While you may think the type of large trampolines you seen in backyards may be a bit much, there are small versions that can fit right in your living room and are easy to store. So get ready to jump around and improve your health all at the same time. Read on to learn how to do a trampoline workout and how exactly it strengthens the body. What Is Rebounding? Trampoline and tumbling exercises have been around for a very long time and can be traced to archeological drawings found in ancient China, Egypt and Persia. The firs modern trampolines were developed in 1934 by George Nissen and Larry Griswold at the University of Iowa, according to the official website of the Olympics. Trampolines were originally used to train astronauts and as a training tool for other sports, such as acrobatics, tumbling, diving, gymnastics and freestyle skiing. Eventually, trampolines became so popular to the point of becoming a sport in the Olympic Games. The first Trampoline World Championships took place in 1964, and trampoline was first recognized as a sport in the U.S. in 1967. The double mini-trampoline competition was added in 1978 and began as two individual mini trampolines, separated by a small table covered by a mat. Later, a one-piece unit was developed by Bob Bollinger and is used today as the official equipment for that event. Trampolines have become useful in the understanding of gravity and its effects on exercise. The Journal of Applied Physiology recorded a study by NASA in 1980 on rebounding by testing eight young males ages 19–26. The goal was to understand body acceleration distribution and its relation to how it was created. Here’s what the researchers concluded: The results indicate that, for similar levels of HR and VO2, the magnitude of the biomechanical stimuli is greater with jumping on a trampoline than with running, a finding that might help identify acceleration parameters needed for the design of remedial procedures to avert deconditioning in persons exposed to weightlessness. Trampoline Workout Benefits We all know there are many benefits of exercise, but what are the benefits of rebounding, specifically? Let’s explore. 1. Easy on the Joints Working out on the trampoline, or rebounding, has way less impact on the joints, soft tissue and skeleton. Due to how a trampoline is made, most often using either springs or bungee bands, it absorbs much of the impact at every bounce. G-force The NASA study previously mentioned notes that there seems to be more balance of pressure or force, known as G-force, when on the trampoline. Pressure is more evenly distributed at the ankle, back and forehead when rebounding, whereas when running, the pressure is mostly all placed on the ankles, often causing more frequent injury. That means simply switching to a trampoline workout routine can help naturally reduce joint pain and help you avoid common running injuries. 2. Strengthens Cells and Improves Cardiovascular Development A trampoline workout can provide impressive aerobic exercise benefits by strengthening the heart. When tested, the work required to perform trampoline exercise at equivalent levels of effort was significantly greater while on the trampoline than while running. Increase oxygen uptake When oxygen reaches our cells, it helps strengthen them and provide the ability to endure more exercise efficiently, and because the body is able to increase oxygen uptake when rebounding, versus some other physical activities, it’s possible to get a much better workout. Rebounding can increase oxygen uptake because more oxygen can reach the cells due to the gravity changes that occur when bouncing. In some studies, when testing on the treadmill, the ability to uptake more oxygen was greater when on the trampoline. This could allow participants to perform exercise for longer periods of time. Effects of daily short bouts of trampoline exercise A study regarding the effects of daily short bouts of trampoline exercise during eight weeks on the pulmonary function and the maximal oxygen uptake of children with cystic fibrosis was reported by the International Journal of Sports Medicine. Six girls and two boys with cystic fibrosis, 10–13.5 years of age, participated in a prescribed exercise program on a mini trampoline. The training consisted of three short rounds of trampoline exercise. The study showed that their maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) improved during the exercise period. In addition, trampoline exercise programs are suggested as other types of training to add in order to avoid monotony in the training for many patients. 3. Can Improve Immune System Function Due to Lymph Flow Rebounding can lead to increased lymph fluid circulation, which helps boost the immune system by providing a greater white blood cell activity. The lymphatic system is part of your circulatory system and transports a clear, colorless fluid, called lymph, that flushes toxins from your body. It’s believed that there is an increase in the circulation of this fluid when the lymphatic valves are opened during a change in gravitational pull. This particular change occurs upon the moment you land on the trampoline, thanks to gravity. Then, upon leaving the surface, the lymphatic valves are opened. The increased G-force g that occurs when you land causes a surge of lymphatic drainage, which improves circulation and, therefore, may help detoxify your entire system. 4. Helps with Balance Another study reported by the U.S. National Library of Medicine cited the effects of different types of exercise on postural balance in elderly women. These exercises can help prevent functional limitations due to aging, therefore reducing the risk of falls. