Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 – Every 34 seconds in the United States, somebody dies of heart disease. In fact, cardiovascular disease is currently the leading cause of death in the nation, claiming about 697,000 lives in 2020 alone. In coronary heart disease – the most common type of heart condition – arteries can’t deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart. Lysine, a common amino acid, is believed to inhibit plaque build-up and promote heart health. Moreover, a this study suggests that lysine can lower high blood pressure – a known risk factor for heart disease. Let’s see what other health benefits this nutrient has to offer. Lysine Is a “Jack of All Trades” That Supports the Health of Multiple Systems First of all, what is lysine’s role in the body? A building block for proteins, it is vital for muscle growth and maintenance. And, as it helps to prevent the loss of lean muscle mass, it may be particularly beneficial in improving strength and mobility in elderly people. Lysine also helps to produce collagen – a protein needed for speedy wound healing, healthy skin, and flexible arteries. In addition, lysine contributes to bone health and wards off osteoporosis by supporting the absorption of calcium. It also supports the immune system by assisting the production of infection-fighting antibodies. As if that weren’t enough, this versatile nutrient is also involved in the creation of enzymes and hormones. One more surprising attribute of lysine is its ability to ease anxiety and lower levels of the “stress” hormone, cortisol. In one randomized, placebo-controlled study, a week of supplementation with lysine and arginine reduced anxiety and lowered cortisol in healthy adults with stress-induced anxiety. Finally, this amino acid is believed to help control outbreaks of “cold sores” resulting from the herpes simplex Type 1 virus. Clearly, when it comes to sustaining health, lysine “wears many hats.” Supplementation May Help Keep Blood Pressure in Healthy Range Some researchers maintain that lysine can reduce hypertension (high blood pressure) by preventing pressure buildup in the arteries. Recent research has shown that people with suboptimal lysine intake and high blood pressure experienced lowered blood pressure when supplemented with lysine. In a randomized, placebo-controlled study published in BMC Nutrition, 1,000 mg of lysine a day for 112 days significantly lowered systolic blood pressure (the top number, which measures the force of each heartbeat). In fact, this measurement dropped by an average of almost 20 points! The scientists concluded that the amino acid may be a “useful nutrient” when added to hypertension medications. Lysine May Promote Heart Health by Reinforcing Collagen Nobel prize-winning researcher Linus Pauling maintained that lysine may help promote heart health by strengthening collagen (“like steel rods in concrete,” in his colorful analogy), thereby helping to prevent collagen fracture and blood clots. When there are extra amounts of lysine and the amino acid proline in the blood, Pauling declared, the lipoprotein-a attachment sites are obstructed by lysine, creating a “Teflon-like” coating around the particles and preventing them from binding to the arterial walls. In this way, lysine is believed to prevent plaque buildup – reducing the threat of atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. Unfortunately, these findings have been generally greeted with indifference by many conventional cardiologists. Mostly due to the ground-breaking work of Linus Pauling (and others, such as Dr. Sidney Bush), some natural health experts advise a combination of vitamin C and lysine to reverse atherosclerosis and help prevent heart attacks. For example, the Dr. Rath Health Foundation’s Cellular Recommendations for Heart Health call for 100 to 500 mg of the nutrient a day, along with other amino acids, bioflavonoids, vitamins, and minerals. Boost Dietary Intake With Meat, Beans, and Nuts Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning it is not produced by the body and must be obtained through diet or supplementation. It is found in animal products, including grass-fed beef, dairy products, cage-free eggs, and wild-caught salmon or sardines. For vegetarians and vegans, no worries: lysine is also found in wheat germ, beans, lentils, amaranth, buckwheat, and nuts. While most people get enough lysine through diet, supplementation may be advisable. People recovering from burns or other severe injuries – and those who perform frequent, high-intensity workouts – may require a higher-than-average intake. Natural healers typically recommend amounts of up to 3 grams a day – but consult your own integrative doctor before supplementing. Capable of promoting stable mood, bone health, heart health, and better immunity, lysine is clearly too important to take for granted. Eating a healthy diet can help ensure that you are consuming enough of this health-promoting amino acid.

