see the effect doesn’t look quite so impressive. There are studies of actual berries on actual humans, but when they’re funded by berry industry trade groups, you get studies like this: “An afternoon snack of berries reduces subsequent energy intake compared to an isoenergetic confectionary snack.” Sounds great, but what’s an “isoenergetic confectionary”? Candy. Researchers compared strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries to a handful of Jelly Babies, which are just like coated gummy bears. Do berries offer so little that you have to compare them to candy to make them look good? You may remember I’ve talked before about that famous Harvard study where berry eating appeared to delay brain aging by up to two-and-a-half years. You don’t know if it’s cause-and-effect, though, until you put it to the test. Researchers found that “blueberry supplementation improves memory in older adults” in just 12 weeks’ time, but that was feeding them up to six cups of wild blueberries a day. Now, this was a proof-of-concept pilot study just to see if they could get any effect. We just didn’t have any studies using more realistic doses…until now. What about just one daily cup of blueberries? Researchers found that “the addition of easily achievable quantities of blueberry to the diets of older adults can improve some aspects of cognition,” like long-term memory. In terms of the number of errors, the placebo group got worse, and the blueberry group got better, as you can see below and at 3:03 in my video. You can even correlate the cognitive improvements with enhanced brain activation using fancy brain scan technology to actually visualize the improved blood flow to those same regions of the brain caused by the blueberry consumption. Does it work in kids, too? Well, “blueberry treatments have shown positive effects on cognition in both animals and adult humans,” but do those these benefits transfer to children—human children? Researchers put together a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study comparing about one cup of blueberries to two cups and no blueberries at all. What did they find? “Importantly, across all measures, cognitive performance improved,” and the more berries, the better. This wasn’t after 12 weeks of eating berries, either, but within hours of just a single meal with blueberries. Sounds like we should add blueberries to breakfast, especially on days our kids are having their exams. Wait a second, healthy and delicious? That’s what plant-based eating is all about. Key Takeaways Berries have been studied in animals, the findings of proprietary berry-based supplements have been inflated, and industry-funded trials of actual berries on actual people have tended to compare the fruits to candy. These are some examples of what’s found on berries in the scientific literature. Researchers determined that up to six cups of wild blueberries a day improves memory in older adults in 12 weeks, but the dose is unrealistic. When adding just one daily cup of blueberries to the diets of older adults, researchers found improvements in their long-term memory and some other aspects of cognition. The cognitive improvements in the older adults were also correlated with blueberry consumption via advanced brain scan technology. In children, researchers found that cognitive performance improved “across all measures,” and the more berries, the better. Sadly, pharmaceutical drugs to address Alzheimer’s disease have had underwhelming results – and feature toxic side effects.  Now, more than ever, scientists are racing to find non-toxic, natural interventions that can help preserve cognitive function and delay the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.  The latest research reveals a “colorful” ray (or rainbow) of hope.  A new review published in Nutrients details the power of anthocyanins – natural plant pigments that give blueberries their deep indigo hue – to promote cognitive and cardiovascular health. Anthocyanins Are Powerful Antioxidants That Can Battle Inflammation and Oxidative Stress Anthocyanins, which range from deep red to purplish/blue in color, exist in plants to attract insects and animals and facilitate pollination.  However, these intensely-colored compounds also protect against oxidative stress, temperature extremes, and the damaging effects of UV light.  It is this protective ability that has drawn researchers’ attention. In the review published in Nutrients, the authors evaluated the beneficial effects of anthocyanins on cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases and reported that anthocyanins might maintain cardiovascular and brain health by reducing oxidative stress in humans.  (This type of stress is caused by harmful free radicals, which can be generated naturally in response to such normal activities as exercise.  Free radicals are also created by less benign factors – such as environmental toxins, cigarette smoke, alcohol, and excessive ultraviolet light).  By scavenging and neutralizing free radicals, anthocyanins can provide significant health benefits. Cyanidin-3 Promotes Heart Health Through Multiple Mechanisms The more scientists examined the effects of anthocyanins, the more benefits they discovered.  For example, the team noted that an anthocyanidin known as cyanidin 3 helps to fight the endothelial inflammation that can trigger heart disease.  This compound preserves the availability of nitric oxide – which has a beneficial effect on endothelial health – while appearing to make blood platelets less “sticky,” allowing for more free flow of circulation through arteries and keeping them clear and healthy. In one placebo-controlled study cited by the researchers, 150 participants with high cholesterol were given 320 mg a day of anthocyanins for 24 weeks and experienced reduced levels of C-reactive protein (an inflammatory enzyme linked to heart disease).  