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three different exercises: mini trampoline, aquatic gymnastics and general floor gymnastics. Seventy-four physically independent elderly women were randomly assigned to three intervention groups. Each group performed physical training, including cardiorespiratory, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and sensory-motor exercises, for 12 weeks. To determine the effects on each intervention group, postural balance tasks were performed. The study concluded that there were significant improvements in the postural balance of elderly women after 12 weeks of training and ultimately provides further evidence that exercise, like a trampoline workout, that includes balance postures can promote health in elderly women. 5. Builds Physical Strength, Muscular Development and Proprioception for Athletes Rebounding is often said to improve physical strength and muscular development as well as proprioception, which is the ability to sense the position, location, orientation and movement of the body and its parts. A study published in the International Journal of Preventative Medicine randomly divided 20 patients with Parkinson’s disease “into two equal groups of weight-bearing exercises and rebound exercise with no significant differences in age, weight, and height.” They compared results on range of motion, proprioception and quality of life after eight weeks. The researchers found that both groups saw significant improvements in all three areas, but the improvement rate was greater across the board in the rebounding therapy group. How to Choose a Good Rebounder Because many injuries can occur while on a trampoline, it’s critical that you don’t go the cheaper route because cheaper trampolines tend to break or malfunction, causing injury. They also can lack the support needed to be effective. It’s important that your rebounder has at least 32 springs that taper at the end. This provides the proper flexibility and a more even bounce. Steel construction lasts longer, too. Some models offer support bars, which may be useful, especially for beginners or the elderly. How to Start Using Your Rebounder Rebounders, or mini trampolines, can be used almost anywhere indoors or outdoors. Remember to start slow with small jumps, and make sure you get used to the equipment before you increase to bigger jumps. A trampoline workout is one idea for burst training at home. You can include some traditional exercise, such as jumping jacks, to get you started. Rebounding is a great low-impact exercise that’s fun and different. In just 15–20 minutes a day, you can burn calories, gain muscle strength and enhance your balance while improving your immune system — and helping turn on the afterburn effect. Trampoline or Rebounding Workout Time: 20–45 minutes, depending on number of sets performed Warmup: Basic Trampoline Bounce The basic bounce can tone your quads, glutes and calf muscles. Stand on the mini trampoline with your feet shoulder-width apart. Relax your arms and shoulders but with a slight bend at the elbow. Lightly bounce up and down while keeping a slight bend in the knees. Your feet should come just a few inches off the trampoline. Repeat 20–30 times. Rest for 15 seconds, and repeat two more times for a total of three rounds. Main Set: Jumping Jacks A classic, this gets your heart rate up while engaging the inner and outer thighs. Standing with feet together, jump out while extending arms out, up and overhead. Then return to the starting position, and repeat. Perform 30–45 jumping jacks. Planks This plank exercise variation works your entire core. Start in plank position with your forearms in the middle of the trampoline and your feet on the floor (unless your trampoline is large enough for your entire body). Hold the plank position for 20–30 seconds. Release for 10 seconds, and repeat three to four times. High Knees This is a great exercise hack that gets your heart rate moving while working your core muscles. Stand with feet hip distance apart. Raise your right knee, return to start, then raise your left knee. Once you feel comfortable, begin doing it as if you are running in place. Repeat 20 times (one on each side counts as one full rep). Planks to Pushups Advanced Move This exercise works your entire core and provides some upper-body strength in the arms and chest. Keeping abs fully engaged, start in plank position with your forearms in the middle of the trampoline and your feet on the floor (unless your trampoline is large enough for your entire body). Transition to your hands one arm at a time, then do a pushup and return to your forearms for another plank. Make sure that your abs are engaged the entire time. Do this exercise for six to 10 reps. Trampoline Squats Wondering how to strengthen your core? Well, this exercise requires you to engage your core muscles. It strengthens glutes and quads as well as your core if properly engaged. Stand on the mini trampoline with your feet shoulder-width apart and arms at your sides. Jump up, and land in a squat position with your knees bent, butt back and thighs parallel to the ground, like sitting down in a chair. It may be helpful to place your arms straight out in front of you for balance. Return to the starting position, and repeat 15–20 times. At first, you may want to take it slow. Once you have mastered the exercise, you can begin to do it a bit faster with continuous movement similar to a jump squat that you would do on the ground. When cooked, it becomes crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside — and it offers a delicious salty taste, too. It’s versatile enough to add to many recipes you’re already preparing at home. But how healthy is it? How does it match up against other cheeses, including protein and calcium content? Let’s dig in. What is halloumi cheese? Halloumi cheese is a semi-hard, unripened and brined cheese that’s traditionally made from sheep’s milk in the Greek island of Cyprus. In the U.S. (and at Trader Joe’s), grilling halloumi cheese is also made from cow and goat milk. Halloumi is free from rennet, an enzyme