Dr. Don Colbert – Would you like to improve the condition of your skin? Would you like to transform your skin despite the upcoming dry winter weather? A more healthy and youthful appearance? Collagen can help. However, many popular collagen products are little more than a waste of money. They either do not contain the right type of collagen or the right amount. There is a collagen catch. Transform Your Skin? The Collagen Catch Did you know that most studies that show a significant transformation in skin appearance use 5 to 10, and sometimes even 12+ grams of collagen per day? What’s more, there are over 30 different types of collagen. The type that can transform your skin is Type I. But, if you’d like more benefit from your collagen powder, you can choose a collagen that has 3-4 different types that support ligament, joint, digestion, and immune health. How to Get the Right Amount and Type of Collagen for Skin How do you get Type I Collagen? Type I Collagen is most abundant from bovine and marine sources. However, some experts have concerns regarding bovine (cow) allergies and disease from cows. Many believe the “cleanest” and best Type I collagen comes from marine sources like fish (1). In addition, it’s important to get enough. Since most human studies show benefits when participants consume 5-10 grams of collagen per day, powders are the best form. Unfortunately, gummies, pills, and collagen-fortified foods often contain 0.5-1 grams collagen. Lastly, for best results, choose collagen in the form of hydrolyzed collagen powder. Hydrolyzed collagen is the form that is most efficiently absorbed and distributed throughout the body and skin. In the skin, hydrolyzed collagen has been shown to 1) provide building blocks for skin collagen and elastin fibers, and 2) stimulate the creation and growth of new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid (2). How Does the Right Amount of Type I Hydrolyzed Collagen Transform Your Skin? The Research 1. HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN SUPPORTS SKIN ELASTICITY A 2014 study of 46 women, ages 35-55, showed that eight weeks of collagen powder supplementation improved skin elasticity within just 4 weeks (3). When skin’s elasticity is improved it can stretch and rebound better, without sagging. This increases a youthful appearance. 2. COLLAGEN MAY REDUCE THE APPEARANCE OF WRINKLES Another 2014 study concluded that collagen supplementation reduced wrinkles after just 8 weeks of use (4). What’s more, a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology concluded that collagen supplementation not only improved skin moisture but also produced younger-looking, less-fragmented skin (5). 3. THE STRUCTURE OF SKIN IS AFFECTED BY COLLAGEN INTAKE In a 2017 lab study, researchers found that 6 months of oral consumption of collagen increased the collagen content in the skin. It also improved the skin structure and improved the density of different types of collagen (type I and type III). This resulted in improved color and luster of the skin and fur. While this was a study on mice, it is promising for human skin and hair as well (6). 4. COLLAGEN CAN INCREASE SKIN HYDRATION The same study that showed increased skin elasticity showed a measurable decrease in transepidermal water loss and dryness of skin. What’s more, another study of 20 Japanese women concluded that 10 grams of Hydrolyzed Collagen per day improved the water absorption capacity of the skin compared to the placebo group (7). 5. GET MORE SKIN ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY WITH COLLAGEN Our skin is constantly under assault from oxidative stress from our environment (smoke, pollution, UV rays, etc.). By increasing the antioxidant activity in the skin, we increase our chances of fighting these assaults and reducing age-related results (8). 6. BETTER WOUND HEALING WITH COLLAGEN In a 2009 lab study, researchers found that collagen supplementation produced quicker wound closure and better tissue regeneration at the wound site. What’s more, the treated mice also formed thicker and better-organized collagen fibers (10). 7. COLLAGEN HELPS THE BODY ABSORB MORE NUTRIENTS We depend on our digestive tract to absorb the nutrients our cells, tissues, and organs need to thrive. Collagen can help improve digestion, thereby increasing the beneficial nutrients, fats and amino acids that reach the skin. What Else Can Collagen Do? Again, there are over 30 types of naturally-occurring collagen. Many types support human health. First, Type II collagen supports your immune function and encourages recovery when you are sick. It also supports joint, ligament, cartilage and digestive health. Type II is a major part of our gut lining, and it acts as a barrier between the substances we consume and our bloodstream. This helps both digestion and immune function. It is found in chicken- and bovine-sourced collagen. Next, Type III Collagen promotes cardiovascular health. Remarkably, it helps form arterial walls. Type III collagen is often sourced from bovine and other animals. While 80-90% of human collagen is types I, II, and III, there are other types. Two other important types are V and X. These are important for cell membranes, placenta health during pregnancy, bone formation, and more. When you get chicken or bovine sources collagen, you are usually getting at least a small amount of these types as well. Get the Best Hydrolyzed Collagen to Transform Your Skin & More!

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – Cellulite removal treatments are growing in popularity as more and more people struggle to maintain a healthy weight and look for ways on how to get rid of cellulite. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in 2019 over 2.6 million cosmetic surgery procedures were carried out in the U.S. alone — including over 265,000 liposuction procedures, many of which were performed to remove cellulite. Although they might sound like the perfect quick fixes, liposuction and laser cellulite treatments are not simple means of going from a size 16 to size 6 overnight. The ASPS itself even states, “Liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite — the dimpled skin that typically appears on the thighs, hips, and buttocks — or loose saggy skin.” How can you get rid of cellulite? Nothing can substitute for eating an anti-inflammatory diet and getting enough exercise. Just as with other signs of aging, if you want to reduce cellulite, first and foremost focus on maintaining a healthy weight throughout your adult life. Then, certain topical treatments may help dimply skin become less noticeable and improve skin’s overall appearance. What Is Cellulite? Cellulite is the appearance of lumpy or dimpled “cottage cheese skin,” which predominantly develops on the legs (especially the thighs), butt, stomach and the back of the arms. Some also refer to it as “orange peel skin” because it looks like the tiny bumps that form on the outside of citrus fruits. Basically, cellulite forms when globules of fat develop under the skin and push up against the connective tissue, forming an uneven, “mottled” look to the skin. There are three types cellulite with different severities, ranging from mild to severe. Some of the factors that contribute to this condition are a lack of exercise (a sedentary lifestyle), hormone changes and — you guessed it — a poor-quality diet. It’s possible to develop cellulite at any age, but it tends to get worse as someone gets older due to increased fatty deposits (and often a higher body weight). This condition is more common in women than men, with about 90% of women having some measure of cellulite, particularly as they age and the skin loses its elasticity. However, even teenagers dealing with weight and hormonal changes can deal with this skin concern. Cellulite is not serious or harmful, and therefore many choose to just simply leave it alone. Meanwhile, others become very bothered by unsightly cellulite, especially following life circumstances such as weight gain/loss or pregnancy — or in the summer when it’s common to reveal more skin. Causes What is the main cause of cellulite? Several primary factors contribute to the developmentof cellulite, including: Weak collagen structure of the skin, which leads to skin thinning and loss of elasticity Genetic factors Poor diet Fluid retention Dehydration Lack of circulation (blood flow) Being overweight Hormonal changes, including in estrogen and cortisol Lack of physical activity Some other factors that can cause skin changes, such as cellulite, sagginess, wrinkles and formation of dark spots, include: hormonal imbalances high amounts of stress existing medical conditions, like autoimmune disease or diabetes allergies smoking too much sun exposure other causes of toxicity While the connection between dealing with stress and developing cellulite may seem far-fetched, science has shown that all of the factors above increase inflammation and contribute to signs of aging. For example, according to a research study published in the Journal of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, cellulite can be caused