Patrick Tims via NaturalHealth365 – The pervasive presence of this toxic substance in everyday items creates a significant health threat. BPA (Bisphenol A), a colorless and soluble chemical, is likely within reach right now, as it’s commonly used in plastics and embedded in so many consumer products. The pervasive presence of this toxic substance in everyday items creates a significant health threat. A recent study in The Journal of Hazardous Materials links early BPA exposure to a higher risk of serious health issues, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, stroke, and heart disease. This early exposure can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to long-term consequences that extend well into adulthood. BPA is found in the most common consumer products BPA is found in food packaging, processed foods, consumer products, and even industrial items, making it nearly impossible to avoid. As an endocrine disruptor, this chemical alters hormones, increasing the risk of chronic diseases over time. Unfortunately, because it’s so widespread, exposure often begins early in life, during those crucial formative years. Research shows that BPA exposure in childhood sets the stage for cardiometabolic health issues that persist into adolescence and adulthood. By damaging blood vessels and the heart, BPA compromises the body’s ability to regulate weight, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and process nutrients effectively, leading to long-term health challenges. A closer look at the BPA research that’s shaking up the health industry To better understand BPA exposure, the research team used direct and indirect methods to predict its impact. They cross-referenced food consumption diaries with demographic data, urine samples, and blood biomarkers, adjusting for key variables like overall energy intake. Participants were asked to provide detailed information about their food and drink choices, including when and where they consumed them and specifics like preparation methods, portion sizes, brand, and packaging. Because BPA exits the body quickly, 24-hour urine samples were analyzed to more accurately measure daily exposure. The team followed up at 4-, 7-, and 10-year intervals, with a 13-year follow-up for adolescents, to track the long-term effects of early exposure. BPA causes a multitude of health problems most aren’t aware of According to the study, BPA exposure is linked to increased fat mass, particularly around the waist, leading to a higher risk of abdominal obesity. This type of fat accumulation is especially concerning, as it’s associated with a greater risk of metabolic conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, BPA exposure can significantly impact insulin function, raising insulin resistance and levels in the body. This disrupts the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar effectively, which, over time, can lead to chronic conditions such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The compound’s effects on metabolism can be subtle but serious, impacting long-term health in often overlooked ways. Tips to reduce BPA exposure If you have a child, or teen at home, reducing their exposure to BPA is essential. While BPA is widespread in consumer products, there are simple actions you can take to limit its presence in your home. When shopping, avoid processed foods and choose organic options instead. Once home, transfer food from plastic packaging into BPA-free containers, such as glass or stainless steel. To further reduce BPA exposure, minimize the use of plastics whenever possible. Opt for bulk items instead of those packaged in plastic and choose products with plastic-free packaging. By making these small changes, you can significantly lower your family’s BPA exposure and support healthier long-term outcomes.

Patrick Tims via NaturalHealth365 – We will examine this study, which observes the link between premature birth, low birth weight, and other peri/prenatal concerns associated with exposure to glyphosate and other environmental toxins. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the world, accounting for massive spots of agricultural production and invading every part of our communities. While the link between glyphosate and certain types of cancers has already been established, there is emerging data that suggests that glyphosate impacts prenatal health and birth outcomes as well. We will examine this study, which observes the link between premature birth, low birth weight, and other peri/prenatal concerns associated with exposure to glyphosate and other environmental toxins. While environmental toxins like glyphosate are more pervasive than most people realize, we’ll provide actionable steps to help you reduce your exposure and safeguard the health of you and your family. Understanding glyphosate exposure risks to unborn babies Researchers were concerned about the potential harmful effects of glyphosate on fertility and birth outcomes, particularly for individuals living in agricultural areas where glyphosate is heavily used. They focused on communities with lower economic mobility, as these individuals often face the highest levels of exposure. To understand the issue, it’s important to know how glyphosate works. Glyphosate is a powerful herbicide that kills plants unless they are genetically modified (GMO) to resist it. The same company that produces glyphosate also sells GMO seeds designed to survive its application. As a result, glyphosate is often sprayed liberally on fields, eliminating weeds while saturating the soil, groundwater, and air with a highly toxic chemical. Researchers analyzed data from U.S. counties where glyphosate use was especially high, often in areas growing GMO crops like corn and soybeans, which were already well-suited to those regions. After 1996, glyphosate usage soared, and researchers reviewed over 9 million birth records spanning 1993 to 2021 to assess its impact. They compared birth outcomes – such as birth weight and gestational length – in counties with high glyphosate use to those with significantly less exposure. The findings were concerning. On average, babies born in areas with higher glyphosate exposure had gestational periods shortened by a full day and weighed an ounce less