that’s commonly used in cheesemaking. Because rennet is often derived from the stomach of calf, lamb and goat, people on a vegetarian diet typically won’t eat cheeses made with the enzyme. Halloumi has a unique taste and texture. It’s firm and salty and has been compared to a thick feta, although halloumi has a smoother texture. It’s when the cheese is grilled, pan-fried or baked that it’s true delicious flavor emerges. It becomes a savory treat that’s crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The texture and taste of this grilling cheese are what make it so versatile and explain its growing popularity. It can be added to salads, wraps, tacos, burgers and more. Nutrition facts One slice (roughly 25 grams) of halloumi nutrition contains about: Calories: 74 Total Fat: 6 g Saturated Fat: 4 g Protein: 5 g Sodium: 300 mg (8%–13% DV*) Calcium: 180 mg (18% DV) *Daily Value: Percentages are based on a diet of 2,000 calories a day. Potential benefits 1. High in protein Just one thin slice, or 25 grams, of halloumi cheese contains five grams of protein. Consuming enough high-protein foods regularly is important for many body functions, including providing energy, helping build muscle, supporting the absorption of nutrients and stabilizing blood sugar levels. Research published in Nutrients suggests that individuals may benefit from increasing their intake and frequency of consumption of protein. Halloumi wouldn’t necessarily be considered the highest quality protein because of its salt and saturated fat content, but consuming it in moderation can be beneficial. 2. Good source of calcium Halloumi cheese also serves as a good source of calcium. According to researchers in Greece, the calcium content in the grilling cheese depends on the brining process, but 80 percent of the calcium found in the cheese comes from the casein molecules. We know that calcium is a key nutrient in our bodies and maintaining adequate levels is important. Consuming high-calcium foods like halloumi can help support heart and bone health. 3. Doesn’t contain lactose Lactose intolerance is a spectrum, as some people who deal with this allergy may be able to eat many cheeses while others can suffer stomach issues after just one bite of ice cream. Halloumi is made from sheep and goat milk, both of which contain less lactose than milk and generally cause fewer allergy issues. 4. Vegetarian-friendly (but check first) Many halloumi products aren’t made with rennet, so they are considered vegetarian. That said, you’ll want to double-check the product label to ensure that it’s not made with animal-derived rennet. Research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests that the typical vegetarian diet tends to be high in carbohydrates and low in protein. Adding halloumi to some meals throughout the month can be helpful in maintaining proper nutrient levels. Potential downsides Halloumi is a salty cheese, with up to 13 percent of your daily value in just one slice. Therefore, when eaten in excess, it’s easy to go overboard on your daily sodium intake. This frying cheese is also high in saturated fat, with one slice accounting for a good portion of your daily value. While saturated fat remains vilified, research recently has shown that saturated fat may not cause the health problems it was long suspected of. In fact, a 2022 study declared that “saturated fats have no effect on cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular mortality or total mortality.” The fat that undoubtedly does cause health issues is trans fat, and halloumi cheese doesn’t contain any of this fat. Regardless, because of its sodium level and being somewhat high in calories like all cheeses, moderation is recommended. How to use You’ll be able to find halloumi cheese in many specialty grocers, including places like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Natural food stores commonly carry grilling cheese, and cheese shops will likely carry halloumi as well. Although halloumi is traditionally made in Greece, there are other versions of grilling or frying cheese that are prepared by dairy and goat farmers in the United States and Canada. Like most other cheeses, halloumi can be enjoyed by itself or added to a range of recipes to add texture and flavor. It’s very easy to cook halloumi, as it can be pan-fried, grilled and baked. Halloumi has a high fat content, so it doesn’t require adding oil when cooking. Here are some simple ideas for cooking this grilling cheese: Pan fry: Cut the cheese into slices that are about a half-inch thick. Some products already come precut and packaged. Cook each side in a nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Let each side dry-fry for about 1–2 minutes, until it becomes brown and crispy. Bake: Add half-inch slices to an ovenproof dish or baking sheet, and drizzle them with olive oil. Bake at 390 degrees Fahrenheit for 10–15 minutes until the cheese begins to brown on edges. Grill: Coat half-inch cheese slices with olive oil, and grill over high heat. You’ll want to turn the cheese slices occasionally and grill for about 2–5 minutes, until it begins to crisp. You can also cut the cheese into cubes and grill it on skewers. Now that you’ve learned how to cook halloumi cheese, you’ll probably need some ideas about how to use it in your everyday recipes. Castor oil is a non-volatile fatty oil that is derived from the seeds of the castor bean (Ricinus communis) plant, aka castor seeds. The castor oil plant belongs to the flowering spurge family called Euphorbiaceae and is mainly cultivated in Africa, South America and India (India accounts for over 90% of castor oil exports globally). It’s very thick with a color that ranges from clear to amber or somewhat green. It’s both used topically on the skin and taken by mouth (it has a mild scent and taste). Studies suggest that many of castor oil’s benefits come down to its chemical