In yet another study published in Nutrition, Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases, anthocyanins were shown to improve cholesterol levels. Other medical authorities have gone “on the record” supporting anthocyanins’ beneficial effects.  The prestigious Cleveland Clinic acknowledges that anthocyanins can reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure and decrease cardiovascular inflammation. Preserve Healthy Cognition With Blueberries and Other Anthocyanin-Rich Foods Anthocyanins have now become a topic of interest as a natural preventive/therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative disease.  Scientists report that they have the ability to protect neurons against oxidative stress, decrease pro-inflammatory chemicals in the brain and modulate cell signaling pathways.  There is even some evidence that anthocyanins may help to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, a brain chemical that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter needed for memory and learning. In one exciting study published in the European Journal of Nutrition, older adults with mild and moderate dementia who drank a daily dose of anthocyanin-rich cherry juice experienced improvements in memory and speech.  Many natural health experts believe that blueberries and other bluish-purplish foods have the “right stuff” to help preserve cognitive function into old age – and slow the onset of devastating neurodegenerative diseases. Anthocyanins Support a Balanced Microbiome But, the benefits of anthocyanins don’t stop with the cardiovascular system and brain.  When these pigments are broken down in the intestine, they release products that modulate the microbiome, or community of gut bacteria.  When properly balanced, this important group of microbes plays an essential role in normal immune function, healthy metabolism, and even mood and cognition. These free radicals can then bind and damage proteins, cell membranes and DNA of the plant. Fortunately, phytonutrients simultaneously develop to shield the plant from such damage as well as provide its color, flavor and smell. What do phytonutrients do for the body? They protect us in much the same way that they do plants. Since we are exposed to radiation and various environmental elements such as UV light, we need phytonutrients fight free radical damage. How do we get them? By “eating the rainbow,” meaning including lots of different vegetables, fruits, herbs and other antioxidant-foods in our diets. What Are Phytonutrients? The prefix phyto is of Greek origin and means “plant.” It’s used because phytonutrients are obtained only from plants, which have been cultivated and used to prevent and treat various human diseases for centuries. The terms phytonutrients and phytochemicals are often used interchangeably. Many are also antioxidants, so you’ll hear them go by this name too. The American Cancer Society defines phytonutrients (or phytochemicals) as: Plant compounds like carotenoids, lycopene, resveratrol and phytosterols that are thought to have health-protecting qualities. They are found in plants such as fruits and vegetables, or things made from plants, like tofu or tea. Phytochemicals are best taken in by eating the foods that contain them rather than taking the supplements or pills. Why do we need phytonutrients? They support our immune systems and normal cellular activity, while also defending against harmful effects of free radicals. For example, they can make cells less susceptible to becoming cancerous and stop damage from being done to the brain, heart and other major organs. Phytonutrients are actually the basis for more than 40 percent of medications today, including those used to treat pulmonary and heart diseases, diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer. They are also found in herbs and spices, as well as medicinal plants that have played a significant role in ancient history in promoting well-being. Health Benefits What are benefits of phytochemicals? Here are some of the reasons why antioxidant-rich foods are essential to include in a balanced, longevity-promoting diet. 1. Reduced Blood Pressure and Increased Vessel Dilation According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a diet rich in phytonutrients from fruits and vegetables, along with low-fat dairy foods and reduced saturated fat, can substantially lower blood pressure. The authors concluded that such a diet offers an additional nutritional approach to preventing and treating hypertension, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Phytonutrients such as lycopene, found in tomatoes, can help protect against heart disease. The same goes for phytonutrients found in dark cacao, called flavonoids, which can help prevent heart damage caused by aging and environmental toxins. There are even phenolic compounds in whole grains, such as wild rice and buckwheat, that have been shown to defend against cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. 