by increased levels of catecholamines due to high stress and raised cortisol levels. Things like stress and a poor diet also cause your body to slow down production of collagen, which is crucial to keep skin looking young. In fact, it’s now believed that collagen (a type of structural protein that forms skin’s layers) plays a big role in regulating cellulite. Dysfunction of collagen-rich fibers called fibrous septae seem to form cellulite dimples, so these are now the target of most professional cellulite treatments. How to Get Rid of Cellulite Can you get rid of cellulite once you have it? Unfortunately, it seems that the answer is not completely. As one 2019 review explains, “Despite multiple therapeutic approaches that attempt to treat cellulite, no procedures have been proven successful long term.” Considering all the lifestyle factors that affect the appearance and health of your skin, it’s understandable why intensive cellulite treatments — including noninvasive devices, such as massage or radio/acoustic frequency, laser and light-based treatments, liposuction, topical creams, injections, and carboxy therapy — are popular options. Unfortunately, these are not long-term solutions for keeping skin looking healthy. In order for some of these cellulite treatments to work — such as submission, vibrational therapy, wave therapy or lasers — ongoing treatments might be needed for many months on end or else results can diminish within six months to one year. How should you tackle cellulite then? As one study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science puts it, “Reducing adipogenesis (fat storage) and increasing thermogenesis (burning fat through body heat) appear to be primary routes, while also improving the microcirculation and collagen synthesis.” Here are the top six all-natural ways to help reduce the appearance of cellulite: 1. Eat a Healthy Diet Can cellulite on your legs go away? Losing weight and then maintaining a healthy body fat percentage may help reduce the appearance of cellulite on your legs or elsewhere. Some of the top foods for decreasing or preventing cellulite are: Flaxseeds — Flax is great for skin health and general health as it modulates estrogen levels and may also increase collagen production. You can sprinkle flaxseed on your breakfast, in your smoothies or simply eat the seeds by themselves. Hydrating foods — Because dehydration can lead to bloating and dry skin, try to eat more naturally hydrating foods. These include fresh veggies and fruit, especially melon, berries, cucumber, celery, citrus fruits and fresh herbs. Making Cellulite Slim Down Juice at home is a great way to consume a bunch of these at once. High-fiber foods — These include vegetables, nuts, seeds and berries. Fiber helps cleanse the colon, curb hunger, support your metabolism and balance hormones. High-fiber foods containing lots of antioxidants, such as leafy greens or berries, are also beneficial because of their ability to decrease free radical damage (which ages skin). Clean protein sources — High-quality protein foods, like grass-fed beef, free-range poultry, pastured eggs, wild-caught fish and organic protein powder, can support a healthy metabolism and aid in cellulite reduction. Ideally, aim to consume at least three to four ounces with every meal. Potassium-rich foods — Flushing excess fluids and waste out of cells can help reduce cellulite. Green leafy vegetables, avocados, bananas, coconut water and cultured dairy are all high in potassium. Healthy fats — Coconut and wild-caught fish contain fatty acids that promote healthy tissue. Consume one tablespoon daily of extra virgin coconut oil and one serving of wild-caught fish (or 1,000 milligrams of fish oil) daily for the best results. Kelp — Kelp contains a compound called “fucoxanthin,” which is found in chlorophyll-bearing green plants and supports metabolic and skin health. Try sprinkling a small amount onto your savory meals. Water — Wondering if drinking lots of water is really that important for reducing cellulite? Yes! Water keeps skin hydrated and helps flush out toxic compounds. Aim to drink eight to 10 glasses of fresh water daily. Well-hydrated skin looks more even, with less of a lumpy, dry or aged look. Try to avoid or reduce these foods, which may cause or worsen cellulite: Sugar and salt — If you think your diet has no effect on cellulite, think again! Here’s why: Sugar causes fluid retention, inflammation and storage of body fat — all of which can increase the appearance of cellulite. Read labels, and aim to reduce or remove added sugar. Limit your sodium intake as well, because salt is one of the main causes of water retention. Stick to a healing diet for best results, which is low in both sugar and salt. Refined flour and refined grain products — These break down quickly into sugar and are high in calories. Food allergens — Foods like gluten, A1 casein found in most dairy, shellfish and peanuts can cause allergies or inflammation in some. These have negative effects on skin health, like potentially decreasing circulation and interfering with normal nutrient absorption. Trans and hydrogenated fats — These are generally unhealthy and found in processed foods. 2. Consume More Collagen Connective tissue – including the layers of the skin – is composed of collagen. When the skin is strong, cellulite appearance is diminished. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and needed for skin’s elasticity, youthful texture and strength. One of the best ways to get more collagen is from consuming bone broth, which also has amino acids like glutamine. Bone broth contains the amino acids called proline and glycine that make up collagen, along with important trace minerals and even antioxidant compounds. The collagen in bone broth can strengthen skin tissue and help reverse the underlying the causes of cellulite. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that patients taking 2.5 grams of bioactive collagen peptides (BCP) experienced “significant decrease in the degree of cellulite and a reduced skin waviness on thighs … regular ingestion of BCP over a period of 6 months led to a clear improvement of the skin appearance in women suffering from moderate cellulite.” As expected, the results were most impressive in women who were overweight. 3. Take Anti-Cellulite Supplements Certain supplements and nutrients can help keep your skin in tip-top shape: Bromelain and proteolytic enzymes — These systemic enzymes have been used with great success to fight inflammation and dissolve gatherings of cellular tissue. According to findings published in Biotech Research Journal, “studies demonstrate that bromelain exhibits various fibrinolytic, antiedematous, antithrombotic, and anti-inflammatory activities.” Uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, gallstones and cellulite may all be broken down more easily and eliminated with help from enzymes. Enzymes such as bromelain, serrapeptase and nattokwinase all have the ability to dissolve fibrinogen (the tissue that holds these unwanted formations together). Kola — This extract has been the subject of many cellulite studies and has shown some positive results. This is a caffeine-free herb that has relaxing properties and can be taken before bedtime. It works by helping improve the elasticity of the skin, while also making it thicker. Green coffee extract (which contains caffeine), African mango and fucoxanthin are additional supplements that offer similar benefits as those above. Caffeine has been shown to stimulate circulation and potentially help with fat-burning, so sources of caffeine are found in many cellulite supplements. 4. Exercise Regularly Can exercises get rid of cellulite? Although long-distance cardio can be of value in boosting your metabolism and helping prevent obesity, doing interval training (also known as burst training) will likely be much more effective. That’s because intervals are more effective at adding muscle to your frame and helping tone you all over. In 2011, a report published in the Journal of Obesity stated, “Emerging research examining high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) indicates that it may be more effective at reducing subcutaneous and abdominal body fat than other types.” Here are some quick facts and tips to keep in mind so you get the most benefits from your workouts: Look for a program that ideally combines burst cardio and resistance training. Aim for workouts that last between about 20 to 40 minutes a day. Interval or burst training is known to increase metabolism and burn calories long after (24–48 hours) your workout is over (known as the afterburn effect). Interval training incorporates short, intense exercises, such as sprinting, and then returns you to a cool-down period briefly. (This concept is also called high-intensity interval training, or HIIT.) If you’re targeting cellulite on your thighs and butt, try to incorporate moves like squats, lunges, donkey kicks and step backs. Two more effective strategies are weight training and isometric training – such as Barre, BarreAmped and Pilates. BarreAmped...