composition. It’s classified as a type of triglyceride fatty acid, and almost 90 percent of its fatty acid content is a specific and rare compound called ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is not found in many other plants or substances, making the castor plant unique since it’s a concentrated source. Aside from its primary constituent, ricinoleic acid, castor oil also contains other beneficial salts and esters that mainly act as skin-conditioning agents. Compounds found in castor can help stabilize the texture and consistency of products, which is why castor oil is used in so many cosmetics, hair and skincare treatments. Indeed, research studies have found that castor oil contains therapeutic components including fatty acids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, amino acids, terpenoids and phytosterols. These various compounds give the oil the following properties and potential health benefits: Anti-diabetic Anti-inflammatory Antimicrobial Antioxidant Hepatoprotective (ability to prevent damage to the liver) Free radical scavenging Wound-healing Types Castor oil can be used in several ways: orally (taken by mouth), applied topically on the skin, applied to the hair, or massaged into the skin in the form of a castor oil pack. Where can you buy castor oil products? Ideally look for a reputable brand of cold-pressed, pure, organic castor oil at your local health food store, or online if you can’t find it in stores. Here are some of the most common types of castor oils you may find in stores: Cold-pressed castor oil — This type is produced by cold-pressing the castor bean seeds to extract their natural oil content. This results in a high quality product that is recommended for internal use. You may also want to check that the oil is pesticide-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free and free of artificial color or fragrances. Acts as a laxative and relieve constipation Studies indicate that castor oil works like a natural, mild stimulant laxative when taken orally. It can provide constipation relief, reduce straining during defecation and enhance the feeling of complete evacuation after a bowel movement. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved castor oil for use as a laxative. Its active ingredient, ricinoleic acid, gets released into the intestine, where it helps with the process of digestion, nutrient absorption and cleansing the system. It increases movement of the muscles that push material through the intestines, helping to pass a bowel movement. One study looked at the effects of castor oil packs on elderly people experiencing constipation. The study participants were monitored for a week before, three days during and four days after the oil pack administration. Eighty percent of the individuals studied had been experiencing constipation for 10 years or longer. The researchers found that the oil packs were able to decrease constipation symptoms, most specifically straining during defecation. Consult your healthcare professional before using long-term, as castor oil may lead to complications. Also be aware that side effects of ingesting castor oil may include diarrhea and abdominal cramping. 2. Moisturizes skin Castor oil is completely natural and free of synthetic chemicals (as long as you use pure 100 percent pure oil, of course), yet it’s rich in skin-boosting ingredients like fatty acids. In particular, its main monounsaturated fatty acid is ricinoleic acid, which possesses moisturizing properties. Applying this oil to dry or irritated skin can help to discourage dryness and keep it well moisturized, since it prevents water loss. It can also be combined with select carrier oils to avoid any potential allergic reactions. Regardless, it’s a good idea to do a small skin patch test first. 3. May boost wound healing Studies indicate that castor oil can boost wound and pressure ulcer healing thanks to its moisturizing as well as antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. In particular, its main component ricinoleic acid appears to help lower skin inflammation and support skin healing. It mixes well with other ingredients like almond, olive and coconut oil, all of which have unique benefits for skin. Lab studies have shown that castor oil is effective against many types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. According to studies, the reason castor oil can work to induce labor is due to the fact that the ricinoleic acid in the oil can activate EP3 prostanoid receptors in the uterus. A 2018 observational case control study found that castor oil use produced a higher probability of labor within 24 hours after ingesting. It noted, “Castor oil can be considered a safe non-pharmacological method for labor induction.” In addition, the full-term women study subjects (between 40 and 41 weeks) who took castor oil had a lower incidence of Caesarean section. Regardless, the overall consensus is that castor oil needs to be researched further to prove that it is safe for pregnant mothers ready to give birth. In addition, it may cause nausea among these mothers, which is another reason why most hospitals do not approve its use. Of course, consult with your healthcare professional before considering to use castor oil before giving birth. 