at birth. Alarmingly, the effects were even worse for babies who were already at risk of being premature or having low birth weight, although the study couldn’t pinpoint the exact reasons for this heightened vulnerability. Overall, the research demonstrated that glyphosate exposure negatively affects gestational time and birth weight for all babies, with the most severe outcomes seen in already vulnerable populations. Families with lower socioeconomic status, who are often more exposed and have fewer resources to reduce their risk, bear the greatest burden. Compounding risks of other environmental toxins Undoubtedly, the relentless presence of air pollution and the widespread use of plastics have caused significant genetic damage over generations. Heavy metals, air pollutants, BPAs from disposable plastics, pesticides, herbicides, and chemical runoff contaminate groundwater and poison agricultural communities daily. When you combine the impact of glyphosate on farmers and rural populations with these other environmental toxins, the effects on children’s gestational and birth health, as well as their long-term well-being, are deeply concerning. Glyphosate is particularly insidious. Rural communities are exposed not only when it is applied to crops but also through its residue, which remains on food long after harvest. Wheat and potatoes are especially problematic, as they are heavily treated with glyphosate, and traces persist when they reach the market. Despite the position of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that these levels pose ‘no safety concern,’ the continued presence of glyphosate in our food supply raises serious questions about its long-term impact on health. Solutions and preventative measures Unfortunately, those corporations with wealth and power often prioritize profit over public health, leaving vulnerable communities to bear the brunt of harmful practices. Companies like Monsanto (now owned by Bayer) have deep pockets to lobby politicians and keep glyphosate legal. The power to create change lies in grassroots, community-driven efforts where people unite to demand better from their representatives and protect their communities. Start by lobbying your congressional representatives, making it clear that their re-election depends on their support for your stance against glyphosate use. Building local community organizations to educate others about the dangers of glyphosate can also have a significant impact. At the very least, push for transparency by ensuring your community is informed when large-scale glyphosate applications are planned. Advocating for herbicide-free green spaces in your town is another proactive step. On a personal level, you can reduce your exposure to glyphosate by supporting small farms that produce organic crops. In many cases, buying your food from local sources can save you money and the long-term health benefits far outweigh the expense. Investing in a high-quality water filtration system is another critical measure, especially for those living in rural or agricultural areas where contamination risks are higher. While it’s uncertain whether glyphosate will ever be thoroughly scrutinized for its toxicity in the U.S., you can still take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. By wisely investing your time, energy, and resources – whether through advocacy, education, or personal choices – you can help secure a healthier future for your family and your communities.

Patrick Tims via NaturalHealth365 – Think your metabolism is just about the genes you inherited? New research suggests otherwise. Scientists at Washington State University recently published findings in Nutrients that challenge this common belief. Their study points to something interesting: elderberry juice might help rev up your metabolism. While it might sound surprising, this dark purple juice does more than just taste good – it seems to boost your metabolism and could even help you maintain a healthy body weight. The research behind the surprising benefits of elderberry juice This wasn’t just any quick study – researchers at Washington State University conducted a carefully controlled, 5-week crossover trial to understand what elderberry juice could do. The findings are particularly interesting because obesity affects over 70% of adults in the United States, and we’re always looking for natural ways to help. Here’s how they did it: They gathered 18 adults with higher BMIs (over 25 kg/m²) who were otherwise healthy and had them drink either elderberry juice or a matching placebo for a week, took a break, and then switched drinks. What makes this study solid is that they controlled participants’ diets (40% fat diet) for 4 days during each test period to ensure accurate comparisons. Each participant drank about 12 ounces (177.5 grams) of elderberry juice daily, which delivered about 720 mg of beneficial compounds called cyanidin-3-glucoside equivalents. How elderberry juice improves your metabolism The study revealed some fascinating changes in participants’ bodies. At the most basic level, the juice shifted their gut bacteria, increasing helpful bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Faecalibacterium while reducing less beneficial types. This matters because gut bacteria are crucial in how the body processes nutrients. Most notably, the elderberry juice improved how participants’ bodies handled sugar and fat. When testing blood sugar levels after meals, researchers saw significant improvements in glucose control. Participants’ insulin levels dropped by nearly 10%, suggesting their bodies were becoming more efficient at processing sugar. Perhaps most impressively, the juice enhanced participants’ ability to burn fat – a process called fat oxidation after meals and during exercise. The data showed a remarkable 27% increase in fat burning among those drinking elderberry juice. Tips to implement elderberry juice into your daily meals While elderberry juice, native to Europe, might not be available at your local store, you can likely find it at a nearby health food store. You can also purchase it online. Many enjoy elderberry juice “straight” in a glass or mixed with water, seltzer, or tonic. It also works well blended into smoothies for a metabolic boost.

