More than 299,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2024 alone. A new study published in Nutrients reveals environmental endocrine disruptors, including BPA (Bisphenol A) chemicals, are tied to a heightened risk of prostate cancer. Elevated BPA levels have a causal relationship with a higher incidence of prostate cancer The study found that higher exposure to BPA chemicals in men was associated with an increased risk of developing prostate cancer. Researchers utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2003 and 2012 and analyzed several factors, including BPA levels, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration, medical history, and sociodemographic information. Sociodemographic data considered in the study included: Body mass index (BMI) Poverty income ratio (PIR) Race and ethnicity Smoking status Cholesterol levels Statistical analysis revealed a positive correlation between BPA exposure and prostate cancer risk. This is likely due to BPA’s interaction with estrogen receptor-α, a hormone expressed in the prostate gland, which may play a role in the development of prostate cancer. Defining prostate cancer risk through quantification According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a PSA level of 4 ng/mL is considered a threshold for prostate cancer risk. Levels below 4 ng/mL are associated with low cancer risk, while readings above 4 ng/mL indicate a higher risk. From the nearly 54,000 participants in NHANES, 2,738 men met the study’s inclusion criteria. The analysis identified a correlation between PSA and BPA levels, showing that for each unit increase in BPA concentration, there was a 2.760 ng/mL rise in PSA. Further data showed that men classified as high-risk for prostate cancer had a 42.5% to 72% increased likelihood of developing the disease with each additional unit of BPA concentration. A single unit increase in urinary BPA levels corresponded to a 2.760 ng/mL spike in PSA, reinforcing the connection between BPA exposure and elevated PSA levels, which may lead to the development of prostate cancer. Additional analysis of a subgroup revealed that individuals aged 75 and older had an even higher risk. Those with hypertension also showed an increased risk of prostate cancer, which escalated alongside rising BPA concentrations. The positive association between BPA and PSA levels has a key cutoff point Research has identified a significant inflection point in the relationship between BPA concentration and PSA levels at 4.46 ng/mL. The positive correlation between BPA exposure and PSA levels is notably stronger at this specific threshold, particularly in older American males. This cutoff point marks a critical value where the risk of elevated PSA, and potentially prostate cancer, becomes more pronounced with increasing BPA levels. This finding is important because previous studies may have overlooked such specific benchmarks. Medical professionals will likely adopt the 4.46 ng/mL cutoff as a valuable reference for prostate cancer screenings. This could improve early detection, especially as BPA exposure becomes a recognized factor in prostate cancer risk. Solutions to reduce your BPA exposure BPA (Bisphenol A) is widely present in many everyday products, making it impossible to avoid them completely. However, there are effective ways to significantly reduce your exposure to this harmful chemical, particularly for men concerned about the link between BPA and prostate health. 1. Minimize plastic use Reduce or eliminate your use of plastic products, especially those that come into contact with food. BPA is commonly found in plastic containers, water bottles, and packaging materials. Opt for BPA-free or non-plastic alternatives such as glass, stainless steel, or ceramic. 2. Transfer food to non-plastic containers After shopping, transfer foods from plastic or canned packaging into non-plastic containers. Cans often have BPA in their lining, so moving food to safer storage options, like glass containers, reduces potential BPA leaching. 3. Avoid heating food in plastic Never microwave or heat up a food in plastic containers, as heat can cause BPA to leach into the food. Instead, use alternative containers like glass or ceramic. Plus, as a ‘side note,’ don’t use a microwave – which damages the quality of your food. 4. Limit canned foods BPA is often used in the lining of canned foods, so try to reduce the consumption of canned goods. Choose fresh or frozen foods whenever possible, and look for brands with BPA-free packaging. 5. Use BPA-free water bottles and tableware Replace plastic water bottles with BPA-free versions, or use stainless steel or glass bottles. Similarly, switch to BPA-free plates and utensils to further limit exposure. 6. Say no to sales receipts Many thermal paper receipts contain BPA, which can be absorbed through the skin. If possible, decline printed receipts or use digital receipts as an alternative. 