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – Because we cannot see inside the body, the skin often provides the first obvious marks of the passing time and aging. It is a known fact that as we age, our skin becomes less resilient, resulting in dry skin and wrinkles. Often, the first place this is visible is not only the face, but around the eyes. Yes, I’m talking about the dreaded crow’s feet. Now, diet is a huge component in how our skin looks and feels; however, there are ways to positively affect the skin and create a beautiful glow and fewer wrinkles, including less visible crow’s feet, using natural remedies, including this homemade eye cream with four ingredients that help delicate skin. Why We Develop Dreaded Crow’s Feet While is seems that the best solution is to simply replace the oils that we lose due to aging and free radicals found in environmental toxins, it simply isn’t that easy. As reported by the journal Dermato Endocrinology, skin aging is a complex biological process influenced by a combination of factors, such as genetics, cellular metabolism, hormone and metabolic processes as well as chronic light exposure, pollution, ionizing radiation, chemicals and toxins. These factors together lead to the progressive changes in each skin layer as well as changes in the appearance of the skin, especially on the sun-exposed skin areas. Finely wrinkled and dry aged skin, especially in the eye region, is very common due to years of abuse. This happens because of gradual loss of skin elasticity, which is part of the cause of slower healing in older adults. What specifically can help reduce wrinkles around the eyes? Reduced collagen type VII, often caused by sun-exposed aged skin, may contribute to wrinkles by weakening the bond between the dermis and epidermis as we get older. And because of a loss of collagen, older skin begins to look irregular and disorganized by increasing the number of wrinkles and less firm areas of the skin, in particular on the face and around the eyes. The overall collagen content per unit area of the skin surface is known to decline approximately 1 percent per year. Three primary structural components of the dermis — collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) —have been the focus of most anti-aging research pertaining to the skin to include anti-wrinkle creams and various filling agents that you may find at the dermatologist. Therefore, I strongly advise that you use a collagen supplement (powder or capsule/tablet) to boost your collagen levels, and one of the first places you’ll notice improvement will be your crow’s feet. In addition, to achieve healthy, smooth, blemish-free, translucent and resilient skin, consider making a homemade eye cream. 4 Ingredients Because these four ingredients are pure and this eye cream recipe doesn’t contain toxic ingredients, they can be absorbed safely and effectively — helping your skin and the areas around your eyes retain moisture and, therefore, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It works by allowing the nutrients and proteins in these ingredients to encourage cell-regeneration. First ingredient is shea butter. It’s both moisturizing and very hydrating. When applied to the skin, it provides immediate softness and smoothness. But in addition, one study indicates that shea butter boosts collagen production, demonstrating some major anti-aging potential. Next is coconut oil, which is great for the skin, including around the eyes. Research reveals that virgin coconut oil improves the symptoms of skin disorders by moisturizing and soothing the skin. It also protects the skin by enhancing skin barrier function. Vitamin E oil may help improve fine lines and wrinkles by providing an antioxidant boost that protects from sun damage and encourages the healthy growth of new skin cells. When used both internally and externally, antioxidants are known for their ability to fight off free radicals and photo-induced skin aging, including wrinkles and dark spots. Lastly, several essential oils work well for the skin, but I consider frankincense oil the top choice. Benefits include the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity, defense mechanisms against bacteria or blemishes, and appearance as someone ages. It also may help tone and lift skin. How to Make DIY Eye Cream Put shea butter and coconut oil in a glass bowl, then place that bowl in a sauce pan that is filled with water. Make sure to not allow any water to get into the bowl. Place the saucepan with the bowl carefully on the stovetop. Heat to medium and mix oils together with a whisk. Whisk until completely melted. Remove the glass bowl from the stove and let it cool for 30 minutes. Add in vitamin E oil and frankincense essential oil and whisk again. Once mixed, put the bowl in the refrigerator for an hour or until solid. Remove from the fridge. With a regular mixer or hand mixer, beat the oils until they are whipped and fluffy. Fill a glass jar with the eye cream mixture and store at room temperature. Try to use within three months. Apply it morning and night around the eyes, after taking a shower or bath, or at least washing your face, when your skin is still wet. Homemade Eye Cream Recipe To help achieve the best results and to avoid toxic chemicals found in most commercial products, consider making a homemade eye cream. This DIY recipe includes four of the best ingredients for the delicate skin under the eyes. INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons unrefined shea butter 2 tablespoons unrefined coconut oil ½ teaspoon vitamin E 10 drops frankincense essential oil INSTRUCTIONS Put shea butter and coconut oil in a small glass bowl, then place that bowl in a sauce pan that is filled with water. Do not allow any water to get into the bowl. Place pan (and bowl) on a stovetop and heat to medium and mix oils together. Whisk until completely melted. Remove the glass bowl from the stove and let it cool for 30 minutes. Add the vitamin E oil and essential oil and whisk again. Once mixed, put in refrigerator for an hour or until solid. Remove from the fridge. With a regular mixer or hand mixer, beat the oils until they are whipped and fluffy. Fill a glass container with eye cream mixture and store at room temperature. Apply every morning and night around the eyes, after taking a shower or bath or at least washing your face, when your skin is still wet. Enjoy! To read the original article click here.