Stephanie Woods via NaturalHealth365 – Protein supplements are a big business in the United States. In 2023, the market exceeded $9.69 billion. As more people strive to improve their health, lose weight, and get more fit, this figure is expected to continue climbing. The general consensus among consumers is that protein supplements are “natural,” and since they are typically found in health food stores and wellness sites, then they must be safe. But are they? The Clean Label Project’s Protein Category analyzed 160 products from 70 of the leading brands for protein supplements. The 2024-25 Protein Powder Category Report provides vital data regarding some concerning ingredients and potential contaminants that consumers should know before taking them. The results are eye-opening. An alarming 47% of the products tested exceeded the toxic metal safety threshold set forth by California Proposition 65. In simple terms, most of the protein supplements tested were potentially unsafe. Understanding proposition 65: Context for the findings To put the findings in context, you have to understand Proposition 65. This California law has a list of chemicals maintained by the state. These chemicals are believed to cause reproductive harm or cancer in humans. Businesses must place warning labels on foods containing these chemicals at levels that exceed the “safe” levels set forth by the law. The Proposition 65 list contains many synthetic and natural chemicals commonly found as ingredients or additives in solvents, dyes, household products, pesticides, drugs, and food. These chemicals may be used in manufacturing or as a byproduct of a chemical process, such as fumes or exhaust. Key findings from the study The study tested 160 products from 70 popular brands for 258 heavy metals and chemicals, focusing on heavy metals and bisphenols. The analysis yielded a total of 35,863 findings. 47% of all tested products exceeded state or federal safety regulations, including Proposition 65. 21% of all products contained more than double the acceptable levels of lead as defined by Proposition 65. Organic protein powders: 79% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. 41% contained over twice the acceptable levels of lead. Plant-based protein powders: 77% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. Whey protein powders: 28% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. Collagen protein powders: 26% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. Chocolate protein powders: 65% exceeded Proposition 65 levels for lead. 29% contained over twice the acceptable levels of lead. These findings highlight significant safety concerns regarding heavy metal contamination in protein powders, particularly in organic, plant-based, and chocolate varieties. What should you look for in a protein powder? The analysis revealed that plant-based protein powders had the highest levels of contaminants, while whey-based protein powders showed the lowest levels. If you’re looking for a safer option, choosing a product with minimal contaminants is key. For added peace of mind, consider buying from Clean Label Project Certified companies. Some trusted brands include: Genetic Nutrition Gorilla Formula 23 Nutrabox Oziva Puori Ritual Wellbeing Nutrition Wicked Protein You can also visit the Clean Label Project website to learn about more certified products and make informed health choices. Editor’s note: I highly recommend LuvByNature Grazing Goat Whey Protein – which comes from goats that graze – 365 days per year – on pesticide and chemical free pastures. No hormones, antibiotics or pesticides are used – ever. This product is non-GMO and gluten free.