2. Improved Vision and Skin Health The health benefits of blueberries, strawberries and red wine include providing the phytochemical group called anthocyanins, which are believed to help improve vision and protect eye health. The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that visual acuity can be markedly improved through eating certain foods with dark pigments. Their enhancement of night vision and overall vision has been particularly well-documented. Black currants, for example, have resulted in significantly improved night vision adaptation in human subjects, and similar benefits were gained after consuming bilberries. Because kale benefits include carotenoids, kale can produce a healthy, rosy glow to the skin. Kale and collard greens can help naturally treat glaucoma due to their lutein and zeaxanthin content as well. A diet rich in phytonutrients, such as tocopherols, bioflavonoids, lycopene and lutein, is thought to protect against sun damage and potentially help decrease one’s risk for skin cancer. 3. Decreased Inflammation and Enhanced Immune Support Proanthocyanidins and flavan-3-ols are phytochemicals that can help decrease disease-causing inflammation. They are found in foods such as red wine, grape juice extracts, cranberries and cocoa. Better known as resveratrol, studies have shown that these foods play a role in cancer prevention and help fight diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and more. One way they do this by lowering inflammatory responses. Many phytonutrient-rich foods — such as those that contain carotenoids, lycopene and bioflavonoids — have been shown to protect against cancer, including colon, prostate and breast cancer. For instance, broccoli contains sulforaphane and is associated with lowered breast cancer risk and improved survival rates. It can also decrease metastatic potential of lung cancer and can induce the liver’s detoxifying enzyme system. Some phytonutrients also possess antibacterial or antiviral properties that help fight certain infections and viruses. 4. Decreased LDL Cholesterol Named sulfides and thiols, these phytochemicals help decrease LDL cholesterol, which can build up in the arteries and increase risk of heart disease. These protective compounds can be found in aromatic veggies and herbs, such as nutrition-rich onions, leeks, garlic and olives. Cruciferous vegetables are also beneficial for maintaining normal cholesterol levels since they’re high in carotenoids, isothiocyanates, lignans and flavonoids — plus they’re rich in fiber and low in calories, a combination that can defend against obesity. 5. Prevent Cell Damage One of the largest classes of phytochemicals is terpenes, which include carotenoids. Carotenoids neutralize free radicals through a variety of foods, like nutrition-loaded tomatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, green and white teas, and other brightly colored fruits and vegetables. These foods help prevent cell damage and also enhance cellular communications. Additionally, they play a role in repairing DNA damage and in gene expressions, and they defend our bodies from effects of toxins, carcinogens and even too much UV light exposure. 6. Assist in Gut/Digestive Functions Seeds such as flaxseeds provide lignans, which are essential to gut flora and can help fight leaky gut syndrome and autoimmune disease. Types of Phytochemicals What are examples of phytochemicals? According to the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Agriculture, types of phytonutrients include: Flavonoids Terpenes Carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin Anthocyanins Flavones and isoflavones Catechins Isothiocyanates Organosulfures and aallyl sulfides Polyphenols Lignans and plant sterols Studies show that plants can contain more than 100,000 phytonutrients, one of the reasons nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day are recommended. Consuming a diet filled with variety can boost the effectiveness of phytonutrients because different plants and vegetables contain different types. When combined, they can have a more positive, synergistic effect. There are three broad classes of phytonutrients: Phytochemicals: Doctors at the University of California Davis state that “phytochemicals are a large group of plant-derived compounds hypothesized to be responsible for much of the disease protection conferred from diets high in fruits, vegetables, beans, cereals, and plant-based beverages such as tea and wine.” Medicinal Plants: These include well-known medicines, such as benefit-rich aloe verathat helps heal wounds, and arnica oil, which works as an anti-inflammatory. Herbs and Spices: The difference between herbs and spices is important. Herbs are fresh from the plant, and spices have been dried from the leaves of the plant. There are numerous herbs and spices that have therapeutic properties, such as dandelion tea that acts as a natural diuretic, black pepper (piper nigrum) that is used as a stimulant for the central nervous system and cardamom (elettaria cardamomum) that contains anti-obesity properties. Foods and How to Add to Diet On average, plant foods have about 64 times more antioxidants than animal foods. It’s best to source the plants from organic farms to avoid pesticides and maximize nutrient content. To further maximize nutrition, eat raw fruits and vegetables. (Ease into this as too much raw food cause digestive discomfort at first.) While studies are still in process to understand just how much we should consume, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association recommend consuming a diet filled with a variety of fruits and vegetables to ensure adequate amounts of much needed phytonutrients. They also recommend getting these phytonutrients from foods instead of through supplements. Which foods are high in phytonutrients? Some of the richest sources to eat regularly include: Kale, collard greens, spinach, watercress, dandelion greens and other leafy greens All types of onions Garlic Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower and other cruciferous veggies Flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, almonds