Wendy Miller via NaturalHealth365 – The curry plant (Helichrysum italicum) is part of the daisy family and has proven medicinal properties. People who live near the Mediterranean, where the plant grows naturally, have used the curry plant for hundreds of years. Recent studies have proven that the plant’s essential oils have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, and other properties. In addition to offering aromatherapy benefits and culinary uses, the oils of the curry plant can slow down the aging process and help improve overall general health. Curry Plant Contains Powerful Compounds That Help Deter Skin Aging The curry plant contains 78 different compounds that make up over 98% of the entire composition of the essential oil. The essential oil from the curry plant can slow down the actions of two enzymes that speed up the aging process. Both collagenase and elastase are responsible for breaking down fibers in the skin that control elasticity and recoil. With the body’s ability to maintain collagen and elastin, the skin can remain flexible and elastic, slowing down the formation of wrinkles and lines and keeping your facial features smooth and soft. But Wait, That’s Not All! Curry Plant Also Improves Digestion Curry essential oils also slow down the aging process by improving digestion. When the body can better utilize the nutrients it receives from the foods you eat, the skin and connective tissues can remain pliable and resilient. Many of the oils, vitamins, and minerals you consume in your food are damaged before being absorbed and used by the body. Curry relieves digestive issues making the process much more efficient. Here Is How the Curry Plant Speeds Up Wound Healing Curry essential oil also contains components that speed up the blood clotting process. When blood can clot efficiently, wounds will heal much faster. Depending on where the wound is, it may take longer to heal. Curry essential oils can speed up the process. Since curry essential oil also allows the body’s collagen and elastin fibers to remain intact, wounds can heal much faster and with less scarring. In addition, the skin is stronger and more resilient, making it more resistant to lines and wrinkles. Fight Infections and Skin Aging With This Potent Essential Oil Curry essential oil is quite effective at treating various types of skin conditions, including contact dermatitis and yeast infections. Skin conditions can speed up the aging process, especially if they disrupt the way collagen and elastin function. By keeping the skin strong and free from infections, curry essential oil can slow down the aging process and, at the same time, keep your skin healthy and vibrant. Healthy skin has an abundance of collagen and elastin that allows the skin to resist the formation of wrinkles and lines. What’s the Bottom Line? For centuries, people from the Mediterranean have used the curry plant as food and medicine. With studies available to prove the effectiveness of the plant’s essential oil properties, you can use it with confidence when trying to keep your skin young and vibrant. If you are considering giving curry plant oil a try to tap into its anti-aging benefits, be sure to dilute it with a carrier oil before applying it to your skin.

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – You might already know that I’m a huge fan of Greek food. It’s one of the cuisines that naturally falls into the Mediterranean diet, which is chock-full of fruits, veggies and healthy grains, along with simple dishes that are full of flavor. This avgolemono soup recipe is one of my favorite classic Greek soups. What Is Avgolemono? (Key Ingredients) Avgolemono means “egg lemon,” and it’s this combination that gives the Greek soup its rich, velvety texture. Rice or orzo pasta is usually cooked right in the soup, which can range from a broth-like consistency to one that’s closer to a hearty stew. While poached chicken is often added to the soup, I’ve kept this one meat-free and vegetarian-friendly. Of course, you can make chicken avgolemono soup by simply adding chicken, but as I mentioned, I opted to make this avgolemono soup vegetarian. The beauty of an authentic Greek avgolemono soup recipe is that it requires so few ingredients but packs a ton of taste. What kind of rice is used in avgolemono? You’ll see many avgolemono soup with orzo versions, but in my simple avgolemono soup, instead of white rice, which is devoid of nutrients, I opted for sprouted brown rice. While brown rice is healthier than its white counterpart, sprouted is the way to go. Sprouted grains are easier for the body to digest, breaks down gluten and allows for greater nutrient absorption. This soup also gets a protein boost from the addition of protein powder made from bone broth. You get all the benefits of bone broth, including collagen and gelatin, all of which support a healthy gut, in an easy-to-use form. No need to spend 24 hours waiting for broth to cook on the stove! Finally, the stars of this soup are the egg and lemon. Eggs, of source, add additional protein and collagen, combining for a heart-healthy, joint-supporting powerhouse with the bone broth, while the lemon adds both flavor and burst of a vitamin C to boost immunity. The trick here is to continuously whisk the eggs in the soup. Instead of cooking and turning into a scramble-y mess, you get that lovely, silky texture that sets this lemon soup apart. How to Make Avgolemono Soup Bring the rice and protein powder mixture to a boil. Stir until the ingredients marry. Then reduce heat, and simmer for 35–40 minutes, covered. Whisk together the eggs and lemon juice gently, until they’re well-combined. Pour the egg and lemon mix into the pot, stirring continuously to prevent curdling. Top with the brown rice crisps and green onions, and season with salt and pepper to taste for this delicious avgolemono soup. Simple Homemade Greek Avgolemono Soup Recipe DESCRIPTION Mediterranean diet soups are full of fruits, veggies and flavor. This Avgolemono Soup Recipe is one of my favorite classic Greek soups. INGREDIENTS 4–5 cups water 1 scoop powder made from bone broth (unflavored) ½ cup sprouted brown rice 4 eggs + 2 egg yolks juice of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon unsalted butter ½ tablespoon paprika salt and pepper to taste Toppings: organic brown rice crisps chopped green onions INSTRUCTIONS Bring rice and broth mixture to a boil, stir until ingredients marry and reduce heat and simmer for 35–40 minutes, covered. Whisk eggs and lemon juice gently until well-combined. Pour into the pot, stirring continuously to prevent curdling. Top with brown rice crisps and green onions, and season with salt and pepper to taste. To read the original article click here.