7. Be mindful of other sources BPA is also found in protective eyewear, dental sealants, and personal care products. Be conscious of the materials you come into contact with and seek BPA-free alternatives where applicable. By following these steps, you can significantly reduce your exposure to BPA and minimize the health risks associated with these endocrine-disrupting chemicals. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Al Sears, MD, CNS &#8211; Here in South Florida, spring break is in full swing. Temperatures are in the mid-to-high-80s, and tourists are flocking to our beautiful, sunny beaches. Of course, that also means it’s prime time for sunscreen companies to kick up their marketing efforts in an attempt to whip up more fear over the sun. They want to scare you into thinking that each time the sun strikes your unprotected skin, you risk malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. If you’re a regular reader, you know that I’ve been vocal about Big Retail’s money grab and how they put out misinformation because they profit each time you slather on their toxic sunscreens. But here’s what they’re not telling you… Two-thirds of all sunscreens on the market wouldn’t even pass the safety tests proposed by the FDA.1 According to a study by the Environmental Working Group, the nonprofit organization found that more than 60% of the products evaluated either didn’t offer adequate sun protection or they contained potentially harmful chemicals. And worse yet, these harmful chemicals that you apply topically are being absorbed into your blood. A recent clinical trial funded by the FDA and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirms this. Researchers studied the effects of the active ingredients in four popular sunscreens applied topically and found that the chemicals were absorbed into the bloodstream. And at higher concentrations than an established FDA threshold. Yet the FDA continues to tell us that sunscreen is safe, despite the toxic chemicals. Sunscreen delivers chemicals and known carcinogens onto your skin and into your bloodstream — chemicals that are banned in other countries. One of the main chemicals used in sunscreens to filter out UVB light is octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC). This toxic compound can be found in the vast majority of sunscreens on the market, even though studies found it can kill mouse cells — even at extremely low doses. Other harmful chemicals include benzophenone and avobenzone. These attack the cells in your body, causing premature aging. They are also estrogen mimics that can create hormonal imbalances, cause allergic reactions and skin irritation, and are known to promote the onset of breast cancer.2 Additional chemicals commonly found in sunscreen that you should avoid include: Parabens. A well-known endocrine disruptor, parabens mimic estrogen, upset hormonal balance, and cause reproductive cancers in men and women. PABA (may be listed as octyl-dimethyl or padimate-O). Para-aminobenzoic acid attacks DNA and causes genetic mutation when exposed to sunlight. Mineral oil, paraffin, and petrolatum. These agents coat your skin like plastic. This clogs pores, traps toxins, slows skin cell growth, and disrupts normal hormone function. They’re also possible carcinogens. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Sometimes listed as “from coconut” or “coconut-derived,” when combined with other chemicals, it becomes nitrosamine, a powerful cancer-causing agent. SLS penetrates your skin’s moisture barrier, allowing other dangerous chemicals to enter your bloodstream. Phenol carbolic acid. Animal studies show this is toxic at even low doses. It can cause circulatory collapse, paralysis, convulsions, coma, and death from respiratory failure. Acrylamide. Animal studies show it can cause breast cancer, testicular cancer, and reduce sperm count. Propylene glycol. A major component of antifreeze, this common skincare additive, can lead to dermatitis, as well as kidney and liver abnormalities. PEG, polysorbates, laureth, ethoxylated alcohol. These are potent carcinogens containing dioxane. Short-term exposure to this forever chemical causes eye, nose, and throat irritation, while long-term exposure to leads to kidney and liver damage, as well as cancer. How to build a safe sun barrier using 2 natural ingredients I recommend natural compounds that allow you to have fun in the sun without burning. If you’re planning a summer beach vacation, now is the time to start supplementing! Take tocotrienols, your sun-protection powerhouse: Vitamin E is actually eight vitamins in one — four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Research shows that tocotrienols are the real powerhouse. Studies reveal consuming tocotrienols halts sun damage that may have been triggered during the day and reduce the likelihood of any skin cancer cells forming.3 One study found that the more tocotrienols you have in your diet, the more it accumulates