And, while Western medicine tends to treat peptic ulcers with an array of drugs – including antibiotics and antacids – these drugs can cause serious side effects. So, what does cabbage juice have to do with all of this? You may be surprised to discover a natural therapy – from nearly 70 years ago – that can offer a drug-free solution for those suffering. In fact, as early as 1950, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine was conducting studies supporting the ability of cabbage juice to heal peptic ulcers naturally and safely. The physician, Dr. Garnett Cheney, had discovered that fresh cabbage juice contains a potent anti-ulcer factor – which he dubbed “vitamin U” (for “ulcer”). Now, recent research has shed new light on the humble cabbage’s impressive arsenal of disease-fighting phytochemicals – and on the identity of “vitamin U.” Fascinating study shows cabbage juice helps to speed up the healing process By 1950, Dr. Cheney was aware of research showing that cabbage juice could prevent the development of laboratory-induced ulcers in animals. But, he wondered, could it promote healing existing ulcers in humans? He found that it could. In Dr. Cheney’s small but impressive study, cabbage juice emphatically outperformed the standard medical treatment of the time. Thirteen peptic ulcer patients – seven with duodenal ulcers and six with gastric ulcers – were treated with a quart of fresh cabbage juice a day. Duodenal ulcers are located in the upper portion of the small intestine, while gastric ulcers form in the stomach. The healing time for duodenal ulcer craters in the cabbage juice group averaged ten days – while published literature on duodenal patients treated with standard therapy recorded healing time at an average of 37 days. The healing time for gastric ulcer patients in the cabbage juice group was seven days – compared to 42 days for patients treated with standard medical therapy (consisting of a bland diet, antispasmodics, and sedation). In other words, the cabbage juice promoted the healing of ulcer lesions within a week to a week-and-a-half, while healing time in conventional treatment averaged five to six weeks. So, you can easily see why Dr. Cheney was so heartened by the results! Important to note: A second clinical study involving 100 patients published in the Journal of the California Medical Association also showed accelerated healing of ulcers – as did a third, placebo-controlled study conducted at San Quentin Prison. But why was this simple remedy so effective? Cabbage compounds constitute a “dream team” of stomach-soothing, ulcer-healing compounds One secret of cabbage juice’s healing powers is its content of a pair of amino acids, glutamine, and methionine. A form of methionine called methionine S-methyl sulfonium, or MMS, is believed to be the “vitamin U” of which Dr. Cheney spoke. MMS has been shown to stimulate the production of protective mucous – and has potent antioxidant abilities that allow it to ward off tissue-damaging oxidative stress. Studies have shown that MMS supports stomach healing after exposure to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – which are notoriously damaging to the stomach lining. As for glutamine, it is a natural antacid strong enough to rival the effect of commercial acid-reducing medications. Allantoin, another cabbage constituent, has stomach-soothing effects as well. But cabbage juice’s “master stroke” against ulcers is probably its high levels of glucosinolates – which suppresses the H. pylori bacterium. Significantly, scientists report that this common bacterium is responsible for 70 to 90 percent of all ulcers. The remainder of peptic ulcers is believed to be caused by exposure to medications – particularly NSAIDs. Cabbage juice offers a wide range of important micronutrients and disease-fighting benefits Cabbage, scientifically known as Brassica oleracea, is a true superfood – chock full of beneficial plant compounds. Its juice is rich in vitamin K, needed for normal blood clotting and efficient wound healing. Cabbage juice is also a good source of magnesium and potassium and is surprisingly high in antioxidant vitamin C. A single cup of shredded cabbage provides up to a third of the RDA (recommended daily allowance). In addition, fresh cabbage and cabbage juice are also excellent sources of lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair of carotenoids that help to protect against macular degeneration. Cabbage juice is also high in manganese, a mineral needed for proper nervous system function. Yet a cup of cabbage juice contains a modest 22 calories – and virtually no fat. Bonus benefit: Research reveals an ever-growing roster of benefits from the phytochemicals in cabbage In addition to its antibacterial effects, sulforaphane in cabbage has been shown to protect against cancer – and to help alleviate damage from radiation therapy. Researchers at the University of Missouri found that apigenin – a cabbage flavonoid also found in celery – slowed the growth of breast cancer tumors. To further ramp up disease-fighting benefits, experts advise opting for juice from red cabbages. These contain anthocyanins, natural plant pigments with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help to protect against cancer and heart disease. Here Is Why Bees Are Critical to Maintain Our Food Supply The impact that bees have on our environment is immense.  