					<description><![CDATA[<p>Michael Greger M.D. FACLM via Nutrition Facts &#8211; Fasting has shown potential benefits for various autoimmune diseases, including lupus, multiple sclerosis, and mixed connective-tissue disease, though most evidence is based on individual case reports rather than large-scale studies. Various fasting regimens have been attempted for inflammatory autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, chronic urticaria, mixed connective-tissue disease, glomerulonephritis, and multiple sclerosis, as well as osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. The strongest evidence of the benefits of fasting surrounds the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis The strongest evidence of the benefits of fasting surrounds the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune joint disease, as I detailed in my previous blog post. A German study suggested benefits for osteoarthritis, too, and reported improvements in pain and joint function, but we’d really need randomized controlled studies to know for sure. The researchers despaired they only had 30 patients, but that’s 30 times more than many reports on fasting in the medical literature, which may detail only single cases. So, does fasting work for mixed connective tissue disease? One woman, for example, with a rare autoimmune disease known as mixed connective-tissue disease, which can cause all sorts of painful and distressing symptoms, was treated with steroids in an attempt to suppress her immune system. After 21 days of fasting, and off her medications, “she had no further complaints.” More importantly, her symptoms seemed to stay away, and “she remained free of medication.” So, does fasting work for mixed connective tissue disease? All we can say is that it worked at least once. A similar success story was reported with fibromyalgia. A woman with pain throughout her body, who couldn’t sustain activity and was on a lot of drugs, became “symptom-free” after a 24-day fast and remained that way at her “follow-up visit 1 month later.” However, when a modified fasting regimen was tried on dozens of individuals, the benefits seen at week 2 largely disappeared by week 12, as shown below and at 1:32 in my video Fasting for Autoimmune Diseases. What about lupus? A 45-year-old woman who had remained in pain despite taking immunosuppressive drugs was pain-free by day four of fasting and remained symptom-free for one year when her symptoms began to recur, but she wiped them out again with a second seven-day fast, “after which she had no symptoms.” Note, though, that she didn’t only fast. She water-only fasted, then followed it with a plant-based diet in an attempt to solidify the gains. On its own, a strictly plant-based diet without any animal protein has been shown to control symptoms in at least some cases. The same with sacroiliitis, a common manifestation of ankylosing spondylitis, an autoimmune arthritis that primarily affects the spine, causing back pain that can last for years. In the case of a 33-year-old man, all sorts of conventional therapies and drugs were tried, but the pain wouldn’t go away. So, the complete avoidance of animal foods was recommended, and “the complaints improved distinctly and persistently” within days—until the patient ate meat again. Once again, back on plant-based nutrition, he was off most of his drugs and almost completely free of symptoms. So, at least in this case, inflammatory pain refractory to other treatments was abolished by eating more healthfully. At least it’s worth a try! Autoimmune glomerulonephritis, where your body attacks your own kidneys, is a common manifestation of lupus. In a case series, 29 patients were fasted for 60 hours, then had only fruits and vegetables until they got better. They described such remarkable recoveries that fasting, in their opinion, “should be an essential part of treatment.” What about multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune nerve disease? Individuals with MS were randomized to a “fasting-mimicking diet”—in this case, a modified fast that started out with an 800-calorie-a-day diet of fruit, rice, or potatoes, followed by a week sipping a few hundred calories of flaxseed oil and vegetable broth, then transitioning to a plant-based Mediterranean diet. Over the next three months, they experienced a significant improvement in overall quality of life. They also tried a ketogenic diet, but that failed to offer clinically or statistically significant overall benefit, as you can see below and at 3:34 in my video. And, finally, let’s look at chronic urticaria (hives), where you get a rash of itchy weals and welts, as seen here and at 3:40 in my video. Individuals started to improve on day 3 of the fast Individuals started to improve on day 3 of the fast, and their hives completely disappeared by day 11. This is consistent with studies from Germany and Japan that evidently showed around 75 percent effectiveness for such patients with what looks like some sort of tea with sugar diet. It’s certainly worth giving fasting therapy a try, but, of course, fasting should only be done under trained medical supervision. Otherwise, you’d never know if you have some hidden underlying kidney issue that could land you in a coma, then maybe in the morgue. You have to have your kidney function and electrolytes monitored to make sure your body is up for the challenge. Water-only fasting is not a cure or treatment in the traditional sense “Despite the possible good outcomes, water-only fasting is not a cure or treatment in the traditional sense; it is simply intended to promote the body’s self-healing mechanisms.” Since fasting is unsustainable, by definition, “to maintain the results obtained by water-only fasting, it is necessary to adhere to a health-promoting lifestyle that includes a diet of minimally processed plant foods, adequate sleep, and robust physical exercise.” If you haven’t seen it yet, check out my related video Fasting for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Some scratch their heads while giving something some serious thought in a “hmm, let me think about that” sort of moment. But for many others, a