And the city authorities who hired them were on the take from the very same mob. Fortunes were made. It was a win-win situation. The only losers were New York taxpayers. I’m reminded of this story because Big Pharma is about to play the same game. But instead of manhole covers, they will be using cholesterol-busting statin drugs. Let me explain… Big Pharma has brainwashed much of the world into thinking that statins are all that stand between patients and heart attacks – and now they’re poised to cash in on the miserable side effects caused by these drugs. Drugs that you don’t need in the first place. I’ve been warning patients against these Big Pharma toxins for decades. Not only are they a waste of time when treating heart disease – in fact, they raise your risk of heart attacks – but they come with a long list of side effects. Some of the more dangerous side effects include high blood sugar, liver damage, memory loss, muscle pain, dystrophy, and rhabdomyolysis (when muscle cells burst).1 Now a team of researchers at Ben-Gurion University in Israel has declared that the muscle pain and dystrophy caused by statins is a “new” disease. And they’ve discovered that a new drug to treat a hereditary muscle disorder also works for the side effects of statins.2 The researchers have now filed a patent for the new drug, and it’s just a matter of time before Big Pharma comes calling. Talk about disease-mongering… I smell a rat – and I don’t mean a lab rat. If this new drug were a manhole cover and the researchers were contractors in trucks, they’d surely be suspected of mafia connections. Like most people in the developed world, there’s a high chance that a doctor has persuaded, scared, or even straight-up bullied you into taking a statin. You see, their multibillion-dollar global business is based on the decades-old lie that high fat and high cholesterol cause heart disease. It’s not true. You don’t need statins at all. I know that may sound jarring, but cholesterol doesn’t cause heart disease. Multiple studies prove it – including the landmark Framington Heart Study, which found no link between high cholesterol and raised heart disease risk.3 Only Big Pharma and their shareholders need statins. 3 Powerful Heart Nutrients That Replace Statins The good news is that for every statin, there are safe, proven, and inexpensive natural alternatives your cardiologist will never tell you about. Nutrient # 1 – Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): This omega-3 fatty acid eliminates the need for statins and has been proven to raise HDL. It’s a potent defender against heart disease. One study discovered that if you take just 1.5 grams of DHA per day for a few weeks, your HDL can shoot up by 7%. No Big Pharma drug can do that.4 I recommend supplementing with at least 600 mg of DHA and 60 mg of the EPA form of omega-3 in a combination of squid and krill oil. Nutrient # 2 – CoQ10: This nutrient provides fuel for your mitochondria — the tiny power plants inside each of your cells – in your heart. Statin drugs are the biggest killer of CoQ10 levels. Supplementing with CoQ10 can bring immediate, often-lifesaving benefits. Studies show that taking CoQ10 daily reduces arrhythmias, improves your heart’s pumping ability, and reduces your risk of death from heart attacks. CoQ10 also lowers blood pressure and your atherosclerosis risk.5,6 If you’re taking statins, your levels are likely to be dangerously low, so I recommend a supplement of at least 100 mg a day. And look for the ubiquinol form of CoQ10. It’s eight times more powerful than the more common ubiquinone form. Nutrient # 3 – PQQ: While CoQ10 does a great job of squeezing more power from your mitochondria, it does nothing for the mitochondria you’ve lost. That’s where the little-known nutrient pyrroloquinoline quinone, or PQQ, comes in. PQQ triggers your heart cells to build healthy new mitochondria, which produce more fuel so your heart pumps with more energy.It’s hard to get enough PQQ from natural sources. And they are very attractive: the convenience of microwave meals, the good taste of chips, the cheapness of a snack to take to school. A research by the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention at the I.R.C.C.S. Neuromed, in Italy, now confirms that these foods are harmful to health. Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study was conducted on over twenty-two thousand citizens participating in the Moli-sani Project. By analyzing their eating habits and following their health conditions for over 8 years, Neuromed researchers were able to observe that those consuming a high amount of ultra-processed foods had an increased risk of death from any cause of 26%, and of 58% specifically from cardiovascular diseases. &#8220;To evaluate the nutrition habits of the Moli-sani participants &#8211; explains Marialaura Bonaccio, researcher at the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention and first author of the study &#8211; we used the international NOVA classification, which characterizes foods on the basis of how much they undergo extraction, purification or alteration. Those with the highest level of industrial processing fall into the category of ultra-processed foods. According to our observations, people consuming large amounts of these foods have an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases&#8221;. The main culprit could be sugar, which in ultra-processed foods is added in substantial