Dena Schmidt via NaturalHealth365 – WARNING: Out of 375,000 study participants on antidepressants, one-third died prematurely Antidepressants are supposed to help regulate mood and improve quality of life. However, a study led by scientists from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, has found that for some people, antidepressants raise the risk of premature death. Additionally, a new study published in BMJ Mental Health found that using antidepressants on their own can increase the risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular issues. This suggests that antidepressants might play a role in linking mental health problems, like depression, to a higher risk of heart-related conditions. The most common antidepressant drug class is serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which function by blocking the reuptake of serotonin, one of the major feel-good chemicals in the brain. Serotonin has been called the “happiness” neurotransmitter, and people who aren’t producing enough of it are more prone to depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. WARNING: Out of 375,000 study participants on antidepressants, one-third died prematurely In theory, antidepressants such as SSRIs keep serotonin in the brain longer for those suffering from depression. However, Canadian researchers found that these antidepressants disrupt the regulation of multiple processes in the brain, including the ideal functioning of serotonin. The team conducted a meta-analysis of existing research from 16 medical studies and databases. They wanted to see if they could discern a link between antidepressant use and mortality. In all, 375,000 participants were studied. The researchers looked at the risk of several conditions in relation to antidepressants, including cardiovascular disease. They used a mixed-effects model to control for preexisting conditions and severity of depression for more accurate results. Different antidepressant types were studied, including SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants. Bottom line: the analysis found that taking antidepressants raised the risk of dying prematurely by 33 percent over those not taking antidepressants. Antidepressant users were also 14 percent more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or other adverse cardiovascular event. Serotonin assists in numerous bodily processes – not just mood Both tricyclic antidepressants and SSRIs resulted in the same increased risk of early death. These types are considered the first generation of antidepressants. Serotonin isn’t just a brain chemical; this neurotransmitter is actually present throughout the body. It helps to regulate cell growth, digestion, reproduction, the immune system, and many other processes. To be perfectly clear, this valuable substance is present in just about every organ of the body. While keeping more serotonin in the brains of depressed people seems like a good idea, these drugs are clearly affecting brain and body chemistry in unanticipated ways. Even those who prescribe the drugs are not sure what their long-term effects might be. Manipulating serotonin functioning can lead to a range of different unforeseen effects – which in turn seem to be leading to early death for one-third of all antidepressant users. Natural antidepressants can boost serotonin without harmful side effects No doubt, synthetic antidepressant usage has soared in recent years. In the U.S., around one in 10 people are on SSRIs or other antidepressants. Even more shocking, an estimated one in 4 women between the ages of 40 and 60 take antidepressants. While severe clinical depression requires medical intervention, Americans need to stop relying on the ‘pill for every ill’ treatment approach and tap into the many natural solutions available. Americans need to stop relying on the ‘pill for every ill’ A healthy diet rich in organic (antioxidant-rich) vegetables and fruit and regular physical exercise can significantly reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Of course, many other things would also prove helpful, such as improving personal relationships, consuming a healthy amount of non-toxic fats like organic avocados and coconut oil, and taking adequate B vitamins. Simply put, there is so much that can be done to improve your emotional well-being – without the need for toxic medications. Do your research, work with a qualified holistic healthcare provider, and discover what works best for you.