and other nuts/seeds Beets Red bell peppers Herbs, such as peppermint, basil, cilantro, rosemary and cloves Pomegranate seeds Dark chocolate Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, gooseberries, açaí and other berries All types of teas, such as green, black, white and herbal teas Coffee Carrots, squash, yams and sweet potatoes Tomato and tomato juice Peaches, mangos, melons, citrus fruits and other fruits Legumes, such as dried beans, peas and lentils 100% whole grains, such as oats, wheat berries, brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, barley and organic corn Other medicinal plants, which are used in supplement form on the skin, that are high in phytonutrients include: Aloe vera Arnica Arrowroot Milk thistle Clove Dandelion Ginkgo biloba Ginseng Lavender Peppermint St. John’s wort Witch hazel Recipes: Keep in mind that cooking reduces the antioxidant content, especially through boiling and pressure cooking. Instead, lightly steamed is a good choice. Because phytonutrients are filled with antioxidants, stool size often increases, which has been associated with a lower cancer risk and reduced inflammation. Here are a few recipes high in phytonutrients: Raw Veggie Salad Grilled Vegetable Fries Roasted Beet Salad Risks and Side Effects Phytonutrient supplements are not the best way to obtain the same compounds found in whole foods. Phytonutrients work best when combined instead of separately as supplements. This is most easily done by eating a variety of foods on a regular basis, as many supplements only provide a portion of the phytochemicals. Some may experience side effects, such as an allergic reaction, when taking phytonutrient supplements. It is recommended that those with already existing medical problems take extra precautions if choosing to introduce phytonutrients by way of supplements. If you choose to eat a diet higher in fiber content than usual, consider taking it slowly so your body has time to adjust, especially if you choose to eat raw, cruciferous and high-fiber plants, such as kale, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Artemisinin is a drug derived from Artemisia annua, an Asian plant also known as: sweet wormwood sweet Annie annual mugwort annual absinthe qing hao qinghaosu The plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for 2,000 years to threat fevers, headaches, bleeding and malaria. Today, it’s used to make therapeutic capsules, teas, pressed juice, extracts and powders. A. annua is grown in Asia, India, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in temperate regions of America, Australia, Africa and tropical regions. Artemisinin is the active constituent of A. annua, and it’s used as a drug to treat malaria and has been researched for its efficacy against other conditions, including osteoarthritis, Chagas disease and cancer. Cancer Research Research on artemisinin for cancer suggests that the constituent may work as an alternative therapy, but more clinical studies are still needed. What’s known so far is that artemisinin may help create cancer-killing free radicals in the body. It works similarly to fight cancer to how it fights malaria, by reacting with iron-rich cancer cells to produce free radicals that go on the attack. Some research even indicates that artemisinin is much more specific in targeting and killing certain cancer cells than other cancer treatments, which means that normal cells can survive with this method. Artemisinin derivatives, such as dimers, trimers and hybrids, are currently being researched and used as a potential therapeutic alternative to current chemotherapies to combat cancers such as leukemia. Recent studies show that its derivatives possess both in-vitro and in-vivo activities against various types of cancer. Its anti-cancer effects come from its ability to initiate apoptotic cell death, inhibit cancer proliferation, reduce metastatic growth and promote the formulation of new blood vessels. Research published in 2021 notes that artemisinin has shown therapeutic activity against leukemia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma cells. Artemisinin drugs have also exhibited good tolerance and few side effects when used in combination with standard chemotherapies. The “synergism” of flavonoids and artemisinin in cancer treatment has also been reported. Flavonoids have been shown to enhance the anti-cancer effects of artemisinins by increasing their bioavailability and half life values. These benefits have been reported in several cancer cell models, including on pancreatic, breast, colon and prostate cancers. Other Benefits In addition to the plant extract’s potential benefits for cancer treatment, it’s been used for thousands of years for other health conditions, including the following: 1. Used to Treat Malaria Artemisinin has proven to exert antimalarial effects, which are due to its free radical scavenging properties. The herbal drug reacts with the high levels of iron in the parasite and produces free radicals, which destroys the cell walls of the malaria. It has even proven to be effective against highly drug-resistant strains of the disease. 2. Reduces Inflammation The use of artemisinin against inflammatory-driver respiratory disorders has been investigated, and reports show that they attenuate inflammation by regulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. There’s evidence highlighting artemisinin’s effects against inflammatory conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease and osteoarthritis. 