serious scratching is desired because there is a genuine and persistent itch on the head, specifically an itchy scalp. Often, we assume it must be dandruff, a common problem, but there are many conditions that can cause a dry, itchy scalp — or scalp pruritus — in addition to dandruff, such as ringworm or even a bacterial infection caused by an autoimmune condition. With itching being the most common symptom, skin infections, swelling, redness, balding and damaged hair may also result from an itchy scalp. Common treatments are usually in some form of antimicrobial or keratolytic therapy (overseen by a dermatologist), steroids and special diets. However, there is no doubt that one of the most effective treatments for itchy scalp is a good old shampoo scrub to help remove loose and scaly skin. And to really stop the itch long-term, you need to find out what’s causing it. Let’s look at some of the best natural treatments for an itchy scalp and the most common causes. 6 Natural Remedies for Itchy Scalp 1. Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil is an amazing essential oil also known as melaleuca. What’s great about tea tree oil is that it provides antioxidant benefits and is antimicrobial, which means it has the ability to fight bacteria, viruses and fungus. According to research published in the International Journal of Dermatology, numerous studies have shown that tea tea oil is great for various inflammatory symptoms, including seborrheic dermatitis, ultimately helping with the healing process. Another study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology closely followed the results that tea tree oil had on subjects with dandruff using a shampoo that contained 5 percent tea tree oil. An improvement of 41 percent was reported by those who used the tea tree oil shampoo, helping relieve itchy scalp and dandruff itself. 2. Clean Your Hair, Brushes and Combs While not all causes of itchy scalp have anything to do with a contagious condition, some, such as tinea capitis, do. Maintaining good personal hygiene is very important in addition to avoiding sharing combs and brushes. Since tinea capitis, or ringworm, is more common in children, make sure to take extra care with educating your children on these best practices and simple natural remedies. 3. Use a Hair and Scalp Mask Have you ever tried a banana, avocado and honey hair and scalp mask? These three ingredients can actually do some pretty phenomenal things to your head and scalp. Honey, for example, has long been known as an ancient remedy for wound healing, with many reports suggesting that the microorganisms found in honey help fight bacteria and fungi. A hair mask can provide the perfect bacteria fighters and, if used a few times a week, can really make a difference in a healthy way. Simply combine a small mashed banana, two tablespoons of honey and half an avocado until well-blended. Then apply it to your hair, making sure to cover the scalp. Leave it on for 20–30 minutes, then wash hair with a natural shampoo. 4. Avoid Inflammatory, Infection-Causing Foods Much like candida, fungus can be caused and inflamed due to foods you eat. It’s critical that you avoid inflammatory foods, such as anything processed, sugar, gluten, dairy, soy, peanuts and alcohol, to name a few. The best thing you can do is make sure your diet is filled with antifungal foods. Some of those foods include garlic, apple cider vinegar, banana, avocado, flaxseed, ginger and coconut oil. 5. Avoid Putting Chemicals on Your Hair Chemicals are found in most products found on the shelves at your local store. These chemicals can lead straight to an itchy scalp, bumps on the scalp and other scalp conditions. The good news is that this is an easy fix. By avoiding chemicals and choosing natural remedies, you can bypass the negative effects. Opt for making your own — such as rosemary mint shampoo, homemade conditioner or apple cider vinegar hair rinse — and see if that solves the problem. Because many of these suds contain chemicals and other other rash-causing agents, they may irritate the scalp. This irritation can cause lots of itching and redness, and even present allergic reactions, such as hives and wheezing. 6. Glycerin A study in SKINmed Journal investigated how effective a moisturizing leave-on lotion containing a high concentration of glycerol (10 percent) and other known scalp benefitting agents (saturated fatty acid and sunflower seed oil) to reduce dandruff over an eight-week treatment period with three applications per week. Results included a significant reduction in the dandruff, including better water barrier function and hydration, over the span of the trial. Glycerin also showed how it helped relieve an itchy scalp. 7. Aloe Vera Aloe vera is a great natural treatment for dry hair or an itchy scalp. It has nourishing properties, and the vitamins and minerals that are present in the plant keep your hair strong and healthy. Because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties, studies indicate that it helps with dandruff, and the gel’s enzymes can rid the scalp of dead cells and promote the regeneration of skin tissue around the hair follicles. Aloe also helps stop the itching associated with dandruff or a dried scalp. Too many shampoos and conditioners are full of chemicals that damage hair and can even cause inflammation and skin irritations; adding aloe vera is an effective way to keep your scalp free of bacteria and uncomfortable skin reactions. Itchy Scalp Causes 1. Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are the most common when it comes to itchy scalp causes. Itching and flaking are how the body responds to the inflammation of the overgrowth of yeast. Yeast is typically found on the scalp and other areas of the body where more hair is located. While the presence of yeast is common, it’s the over-presence of yeast that creates the problem. In particular, a yeast called malassezia can cause excess skin cell growth and irritate the scalp. To get more specific, dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are of a continuous spectrum of the same disease that affects the seborrheic areas of the body, and often those who have eczema will have dandruff. Dandruff occurs on the scalp and usually involves itchy, flaking skin, but you many not see actual inflammation. On the other hand, seborrheic dermatitis can affect the scalp (including having a sensitive scalp) as well as other areas of the body, but in addition to itchy, flaking or scaly skin, which can be severe, it involves inflammation. Characteristics like the immune system, genetics, emotional stress and nutrition can all affect the actual occurrence and severity of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. 