Patrick Tims via NaturalHealth365 – An alert has been issued cautioning consumers against using a popular potassium chloride pill. The pills were recalled after a potentially fatal flaw was discovered. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to act. This lack of immediate oversight raises serious concerns about the regulatory framework to protect public health. With millions of lives potentially at risk, the issue demands urgent attention. Potentially deadly flaw in commonly used pills all consumers should know about Official records reveal that Glenmark Pharmaceuticals issued over half a dozen recalls for its potassium chloride pills. The pills fail to properly dissolve when contacting moisture, such as saliva and other water, in the human body. This failure to dissolve has the potential to lead to pain, hospitalization, and death. The shocking twist is that the FDA has dragged its feet on investigating the Glenmark Pharmaceuticals drug factory’s flawed operations. To date, there has been no government inspection of the drug factory. The FDA is aware that the pills have the potential to cause deadly potassium spikes, yet it refuses to take meaningful action. The pills were produced at a single factory in India. If our federal government were the watchdog it claims to be, it would have prevented Glenmark Pharmaceuticals from shipping pills produced at the Mumbai factory to the rest of the United States. Why the potassium chloride pills have the potential to kill healthy people There is a widespread misconception that potassium chloride is entirely safe simply because it has been on the market for decades. The drug is frequently prescribed to address issues with muscle and nerve function and is particularly valued for its benefits to heart health. While potassium chloride pills are effective for individuals with low potassium levels, they can pose significant risks under certain conditions. Excessive amounts of the drug can have lethal consequences. High doses of potassium chloride can result in complete heart failure, a risk that cannot be ignored. This danger is so pronounced that potassium chloride is a key component in lethal injections used for executions in several states. This reality highlights just how deadly the drug can be when misused or improperly formulated. Is a recall of the drug enough? The danger of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals’ potassium chloride pills became apparent in May when the Indian drugmaker recalled nearly 47 million capsules. The extended-release medication’s failure to dissolve prompted the FDA to issue its own recall of the defective product. Shockingly, the FDA was already aware of manufacturing issues at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals’ facilities at the time of the recall. Over the previous eight months, the Mumbai-based drugmaker had been responsible for four separate recalls. In the months following, two more recalls were issued, each citing the same critical flaw: the pills’ inability to dissolve properly. While recalls play a crucial role in protecting consumers, they are far from sufficient in addressing systemic issues. The FDA has failed to prevent Glenmark from continuing to distribute potentially dangerous pills to the American market. Even more troubling is the agency’s failure to thoroughly investigate the root cause of the problem. Despite the glaring risks, the FDA has not conducted an on-site inspection of Glenmark’s Mumbai facility since its last review – more than four years ago. This glaring oversight raises serious concerns about the FDA’s capacity to enforce meaningful accountability and ensure the safety of imported drugs. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals: A case study in corporate negligence It seems we have drifted too far toward a laissez-faire economy, where corporate greed often goes unchecked. Within a single year, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals issued seven recalls for medications that failed to dissolve as intended, yet no significant government action has been taken to address the underlying issues. Glenmark’s public relations team has acknowledged three deaths and several hospitalizations linked to their defective products. FDA records corroborate these reports, confirming the dangers of potassium chloride pills. However, the FDA appears reluctant to formally attribute these deaths and hospitalizations to the drug, allowing Glenmark’s pursuit of profit to continue virtually unimpeded. The time has come for a comprehensive overhaul of the FDA. The agency currently lacks the resources and authority to effectively oversee the manufacturing, distribution, and recall of generic medications produced in factories outside the United States. If the FDA were fulfilling its intended role, it would immediately take decisive action against Glenmark.

Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 – Research has shown that people suffering from an autoimmune condition virtually always have low levels of GSH. More than 100 different health problems – including joint and skin pain, blood sugar imbalances, and gut disorders – have an autoimmune component that turns into the immune system attacking the body’s organs, tissues, and cells. A major cause of all this pain and suffering is the ever-increasing barrage of environmental toxins and stressors depleting our bodies’ stores of glutathione. (often referred to as GSH) Important point: Research has shown that people suffering from an autoimmune condition virtually always have low levels of GSH. Conversely, having optimal levels of this “master antioxidant” can help modulate immune system reactions and reduce the risk of problems. Step one: What is the purpose of glutathione (GSH)? Glutathione, the body’s most powerful antioxidant, is a powerful detoxifier that binds to toxins and helps eliminate them. GSH is critical for immune function and for controlling inflammation and oxidative damage. Proper GSH activity modulates cell proliferation and protects mitochondria, the cells’ “powerhouses.” It also helps to promote peak physical functioning while increasing muscle tone and stamina. Don’t forget: the body’s ability to prevent – and recover from – chronic health issues depends on its ability to produce and maintain high levels of this life-sustaining molecule. GSH is synthesized in the body from the amino acids cysteine, glycine, and glutamine. While the body produces lavish amounts in youthful years, glutathione levels tend to decline as a normal part of the aging process. Keep in mind that many factors drain GSH from the body, including pharmaceutical drugs, environmental pollutants, hormonal imbalances, lack of sleep, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, and alcohol use. Reduce the risk of immune system “flare-ups” Glutathione exists in the body in two forms: reduced GSH and oxidized GSH. Reduced glutathione is the form that actively combats free radicals. However, in the process, it gains an extra unpaired electron and becomes unstable, turning into oxidized glutathione. An enzyme known as glutathione reductase triggers the conversion back to its usable form. Many natural health experts maintain that oxidized glutathione must be recycled back into reduced glutathione to manage autoimmune disorders. In fact, studies have shown that promoting glutathione recycling helps regulate the immune system, reduce the autoimmune response, promote tissue recovery, and even heal “leaky gut.” In order to boost healthy glutathione recycling, the first order of business is to reduce the stressors that threaten glutathione levels. Some steps you may need to take include balancing blood sugar levels, addressing food intolerances, reducing your exposure to environmental toxins and pesticides, managing adrenal function, re-balancing the gut microbiome, and adopting an organic diet. Of course, it’s wise to consult with a holistic physician or health coach to help you decide. Selected supplements and natural compounds can enhance the body’s ability to recycle glutathione You can support glutathione recycling with N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), a biologically available form of cysteine that is rapidly turned into intracellular glutathione. Cell studies have shown that pretreatment with NAC raises glutathione levels in older cells while helping to reduce cell death. Alpha-lipoic acid helps to reverse depletion of glutathione that can occur as a result of stress, while the amino acid glutamine – a precursor to glutathione – can boost levels as well. Cordyceps, a medicinal fungus commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, has been shown to protect cells by engaging the GSH enzyme cycle. In addition, studies have shown that an herb known as gotu kola (or Centella asiatica) can increase levels of GSH peroxidase. Finally, milk thistle extract can increase GSH recycling and help improve the ratios of reduced to oxidized GSH. Promote glutathione recycling with natural nutrients Eating moderate amounts of organic Brazil nuts, sardines, cage-free eggs, grass-fed beef, and spinach can raise levels of selenium, an antioxidant trace mineral essential for GSH recycling. Natural health experts also recommend organic, undenatured bio-active whey protein – a great source of cysteine – to enhance GSH production and recycling. Eating plentiful amounts of sulfur-containing foods, such as organic broccoli, garlic, onions, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and kale, can decrease oxidative stress and boost glutathione levels. Foods rich in B-complex vitamins, such as 100% grass-fed beef liver, organic pinto beans, lentils, and garbanzo beans, can aid the methylation process, which is essential to the production and recycling of GSH. Naturally, foods rich in vitamin C – like organic oranges, bell peppers, and strawberries – help convert oxidized GSH to its active form. And vitamin E – found in organic sunflower seeds and spinach – preserves enzymes that protect glutathione. In addition to helping to alleviate autoimmune conditions, GSH can be instrumental in helping to prevent blood sugar issues and neurodegenerative problems. It is difficult to think of a substance that is more vital to human health. Glutathione is simply too important to take for granted, and preserving and protecting it can pay off in major health ways.

Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 – With its spiky purple flowers and dull green leaves, milk thistle may appear to be nothing more than an ordinary weed growing wild in vacant lots and fields. Featuring ridged gray bark and deep green leaves, the slippery elm tree is a common presence in the hardwood forests of North America. But in its inner bark lies a secret. Holistic doctors believe that compounds from this ordinary-looking tree may offer an extraordinary gift – the ability to relieve the digestive complaint known as acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Slippery elm, treasured in indigenous American healing systems as a remedy for digestive upsets, has also attracted the attention of contemporary scientists. In a new report from the National Institutes of Health, researchers gave slippery elm a “thumbs-up” for its absence of adverse effects in clinical studies. To learn how this natural compound can help to safely and effectively quench the “fire inside,” read on. SHOCKING: 40 percent of all Americans experience GERD at least once a week GERD results from a backflow of stomach acids into the esophagus, which causes the classic burning sensation in the throat and upper chest. You may also experience nausea, difficulty swallowing, sour taste, and coughing. Unfortunately, GERD is extremely common. In a review published in 2022 in Nutrients, the authors cited a Cedars-Sinai study showing that an astonishing two out of every five Americans have GERD-like symptoms at least once a week. Western medicine often attempts to treat GERD with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole, which is marketed under the brand name Prilosec. However, PPIs can feature toxic side effects. Long-term use heightens the risk of magnesium deficiencies, bone fractures, shortfalls in vitamin B-12, kidney disease, and intestinal infections. With consequences such as these, it’s no wonder that an increasing number of people with GERD are turning to natural interventions – such as slippery elm – for relief. Formula featuring slippery elm shows significant promise in combating GERD In an Australian clinical trial published in Nutritional Research, 12 weeks of slippery elm combined with curcumin, aloe vera, and other herbs significantly improved the frequency and severity of indigestion, heartburn, nausea, and abdominal pain in GERD patients. The participants also reported improved quality of life, higher energy levels, and better sleep quality. For good measure, the herbal formula improved the health of the gut microbiome by increasing beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus. Amazingly, by the study’s end, almost half the participants taking proton pump inhibitors for heartburn no longer required their medication. A sizable portion of the volunteers (about 33 percent) were even able to reintroduce common GERD “triggers” such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and caffeine into their diets. Although more studies can always be helpful, the researchers agree that slippery elm is a “promising ingredient” for relieving GERD. Why slippery elm is perfectly suited to soothing troubled digestive systems Slippery elm is rich in antioxidant phenolics, resins, and tannins that can help prevent tissue oxidative damage. However, its “secret weapon” against GERD is its high content of mucilage, a type of fiber that forms a gel-like substance in water. Mucilage gives slippery elm natural demulcent qualities (meaning that it can moisturize, hydrate, and protect tissues while relieving inflammation and irritation). In addition, slippery elm stimulates mucus production, which helps coat irritated tissues in the throat and stomach. Many holistic doctors maintain that slippery elm’s soothing and protective powers can help prevent ulcers. While more studies are needed, this natural compound may also hold promise as a natural intervention against a host of digestive disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, “leaky gut,” and Crohn’s disease. Bonus benefit: Smooth and moisturize dry, itchy winter skin Slippery elm, botanically known as Ulmus rubra, is available as a supplement. You can find it in various convenient formulations, including powders, capsules, extracts, tinctures, lozenges, and tea bags. Choose a high-quality product that has been subject to third-party testing and is sold by a reputable vendor. Before trying slippery elm, consult your trusted holistic doctor – who can advise you on the proper amount to take. Slippery elm is also available in ointments and creams for topical use. Some holistic healthcare providers suggest these to address eczema, psoriasis, and rashes – or simply to soothe and pamper run-of-the-mill dry, itchy skin. If you’re tired of “feeling the burn” from acid reflux, maybe it’s time to try slippery elm. This drug-free herbal intervention just might tame the fire. Editor’s note: In case you’re wondering how much slippery elm to take for heartburn relief, typical amounts suggested are as follows: In powdered form mixed with water, tea or juice: 1 tablespoon, up to 3x / day 2 – 4, 380 mg lozenges can help provide relief For tea: 2–3 teaspoons of powder per one-cup serving, 1-2 cups / day And, finally, for capsules: 1,600 mg / day, divided in 2-3 servings / day Other natural heartburn remedies include: lemon water, apple cider vinegar, aloe vera juice, licorice and chamomile tea. Obviously, when in doubt, work with a trusted holistic healthcare provider or health coach to find what remedy works best for you.