They are a crucial component in pollination which means the growth of flowers, trees, and other plants that provide food and shelter for animals and humans.  They are major contributors to interconnected, complex ecosystems that support life for diverse species to coexist. They are master crop pollinators.  Remove the bees, and our food supply will be threatened.  No bees mean no food gardens, and that means empty plates. They also produce honey which possesses remarkable healing properties.  High-quality, organic, raw honey works as an antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial making it as beneficial for the body as it is for making life a little sweeter. Yes, bees are that important. And this is what is currently happening and why our bees are dying. It’s Time For More Rigorous Regulations on Pesticides Researchers and environmental advocates are calling for more stringent regulations for pesticides as the ones currently in place are ineffective in protecting bees.  Scientists recommend that not only should individual pesticides or chemicalsbe tested, but common combinations be tested as well. Many chemical companies sell a “cocktail” comprised of several different pesticides and chemicals designed for agricultural purposes.  While the individual ingredients have undergone testing, there is no testing for the compounds formed when the chemicals are combined. Survival of Bees Are Affected by MANY Threats  Pesticides are not the only threat bees face.  Poor nutrition and parasites can also affect bees, but not in a synergistic manner that pesticides do.  Invasive species, habitat loss, and pollution also factor into the decline of bees, but again, not to the magnitude that unregulated pesticide compounds do. Our bees are important, and as guardians of our world, it is our responsibility to protect them.  More research is needed to study and address all of the threats that bee populations face and examine and analyze pesticide and chemical compounds used in agricultural settings and elsewhere. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 &#8211; Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition that impairs memory and cognitive abilities, currently affects over 6 million Americans – and causes the death of 83,000 people every year.  Unfortunately, rates of the disease are soaring, with the Alzheimer’s Association predicting that this number will climb to 13 million by the year 2050. Conventional pharmaceutical drugs to address Alzheimer’s disease have shown disappointing results, and researchers are searching urgently for novel therapeutic agents to use against this debilitating condition.  Now, recent research has provided a ray of hope. In a review published in January 2021, the authors reported that ginger combats the oxidative stress, inflammation, and neuron cell death that contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers:  Neuroprotective Effects of Ginger Help Improve Memory and Cognition In a review published in Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy in 2021, the authors used human, animal, and cell studies to evaluate the effects of ginger – and its bioactive constituents gingerol, shogaol, and borneal – on Alzheimer’s disease.  Scientifically known as Zingiber officinale, ginger is an ancient herb that has been revered in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries for its ability to treat a host of ailments – including coughs, colds, infections,rheumatism, digestive problems, and fevers.  (And yes, ginger has a long history of herbal use for memory problems as well!) The team noted that studies on fish, mice, and humans have consistently shown that ginger can improve memory and cognition.  In one study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, researchers assessed the effects of ginger supplementation on cognitive tasks and working memory in middle-aged women.  The reviewers reported that ginger improved scores for word recognition, spatial working memory, and numeric working memory.  Researchers believe that ginger enhances memory by increasing the expression of a protein known as nerve growth factor (NGF). Encouragingly, ginger has also been shown to inhibit beta-amyloid peptides, which have been tied to “senile plaques” that trigger Alzheimer’s disease.  And the effects can be dramatic. In one study, treatment with ginger reduced amyloid plaque-induced behavioral dysfunction – along with brain cell death.  In addition, a compound in ginger known as 6-shogaol has been shown to help block inflammatory chemicals, or interleukins, involved in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.  