2. Allergic Reactions from Food and Shampoos Allergic reactions can occur from numerous sources, but two of the most common sources are from your food and your shampoo. There are so many foods, such as processed sugar, peanuts and soy products, that contain inflammation- and fungus-causing attributes, and unless you avoid them, you’re likely to have some problems. Why Has Candida Become a Modern-Day Problem? Candida is one of the 400 organisms that live in our mouth, digestive tract, and skin.  Candida albicans is the main yeast in the human body and is normally kept in check by the beneficial bacteria within the intestines. In a healthy digestive system – Candida lives in approximately one Candida cell for every million bacteria.  When the number of yeast cells grow out of the 1 in 1,000,000 ratio, a person is said to have a flora or yeast imbalance. It is estimated that over 80% of United States citizens have a problem with Candida.  Naturally, the foods we consume – especially those loaded with overly-processed sugars – encourage yeast overgrowth. Let’s not forget the issue of chronic stress – which releases cortisol (the ‘stress hormone’) continually.  Too much cortisol can turn off the immune system, raises blood sugar levels, and will kill off friendly bacteria within the gut. A Prescription for Sickness and Premature Death According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ‘skyrocketing rates of antibiotic prescriptions now suggest that as many as four out of five Americans may be getting antibiotics annually.’  You may be wondering – what’s this got to do with Candida? The overuse of antibiotics is clearly linked to the overgrowth of yeast in our digestive tract.  Many natural health experts would agree that taking too many antibiotics is a major reason for this epidemic. I only wish more conventionally-trained physicians would consider that antibiotics wipe out most of the good bacteria leaving yeast unharmed.  At the very least – they should all push their patients to consume probiotics – when being prescribed antibiotics.  In the absence of any competition, yeast colonies grow into all the empty nooks and crannies of the small and large intestine, causing many unwanted health problems. What Else Promotes Candida Overgrowth? I’m glad you asked. Birth control pills, cortisone, steroids, and chemotherapy also kill friendly bacteria, such as street and pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol, and lack of oxygenation through a sedentary lifestyle.  Keep in mind that friendly bacteria actually feed on Candida, so anything diminishing their numbers can cause Candida to grow out of control. What Are the Symptoms of Candida? The typical Candida symptoms include jock itch, depression, anxiety, mood swings, heartburn, indigestion, fatigue, food allergies, joint pain, acne, migraine headaches, recurring cystitis, vaginal infections, premenstrual symptoms, foggy thinking, dandruff, athlete’s foot, ear infections, and eczema. Candida has been implicated in the impairment of the immune system along with the central nervous system.  It has been investigated as the underlying cause of most conditions, including heart, bowel, thyroid disease, and arthritic and autoimmune conditions. Candida is known to be intimately involved in weight gain, Epstein-Barr, asthma, allergies, cancer, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorders, periodontal disease, and even autism. How Can We Test for Candida Overgrowth? A simple blood test can help.  You’ll want to check your levels for IgG, IgA, and IgM Candida antibodies.  These can be checked through most labs.  High levels indicate an overgrowth of Candida. Stool testing can check for Candida in the colon.  The lab can usually determine the species of yeast as well as which treatment will be most effective.  Just make sure that your doctor orders a ‘comprehensive stool test’ rather than the standard variety. The urine Organix Dysbiosis test detects a waste product of Candida yeast overgrowth known as D-Arabinitol.  An elevated test indicates an overgrowth.  This test will determine if the problem is in your upper gut or small intestines. The spit test can be done at home.  The first thing, when you wake up in the morning, is to put some saliva into a glass of water before you put anything into your mouth. If the saliva floats, it is fine, but if within 15 minutes you notice projections extending down into the water, it is said to be a sign that you are harboring the invasive form of Candida.  If the water turns cloudy, your spit sinks to the bottom of the glass, or you see strings – you are looking at a Candida problem. What’s the Best Way to Treat Candida? Effectively treating Candida involves stopping the yeast overgrowth, restoring the friendly bacteria that usually keep them in check, and healing the gut. Addressing this overgrowth primarily requires a low sugar diet.  Sugar is what feeds yeast, so eliminating sugar in all of its simple forms is a must.  Cut out pasta, bread, baked cookies, muffins, bagels, and most, if not all, processed foods. Generally speaking, overeating creates a high residue of undigested food – which feeds opportunistic organisms such as Candida.  And, don’t eat fast.  Therefore, chew your food at least 30 times to produce the saliva that prepares the body for healthy digestion. The idea is to allow friendly microbes to breakdown all the food you eat. Obviously, using diet alone not only takes months for results but isn’t as effective as using a protocol – which includes herbs, probiotics, and natural antifungals such as caprylic acid in coconut oil.