Lori Alton via NaturalHealth365 – With its spiky purple flowers and dull green leaves, milk thistle may appear to be nothing more than an ordinary weed growing wild in vacant lots and fields. Turmeric, a kitchen spice from India and Southeast Asia, has long been treasured by natural healers for its ability to fight inflammation, regulate blood sugar, and combat infections. But turmeric benefits extend even beyond these traditional uses. Ongoing research suggests that its active ingredient – a plant pigment known as curcumin – could be a valuable weapon in the fight against cancer. Many studies have supported turmeric’s anticancer effects, including its ability to reduce the number and size of tumors. However, studies also revealed a dramatic and encouraging “twist:” turmeric can potentially target several particularly aggressive and lethal forms of cancer while leaving noncancerous cells unharmed. For instance, recent research has shown that curcumin may help fight colorectal cancer by influencing how cancer cells clean out damaged parts (autophagy) and self-destruct when unhealthy (apoptosis), offering new hope in combating this common and deadly disease. An international team of scientists concludes that curcumin inhibits an enzyme involved in carcinogenesis Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Peking University, and Zhejiang University collaborated on a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The researchers used multiple models to show that turmeric can powerfully inhibit a specific enzyme called DYRK2 (or dual-specificity tyrosine-regulated kinase 2). The team used cutting-edge X-ray crystallography to obtain 3D images – in which curcumin could be seen binding to the enzyme at the atomic level. This is significant because binding to and inhibiting DYRK2 impairs the activity of proteasomes – protein complexes involved in cancer development. The team noted that inhibiting proteasome activity in cancer cells interfered with proliferation, reducing tumors, slower cancer growth, and an overall lessening of the cancer burden. Curcumin targets the “Achilles heel” of lethal cancers Some cancers – including triple-negative breast cancer and multiple myeloma – are classified by scientists as “proteasome-addicted,” meaning they are dependent on proteasome complexes. Impairing the activity of the proteasome inhibits tumor development, leading scientists to theorize that this dependency may well be the “Achilles’ heel” of these aggressive, hard-to-treat cancers. Pharmaceutical proteasome inhibitors have already been developed and approved, but there is a catch: these medications damage noncancerous cells. In response, resourceful researchers have been focusing on inhibiting proteasome activity by identifying and manipulating proteasome regulators. This is where the power of turmeric comes into play. By depleting DYRK2, curcumin suppresses proteasome activity – with very little damage to healthy cells in the area. Curcumin strengthens the cancer-fighting effects of pharmaceutical proteasome inhibitors – meaning that smaller dosages – and fewer side effects – may be possible. When used with carfilzomib – an FDA-approved proteasome inhibitor used to treat multiple myeloma – curcumin increased apoptosis (cancer cell death) – while causing minimal harm to healthy cells. Curcumin uses multiple pathways to target cancer If curcumin’s only cancer-fighting abilities were impairing the DYRK2 enzyme and inhibiting proteasome activity, it would still be a promising area for study in cancer prevention and treatment. However, curcumin has an impressive variety of cancer-fighting pathways. Curcumin helps inhibit angiogenesis, the growth and development of new blood vessels to nourish and support tumors. It also “switches off” genes that promote tumor development while helping the immune system identify and destroy malignant cells. In addition, curcumin can help to protect your DNA from potentially cancer-causing mutations caused by radiation and environmental toxins. It also suppresses the production of MMPs or matrix metalloproteinases. These enzymes attack the extracellular matrix and facilitate the invasion of cancer cells. Finally, by reducing the production of adhesion molecules that cling to cell walls, curcumin stops cancer cells from settling in place – effectively “throwing a monkey wrench” into the ability of cancer cells to metastasize. Additional research supports curcumin’s effectiveness. In one study, curcumin supplementation caused a 36 percent reduction in the size of lung tumors. In another, it caused a 40 percent decrease in the development of colon tumors. And – in one particularly promising clinical study – curcumin cut the growth rate of prostate-specific androgen (a marker of tumor progression) in half. How can I take curcumin? Study co-author Sourav Banerjee, Ph.D., a postdoctoral scholar at UCSD School of Medicine, remarked on curcumin’s “chemical drawbacks,” noting that orally administered curcumin is broken down and eliminated by the human body very quickly. Dr. Banerjee says, “It (curcumin) needs to be modified to enter the bloodstream and stay in the body long enough to target the cancer.” This is why experts say that adding turmeric to food may not provide enough bioavailable curcumin to obtain therapeutic results. The best option currently is to seek a high-quality, high-potency organic curcumin extract standardized to contain at least 95 percent curcuminoids. Note: Do not attempt to treat cancer or any other serious medical condition with turmeric or curcumin without the guidance of a qualified doctor. Before supplementing with curcumin, get the go-ahead from your trusted holistic healthcare provider. Simply put, as scientists continue to discover curcumin’s multiple effects against cancer, this amazing flavonoid seems destined to play a major role in natural cancer therapies and cancer prevention.