amounts . But the answer seems more complex. &#8220;According to our analyses &#8211; explains Augusto Di Castelnuovo, epidemiologist of the Department, currently at Mediterranea Cardiocentro in Naples &#8211; the excess of sugar does play a role, but it accounts only for 40% of the increased death risk. Our idea is that an important part is played by industrial processing itself, able to induce deep modifications in the structure and composition of nutrients&#8221;. &#8220;Efforts aimed to lead the population towards a healthier diet &#8211; comments Licia Iacoviello, Director of the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of Neuromed and full professor of Hygiene and Public Health at the University of Insubria in Varese &#8211; can no longer be addressed only by calories counting or by vague references to the Mediterranean diet. With the rapid spread of its causative agent, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), it is crucial to determine ways to prevent infection. The immune system protects the host from pathogenic organisms, including viruses, bacterial, fungi, and parasites. To deal with a broad range of threats, the immune system has evolved to include many specialized cell types that communicate and work in tandem to fight off infections. Since the immune system is active in carrying out surveillance throughout the day, it needs adequate nutrients. Several vitamins and trace elements have been shown to reduce the risk of infections. A researcher at the School of Human Development and Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, explored nutrition&#8217;s role in boosting the immune system to combat COVID-19 infection. The study published in the BMJ Nutrition, Prevention &#38; Health highlights the importance of nutrition in boosting the immune system&#8217;s ability to fight off infection. The Immune System The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. It keeps a record of every pathogen it has ever encountered to recognize and kill it if it enters the body again. Immunological memory refers to the immune system&#8217;s ability to quickly recognize an antigen that the body has previously encountered and initiated a corresponding immune response. Many factors could alter the body&#8217;s immune response. Aging can be tied to a loss of immune system competence, called immunosenescence. Immunosenescence is characterized by reduced immune cells, including T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, dendritic cells, neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, and natural killer cells. One factor associated with immunosenescence is a reduction of immune cells from the bone marrow, where these cells come from. All these processes that occur in old age could predispose older people to more severe COVID-19. Obesity is also tied to a reduced immune response. Usually, obese people experience impairments in the activity of helper T lymphocytes, cytotoxic T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and natural killer cells. They also have reduced antibody and interferon-gamma (IFN-y) production. This predisposes them to develop severe COVID-19. Also, obese people may have a poorer response to vaccination. Obesity has also been linked to increased blood concentrations of many inflammatory mediators, a state of chronic low-grade inflammation. When infected, the immune system may mount an excessive inflammatory response like a cytokine storm, making them vulnerable to severe COVID-19. Nutrition and Immunity The immune system functions at all times, but specific cells become activated by the presence of pathogens. The activation leads to a marked increase in the immune system&#8217;s demand for energy-yielding substrates, including fatty acids, glucose, and amino acids. Some nutrients, such as vitamin A and D, are direct regulators of the gene expression in immune cells. They play essential roles in the maturation, differentiation, and responsiveness of immune cells. Antioxidants also play critical roles in protecting the body against oxidative stress. Classic antioxidant vitamins include vitamin C and E, including antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase. Hence, keeping the body well-nourished is crucial to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Good nutrition provides an environment where the immune system can respond quickly and appropriately to infection. Meanwhile, nutrient deficiency makes the body and the immune system unable to work correctly. In a nutshell, keeping the body nourished with vitamins and minerals is essential in the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In some cases, even if a person gets infected, the body&#8217;s immune system can readily fight off the pathogen, reducing the risk of developing severe illness. Vitamin A, B6, folate, C, D, and E, including trace elements like zinc, copper, iron, and selenium, have been demonstrated to play key roles in supporting the immune system and reducing the risk of infections. &#8220;It would seem prudent for individuals to consume sufficient amounts of essential nutrients to support their immune system to help them to deal with pathogens should they become infected,&#8221; the researchers explained. &#8220;Consumption of a diet of diverse and varied plant-based and animal-based foods that are consistent with current healthy eating guidelines would be best to support the immune system,&#8221; they encouraged.