5. May lower symptoms of arthritis and joint pain Castor oil is often used as a natural treatment for arthritis pain, joint swelling and inflammation. Subjects were either given a castor oil capsule (0.9 milliliters) three times daily for four weeks or a capsule of diclofenac sodium (50 milligrams) for the same amount of time. Overall, they found that castor oil worked as well as conventional treatment and can be used as “an effective therapy in primary knee osteoarthritis.” Risks and side effects Reports show that this oil can be safely taken internally. When swallowed, it’s hydrolyzed in the small intestine by pancreatic enzymes, leading to the release of glycerol and ricinoleic acid, along with other beneficial metabolites. Castor oil is classified by the Food and Drug Administration as generally recognized as safe for both topical and internal use. However, drinking castor oil may still potentially cause side effects. Side effects can include abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, especially when used in large amounts. Some people experience nausea and signs of mild irritation in their gut lining when taking castor oil. That said, it’s very unlikely to cause severe reactions as long as someone is not allergic and doesn’t overdose. If you’re pregnant, you should not take castor oil to induce labor without speaking to your healthcare professional first. You should also avoid using it to relieve constipation during pregnancy. Allergic reactions to castor oil (used topically or internally) are possible, so seek emergency medical care if you believe you are having a serious allergic reaction. When using castor oil topically, it’s still best to start slowly and perform a skin patch test on a small area of your skin before applying larger amounts, and also keep it away from your eyes, inside of your nose, children and pets. Before McDonald’s started using hydrogenated vegetable oils to fry its fries, the company used good, old-fashioned beef tallow. Many other fast food restaurants did, too, including Burger King, Wendy’s, Hardee’s, Arby’s, Dairy Queen, Popeyes and Bob’s Big Boy. For centuries, tallow (or beef fat) was considered a healthy and delicious fat for frying, baking and more. It was only once cheap, highly processed vegetable oils became widely available in the U.S. and elsewhere that tallow and similar animal fats (like schmaltz and lard) went out of fashion. Can you still eat tallow? Yes, and in moderation, some it can be a healthy fat to cook with, especially compared to margarine or processed shortening. Grass-fed beef fat can be a great source of oleic acid, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and other fatty acids that are thought to be good for increasing “good” cholesterol levels and supporting cognitive/brain health and a strong metabolism. What is tallow? Tallow is fat rendered from beef (or less often mutton), which is why it’s sometimes called beef lard. Like many other saturated fats, it’s solid at room temperature but melts into a liquid when heated. Tallow’s appearance and texture are described as being similar to butter’s, since it’s solid and a beige/white color when cooled. However, it has a drier, waxy texture and somewhat different taste than butter. Types Although most people refer to only beef fat as tallow, technically other animal fats can also be called by the same name. Some commercial types of tallow contain fat derived from multiple animals, including mutton, pigs and hogs. Most often tallow is made by rendering suet, which is a hard, white type of fat found in the tissues surrounding animals’ organs. Many consider the best quality beef tallow to be rendered from the fat around the kidneys, although it can also be made from rendering other fat. This fatty tissue around the kidneys stores many nutrients, especially when the cattle is grass-fed. Tallow can also sometimes be referred to as shortening, which is defined as any fat that is solid at room temperature and used in baking. Nutrition facts Tallow is a mostly saturated animal fat, although it contains some unsaturated fats too. The breakdown of fats in tallow is estimated to be 45 percent to 55 percent saturated fat, 40 percent to 50 percent monounsaturated fat and 3 percent to 7 percent polyunsaturated fat. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one tablespoon of tallow has about: Calories: 115 Total Fat: 12.8 g Saturated Fat: 6.4 g Polyunsaturated Fat: 0.5 g Monounsaturated Fat: 5.4 g 0 grams of carbs, protein, sugar or fiber In terms of nutrient content, the highest-quality beef tallow comes from grass-fed cattle, as opposed to those conventionally raised on feedlots and fed grains. Grass-fed cattle tend to store more omega-3s, CLA and other beneficial compounds in their bodies compared to cows that are fed less healthy diets. Tallow rendered from grass-fed cattle provides some of the following nutrients: Vitamins A, D, K, E and B12 Choline CLA Other fatty acids, including oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid and others Health benefits What are the benefits of tallow? Here are some of the reasons this fat has been used in cooking, baking and more for centuries. 1. Provides healthy fats, including cholesterol In the 1950s, researchers first began advocating for a lower-fat diet since animal fats were being linked to development of coronary heart disease. However, since this time we’ve come to understand that foods high in fat and cholesterol actually provide certain health benefits. As mentioned above, tallow provides both saturated and monounsaturated fats. It’s made up of about 40 percent to 50 percent monounsaturated fats, which are considered one of the most heart-healthy fats in our diets. This is the same type of fat found in olive oil. The type of saturated fat found in tallow is believed to have a mostly neutral effect on blood cholesterol levels, or the ability to raise “good” HDL cholesterol, meaning that consuming it in moderate amounts shouldn’t increase your risk for cardiovascular disease. Consuming saturated fat as part of a healthy diet has also been shown in some cases to have an inverse relationship with obesity-related type 2 diabetes. 2. May help support weight loss/management Tallow is rich in CLA, a fatty acid that studies have suggested can support a healthy metabolism and may lead to fat burning. Consuming animal fats can be especially helpful for weight loss if you follow a high-fat keto diet, which leads to ketosis to enhance fat-burning. 