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN – This creamy broccoli soup recipe is not only delicious, but it’s full of healthy fats from coconut oil and coconut milk, along with fiber and antioxidants from broccoli and other greens. Whether you’re searching for a healthy soup that will fill you up and support you in losing weight, or just one’s that’s tasty, rich and comforting, you’ll love this simple “cream of broccoli soup” recipe made with entirely nutrient-dense, healthy ingredients. Key Ingredients Here’s a bit more about some of the benefits associated with the ingredients in this creamy broccoli soup recipe: Broccoli — Broccoli is a popular type of cruciferous vegetable that contains isothiocyanates, sulforaphanes and indoles, all of which are strong antioxidants and stimulators of detoxifying enzymes. These are thought to help protect cells and the structure of DNA, potentially having cancer-fighting abilities and other benefits such as managing inflammation. Broccoli also provides you with many other nutrients such as glucosinolates, carotenoids, chlorophyll, phenolic compounds, vitamin E, vitamin K, potassium and calcium. Coconut oil/coconut milk — Coconut oil has many health benefits, such as helping to provide you with MCFAs (medium-chain fatty acids) that are easy to digest, can support a healthy metabolism and can even aid in weight loss (especially if you consume it while on low-carb, keto diet). Coconut oil adds creaminess to this recipe without the use of milk, making it a great option for those who are dairy/lactose intolerant or on plant-based diet. Greens (such as kale, spinash, swiss chard or collards) — Greens such as kale and spinach boast a wide array of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, such as vitamins K, A and C, fiber, manganese, calcium, isothiocyanates and others. Eating greens is correlated with support for detoxification, help protecting against cancer and metabolic syndrome, and decreasing inflammation and free radical damage. Garlic — Garlic benefits include the fact that it’s high in sulfur compounds (responsible for garlic’s strong scent and taste), as well as flavonoids, oligosaccharides, amino acids and allicin. These protective compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, meaning they may help to support the immune system, cardiovascular system and fight oxidative stress. Chicken bone broth — Real, chicken bone broth (whether homemade or made from bone broth protein powder) is rich in nutrients like collagen, gelatin and amino acids such as glycine, arginine and proline. These can be helpful for protecting and healing your gut lining, and for supporting skin health and joint comfort/function.

University of Washington via News Medical – It was wartime and food was scarce. Leaders of England’s effort to wage war and help the public survive during World War II needed to know: Were the rations in lifeboats adequate for survival at sea? And, among several experiments important for public as well as military heath, how much vitamin C did a person need to avoid the deadly disease scurvy? In one experiment at the Sorby Research Institute in Sheffield, called the “shipwreck” experiment, volunteers were fed only what the navy carried in lifeboats. The grueling experiment resulted in more water and less food being carried in lifeboats. One of the more robust experiments run on human subjects during this time in England, which has had long-lasting public health consequences, was a vitamin C depletion study started in 1944, also at Sorby. This medical experiment involved 20 subjects, most of whom were conscientious objectors living in the building where many experiments, including the shipwreck experiment, were conducted. They were overseen by a future Nobel Prize winner, and detailed data was kept on each participant in the study. “The vitamin C experiment is a shocking study. They depleted people’s vitamin C levels long-term and created life-threatening emergencies. It would never fly now.” Philippe Hujoel, lead author of a new study on the Sorby vitamin C experiment, a practicing dentist and professor of oral health sciences in the UW School of Dentistry Even though two trial participants developed life-threatening heart problems because of the vitamin C depletion, Hujoel added, none of the subjects were permanently harmed, and in later interviews several participants said they would volunteer again given the importance of the research. Because of the war and food shortages, there was not enough vitamin C available, and they wanted to be conservative with the supplies, explained Hujoel, who is also an adjunct professor of epidemiology. The goal of the Sorby investigators was not to determine the required vitamin C intake for optimal health; it was to find out the minimum vitamin C requirements for preventing scurvy. Vitamin C is an important element in your body’s ability to heal wounds because the creation of scar tissue depends on the collagen protein, and the production of collagen depends on vitamin C. In addition to knitting skin back together, collagen also maintains the integrity of blood vessel walls, thus protecting against stroke and heart disease. In the Sorby trial, researchers assigned participants to zero, 10 or 70 milligrams a day for an average of nine months. The depleted subjects were then repleted and saturated with vitamin C. Experimental wounds were made during this depletion and repletion. The investigators used the scar strength of experimental wounds as a measure of adequate vitamin C levels since poor wound healing, in addition to such conditions as bleeding gums, are an indication of scurvy. In the end, the Sorby researchers said 10 milligrams a day was enough to ward off signs of scurvy. Partly based on these findings, the WHO recommends 45 milligrams a day. Hujoel said that the findings of the re-analyses of the Sorby data suggest that the WHO’s recommendation is too low to prevent weak scar strength. In a bit of scientific detective work, Hujoel said he tracked down and reviewed the study’s data, and with the aid of Margaux Hujoel, a scientist with Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, put the data through modern statistical techniques designed to handle small sample sizes, techniques not available to the original scientists. The results of their work were published Monday in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The Hujoels discovered that the data from this unique study -; which has been a cornerstone used by WHO and other agencies for establishing healthy levels of vitamin C in humans -; needed more than an “eyeball method” of data assessment. “It is concluded that the failure to reevaluate the data of a landmark trial with novel statistical methods as they became available may have led to a misleading narrative on the vitamin C needs for the prevention and treatment of collagen-related pathologies,” the researchers wrote. “Robust parametric analyses of the (Sorby) trial data reveal that an average daily vitamin C intake of 95 mg is required to prevent weak scar strength for 97.5% of the population. Such a vitamin C intake is more than double the daily 45 mg vitamin C intake recommended by the WHO but is consistent with the writing panels for the National Academy of Medicine and (other) countries,” they add. The Hujoels’ study also found that recovery from a vitamin C deficiency takes a long time and requires higher levels of vitamin C. Even an average daily dose of 90 milligrams a day of vitamin C for six months failed to restore normal scar strength for the depleted study participants. To read the original article click here.

Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DMN, CNS – Wondering about major sources of collagen? Fish collagen definitely tops the list. While there are benefits associated with all animal collagen sources, fish collagen peptides are known to have the best absorption and bioavailability due to their smaller particle sizes compared to other animal collagens, making them antioxidant powerhouses. Bioavailability is highly important since it largely determines the efficacy of any nutrient you ingest. Fish collagen is absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently into the body and has superior bioavailability over bovine or porcine collagens. Since it’s absorbed more efficiently and enters the bloodstream more quickly, it’s considered the best collagen source for medicinal purposes. Fish collagen’s ability to be more easily absorbed by our bodies is thanks to its lower molecular weight and size, which allow the collagen to be absorbed at a higher level through the intestinal barrier into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body. This leads to collagen synthesis in the joint tissues, bones, skin dermis and many other essential body systems. Since we don’t tend to eat the parts of the fish containing collagen (mainly skin and scales), making homemade fish stock or supplementing with collagen is the next best thing. What Is Fish Collagen? Fish collagen is a complex structural protein that helps maintain the strength and flexibility of: skin ligaments joints bones muscles tendons blood vessels gums eyes nails hair It’s a type I collagen, which is the most abundant collagen in the human body. Type I is best known for providing the foundation for beautiful skin, strong connective tissues and sturdy bones. Fish collagen peptides have very specific amino acid compositions with a high concentration of glycine, hydroxyproline and proline. When fish collagen is ingested, hydroxyproline peptides are not completely digested to free amino acids and can be detected in the blood. These hydroxyproline peptides stimulate cells in the skin, joints and bones, and they lead to collagen synthesis through cell activation and growth. The scales, skin, bones and fins of fresh or saltwater fish are used for the creation of fish collagen supplements. Since these parts are considered waste products during fish processing, using them to create other products helps reduce environmental pollution. Health Benefits 1. Anti-Aging Since fish collagen is a type I collagen and type I collagen is what our skin consists of, it’s not surprising that it can benefit the skin. It helps prevent and improve any signs of skin aging, making it a great anti-aging food. Possible skin benefits of consuming this collagen include improved smoothness, better moisture retention, increased suppleness and prevention of deep wrinkle formation. Hydrolyzed fish collagen is composed of small, low molecular weight peptides, which are easily digested, absorbed and distributed by the human body. Research published in 2015 in the Open Nutraceuticals Journal states how numerous clinical trials have now been performed showing the efficacy and benefits of collagen peptides on skin properties, including hydration, elasticity and reduction of wrinkles. Researchers conclude that hydrolyzed collagen is a smart weapon in the everyday fight against the undesirable yet visible signs of aging. 2. Bone Healing and Regeneration Fish collagen has shown its ability to increase the body’s own natural collagen production. In the past, studies have demonstrated that collagen peptides from fish skin might have a positive effect on bone health by increasing bone mineral density and exerting anti-inflammatory activity on osteoarthritis. The goal of one 2013 study was to determine effects of fish collagen peptides on collagen synthesis, quality and mineralization. Findings of the study show that the fish collagen has a positive effect on collagen synthesis and collagen quality. Researchers also found that the fish collagen was helpful in the matrix mineralization of bone-synthesizing cells in vitro. While this study did not involve human subjects, it does show how fish collagen is biomaterial that can aid bone healing and regeneration. Furthermore, researchers from the NC Oral Health Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Dentistry examined the effects of fish collagen peptides in an osteoblastic cell culture system. They found that fish collagen peptide supplementation “exerts a positive effect on osteoblastic cells in terms of collagen synthesis, quality and mineralization, thereby suggesting the potential utility of FCP for bone tissue engineering.” 3. Wound Healing Fish collagen might help your next scrape, scratch or more serious wound to heal better and faster. The ability of a wound to heal is ultimately based on collagen, which is essential to wound healing because it helps the body form new tissue. Type I collagen is the most abundant structural component of the dermal matrix so it makes perfect sense that having more type I collagen in your body might help wounds to heal faster. It was previously believed that collagens were just structural supports. Now we know that collagen and collagen-derived fragments control many cellular functions, including cell shape and differentiation, cell migration, as well as the synthesis of a number of important proteins. Collagen also plays a critical role in all phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. 4. Increased Protein Intake By consuming fish collagen, you don’t just get collagen — you get everything that collagen contains. Fish collagen is over 97 percent protein with no fat, sugars or carbohydrates, making it one of the absolute best protein foods on the planet. It also has a very distinctive amino acid profile. Amino acids are organic compounds that combine to form proteins. They, along with proteins, are the building blocks of our bodies. By increasing your protein intake through consuming collagen, you can improve your workouts, avoid muscle loss (and prevent sarcopenia) and have a better recovery post-workout. More collagen protein in your diet also always helps with weight management. 