And, finally, ginger boosts levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential for memory and learning. The authors concluded that ginger possesses “great potency for improving memory functions” and is a “safe nutraceutical that can be applied to combat neurodegenerative diseases.” They called for more research to further explore the exciting neuroprotective effects of ginger. Destructive Free Radicals Spur Alzheimer’s Disease Scientists think that Alzheimer’s disease stems from age-related impairment in the cell mitochondria, which triggers the release of harmful free radicals.  The subsequent oxidative damage causes all sorts of mischief – such as increasing the neurofibrillary tangles and beta-amyloid plaques, which contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. Free radicals also cause the release of toxins such as malondialdehyde while affecting levels of antioxidants – including glutathione and superoxide dismutase – in the body’s natural defense system. By the way, Alzheimer’s disease is the leading form of dementia – a steady decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills.  Sadly, experts say the incidence of dementia doubles every ten years after age 60. Ginger Has All the Right “Anti’s” to Prevent Disease Neuroprotection is not the only weapon in ginger’s arsenal against disease.  The authors had high praise for ginger’s other therapeutic effects as well, noting that its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers help it act against cancer and type 2 diabetes.  Ginger is also antibacterial, antifungal, and antispasmodic – and can act as a natural fever reducer.  As if that weren’t impressive enough, ginger may even promote weight loss, lower blood sugar and help decrease levels of harmful LDL cholesterol. Believe it or not, ginger is just getting started!  The review authors also noted that a ginger constituent known as 6-gingerol could help protect against stomach ulcers, boost the immune system, protect the liver and alleviate allergic reactions.  (In fact, it’s difficult to think of a condition that ginger doesn’t help!) Use Fresh or Powdered Ginger to Add Peppery, “Zippy” Flavor to Recipes While ginger is treasured in herbal healing, it has a multitude of culinary uses as well.  You can utilize fresh ginger root or powdered ginger to enliven beef, poultry, and fish recipes – along with sauces, stews, vegetables, and salads.  You can even steep ginger into a soothing, warming tea by thinly slicing an inch or two of ginger root and boiling it for 10 minutes.  (Add honey and lemon juice for even more flavor and antioxidant punch!) Incidentally, ginger’s close relative, turmeric, is believed to have many of the same therapeutic effects as ginger – thanks to its content of a powerful antioxidant known as curcumin.  So why not combine both of these flavorful spices in the same recipe? 					<description><![CDATA[<p>UT Southwestern Medical Center via News-Medical &#8211; One member of a large protein family that is known to stop the spread of bacterial infections by prompting infected human cells to self-destruct appears to kill the infectious bacteria instead, a new study led by UT Southwestern scientists shows. However, some bacteria have their own mechanism to thwart this attack, nullifying the deadly protein by tagging it for destruction. The findings, published online today in Cell, could lead to new antibiotics to fight bacterial infections. And insight into this cellular conflict could shed light on a number of other conditions in which this protein is involved, including asthma, Type 1 diabetes, primary biliary cirrhosis, and Crohn&#8217;s disease. &#8220;This is a wonderful example of an arms race between infectious bacteria and human cells.&#8221; Neal M. Alto, Ph.D., Study Leader and Professor of Microbiology at UT Southwestern and  Member of Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center Previous research has shown that the protein, called gasdermin B (GSDMB), was different from other members of the mammalian gasdermin family. Related gasdermin proteins form pores in the membranes of infected cells, killing them while allowing inflammatory molecules to leak out and incite an immune response. However, GSDMB – found in humans but not in some other mammalian species, including rodents – doesn&#8217;t form pores in the membranes of cultured mammalian cells, leaving its target a mystery. Using a novel screening technology, Alto and colleagues discovered that a protein toxin called IpaH7.8 from shigella flexneri, a bacterium that causes diarrheal disease, directly inhibits GSDMB. Biochemical experiments show that IpaH7.8 places a chemical tag on GSDMB that marks it for cellular destruction. To understand why shigella flexneri rids human cells of GSDMB, the researchers placed GSDMB within synthetic mammalian and bacterial cell membranes. While GSDMB left the synthetic mammalian membranes unharmed, it poked holes in the bacterial membranes. Further investigation showed that immune cells called natural killer cells stimulate this process. Alto notes that inhibiting the ability of shigella IpaH7.8 to counteract GSDMB could lead to new types of antibiotics. And because genetic variants of GSDMB have been linked to a variety of inflammatory diseases and cancer, better understanding this protein could lead to new treatments for these conditions too.