3. Can help you absorb essential vitamins You need fats in your diet to absorb fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E and K. These essential vitamins help support your immune system, skeletal system, heart, skin and more. 4. Has a high smoke point Compared to other cooking fats and oils, including olive oil and butter, tallow has a higher smoke point around 420 to 480 degrees Fahrenheit. Smoke point refers to the temperature at which an oil starts to burn, smoke and lose many of its nutritional benefits. Tallow can be used at high temperatures without causing its chemical composition to change. When cooking at high heat, such as roasting, frying and baking, use it over oils like canola, corn and even virgin olive oil, which are prone to oxidizing at high temperatures and can contribute to problems such as formation of free radicals. 5. Can help hydrate skin Why is tallow good for your skin? It’s rich in fatty acids that help form the lipids that keep skin protected and moisturized. These include palmitoleic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid (the same type of fat found in olive oil). Consuming fats can help support the skin, while some fats, including tallow, can also be applied topically to your skin. Some benefits of tallow for skin health include: Improving moisture and treating dryness Helping increase skin’s flexibility and ability to heal Supporting the protective barrier function of skin 6. Provides a stable energy source Tallow, rich in saturated fats, is metabolized slowly, providing a steady energy source. Saturated fats provide a slow-burning energy source beneficial for sustained mental and physical performance. Fats from animal sources have been shown to sustain energy levels without causing rapid blood sugar spikes, supporting physical and mental performance. 7. May aid hormone regulation The fatty acids in tallow are essential for hormone production. Saturated fats, like those in tallow, are precursors to steroid hormones such as cortisol and testosterone, which are vital for stress response, reproductive health and overall homeostasis. 8. Supports the immune system Tallow contains fat-soluble vitamins, including A, E and D, which are known to enhance immune function. These vitamins play a critical role in regulating immune responses and maintaining skin integrity, the first line of defense against pathogens. 9. Holds anti-inflammatory properties CLA found in animal fats like tallow has been documented to reduce systemic inflammation. However, it’s important to note that this study did not specifically examine tallow. While some components of tallow may have potential benefits for heart health, the scientific evidence is not conclusive. The balanced composition of fats in tallow and its potential effects on cholesterol levels warrant further investigation. However, it’s important to note that individual responses to dietary fats can vary, and overall diet quality and lifestyle factors play crucial roles in heart health. As with any dietary change, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before significantly altering fat intake. How to use In terms of cooking, what is tallow good for? Because it has a high smoke point, it’s a good fat for frying, baking, sauteing and roasting. It can help give crusts, pastries, fried foods and baked goods a crumbly texture. Some popular uses for tallow include making: Donuts Fritters Pie crusts Flour tortillas Mexican recipes, like fried plantains and tamales Cookies Pound cake Biscuits Fried pork, chicken and other fried meats Lardo Fried vegetables, latkes and veggie fritters Where to buy tallow Look for organic tallow sourced from grass-fed cows at a local farmers market or health food store. You may also be able to find it at your local butcher shop. How to make tallow Purchase some grass-fed beef fat, such as from a butcher shop or farmers market. You may need to buy a big chunk before grinding or cutting it up and rendering it into liquid fat. Grind the fat, or cut it up into very small pieces (or ask the butcher to do this for you). Put the fat into a slow cooker on low or medium for several hours. You will hear crackling noises while it cooks. Once the noise stops and there are only liquid tallow and some crispy bits (called greaves or cracklings), it’s done. Try to turn the heat off as soon as the noise stops. Let it cool off for an hour, then strain it through a mesh strainer and store in a glass mason jar. If you keep it in an airtight container it doesn’t need to be refrigerated short term, however some people choose to refrigerate it if keeping it for a while. Tallow soap Traditionally, many soap bars were made with tallow, since it helps harden and lather soap while also supporting skin’s natural barrier. If you’re familiar with making soap at home using vegetable oils, you can try using tallow instead. To make homemade tallow soap, combine it with sodium hydroxide, water, jojoba or almond oil, along with essential oils, such as lavender, to improve the smell and soothing quality. Alternatives What can you use instead of tallow (besides lard)? Grass-fed butter is a good alternative and can be used in similar ways as tallow, since they contain mostly the same types of fats. Both are between 40 percent to 60 percent saturated fat. Some people may prefer the taste of butter, especially in baked goods. However, one advantage of tallow is that it’s dairy-free and tolerated by those with lactose intolerance/dairy allergies. This condition, known as nomophobia, has become increasingly common. What exactly is nomophobia, and how can you recognize and address it? Does the “ding” of your phone have you dropping whatever you’re doing to see who “liked” your latest Facebook status? Are you answering work emails before rubbing the sleep from your eyes? Does a low battery icon leave you quivering in fear? You, my friend, are likely suffering from