3. Has Antimicrobial and Antiviral Effects The secondary metabolites in Artemisia annua, including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and phenolic compounds, exhibit antimicrobial effects. There’s also recent research suggesting that A. annua extracts inhibit viral infections and can serve as a cost-effective therapeutic for fighting viruses. Although more research is needed, there are reports indicating that artemisinin may have the following benefits as well: Reduces cholesterol Controls seizures Fights obesity Fights diabetes Risks and Side Effects Research suggests that artemisinin is generally well-tolerated, but some people may experience side effects, including: nausea vomiting skin rash vertigo ringing in the ears digestive complaints tremors liver damage It should not be combined with certain medications. People with gastrointestinal disorders or ulcers should not take artemisinin or use products derived from A. annua. It should not be taken with anti-seizure medications, either. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use sweet wormwood unless doing so under the care of a health care provider. Supplements and Dosage Artemisinin supplements are available in many forms and can be used orally, intravenously or rectally. The sweet wormwood plant is also used to make teas, juices and extracts, which is used traditionally to treat malaria and reduce inflammation. The People’s Republic of China lists the daily dose of Artemisia annua for fever and malaria as 4.5 to nine grams of dried herb prepared as an infusion. This is the preparation that’s been used for clinical trials. For readymade supplements, doses vary depending on what it’s being used for. A specific dosage for optimal efficacy has not yet been established, but taking 400–800 milligrams daily is often recommended for reducing inflammation, fighting fever and malaria, and combating infections. This dose range has shown to be safe for six to 12 months, with no apparent artemisinin side effects. Conclusion Artemisia annua is a plant that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years for the treatment of fever, inflammation and infections. Artemisinin, one of the main constituents in the plant, is used in combination therapies for the treatment of malaria, and recent research indicates that it’s a useful tool for cancer treatment as well. Artemisinin supplements can be taken orally, intravenously and rectally in a clinical setting, under the care of a doctor. They have to know it’s a ridiculous lie. Each passing day brings more evidence these endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a major threat. Synthetic chemicals like the bisphenol A (BPA) from plastics latch onto cellular receptors, increase estrogen production, reduce male fertility, and alter human metabolism. This sets the stage for massive chronic disease. You see, excess estrogen can destroy your health. It can even send you to an early grave. I’ve been blowing the whistle on endocrine disruptors for over two decades now, and at last the research community is beginning to wake up. Dr. Shanna H. Swan is a Mount Sinai medical center expert who initially accepted the EPA’s propaganda about EDCs… until her research validated a shocking global decline in human fertility. Now she’s crusading to alert the world to this massive threat. BPA Nosedive: Fertility and Health Fall Off a Cliff Together Among the stunning trends Dr. Swan documents: Plummeting masculinity: The sperm counts of men in the Western world dropped by over 59% from 1973 to 2011. She based her findings on 183 studies involving 42,935 men. Dr. Swan blames BPAs and other EDC toxins. Fading testosterone: The average male sex hormone level in men is dropping at about 1% a year. And there’s no sign the decline is leveling off. Crashing fertility: By 2045, Dr. Swan predicts that most couples who want to conceive will need artificial means such as IVF to have children… they simply won’t have enough reproductive capacity. Life-threatening consequences: One study showed women struggling with infertility had a 32% higher risk of dying.1 It’s even worse for men – those with abnormal sperm, or low sperm counts, had a 230% higher risk of dying.2 These are grim statistics… and I want to make sure that you don’t become one of them. Your Gameplan to Beat EDCs EDC Defense Protocol No. 1: Reduce Exposure – Start with the basics: Buy certified-organic fruits and veggies whenever possible. Use glass food containers not plastic, and never heat food in a plastic container unless you want a side helping of BPA with every meal. And do whatever you can to avoid fast food. It’s laced with EDCs… fast-food lovers have 40% higher BPA and phthalate blood levels.3 EDC Defense Protocol No. 2: Glutathione – Glutathione is a “seek and destroy” detoxifier that neutralizes environmental toxins and free radicals. Several studies indicate those who reach 100 are more likely to have higher levels of glutathione.4 More glutathione triggers better stem cell function.5 I recommend liposomal glutathione… it’s more absorbable. It can double immune-function biomarkers in a single week, including T cells and B cells.6 Start with a gram a day of liposomal glutathione… and gradually increase to 1 gram twice daily. EDC Defense Protocol No. 3: The Estrogen-Buster From Bali – Eugenol blocks estrogen imitators from locking onto cellular receptors, limiting the ability of EDCs to disrupt normal hormone levels. You’ll find clove oil and eugenol extract online and at your local supplement store. EDC Defense Protocol No. 4: Get Plenty of I3C and DIM – Indole-3 carbinol (I3C) is a special compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower. Your body converts I3C into diindolylmethane (DIM). The I3C/DIM combo converts estrogen into harmless compounds your body easily excretes.