in your skin. That means you’re constantly building up your own personal natural sunscreen.4 Most people can’t get enough tocotrienols in their diet, so I recommend supplementing with 50 mg of tocotrienols twice a day. Like all fat-soluble vitamins, take them with a meal. And make sure you get supplements that contain natural vitamin E — not its synthetic form. Vitamin E in the form of all-rac-alpha-tocopherol-acetate or dl-alpha tocopherol should be avoided. There are serious questions about their safety. Get sunburn protection with SOD. Superoxide dismutase, or SOD, is your body’s master antioxidant. It works by neutralizing dangerous superoxide radicals in your body called “anions.” Ultraviolet rays from the sun can create these anions. Most antioxidants can’t help. But SOD has 3,500 times the antioxidant power of vitamin C. It triggers the conversion of these superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide, a less harmful oxygen-based free radical.5 In other words, they become harmless oxygen and water. SOD then remains “on site” to extinguish the fiery rampage of inflammation that follows. In one study, 15 people who were hypersensitive to the sun took SOD. They all reported a higher tolerance to the sun. They also had fewer tendencies to redden or have skin irritation from the sun.6 Another study showed that SOD allowed fair-skinned people to get eight times more sun before burning.7 I recommend supplementing with 500 mg superoxide dismutase formula. Sadly, the rates of breast cancer have increased dramatically in recent decades.  Today, breast cancer remains the most common type of cancer affecting women, other than skin cancer. Why are breast cancer rates skyrocketing – could the growing number of cancer-causing chemicals found in our environment be to blame?  Data from one new study suggests yes. Hundreds of Chemicals Found in Common Everyday Products Shown to Promote the Synthesis of Hormones Linked to Breast Cancer, New Research Finds The study, published in the recent edition of Environmental Health Perspectives, used laboratory testing to identify chemicals that may cause breast cancer by elevating the synthesis of estradiol (estrogen) and progesterone, two hormones linked to an increased breast cancer risk. The researchers found that 296 chemicals demonstrated the ability to increase the activity of one or both of these hormones.  Chemicals, including hexythiazox, oxyfluorfen, pirimiphos-methyl, and 3,3′-dimethylbenzidine, were found in various sources, including “pesticides, consumer product ingredients, food additives, and drinking water contaminants.” The researchers note that at least 53 of the chemicals tested are currently being used in consumer products, despite the fact that there is “inadequate information to assess carcinogenic potential.” Incredibly, as many as 13% of the nearly 300 chemicals were previously identified as “unlikely” carcinogens or reproductive/developmental toxicants, despite showing cancer-causing potential in the comprehensive laboratory study.  How could such a misclassification occur?  One explanation relates to a failure of conventional toxicology testing. Generally, toxicology testing of U.S. consumer products only looks at whether chemicals mimic estrogen or bind to hormone receptors.  But what is rarely tested is whether chemicals can actually trigger estrogen production, which is exactly what these researchers discovered. “Because [estradiol and progesterone] are important risk factors for breast cancer, chemicals that increase their synthesis may also increase the risk for breast cancer and must be prioritized for further research and exposure reduction,” the authors conclude. Beyond Everyday Household Items, Common Pharmaceutical Products Have Been Associated With Breast Cancer, Too It’s not just food, pesticides, and household products that can expose you and your loved ones to chemicals that increase the risk of cancer.  Unfortunately, many drugs and medical products have an elevated cancer risk, too. Remember hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?  Once widely recommended by medical professionals, HRT has been strongly linked to breast cancer, as just one example. We see this especially among postmenopausal women, who are more likely to have breast cancer when they have higher blood levels of estradiol, according to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. According to BreastCancer.org, combination HRT increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer by as much as 75 percent. Another group of medications linked with breast cancer – oral contraceptives, according to the National Cancer Institute.  Indeed, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and World Health Organization identified combination oral contraceptives (which contain estrogen and progestin) as a Group 1 carcinogen back 2005 – putting “the pill” in the same category as arsenic, asbestos, and tobacco smoke.