nomophobia. Thankfully, there are ways to treat this condition to help address your smartphone addiction. What Is Nomophobia? Nomophobia, short for “no-mobile-phone phobia,” is the fear of being without a mobile phone or being unable to use it. The term originated from a 2008 study commissioned by the U.K. Post Office to examine the anxieties mobile phone users experience. The study found that nearly 53 percent of mobile phone users in the U.K. tend to feel anxious when they “lose their mobile phone, run out of battery or credit, or have no network coverage.” More simply put, nomophobia is having a smartphone addiction, and it’s a “first world problem” that’s showing no signs of slowing down, regardless of age. While it might sound silly — can you really be addicted to a handheld device? — the implications are real. About half of U.S. adults are checking their phones at least several times an hour, with 11 percent tapping their screens awake every few minutes. No space is safe from the rush of a new tweet, either. Almost one in 10 Americans has admitted to using her phone during sex, and among young adults ages 18 to 34, the number is even higher: One in five has engaged with his smartphone when being intimate. Is it a surprise, then, that 12 percent think that smartphones are detrimental to relationships? When you combine nomophobia with cars, things get even scarier. Among American adult drivers, more than 27 percent have sent or read texts while driving. Among young adults, that number shoots up to 34 percent. What’s the harm in interacting with your phone at a red light or when traffic is heavy? Consider the fact that text messaging while driving makes a crash 23 times more likely. Yikes. Symptoms While there is no set criteria to diagnose this condition, experts believe nomophobia is a smartphone addiction and/or dependence. Recognizing the signs of nomophobia is the first step toward addressing it. Common symptoms include: Panic or anxiety when separated from your phone Checking your phone repeatedly without receiving notifications Doomscrolling Avoiding places or situations where phone use is restricted Feeling uneasy when your phone is out of sight Excessive time spent on your phone, impacting daily life Respiratory alterations Trembling Perspiration Agitation Disorientation Tachycardia Inability to turn off your smartphone Taking the phone everywhere Fear of being without phone access (no internet connection or cell signal) Fear of not being able to use phone in case of emergency Stressing about neglecting your online persona Socially isolating and skipping activities to spend more time on your smartphone Increased heart rate According to research, some signs that someone may have nomophobia can include the fear of: Feeling disconnected Not have immediate access to information Giving up the convenience of your mobile device Not being able to contact and communicate with others Causes Several factors contribute to the development of nomophobia: Social connectivity: Fear of missing out (FOMO) on social interactions and updates. Dependence on technology: Increasing reliance on smartphones for various daily tasks. Instant gratification: The immediate access to information and entertainment that phones provide. Psychological factors: Underlying anxiety disorders or personality traits. Other possible causes that research has unearthed include: obsessive thoughts and compulsive smartphone behaviors extremely large number of hours using a smartphone each day social discomfort and feelings of inferiority Damage Nomophobia Does Even for those of us who don’t text and drive, nomophobia has serious consequences. It can have several adverse effects on an individual’s well-being, such as: Mental health: Increased anxiety, depression, stress and feelings of loneliness. Physical health: Poor posture, eye strain and sleep disturbances due to excessive phone use. Social interactions: Reduced face-to-face communication and weakened relationships. Productivity: Decreased focus and productivity at work or school due to constant phone checking. Furthermore, research on nomophobia in adolescents and young adults published in 2021 in Frontier in Psychiatry concluded that “excessive smartphone use is associated with psychiatric, cognitive, emotional, medical and brain changes that should be considered by health and education professionals.” The authors revealed that “excessive smartphone use is associated with difficulties in cognitive-emotion regulation, impulsivity, impaired cognitive function, addiction to social networking, shyness and low self-esteem. Medical problems include sleep problems, reduced physical fitness, unhealthy eating habits, pain and migraines, reduced cognitive control and changes in the brain’s gray matter volume.” Here’s more on the negative effects of smartphone addiction: 1. You’re wasting time While many of us are convinced that multitasking allows us to get more done, multitasking doesn’t really work. Not only are our brains unequipped to handle two dissimilar tasks at once, but trying to accomplish several things at once ends up wasting more time than saving any. Think about it: How well do you retain information when someone’s talking to you as you’re scrolling through emails or watching the latest cat video your friend posted? Even if your body is in a room, it’s easy to miss important information when your brain is somewhere else completely. Plus, let’s face it: No one likes talking to someone who’s “listening” with her face buried in a screen. 