5. Antibacterial Abilities Research out of Canada published in 2016 found that fish collagen has yet another impressive component: collagencin, which is an antibacterial peptide from fish collagen. This study found that collagencin completely inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, more commonly known as staph or staph infection. Staph is a very serious, highly contagious infection caused by bacteria commonly found on the skin or in the nose. For the future, marine collagens look like a promising source of antimicrobial peptides, which could improve both human health as well as food safety. Nutrition The exact nutritional content of fish collagens varies. Here’s an example of a 10-gram serving of hydrolyzed fish collagen, which contains about: (9) 45 calories 9.4 grams protein 0.07 milligrams potassium 0.05 milligrams calcium 0.04 milligrams iron Fish Collagen vs. Other Types Bovine (cow or beef) collagen: Bovine collagen comes from cows, specifically from their skin, bones and muscles. It’s made of mostly types 1 and 3 collagen, which is a good fit considering these are the most abundant types created and found in the human body. It’s a rich supply of glycine and proline and therefore useful for creatine production, building muscle and also helping the body make its own collagen. Chicken collagen: The type of collagen most abundant in chicken collagen is type 2, which is best for building cartilage. This makes it beneficial for joint health, especially since this source also provides chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate — both of which have anti-aging effects. Most supplements containing collagen usually use chicken collagen and provide type 2. Fish collagen: Collagen derived from fish has been found to be easily absorbed and provide mostly type 1 collagen, with the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. Because type 1 can be found throughout the entire body, consuming more fish collagen has been associated with benefits for the joints, skin, vital organs, blood vessels, digestion and bones. Hydroxyproline is an important component of the collagen triple helix, and lower levels have been associated with joint degradation and therefore symptoms/signs of aging. Hydroxyproline is needed for collagen stability and is created by modifying normal proline amino acids after the collagen chain is built. This reaction also requires vitamin C (to assist in the addition of oxygen), which is why vitamin C deficiency can cause abnormalities in collagen levels. Egg shell membrane collagen: Egg collagen, found in the shells and whites of eggs, contains mostly type 1 collagen. It also has type 3, 4 and 10, but by far the most type 1, just like the human body (approximately 100 times more type 1 than type 4). It provides glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid and various amino acids that have benefits for building connective tissue, wound healing, building muscle mass and reducing pain/stiffness. History The first time chemists extracted collagen from fish skin appears to be 1985. Fish collagen is sometimes called marine collagen, but marine collagen products are sometimes sourced from shellfish and jellyfish, which I don’t recommend. Fish collagen is sourced from the scales, skin, bones and fins of fresh or saltwater fish. Historically, full use of the fish body can be seen in many dishes, including the heads and eyes. In Chile and other parts of South America, fish heads are used in a dish called caldillo de congrio, in which the fish heads are boiled together with vegetables and herbs to make a nutrient-dense, collagen-rich stock. This is used as the base for the soup. Fish collagen is high in essential and non-essential amino acids. How to Use You can find a fish collagen supplement at your local health store or online. It’s available as a pill, liquid or powder. You should choose one that comes from a reputable company and is non-GMO and gluten-free. Also, makes sure it has no fillers, sugar, artificial flavors or artificial preservatives. You might find hyaluronic acid and vitamin C included in your marine collagen supplement because they aid the absorption of collagen. Beware of collagen supplements made in countries with loose manufacturing controls and standards. When collagen is hydrolyzed, the protein molecules are broken into smaller molecules. Hydrolyzed fish collagen supplements are more easily digested and absorbed by your body. Fish collagen is different from marine collagen. Many marine collagen products are sourced from shellfish and jellyfish, which I don’t recommend. Always store collagen products in a cool, dry place. You might be scared to buy and use fish collagen products because you think they’ll smell and/or taste like fish. Not to worry — there are many fish collagen products on the market today that are tasteless and odorless or have a neutral, non-fishy taste. You can easily mix powdered collagen with smoothies, coffee, tea or a cup of hot water. You can even add it to soups or sauces. Want to get your dose of fish collagen first thing in the morning? Try adding fish collagen powder to my Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal Recipe — it’s sure to start your day right! Homemade fish stock is another great way to obtain the collagen benefits of fish. Try a Homemade Fishstock Recipe (wine optional) loaded with collagen and other health-promoting nutrients, along with other fish bone brothrecipes. In addition to adding a fish collagen product to your diet, you can also get this tremendous protein through collagen supplementation, such as collagen hydrolysates. Collagen hydrolysate supplements are easy to find at most health food stores or pharmacies. Risks and Side Effects There are no commonly reported side effects of fish collagen. If you’re allergic to fish, then you might need to avoid these collagen products. However, many producers of collagen products derived from fish remove the water-soluble allergens from the skin and significantly reduce the possibility of an allergic reaction. If you consume fish collagen and have a mild allergic reaction, discontinue use. If you have a serious allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately. Speak with your doctor before taking it if you take any other medications or have any ongoing health concerns. Final Thoughts Fish collagen peptides are known to have the best absorption and bioavailability due to their smaller particle sizes compared to other animal collagens. They’re absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently into the body. Fish collagen is considered the best collagen source for medicinal purposes and great for most diets, including the Paleo diet. It’s a type I collagen, which is the most abundant collagen in the human body. Type I is best known for providing the foundation for beautiful skin, strong connective tissues and sturdy bones.