2. You’re more anxious Not having your phone around can increase anxiety. One British study found that 51 percent of participants suffer “extreme tech anxiety” when separated from their smartphones. Some of that stems from feeling that, if we’re apart from our phones, we won’t be included when friends make plans or won’t know what the latest Facebook meme is. Even our bodies are starting to recognize when our phones aren’t around. A University of Missouri study discovered that iPhone users who parted with their devices during situations that require a significant amount of attention, like taking a test or completing a work assignment, could result in poorer performance. That’s because, when participants were separated from their phones and then asked to complete simple word search puzzles, their heart rates and blood pressure increased — as did their feelings of anxiety and unpleasantness. 3. You’re not sleeping as well “Check email one last time, make sure no friends posted anything interesting, one last glance of Instagram … oh wait, a new work email came in. Darn it, that afternoon meeting got pushed up. Did I prep enough for it? Should I review things one more time? Wait, it’s late already. I guess I’ll just think about it for the next half-hour while I toss and turn trying to fall asleep.” Sound familiar? Being inundated with stimulating information right before bed often means you can’t sleep well, particularly when we’re presented with situations beyond our control. And most of us are sleeping with our phones. In almost every age group, at least 40 percent of Americans sleep with their phones within reach. For those 25 to 29 years old, the number’s even higher: Almost 80 percent are snuggling up to their devices. The danger isn’t only that each beep overnight has the potential to wake us up. Smartphones also emit a blue light, signaling to the brain that it’s time to wake up. Blue lights suppress melatonin, the hormone that dictates our sleep rhythms. Yes, the struggle to sleep with your phone is real. 4. Your children are picking up your naughty habits “Do as I say, not as I do” is all too real when it comes to smartphone time. Even as parents ask children and teens to lay off Snapchat or put their phones down during dinner, they’re checking calendars, answering texts or indulging in one last game of Candy Crush. It stands to reason then that in almost every study of smartphone use, young adults have the highest usage rates. Children are learning that always being connected is normal — and missing out on the importance of human-to-human interaction. Are You Addicted to Your Smartphone? If any of these apply to you, all signs point to a smartphone addiction: You reach for your smartphone upon waking up and right before bed. It’s not uncommon for you to catch up on emails or the latest in the news while you’re eating. When your phone is out of reach, low on battery or (gasp) completely turned off, you feel anxious or stressed out. Being out of cell phone signal makes you feel like you might be missing something. You live for that next Instagrammable moment. Pavlov’s dogs have nothing on you: When you hear that familiar text sound, you perk up. You’ve checked your phone at least once while reading this article! Treatment Addressing nomophobia involves a combination of strategies: Digital detox: Gradually reducing the amount of time spent on your phone. Setting boundaries: Establishing phone-free zones or times, such as during meals or before bed. Mindfulness practices: Engaging in activities that promote relaxation and reduce anxiety, such as meditation or yoga. Professional help: Seeking therapy or counseling to address underlying anxiety or dependence issues. Behavioral therapies such as cognitive behavior therapy, exposure therapy, systematic desensitization, aversion therapy and hypnotherapy are often used to help treat phobias. Medications: Certain medications can help in severe cases. Support groups: Realizing you aren’t alone and talking with others can help. Self-care: Do things to improve your mental and physical well-being, such as progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises, calming activities, ecotherapy and getting outdoors, etc. In addition, follow these steps to enjoy a life that’s complemented, not ruled, by your smartphone: 1. Turn off your cell phone at least an hour before bed Give your brain a chance to unwind and commit to turning off your phone an hour before bedtime. That means off, not just on silent. Those vibrations and blinking lights are still harmful, as is knowing that you’re just one reach away from seeing the latest. Remember, nomophobia never sleeps, and neither will you. No wonder so many of us are always tired, huh? If you have a legitimate reason for keeping your phone on — your daughter is out with friends or your parents are elderly and you don’t have a landline — turn your phone on “do not disturb,” and place your phone on the other side of the room. In this mode, your phone will silence all notifications but allow you to enable exceptions, such as a phone call from a specific number. Remember: Seeing how many “likes” your last Instagram post received is not a legitimate reason. “But I use my phone as my alarm clock,” you say. “I need it nearby!” To that I respond … 2. Stop shacking up with your phone Get a real alarm clock. (Yes, you can still find these Stone Age relics.) Not only will this allow you to turn off your phone completely overnight (again, unless you need to stay on alert for a family member and don’t have a landline), but instead of waking up with the temptation to see what you missed overnight, you can spend the first moments of the morning stretching, thinking about what’s on schedule for the day or basically doing anything other than checking your phone. For extra credit, I challenge you not to turn your phone on again until your morning routine is finished: You’ve exercised, showered, dressed, eaten breakfast, maybe even read the paper (remember that pastime!) and pushed the kids out the door. 3. Set certain times to check your phone Do you really need to look at every single email the second it’s received? Save your sanity and simultaneously help your productivity by designating certain times to glance at...</p>
